pACK at the beginning of the year, when most U everyone was trying to adjust to the New Year and snow covered much of our eleven western states, the first mailings and promotions had begun to s t a r t May National Home Improvement M o n t h. It was none too soon to start.

The promotion for this annual efrort to sell the public on fixing up their homes grows larger every year, the program more extensive and effective. It reflects the home modernization market itself which last year did $I3.5 billion and expects to push towards $15 billion this year. Do-it-yourselfers alone are expected to spend an estimated $4 billion this year for home fix-up.

Study the Home Improvement Time materials that have been sent. The varieties of action open to you are extensive. You can limit your efforts to hanging a few banners in the .ho*.oo- o. you can really jump in and set up a Headquarters City Program in your area. But whatever you do, do something. The market is there, don,t .i,vait until it is too late to take part in this year's ob- servation. If you didn't get the materials we refer to for some reason, just let us know and we will make sure you do.

This year there will again be extensive promotion in the national shelter magazines. They talk directly and very effectivel.| t]o the woman shopper who controls so much of tlle discretionary income today. Such publication giants as House Beautilul, Popular Science, Better Homes and, Cardens will give in-depth coverage in their May issues. These and other national, regional, consumer and trade magazines will generate widespread enthusiasm for home improvement in virtually every segment of the population.

The natural focus of all this interest falls on the retail lumber and building materials dealer, the man who is fast becoming the source for anything connected with the home.

Less than two months away, May Home Im. provement Month can be Wallet Improvement Month for those of you at all levels of the lumber and building materials industry that have the initiative and foresight to really take part. Measure -the width of your wallet then see which part of the wide ranging program would do the job of widening it best for you and your company.
