He attended the University of Alabama and served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army signal corps in the Philippines during WWII.

He started his career with WalkerWilliams Lumber Co. in 1950, rising to ceo before retiring after 3'7 years in t987.

He was a member of the American Wood-Preservers' Association, serving as president in 1984-1985 and receiving the Award of Merit in 1994.
