The Burden Of Roof

In reference to the article entitled "Selling the Right Roof," (June, p. 9), I would like to comment on a misleading statement.

The article, alluding to the fire resistance of wood shingles states "...However, Class A fire ratings are available for certain wood shingle products that incorporate a factory-applied. fire-resistant treatment."

This statement is false in that no wooden shingle can carry an "A" fire-rating in and of itself. The highest rating available for wood shingles and shakes is a "B" rating. An "A" rating for the entire roof "system" can only be obtained by utilizing "B" rated shakes or shingles in conjunction with some type of fire-rated sheathingnot just by the use of "A" rated shakes or shingles as these are not available.
