The Quality Leader in Treated Wood Producfs

Floods, Tornadoes Swamp Southeast

Most retailers suffered relatively minor damages following a series of early March storms that killed dozens and forced thousands to flee from their homes and businesses.

The storms, which began March l, caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.

In Falmouth, Ky., Falmouth Lumber lost $25,000 to $50,000 in inventory when 5 feet of water and 4-6 inches of mud flooded three buildings. "It's hard to tell how bad it is going to be until the materials start to dry out," said owner Larry Ritter.

Ritter reflects on the last time Falmouth was flooded: "ln 1964, we only got I foot of water in this building, and we thought that could never happen again. This time it hit areas it didn't get in 1964;'

He adds, "In 1964, the water just came in. This time the water had such force it took houses off their foundations. I don't think this part of town will ever come back."

At Frankfort Lumber, Frankfort, Ky., 5-6 ft. of water was left in the yard, with nearly 30 inches in most buildings. Despite the flooding, minor damage was sustained. "We had moved most materials," said asst. mgr. Bill Courtney.

At Calvert City Lumber, Calvert City, Ky., 26 employees kept their eyes on the rising river, hoping it would crest before it filled their yard with additional water.

Fortunately, the river did crest March 15, leaving only 46 inches of water in the back warehouse. Initial flooding estimates were l-l-ll2 ft. in that area.

"We're just glad to see the water go down," said mgr. Roger Lutz. "We were lucky since there were people who lost their homes in a 2O-mile radius of us."
