MUSCALA IS THIRD BISON NBA DRAFTEE In June 2013 Mike Muscala capped off an historic night for Bucknell and the Patriot League when he was selected 44th overall in the National Basketball Association Draft. Muscala was officially picked by the Dallas Mavericks, but his rights were traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Muscala was the third Bucknell men’s basketball player to be drafted in the NBA. Al Leslie ‘81 was taken in the second round (37th overall) by the Indiana Pacers in 1981, and Jaye Andrews ‘85 was a seventh-round pick of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1985. Muscala also became the third Patriot League player ever drafted, and the second in a matter of a few hours. Earlier in the evening, Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was picked 10th overall by the Portland Trailblazers. Colgate’s Adonal Foyle was taken by the Golden State Warriors with the No. 8 pick in 1997.

HOLDEN BECOMES BUCKNELL’S 4TH OLYMPIAN
Under the direction of 1983 Bucknell graduate Jay Wright, the Villanova men’s basketball team has returned to national prominence. Since arriving at Villanova in 2001, Wright helped the Wildcats reach a number of milestones, including a then-school-record 28 wins in 2005-06, a Big East regular-season title, a first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and an Elite Eight trip in 2006. All of that was surpassed in March 2009, however, when Wright led his team into the Final Four at Ford Field in Detroit. Wright was a three-year letterman in basketball at Bucknell, where he received the Kribbs Award as team MVP in 1981-82 and the Musser Award for leadership in 1982-83. Wright was a freshman at Bucknell when former Bison coach Pat Flannery was a senior, and the two were publicly reunited in December 2005 when Wright brought his fourth-ranked Wildcats to Sojka Pavilion to play in front of the largest crowd in school history. Villanova prevailed, 79-60. Before arriving at Villanova in 2001, Wright was head coach at Hofstra for seven seasons, where he led the Pride to a pair of America East titles. In August 2005 he served as head coach of FORMER BISON COACH the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the World University Games in Turkey. Wright was named PAT FLANNERY (L) WITH USA Basketball Co-Developmental Coach of the JAY WRIGHT Year after leading the U.S. to an 8-0 record.
Another unlikely chapter in the amazing basketball story of J.R. Holden unfolded in the summer of 2008, when the Pittsburgh native and 1998 Bucknell graduate suited up for Team Russia at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Holden’s underdog career path has been well-documented. First, he transformed himself from a lightly recruited guard into a 1,300-point scorer and a two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection at the Division I level. Holden had a successful and lucrative overseas career that took him to Latvia, Belgium, Greece and Russia. He became one of the top stars in European basketball, where he led the powerful CSKA Moscow team to the 2006 Euroleague title, and as a naturalized Russian citizen, he nailed the game-winning jumper to give Russia the Eurobasket 2007 title and a berth in the Olympics. In Beijing he started all five games and averaged 38.6 minutes, 17.6 points and 4.8 assists per game. In his Olympic debut, he had 19 points in Russia’s victory over Iran, then he added five points against Croatia, 25 against Lithuania, 20 against Australia and 19 against Argentina. Among all Olympians in pool play, he was the No. 5 scorer, and he also ranked No. 1 in minutes played and tied for third in assists. Holden became Bucknell’s fourth Olympian. The first was Dave Morley, who swam for his native Bahamas in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Cindy Ryder Matthes ‘88 competed for Team USA in rowing at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, while rower Brett Wilkinson ‘98 was also a J.R. HOLDEN member of Team USA at the 2004 Games in Athens.
