Information and tips on how to avoid fires are all too often thought of after the fire. Why not check out your operation against the following, furnished by ille Industrial Indemnity Insurance Co. in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association.
According to the NFPA, the major causes of lumber yard fires are:
(1) Electrical.
(2) Heating Equipment.
(3) Smoking and Matches.
(4) Children and Matches.
The following rules are suggested to help you control your hazards.
( I ) Post "No Smoking" signs in mill and yard area where fires could easily start. Designate smoking areas and enforce these areas.
(2) Good housekeeping is as important in fire prevention as is good discipline. Material should not be allowed to accumulate and a good cleanup program is necessary each day, especially in the mill area.
(3) the exhaust systems should be periodically cleaned to insure good, efticient operation. Removal of sawdust and chips promptly should help to reduce the fire potential.
(4) Aisles should be kept clear for easy rnovement of equipment. Adequate aisles would be 20 feet if possible. If smaller aisles are necessary, good enforcement of housekeeping should be of prime importance.
(5) Fire fighting equipmentshould be checked periodically to see that it is available for immediate use.

Refueling of yard equipment should be done in an open area, motor shut off, aPProved fire extinguishers available, and an approved nozzle or safety can for the filling operation.

Heating equipment should be checked for defects. Combustibles should not be stored too close to the heating unit.
If electrical space heaters are used in the office areas for the clerical personnel, check the electrical wiring and pull the plug each night.
Electrical applianees such as coffee pots, hot plates, etc., should be on asbestos plate or pad. Electricity should be turned off at night.
( 10 ) Perimeter fences should be checked to see that dry weeds, brush, and blown trash are kept away.
(ll) Storage buildings raised above the ground should have the lower part screened or boarded to keep trash from accumulating under the building.
(12 ) Know the fire department telephone number in your area. Turn in the alarm immediately. Don't wait until the fire is out of control before calling the fire department.
It is a wise manager who knows that even a small fire can interfere with his operations. Valuable equipment can be put out of commission, as well as loss of materials. Review your operation and take action today. Tomorrow mdy be too
