Hardboard vs. Noise Pollution
Pollution is a much bandied word today. While air and water get much publicity as a widespread menace, noise pollution is more directly evi dent to the individual because so much of it is experienced within his own living quarters.
Proper construction techniques can make walls effective barriers against noise instead of carriers of noise. Soundproof walls depend essentially on the principle of construction that allows each side of the wall to vibrate without transrnitting sounds to the other side. The demand today is for thin, lightweight, guickly-assembled, "dry" construetion.
Such construction is available today in various partition systems in which prefinished hardboard paneling is the exterior component.
The real breakthrough for prefinished hardboard panelings as a noise control component was documented in recerlt tests on a dozen partitions composed of normally-used back-up materials. Ratings all above 50 STC, indicate hardboard as a satisfactory decorative as well as sound condition. ing wall facing.
The toengineered" wood processing of hardboards gives the material high density that improves a partition's acoustical performance. High density in material of a given thickness means greater mass which is an important element in sound control partition design.
