2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

The Bloomsburg University baseball team finished its 2013 season with a 21-27 overall record, but ended the year on a tear by winning 17 of its final 21 games. Included in that stretch were doubleheader sweeps of Shippensburg, an NCAA Division II World Series entrant, and East Stroudsburg, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion. The Huskies hope to carry over last year’s late-season success with a hot start to the 2014 campaign which begins Feb. 20-23 at the Newport News Shipbuilder Tournament in Newport News, Va. “Last year really set the stage for this year,” Bloomsburg head coach Mike Collins said. “We started some freshmen in critical roles in our lineup and they really grew up as the season went on. The expectation is that those guys now are more ready to handle the challenges of the season.” Much of this spring’s excitement centers around all of the returners from last year. Eight of last season’s top nine batting averages on the team return with starters back around the diamond. While last year’s middle of the lineup relied heavily on freshmen, those same players are now seasoned veterans.

this season,” Collins added. “We were pleased at how we finished last year but we need to get off on a better start. We need to get out of the gates racing this year.” STARTING PITCHING Depth won’t be an issue for the Huskies as they have a number of options on the mound this spring. The issue will be finding the right roles for each pitcher – something that will be determined through the early season trips South as players battle for spots. “We have a lot of talent on the mound, but we need the guys to grab a hold of roles,” Collins said of his pitching staff. “We have a lot of guys who we expect a lot from, it will just be who will emerge to take their roles. “Some of the upperclassmen have pitched a lot for us so there is more of an idea of what we will get from them. But some of the sophomores and juniors will be sorting a lot of things in the early season trips. Overall we have tremendous depth on the mound.” A pair of seniors lead the starting rotation into the new season – Casey Cooperman and Kyle Hunter.

Pitching-wise the Huskies also return all but two of its contributors from a season ago.

Cooperman led the Huskies in 2013 in ERA (2.36), starts (10) and innings pitched (53.1) and tied for the team lead with three complete games. Cooperman, who will likely be relied on as a Friday starter this season, throws three pitches for strikes, using a two-seam fastball that runs in on right-handers, a plus slider as well as a changeup while adding a cutter to his repertoire.

“Our hope is the confidence that was created late in the year will remain and we can feed off that at the outset of

Hunter was the PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2011 after posting a 4-1 record with a 3.10 ERA in 52.1 innings.

“Offensively we have a lot of things to be excited about,” Collins said. “We could put out a lineup that will be difficult to deal with.”

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK He’ll look to rebound after battling injuries the past two years and is expected to be a featured starter in the conference rotation. The rest of the rotation is up for grabs with junior Tyler Hill, who posted a 1-1 record with a 3.43 ERA in 14 relief appearances, a candidate to move into a starting role. Collins has also been impressed with the improvement of sophomore Matt Jaskolka, a hard-throwing right-hander with an excellent breaking ball and improving changeup. Senior Eric Geedey made 10 appearances and eight starts a year ago and could again work into the rotation. Freshman Bryce Mengel impressed in the fall and also could play a role. BULLPEN Junior right-hander Jared Schaffer worked 31.2 innings last year, serving as both a starter and middle reliever. Sophomore Alex Carpenter made his Huskies debut with a 2.70 ERA in three appearances last year and could also see starting opportunities. Junior right-hander Cody Heane turned in a strong fall season and newcomer Ryuta Amaike also had an excellent fall. Amaike, who redshirted last season, could close games for the Huskies this year. Senior Nick Donofry was strong during fall ball while sophomore Sean McCloskey also made nine appearances last year and will look for time on the hill. Also figuring into the mix are sophomores Matt Hurd and Jack Fritz. With 14 non-conference games scheduled before the Huskies return home to open PSAC East play on March 22, many could have opportunities to start or further solidify their roles in the ‘pen. Pitching depth could pay off as the season wears on. “Now in the PSAC we play some mid-week conference doubleheaders and that’s not something we shy away from,” Collins said. “We have fantastic confidence in all of our guys and feel like we’re really deep in quality pitching. That’s something we’ve tried to build over the years in our recruiting. We wanted to be deep on the mound.” CATCHERS The combination of Corey Baiada and Tim Kurucz figures to give the Huskies one of the best tandems behind the plate in the PSAC. Add in promising freshman Damin Muth and Collins feels secure about his options hanging signs this season for the Bloomsburg pitching staff. “As a group I feel like we have the best catchers in the

PSAC. All three are very sound across the board in terms of offense and defense,” Collins described. “We led the conference last year in double plays and I think our catchers were a part of that. Our catchers do a very good job of controlling the running game and keeping the double play in order. They don’t give up many passed balls or allow wild pitches.” Baiada proved to be a middle-of-the-order type of bat in his freshman season, finishing the year with a .291 batting average and 26 RBIs with what Collins describes as “explosive power” and the ability to take the next step this spring. Kurucz may possess the best arm of the group and brings experience calling the games as well as handling the pitching staff entering his senior season. His ability behind the plate also is key to shutting down the opposition’s running game. Muth played well in the fall and Collins is excited about his receiving and blocking skills as well as his ability to handle games as a freshman. INFIELD Though the faces primarily remain the same, the Huskies will have different roles for some of their returning infielders this season. PSAC East Freshman of the Year Brian Almand moves from third to short and will have a double play partner of redshirt junior Tim Ravel, who moves from short to second. “Brian feels so much more comfortable at short and Tim played a lot of second base in the summer,” Collins said. “It has been a great dynamic. We’re confident in how those guys will work together.” Almand was extremely impressive in his Huskies debut last spring, leading the team with a .357 batting average while also knocking in 39 runs and compiling a .407 on-base percentage. An emotional leader of the team, Ravel finished last year batting .282 with 14 stolen bases and 14 RBIs after making the PSAC East second team in 2012 while hitting over .300. Sophomore Joey Casselberry did not make a single error last season at first base and Collins calls him perhaps the best defensive first baseman he has had. After hitting .345 with a .409 on-base percentage and 22 RBIs last year, Casselberry will be counted on in the middle of the lineup. Newcomer Eric Frain could take over at the hot corner. A 2014 Huskies Baseball

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK leadoff man for the NJCAA Division III national champion Gloucester County Community College team last year, the junior transfer brings strong on-base skills and base-stealing abilities. Sophomore James Ott hit .387 in 16 games last year and will likely serve as the designated hitter and can also play both first and third and was one of the Huskies’ most productive offensive players in the fall season. Senior Aaron Russell could see time at both positions and is also an excellent defender and bunter. OUTFIELD Senior centerfielder Brad Smith returns as a fourthyear starter and is a dynamic defensive presence for the Huskies. Smith runs well in centerfield and possesses gap power at the plate. Smith hit .295 with 19 RBI, eight doubles and two triples last year. Another senior, Nick Mazza enters the season as the starter in right field after a strong finish to last season. A difficult position to play at Danny Litwhiler field due to the hill and wind conditions, Mazza handles the spot well. A left-handed bat, he also hits lefties well and finished last season with a .333 average at the plate in 38 games. Junior A.J. Stump is the favorite to man left field after batting .329 with 11 doubles and 24 RBI a season ago and also brings strong defensive skills. Junior Pete Edgar will serve in a utility role with an ability to play around the diamond and newcomer Brady West will also fight for playing time. SEASON OUTLOOK The Huskies were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East preseason coaches’ poll and Collins expects the division to be tough from top to bottom. “There’s so much parity in our league, especially in the Eastern Division,” he said. “I think we will be right there in the mix, but it is extremely difficult to handicap the PSAC East. Every year there are surprises. With an experienced roster, the hope is that last year’s early season struggles are a thing of the past. “It took us awhile to learn how to finish games,” Collins

8

2014 Huskies Baseball

said. “Even during that losing streak there were periods where we were playing well. We had a hard time finishing games. That was a question of maturity. Once we got over the hump the confidence in late innings started to appear. “It will be an exciting year and I’m confident we will be in the PSAC Playoffs and play our best baseball at the right time.”

COACHING STAFF

Mike Collins

Head Coach • 9th Season at Bloomsburg Career Record: 153-213 (.418) Eight Years Record at BU: Same

Mike Collins is in his ninth season as the Huskies head baseball coach in 2013. In his first seven years, Collins has led the Huskies to 153 wins. Over that span, the Huskies have had 27 All-PSAC East selections and four All-Region selections. Bloomsburg has narrowly missed reaching the PSAC playoffs in five of those seasons, and in 2011, the Huskies earned their first tournament berth since 1997. The 2013 squad started slowly before winning 17 of its last 21 contests, including a nine-game winning streak that matched the second longest in school history. The strong finish gave Bloomsburg at least 20 wins for the third consecutive year. Freshman Brian Almand was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year and earned a place on the all-conference second team. The team scored 30 runs on the final day of the season to break a 52-year-old record for runs in a game. In 2012, the Huskies missed the PSAC playoffs by a half-game, edged out of the four spot by Millersville. However, Bloomsburg’s 25 wins was the most since 1999 and their 12-12 mark in the PSAC East snapped a 14 year streak of below .500 conference records. Bloomsburg posted a 25-20 record, their second straight winning season and Collins led the Huskies to a number six regional ranking on April 25. Collins also coached six Huskies to All-PSAC East honors, including two first team selections in seniors Vince Smarrelli and Vinny Voorhees. His 13 total All-PSAC selections during 2011 and 2012 were more than any other school in the division. He also placed two players on All-Region teams for the second consecutive season in 2012. Bloomsburg finished third in the Eastern Division in 2011 with a record of 11-13, earning its first postseason appearance in 13 years. The Huskies trailed the league for much of the season but were powered a late-season run, including wins in six of the final eight division games. Bloomsburg went 2-2 in the PSAC tournament, earning the program’s first postseason wins since 10

2014 Huskies Baseball

advancing to the D-II National Championship round in 1995. Among the team’s wins in 2011 were victories over nationallyranked Millersville and regionally-ranked East Stroudsburg, Kutztown and Mansfield. Collins also led Kyle Hunter to PSAC East Freshman of the Year honors, marking the team’s first major award winner in Collins’ tenure. Collins also oversaw the renovation of Danny Litwhiler Field that included new dugouts, brick backstop, new elevated seating behind home plate and installation of a warning track as well as walkways. In addition, Collins directs the Huskies baseball camp programs. The Huskies offer three weeks of summer camp as well as seven clinics throughout the academic year. Collins came to Bloomsburg after spending four seasons as the top assistant at the Binghamton University. Collins was instrumental in the recruiting process for Binghamton, and played a prominent role in the success of the Bearcats program, helping the team to a berth in the America East playoffs in just their fourth season of Division One competition. He also held a successful Crack of the Bat summer and winter camps for youngsters in the Greater Binghamton area. Collins previously served as head coach at Keystone College, compiling a 90-75 overall mark for the junior college in La Plume, Pa. His 2001 team won a school-record 18 consecutive games en route to a 28-12 record and runner-up finish in Region 19. In 2000 and 2001, Collins-coached teams earned pre-season national rankings, and he produced 11 all-region and two All-America players during his tenure at Keystone. Collins played Division I baseball at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in politics in 1996. He was a two-time team captain and four-year letterwinner. He resides in Riverside, Pa. with his wife Angie, his sons Graham and Landon, and his dogs Duke and Finnegan.

COACHING STAFF

Kevin Leitzel

Assistant Coach 3rd Season at Bloomsburg

Kevin Leitzel is in his third year as an assistant coach with the Huskies. In 2012 he helped guide the Huskies to 25 wins, the most by the program since 1999 and just the fourth time they reached that mark in the program’s history. He has coached seven All-PSAC players including the 2013 Freshman of the Year. Leitzel coaches the outfielders and assists Coach Collins with the Huskies’ offense. The Huskies have had a .300 team batting average in each of his two years and the outfielders have improved upon their fielding percentage and outfield assists. In addition to his coaching duties, Leitzel directs the Huskies’ baseball camp programs. The Huskies offer a one-week summer camp as well as five clinics throughout the academic year. Leitzel joined the Huskies coaching staff after working for All-Star Baseball Academy in West Chester and serving one year as the varsity assistant at Line Mountain High School. Leitzel played collegiately at Garrett College before transferring and finishing his playing career at Immaculata University.

Nick Eversole Student Assistant Coach 1st Season at Bloomsburg

Nick Eversole will be joining the Bloomsburg coaching staff for the 2014 season after finishing his playing career in 2013 as a catcher for the Huskies.

Eversole was a three-year starter behind the plate and at first base. An all-conference selection as a sophomore, he hit .287 with two home runs. After another year at the .287 mark and primarily playing first base, Eversole moved back to catcher for his senior year. He led the Huskies in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, doubles and hit .337. He finished his career with a .299 batting average, seven home runs and threw out 25 percent of base stealers. As a member of the coaching staff, Eversole will assist with the catchers, hitters as well as on and off-campus recruiting. 2014 Huskies Baseball

COACHING STAFF

Josh Epstein

Graduate Assistant Coach 1st Season at Bloomsburg

Josh Epstein enters his first season as a graduate assistant at Bloomsburg University where he will service as the Huskies pitching coach. Prior to joining the Bloomsburg coaching staff, Epstein served as the pitching coach for Ramapo College of New Jersey for three seasons. Along with pitching responsibilities, Epstein coordinated Ramapo’s recruiting efforts for four seasons. In total he spent six full years on the Ramapo coaching staff. During his tenure at Ramapo, Epstein oversaw a pitching staff that set numerous school records and led the Roadrunners to compete on a national level. The team won 95 games in three seasons (95-45-1 overall record), made the New Jersey Athletic Tournament three times and competed in three NCAA Regional Tournaments. The work Epstein put in on the recruiting trail showed up not only in team accomplishments, but in individual recognition as well. Overall 15 Roadrunners earned spots on All NJAC teams, 22 earned spots on All NJCBA teams including the 2012 and 2013 Players of the Year; four players earned spots on the ABCA All Region Team, and one player earned Division 3 AllAmerican Honors. Along with those awards, PJ Cerreto became the first Ramapo College Roadrunner to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft since 2004, and the first RCNJ pitcher to be drafted since 1982. Epstein spent the summer of 2013 coaching the pitchers of Sag Harbor Whalers in the Hampton’s Collegiate Baseball League. The Whalers won the league’s regular season championship, led the league in ERA, and were led by Jonathan Mulford (Pitcher of the Year) and Jacob Bodner (set the league record in saves). In previous summers he worked with the Bayside Yankees organization, coaching with teams throughout their club. Prior to his coaching career, Epstein played one season professionally with the Petach Tikva Pioneers of the Israel Baseball League. He spent his collegiate career playing for Ramapo College, where he was the team’s captain as a senior as well as the school’s SAAC President. Epstein is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and now resides in Bloomsburg.
