Circ'leNo. l23onP.tl6 easily select and use I-joiss from various manufachreis with one set of load/ span tables, installation instructions and standard engine€ring values.
"The standard was developed for one reason," explains APA's Tom 1l/illirmssn, "to simplify the use and specification of wood l-joists and, in return, make them a morr economical fl oor joist alternative."
I-joist depths, load/span tables, installation details and hole charts will be universal and sandard anong APA EWS menber manufacturers.
The standard was developed after more than 9O% of homebuilders srnveyed by APA called for a performance standard that makes l-joists easier to use and drives the unnecessary costs out of tbe system.
As glued engineered wood products, APA ES'S l-joists reportedly will offer great€r dimensional stability, higher strength, increased stnrctural reliability and a lower tendency to check or split like solid sawn lumber. In addition, a rigorous quality assurance prcgam will ensure l-joist product performance.
Span ratings will be stamped on the product 6akiag it easier for builders and remodelen to install them properly and more visible for code officials to inspect. By standardizing flange widths within a grade designation, fewer auxiliary pieces are required because standard size hangers will be used.
Current APA EWS l-joist program producers include Willamene Industries, Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Standard Strucures.

Wood Industry Protests Use Ol Term "Plastic Lumbe/'

Several indusEy groups arc working to persuadc ASTM Committee D20 on Plastics againsl using tbe term "plastic lumbef' to desimarc stnrctural products that use a combination of plastic and wood fiber.
American Wood Council, among others, submitted negative votes and cornments claimiag the rcrminology will cause confusion and porcntially dangerous situations in the marketplace.
All definitions of the word "lumber," noted American Wood Council, describe cut slices of tim6g1 or wood in board shapes, thus identifying a manufacnrring process, finished shape and material. The proposed definition of "plastic lumbef is contradictory as to material and incorrect regarding manufacturing process, fi nished shape and cross-section.
Alternative terms suggested included "fiber-reinforced plastic boards," "resin-bound fiber stnrctural boards," and "structural fiber-reinforced plastic board."
