Celebrity Artist Series Presents

2015-2016 Season

Blues Guitarist, Vocalist, Songwriter

Ana Popovic The hottest female blues guitarist touring today, Ana Popovic performs her own fiery brand of blues, R&B, funk and rock-n-roll. Fresh off her renowned worldwide tour “Can You Stand the Heat” Popovic, nicknamed the Serbian Scorcher, with her growl of a voice and seriously kicking band Mo’ Betta Love, shreds on her Strat with each performance. Modern, European, multi-talented and the only woman to participate in the acclaimed all-star Jimi Hendrix Tour, she is proof that you don’t need to be southern or male to create authentic blues. “Blueswoman Ana Popovic is a badass. In the maledominated world of blues, the Serbian born and raised Popovic continues to prove her mettle and might with killer guitar chops and well-crafted songwriting.” — Fender.com

Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello

Matt Haimovitz

Grammy-winning Matt Haimovitz will properly christen the newly renovated Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium when he visits Bloomsburg University to perform one of the most profoundly expressive and carefully composed classical pieces ever written, the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johan Sebastian Bach. Following his debut in 1984 at age 13 as soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic, Haimovitz made his first recording at 17 with James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for Deutsche Grammophon. He has performed with the world’s most esteemed symphony orchestras and conductors including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin.

The solo cello recital is a Haimovitz trademark, both inside and outside the concert hall; he recorded the suites in 2000 under his own label Oxingale Records. Dating from as far back as 1720, the six suites are incredibly challenging pieces that rank among the masterpieces of the literature of music. This exquisite performance in K.S. Gross Auditorium will be preceded by a “Movable Feast” as Mr. Haimovitz performs at several locations in downtown Bloomsburg Saturday, October 10. Watch your newspapers or check with the Performing Arts Box Office for details.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suites for solo cello represent so extraordinary a compositional tour de force on so many levels that, were it not for the undeniable fact that they exist, one might think it impossible that pieces of such supernal artistic quality could have been composted at all in this genre. — Benjamin Folkman

“Explosive and thrilling! Ragtime is nothing short of a masterpiece.” — Bloomberg News

AT THE DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY, everything is changing…and anything is possible. RAGTIME returns to the road in all-new national touring production directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge and produced by the team that most recently brought you Spamalot and The Color Purple. At the turn of the 20th century, ragtime was the new music that provided the soundtrack for an America in transition. The stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician unfold — set in turn-of-the-century New York — all three united by their desire and belief in a brighter tomorrow. Their compelling stories are set to theatre’s richest and most glorious Tony Award®-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Winning Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Musical Score, this 13 time Tony Award nominated musical is a timeless celebration of life — what it could and should be!

Finalists

From the same folks who brought us last year’s sensational hit FORTE comes Sons of Serendip. Four very educated guys with a lot of musical talent among them came together to try out for Season 9 of America’s Got Talent, NBC’s top-rated summer series, and wound up in the finals vying for the win. That’s serendipity and hence their name. Life after AGT, much like for Season 8 finalists FORTE, means vocalist Micah Christian, cellist Kendall Ramseur, harpist Mason Morton and pianist Cordaro Rodriguez can keep on performing beautiful music. And they are celebrating the January 2015 debut Finalists from America’s Got Talent of their self-titled album, a carefully curated selection Sons of Serendip of popular covers performed in a wistful, classical Saturday, Nov. 21, 8 p.m. style. Their holiday album O Holy Night will be out this Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall fall; selections from both releases will be part of this seasonal performance.

Parsons Dance Compa

Collaborating with some of the industries best choreographers and musicians, Parsons’ presentation of classical music’s greatest hits brings dancers and singers together when two companies, Parsons Dance and East Village Opera Company join forces to perform unique combinations of up-lifting, family-friendly contemporary dance with hard-hitting arrangements, including selections from their rock-dance opera Remember Me. Appearing as part of the 2007-2008 Celebrity Artist Series, EVOC presents covers of operatic classics performed with a distinctively rock-n-roll sound. ”With modern recording technology and a wide variety of musical styles at our disposal, our goal has been to approach these songs the way we feel the composers would were they alive today,” says co- founder and lead vocalist Tyley Ross. The evening will feature other Parsons pieces, including his masterpiece Caught, which features more than 100 leaps in six minutes by a solo dancer. With the aid of theatrical lighting, the dancer is repeatedly trapped in mid-motion creating the illusion of flight.
