BUFFALO CITY GEARS UP TO DELIVER A SAFE FESTIVE SEASON CAMPAIGN BCM: The Buffalo City Metro has been boosted by multi-million rands worth of donations ahead of its festive season safety campaign. The confidence shown by donors to Buffalo City Metro traffic and law enforcement through the state of the art donations is going to make a huge difference this summer. Earlier today, Metro Executive Mayor Councillor Xola Pakati launched the City’s safer festive season campaign to kick start the summer season in Buffalo City. The Executive Mayor together with the portfolio head for public safety Cllr Sangweni Matwele also handed over road traffic safety mechanisms to beef up road safety awareness for this season to keep BCM residents and tourists safe during the summer. The following donations have been received by BCM from the National Department of Transport, RTMC and SAB: The newly revamped Alcohol Evidence Centre & Evidentiary Breath Alcohol Tester; The new Mobile Vehicle Testing Stations; The Cattle Truck; The new Electronic Learners Licence Test System and The new Tactical Radio Network installed in the Traffic Vehicles. Executive Mayor Pakati said: “We are very fortunate this year that we have received multimillion rands worth of donations from our national partners SAB, RTMC, DOT to enable Buffalo City to be more effective. These donations are a reflection of the confidence that these stakeholders have in our strictness, safety

campaigns and brand.” “One of the priorities I outlined yesterday was on the need to better cooperate with the South African Police Service and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board to monitor and close down illegally operating Taverns in many areas of our towns. Perhaps, it is critical to involve the South African Breweries in such a campaign.” “We have also made an undertaking that we will come hard on drug dens and prostitution rings that are operating in certain places in the city.” The SA breweries also donated two evidentiary breath alcohol tester (EBAT) as part of revamping the AEC SA Breweries have in partnership with Dräger. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) donated two Mobile Vehicle Testing Stations (MVTS). The units comprise onboard computers, printers, cameras, equipped with all the technology found inside a standard Vehicle Testing Center. The MVTS will be utilized for testing vehicle fitness on public roads. The national department of transport (NDOT) donated the new computerised learner’s license test system (CLLT). The system is a 4IR replacement of the manual learner’s license system. The test is fully computerised and it takes still an hour to complete the test. The system selects a total of 64 random questions from a list of 1 200 questions on the system. The pass rate of the test is still the same as the manual system. newsroom@rekordmediafs.co.za (Picture/s: Facebook)

REKORD 03 BISHO: The suicide of a 16-year old Eastern Cape learner recently have once more thrust the issue of bullying into the spotlight. Lathitha Nako, a grade 10 learner here at Bhisho high school, swallowed a pesticide and died in hospital shortly after. Her devastated family is demanding that bullying at schools must be addressed to prevent similar tragedies. Before her death, she spoke openly about the bullying she endured on social media platforms. Speaking out telling the world what she is going through, contemplating suicide. Then, going through with it. But that is not the person her family knew. Lathitha Nako wanted to become a doctor. Her family had high hopes, but it was dashed by this tragedy. Mother Kholeka Nako says, “My heart is sore because l will never see Lathitha again l will only see her in pictures. My heart will remain sore Bisho High School has failed. I struggle to sleep.” Calls from all quarters are being made to get to the bottom of the matter. Khula Community

Development Project’s, Petros Majola says a program needs to be developed to stop bullying in schools. “Let us sit down and develop a program that deals with bullying at schools. We are aware that they do have their policies but at the same time we are not sure that they are vocal about these policies.” The Provincial Department of Education is also investigating the circumstances leading to her suicide. Eastern Cape Department of Education Spokesperson, Vuyiseka Mboxela says an urgent investigation was done after the incident. “There must be an urgent investigation. There will be a meeting which is going to look holistic into this learner which is then going to give a directive and there is a multidisciplinary committee because there are other people outside the department who interested in this matter.” Social workers were also deployed to the school to provide support to learners and teachers.
