Fl EDWOOD retailers who cashed I I in on the added interest in redwood decks created by last year's problem solving deck contest have a chance for a repeat performance.

Some 1000 dealers displayed counter cards with tearaway entry blanks for the California Redwood Association / Popular Science competition. They also packed contest entry information into redwood garden grade deliveries to deck sites. As a promotion incentiye in the nationwide contest, CRA offered a $1,000 retailer bonus to the dealer selling the redwood for the winning deck.

Point of purchase materials, newspaper and trade publication publicity spread word of the contest. CRA received 150 entries from all over including Arkansas, Tennessee. Texas. Oklahoma and numerous western states.

In addition to the $ 1,000 first prize, two $500 second place and two $300 third place awards were made.

A multi-page color story of the five winning decks will appear in the April Popular Science. Dealers are being encouraged to check out these innovative examples of how outdoor living areas can be expanded and existing site problems solved with decks. They should be useful in their spring deck planning and building promotions. Teamed with deck building clinics and CRA how to and idea booklets, retailers can use the deck contest results to establish themselves as redwood deck experts in their region.
