Based in Toronto, Ontario, The Legacy Market™ (TLM) is a new cannabis brand that will be launching on the OCS as of February 2023. As the name implies, the vision behind TLM is to bring high-quality cannabis with “black market” qualities to Canadian consumers. The brand was founded by cannabis enthusiast, Mahad Mohamed Ali who’s long history with the plant has allowed him to create many important connections within the industry.
“I’m the founder of The Legacy Market™ and [we] collaborate with breeders and pheno hunters like Alchemy Genetics, Space Sherpa, Tunaaaa Room, Lady Jane Labs and Lush Cannabis Co. Also with cultivators and extractors like Origin Coast, Kronic Relief, West Quebec Growers, VIGR Life Cannabis, Gripon 420, Oaziz Extracts and more that we’ll be announcing shortly, ” says Ali.

Ali has invested a lot of his time and attention into bringing over aspects of the legacy world into his product. He feels high quality cannabis comes from great genetics that have been grown with care and attention from start to finish. Both the pre-harvest and post-harvest methods are incredibly important in having a successful product hit the shelves. When it comes to obtaining genetics, TLM™ chooses their strains based on qualities such as taste and smell, over high THC percentage.
“I’m a cannabis patient first and foremost, and have been

LEAVING A LEGACY
growing since the MMAR (Medical Marijuana) days. I look at it as a grower first to see if it’s a viable genetic that is worth growing, and second, as a cannabis consumer depending on how it smells, tastes, looks, potency, etc. It’s never chosen based off of COAs (Certificate of Analysis) and high THC - ever,” says Ali.
Along with the process of growing the plants, selecting the right seeds can set your product apart. Since many Licensed Producers (LPs) utilize the same sources for seeds, we end up seeing a surplus of the same product in stores. This leaves customers pondering between which version of GorillaGlueorBlack Cherry Punch they may dabble in.
Instead, TLM™ works with breeders and phenohunters who have been around, way before legalization; allowing them to obtain the quality and variety this industry needs. TLM™ is currently working with four growers across Canada.
“We’re very selective on who grows our TLM™ genetics and do business with. Out of the 400+ Licenced Cultivators in Canada - we work with four currently: Origin Coast in Nova Scotia, Kronic Relief in Ontario, VIGR Life Cannabis in Saskatchewan and Gripon 420 in Quebec,” says Ali.
Cannabis is unique in that each user’s genetics will impact their experience with a particular strain.
While some people enjoy fruity and floral flavours, others may look for more earthy varieties. For Ali, it’s all about that sweet, candy-like profile, which may be why many of their offerings fall under the category of dessert strains. The current offerings are a selection of dessert profiles with names like WhippedCream, HoodCandyz,Wedding Mints, Pancakes, Cheerioz, Black Milk, Sherbmints and Pure Michiganto name more than a few. We’ll also purchase odd lots from other groups with their own genetics as well if we deem the product is of our quality,” says Ali.
Over the last few years, the cannabis industry has fed into the consumer demand for higher THC products. In 2020, it was rare to see a flower product labelled over 23% THC, but now, in 2023, we are seeing ranges between 25 - 35%. However, the higher the THC level does not necessarily correlate to a better high. Many will note how certain strains, even at >20% can help them achieve a more well rounded experience than those labeled 30%+. At the end of the day, it’s a lack of education driving this trend. This is one of the reasons why TLM™ team is deciding to make their product choices based on other aspects of the plant.
“We’ve been very vocal since day one to not just choose your Cannabis based on the THC content. We have some 17% THC genetics that will blow out some of these so called 30%+ on the markets - and you can take that in your pipe
and smoke it,” says Ali.

“ There’s truly only one way to bridge the gap between the legacy market and the regulated market -- by including and empowering the individuals who created it. This is the reason why we advocate and showcase who our Breeders and Phenohunters are. Eventually these individuals will be transitioning over to the regulated market like we did, and we want to make sure there’s a market ready for them that’s aware of their skills and hard work,” says Ali.
Currently, TLM™provides three different tiers of cannabis dried flower, ranging from AA, AAA, and AAAA. The team has future plans to collaborate with extraction partners such as Oaziz Extracts (Curado), Lady Jane Labs (Sauce Rosin) and Coulson Cannabis (Persy). You can find their product on medical platforms such as UTNDR, MENDO, Hybrid Pharm and Teedy. The brand recently launched in Saskatchewan and is eagerly prepping for their February launch into the OCS and Manitoba. Make sure to check them out at www.thelegacymarket.ca
