A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Celebrate our Tradition— Build our Future Capital Campaign

Talia Ryan ’14 ABOUT THE PAINTING

Talia Ryan ’14 created the cover art in Acrylic Painting class during her sophomore year. The assignment was called “Heartworks” and the first thing that came to her mind was an image of gears and pipes working together. The result is her industrial vision of a working heart. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Talia is currently a senior at Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, and has taken art classes all four years. She is appreciative of the doors that her Sacred Heart education have opened for her as a young artist, including the Glen Park Arts Festival, in which high school students are given the opportunity to showcase their works publically. Talia plans to pursue art in college, and hopes to be an art teacher one day, so she can pass on what she has learned to others.

IT IS NOISY. Some days it is muddy, while other days it is dusty. There are occasional traffic backups. We have even lost a number of trees. However, we could not be more pleased. Construction has begun! We have officially broken ground and are on our way with the construction of Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Gymnasium and Convocation Center. The facility is being constructed by Picone Construction, working closely with our architects, Stieglitz Snyder Architecture. Fittingly, on October 4, 2013, the Feast of St. Francis, we celebrated a school-wide Outdoor Mass and Ground Blessing. God’s presence was felt by all in attendance as the slight autumn wind carried the occasional golden leaf to the ground, bees were plentiful, and a few sprinkles came down followed by rays of sunshine – all showing the awesome power and diversity of God’s creation. It was a beautiful celebration with our annual blessing from our Sisters, all of whom were presented with a single white rose as a sign of our love and gratitude for their dedication and support of the Academy. Our combined Chamber Singers and Chorus sang, and our instrumental students also shared their talents. Following Mass, our fall sports captains led us in intentions and provided hard hats and shovels to our campaign leadership for the ceremonial ground breaking. Sr. Maria Pares, OSF ’58, led the blessing and captured the students’ enthusiasm for the project. We made the leap of faith to begin construction over summer, even though there are still funds to be raised. With our growing student body, we could not sit back and wait another year while our campaign concludes. Moving forward meant we had

to believe our families, friends and alumnae would continue to step forward to financially support the project. We were confident that our supporters would be even more excited to be a part of this historic campaign for our current students and generations of young women to come, once they could see construction underway! An investment in Sacred Heart Academy is a solid one. Our enrollment is growing. We have moved from a school of 406 students to an enrollment of 475 (including 17 girls transferring from Holy Angels Academy) this year. This one-year growth in enrollment (over 17%), was made possible because Phase I of our Celebrate our Tradition, Build our Future Campaign was completed last fall. We converted our Sisters’ convent into the Sisters of St. Francis Academic Wing with nine new state-of-the-art classrooms, increasing the capacity to accept more students. If you have supported the Celebrate our Tradition, Build our Future Campaign, thank you again. If you have yet to give, please support the campaign with a financial contribution. We need your help to conclude this campaign which is enhancing the opportunities for all at Sacred Heart Academy.

Dear Friends of Sacred Heart Academy,

As I begin my term as Chair of the Board of Directors, I am excited about my new leadership role and grateful for the opportunity to continue my commitment to my alma mater. I thank outgoing Chair, Barbara Rooney ’74, who has been a thoughtful and inspirational leader. Her passion for S.H.A. runs deep and was a constant as she enthusiastically and successfully guided the activities of the Board. Though she will be missed on the Board, we will continue to benefit from Barbara’s expertise and energy, and wish her well in her new position as Athletic Director. Also to be thanked for their many years of dedicated service and loyalty are outgoing directors Paul Kolkmeyer, Sister Teresa Miklitsch, Sister Nancy Fortkort ’53 and Crystal Austin-Seymore. They are exceptional individuals and we appreciate their contributions. We welcome new board members Sister Candace Tucci, Sister Marygrace Polino, Cindy Odom, Walter Ludwig and Ann Wegrzyn ’76. The Board of Directors and I look forward to a busy and productive year as we draw our attention to initiatives that include the Celebrate our Tradition, Build our Future Campaign, adoption of the Common Core State Standards and refining our institutional goals through strategic planning. In assuming my new responsibilities, I am reminded of the generosity of alumnae, parents, educators and friends who support Sacred Heart Academy. We are strengthened by the willingness of others to share their talents and gifts. The contributions you make are a blessing and allow us to focus on what is most important, the remarkable young women who attend Sacred Heart Academy. We are committed to providing our students with a comprehensive and rigorous learning environment that will give them the tools needed to be successful. We remain steadfast in creating a culture rooted in Franciscan values that will help them in their decision making. We present opportunities for them to find their place in society, to realize their uniqueness, to give back, to lead. Our lives are busy and time is precious. Each of us must determine our level of commitment to what is important to us. I invite you to consider spending more time or some time at Sacred Heart Academy. Come cheer on the Sharks at a sporting event. You will enjoy the high level of competition and more importantly, your presence will be felt by our student athletes. Attend a play, concert or musical. You will be impressed with the poise and confidence of our student performers. Your applause will be heard. Participate along with students, faculty, staff and others in the Day of Sharing by volunteering at one of over 50 community sites. Sacred Heart Academy cares. Talk to our students about your career journey at Career Day. They will learn from hearing your story. Choose to work on a planning committee for Sandstone, Scholarship and Awards or the Golf Tournament. Your ideas are welcomed. Good things are happening at Sacred Heart – interesting things, amazing things. Be part of them. Show your support by visiting, cheering, giving, praying, joining, leading. Sincerely,

Sacred Heart Academy’s Internship Program

BY KATIE OSTRANDER ‘09

HE INTERNSHIP program at Sacred Heart Academy provides an opportunity for our young women to work in a professional environment to gain “real world” experience in a field they are interested in pursuing. Being able to have this experience prior to attending college is a valuable way for the students to focus on what field they want to study and the type of career path they hope to pursue. Throughout the course of the internship program the students also learn and develop skills, such as constructing an effective resume and cover letter. They learn the “dos and don’ts” of professional dress, and how to effectively GET INVOLVED communicate with BECOME A their colleagues. The MENTOR program prepares our students to apply for internships and jobs in the future and gives them the confidence they need in order to succeed. Being able to plant the seed of professional success early on has a tremendous impact on our young women throughout college and as they begin their careers. Additionally, the internship program is a great way for our alumnae to reach out into the Sacred Heart community to assist our students in growing beyond the classroom. During my participation in the S.H.A. Internship Program, I worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in the public relations department. While

at RPCI, I developed releases, updated a patient database, and was able to work on-site during various departmental events. I enjoyed being able to work in a professional setting, and being taken seriously as a high school intern. Throughout the internship, I was able to learn how to compose myself in a professional job setting. The internship is a great way to experience a business professional environment. It assisted me in deciding what college courses I would like to take, and the life skills I learned were extremely useful when I was applying for other internship opportunities. I recently graduated from Canisius College with degrees in Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, and Art History. I am currently attending graduate school this fall in the Forensic Accounting program and am also working at Citibank. Melissa Federice ‘07 worked in two doctors’ offices during her time in the Internship Program: a plastic surgeon and an eye surgeon. Through her time working with them, she was able to be in the operating room and observe detailed procedures. She developed a tremendous technical skill, as she experienced how a medical office functions. “I would absolutely recommend the internship program to my younger sister,

Alexa, a member of the Sacred Heart Class of 2016, and any other student who may be interested, because the internship was a great way to reassure me that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field,” notes Melissa. Melissa recently graduated from the University at Buffalo with both a Biology degree and Psychology degree, and is planning to attend medical school in the near future. Currently, she is working with an eye surgeon. As part of the Internship Program last spring, Alana Knaebe ‘13 worked at the Thomas Reynolds Center at Daemen College. At the Center, she was able to gain experience with children with disabilities and learning disorders in an after-school program. The program assists children in focusing on what they are learning in school, and provides tutoring services in areas where they may need more attention. Alana was able to work one-on-one with the students, assisting them with their homework and helping them study for upcoming tests. Alana says, “In addition to the benefits of working in a professional setting, I found the S.H.A. Internship Program valuable because our instructor, Mrs. Margaret Wietig, taught us how to compose ourselves in a professional setting, including how to speak correctly and dress appropriately. These are critical skills as we continue our education and

start enter the working world and I am grateful to Mrs. Wietig for helping me start down the right path.” The internship program allowed Alana to narrow her focus on a career path she would like to follow. Being able to get to know each student individually and observe her growth and development over the 10-week period was an extremely rewarding experience. After being able to work one-on-one with the students and monitor their progress, she found that she would like to work in a similar setting in the future. This fall, she is studying Psychology at Niagara University. The Internship Program is an excellent opportunity to engage the Sacred Heart community in finding placement sites and providing mentors for our students as they begin to explore their options for the future in a handson, professional environment. Alumnae, parents and friends are encouraged to assist the Academy and grow this important program, as we help our students develop into vibrant, successful young women.

“DEPENDABLE AND FULL OF BOUNDLESS ENERGY” HE SACRED HEART students that have come to my dental office are amazing: Involved in sports, clubs and stretching their academic goals, with time to spare for an internship. Those Sacred Heart girls bring with them enthusiasm for everything. What a treat for me to share in that! It is refreshing to hear their perspectives on our world and their ideas on how to make a difference in our community. I have never had concern about proper attire or behavior. Each girl has been dependable (despite their crazy schedules) and a lot of fun. The time commitment is easy, and because there can be nothing more boring than “shadowing” in the workplace, we created a list of objectives that each intern needs to complete so they have a task for each day they are in the office. At the end of the semester they have a clear picture of what they have learned. That one simple idea has made the experience much more fun for everyone. I have the best job in the world, so I enjoy the opportunity to talk about the incredible science of dentistry, but also, the opportunity to share how my Sacred Heart foundation shapes my philosophy of care for my patients and for my staff. The Internship Program is valuable in helping students identify ways to share their gifts and talents in our community. By spending time with alumnae in differing job situations, they can start to identify the type of service that connects with them. — PATTY HABERMAN ’80, DDS Experiences like Patty’s are rewarding and mutually beneficial! If you would like to get involved with Sacred Heart students by serving as a mentor, please contact Susan in the Alumnae Office at 716.834.2101, ext. 352.

LIVING THE SPIRIT AWARD

Buffalo Prep Buffalo Prep was created in 1989 by education and community leaders to serve two distinct, related purposes: 1) to help bright, economically disadvantaged minority students prepare for, obtain entrance into and excel in demanding college preparatory high schools, and 2) to help our partner private, independent and college preparatory public schools recruit, embrace, and take advantage of a more diverse student body. Connecting multiple levels of education, this unique enrichment program enhances the quality of life for more than 300 disadvantaged students and their families each year and serves as a stepping stone to a brighter future. Buffalo Prep partners with 13 consortium private high schools offering nearly $400,000 in financial aid to our students each year. The organization, in turn, provides these schools with the opportunity to take advantage of a more diverse student body, which helps all students, families and staff members forge relationships that transcend racial, ethnic and economic differences. This diversity helps to prepare all students for colleges and workplaces that are becoming more representative of America’s greater diverse community. Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart and Buffalo Prep have been partners in education for many years. Since 1999, more than 50 of our best and brightest students have benefitted from Buffalo Prep’s impressive programs. We look forward to continuing this mutually beneficial relationship for years to come. S P I R I T.

A MESSAGE FROM LAURA BRADLEY

The most rewarding job you’ll ever have THERE IS SOMETHING about a S.H.A. girl that makes her stand out. I can’t tell you how many times I have met an amazing woman, found out that she is a S.H.A. graduate, and then said, “Of course!” There is something about S.H.A. girls… is it their zest for life? Their determination? Their strength under stress? Their ability to look animosity in the face and get through it, even when the odds are against them? Is it the intensity and excitement of Spirit Week that keeps their spirit and fervor for life alive in all that they face and in the way they view life and others? I can’t put it into words exactly, but I think it is somehow connected to the spirit that we learn at Sacred Heart Academy. We will all face many challenges in life. My first major challenge in life was when I was diagnosed with cancer during my sophomore year at S.H.A. When I reflect on that, I think about how lucky I was to be in this safe, positive environment, To “say yes” to this opportunity, seeing friends daily, during my first really trying time in life. This is part of what simply contact Susan Reiser inspires me to volunteer as a Class Ambassador – so that I can be there for my Daniels ‘92, at 716.834.2101, former Sacred Heart classmates during their trying times; making sure they don’t ext. 321 or at sdaniels@ feel alone. As spiritual women, it is comforting that we can all pray for each other sacredheartacademy.org or Sister in times of need, no matter what city or country we live in. Most of all, I love Mara Walton ‘59, at 716.834.2102, celebrating my classmates’ successes with them, besides catching up on what is new ext. 317 or at smara@ and laughing about the good times we had at S.H.A. sacredheartacademy.org. We are S.H.A. girls and we have a certain spirit. The gals in my class are awesome mothers and they are CEOs of worldwide corporations. They have Ph.D.s and they are partners of law firms. They are marathon runners and tri-athletes. They have been abandoned and they have lost the loves of their lives to death. They have had GET INVOLVED kidney transplants and double mastectomies. They have fought cancer and lost their children BE A CLASS to tragic accidents. They are flight attendants who travel the world. They are distinguished AMBASSADOR alumnae, teachers, accountants, business owners and single mothers who have raised their children all by themselves. And they are so much more. They are my classmates, and I am proud of them. I will help them in any way that I can. I am honored to be their Class Ambassador. I invite you to join me and become an ambassador for your class! This role provides you with the opportunity to keep your classmates connected to Sacred Heart in the following ways: • By remaining in contact with our Advancement Office, you will be able to communicate information related to a wide variety of programs and events in a timely manner. You will be the “link” that allows your classmates to stay up to date with what is happening, and allow them to engage with our many activities. • You will update contact information for “lost alumna” or identify changes in address information for classmates, so that communication is not broken over time. • You will be able to share the news of your classmates with the S.H.A. community by keeping our Advancement Department aware of significant milestones in your classmates’ lives (e.g., marriages, births and career developments). It may be the most rewarding job that you’ll ever have; all you need is the desire to help and an open heart. Your classmates will thank you for it!

Make a Difference— Volunteer for Career Day

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all of Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart’s alumnae, current and past parents and friends who have given back to the Academy with your time, talents and treasures. I am amazed that year after year, our S.H.A. community comes out in full force in so many different ways – from donations to our capital campaign and loyalty fund to support of the Walkathon, the Scholarship and Awards Dinner, the Sandstone Auction and the Golf Tournament. Sacred Heart is successful because of you! And while the students were off for the summer enjoying the beautiful Buffalo weather, the Advancement Department was busy planning for the 2013-14 year. As you may have noticed, a survey has been included in this issue of “The Cordecho” and I ask you to take a few minutes to fill out the survey and return it us. Your feedback will provide us with insight into how effectively we communicate and how you would like to be involved. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter. We look forward to a wonderful year as the Advancement Team continues to work with you to support the remarkable young women of S.H.A.

I was excited to have the chance to get them thinking about their career paths and offer some insight into how their time at Sacred Heart may influence their lives, even 10 or 20 years down the road,” reflects Courtney, who has since permanently relocated to the Buffalo area with her family. “I am glad to be back in Western New York for many reasons, including the chance to spend more time with my fellow alums, and hopefully continue to serve as a mentor for students at Sacred Heart!” Career Day is one of the wonderful ways for our alumnae to re-engage. In addition to Courtney’s inspiring key note address, last February’s Career Day program featured more than 30 accomplished alumnae representing a wide variety of professions. After a luncheon in S.H.A.’s beautiful Library and Media Center, the presenters spent their afternoons meeting with small groups of students, sharing stories and answering questions about their college and professional experiences. When asked to reflect on their Career Day experiences, many students noted that they appreciated the opportunity to meet with women from such a broad range of professions, and that after Career Day, they had a clearer idea of what their work life might be like and what careers truly captured their interests. They were grateful to the alumnae who generously gave of their time and shared their many talents. The Advancement Department is currently seeking volunteers for Career Day 2014, which takes place on Friday, February 7. If you are interested in inspiring our students by getting involved in this fantastic opportunity, please contact Susan Reiser Daniels ‘92 at sdaniels@ sacredheartacademy.org or 716.834.2101, ext. 352.

FROM THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION BOARD CHAIR

Dear Alumnae, GOLF TOURNAMENT For nearly 20 years, alumnae have gathered in community to enjoy a day of golf in support of Sacred Heart Academy’s Emergency Assistance for Tuition (E.A.T.) Fund. This fund assists students who face unforeseen financial crisis and would otherwise be unable to continue their Sacred Heart education. This year was no exception and was bigger and better than ever, with the addition of husbands, fathers and friends joining in on the fun. Thanks to generous contributions of time, talent and treasure from a group that included a dedicated and hard-working committee, past and present S.H.A. parents, friends, alums, faculty members and even current students, the event at the beautiful Links of Ivy Ridge in Akron, NY was our most successful tournament to date – raising a record $7,500 to help our students in need. Our 2013 Golf Tournament was truly a collaboration of all those who value the education at Sacred Heart and seek to help our students when they need it most. If this describes you, please mark your calendar for July 21, 2014 or contact Susan Reiser Daniels ’92 at sdaniels@sacredheartacademy. org or 716.834.2101, ext. 352 to be part of our fantastic committee.

SANDSTONE PARTY MARCH 15, 2014 This year marks the 8th annual Sandstone Party, chaired by Beth Montague, mother of Valerie ’15 and Jenna ’17, and Mary Perna Greenwald, mother of Amanda ’16. Our 2014 event promises to be the best yet! Auctions, student performances, dinner and refreshments are components of this lively night filled with friends and fun. The event is held at the Academy and is open for guests 21 years and older. The Sandstone Party has grown over the years and we are reaching out to the entire Sacred Heart community for your support. There are many ways to get involved – donate an auction item, work with your class to put together a classsponsored live auction package, join the committee, sponsor the event personally or through your company, or simply purchase a ticket! This is a wonderful opportunity to gather with your classmates while supporting Sacred Heart. We encourage ALL alumnae to return to S.H.A. to see fellow classmates, faculty and current students with whom you share a common love of Sacred Heart!

This year, I am privileged to chair the Alumnae Association Board and I hope I can be as dedicated and diligent as my predecessor, Kathy Allen Benson ’66. For nine years, Kathy worked tirelessly to establish a very active Alumnae Association. Most of you hear from us during the Annual Loyalty Fund Campaign, but there are many more opportunities for you to be involved. No matter how many years have separated you, we’ll enjoy seeing you back. It’s great to be refreshed in “Mind, Spirit and Body.” Sacred Heart welcomed us as students and continues to welcome us as alumnae. There are so many offerings for all of us to participate in and come together in community! Here are just a couple of the reasons I will be returning to 3860 Main Street: Masses on Holy Days: I enjoy the idea of returning to Sacred Heart to celebrate Mass with the community of girls, faculty, staff and alumnae. I also love the idea of meeting up with my S.H.A. friends at Mass, and heading out to lunch for some fun after!

Vintage Uniforms Needed! Sacred Heart Academy uniforms are needed for the upcoming performance of a play written by Penny Schnitter Frese ‘61. A must-see for everyone in our community, the play is about the life of Leonarda Hannappel, OSF, the first principal of Sacred Heart Academy. If you have saved your (or your mother’s or grandmother’s) uniform, we would be grateful if you would be willing to loan it to Penny for this special production. She is seeking the earliest uniforms worn at S.H.A. from the 20s and 30s – the dresses with white collars and cuffs – as well as the maroon jumper uniforms. Uniforms may also be needed from the 1980s or 90s. Additionally, if you graduated in the 1930s or 40s and have photos of the uniforms from that time period, that will be helpful as well. Please contact Sr. Mara Walton, OSF ‘59 at 716.314.2101, ext. 317 or smara@sacredheartacademy.org if you have uniforms, photos or both that you are willing to loan out for the production. All items will be returned. Penny Schnitter Frese ‘61 received her MFA in Directing from Ohio University and has taught theatre at Hiram College and Kent State University. She is thrilled to be able to share her gift with the S.H.A. community, so stay tuned for more details. You will not want to miss this!
