Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Roger J. Schwanhausser ’75 - Inducted in 2002 Roger Schwanhausser was one of the leaders of a terrific Bison swimming team that captured four straight Middle Atlantic Conference and East Coast Conference team championships. In addition to winning three individual conference titles, Schwanhausser earned gold medals on 11 different relays. He graduated with Bucknell records in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM. His son, Stephen ’03, also swam for the Bison and set school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. They are the only father-son combination in school history in any sport to have held school records. (Bucknell Hall of Fame Class of 2002)

Catherine Karpuk Seward ’77 - Inducted in 1993 The first female athlete at Bucknell to receive AllAmerica recognition, Cathy Karpuk Seward earned four varsity letters as a diver on the swimming and diving teams, and she is generally regarded as the finest female diver ever at Bucknell. A team co-captain in 1976-77, she placed fifth in the three-meter dive and sixth in the one-meter event that year at the AIAW Small College National Championships to earn the All-America honors. Karpuk Seward had 47 first-place finishes in her four-year dual-meet career. (Bucknell Hall of Fame Class of 1993)

Edmund Jared Thimme, Jr. ’66 - Inducted in 1990 Winner of five individual Middle Atlantic Conference swimming championships, Jerry Thimme also won the 200 and 1650-yard freestyles at the 1964 NCAA College Division Championships to help lead Bucknell to the team title. He was an All-American in four events in 1964 and two more the following year. Thimme was a part of MAC championship teams in 1964 and 1965. In 1964 he won MAC gold medals in the 200 free, 500 free and 400 free relay, and a year later he repeated in all three events. He also won the MAC title in the 200 free as a senior in 1966. Stephen P. Winings ’74 - Inducted in 2008 Steve Winings was named an All-American after finishing eighth in the 50-yard freestyle at the 1971 NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever by a Bucknell swimmer. He captured the Middle Atlantic Conference title in the 50 free every year from 1971-74, making him the first swimmer in conference history to win an event four years in a row. He also won the 100 breaststroke in 1971 and 1973 and captured seven more MAC titles in relays, including four in the 400 free relay. Winings was twice a silver medalist in the 50 free at the Eastern Championships. He co-captained the 1973-74 team to the only undefeated season in Bucknell history. James P. Smigie ’65 - Inducted in 1980 Jim Smigie won the 100 and 200-yard butterfly races to pace Bucknell to the 1964 NCAA College Division Championship. A co-captain of the 196465 Bison team and a member of teams that had a combined 28-4 record and won three straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, Smigie also won NCAA gold medals in the 400-yard medley relay in 1964 and the 200 fly in 1965 when Bucknell finished third in the team competition. The first MAC swimmer to win seven individual conference gold medals in his career, Smigie was undefeated in 34 dual meets in the 200 fly. (Bucknell Hall of Fame Class of 1980)

Recent Summer Events/Results

2011 USA National Championships (Aug. 2-6, 2011 • Avery Aquatics Center • Palo Alto, Calif.) Bucknell Participants: Men: Thomas Brown, Billy Krause, Mike Nicholson, Matthew Segar, Eric Sokolosky, Christian Treat. Highlights: Brown (200 back), Krause (400 IM) and Nicholson (400 IM) competed in individual events, while all six Bison swam in time trials. Segar posted one of the better individual performances, coming just .14 seconds shy of an Olympic Trials cut in the 200 free time trial.

The summer months are an important time for Bison swimmers and divers to improve. Bucknell student-athletes have competed at a number of summer events in recent years, including the Charlotte UltraSwim, MidAtlantic Championships, USA Swimming National Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials.

2012 Charlotte UltraSwim (May 10-13, 2012 • Mecklenberg County Aquatic Center • Charlotte, N.C.) Bucknell Participants: Men: Mike Nicholson, Christian Treat. Highlights: Nicholson finished 19th of 54 in 400 IM and came within .35 seconds of an Olympic Trials cut.

2011 Charlotte UltraSwim (May 12-15, 2011 • Mecklenberg County Aquatic Center • Charlotte, N.C.) Bucknell Participants: Men: Thomas Brown, Billy Krause, Eric Sokolosky, Christian Treat. Women: Kelly Pontecorvo. Highlights: Sokolosky (100 fly, 100 free), Brown (100 back) and Treat (200 IM) finished in the top half of races.

2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix (June 3-6, 2012 • Haines International Swim Center • Santa Clara, Calif.) Bucknell Participants: Men: Mike Nicholson, Christian Treat. Women: Kelly Pontecorvo. Highlights: Nicholson posted an Olympic Trials cut in the 400 IM, beating the standard by .01 seconds. Treat reached the “C” final in three events, while Pontecorvo finished in the top half of the field in the 1,500 free.

2011 Mid-Atlantic Championships (July 20-23, 2011 • Kinney Natatorium • Lewisburg, Pa.) Bucknell Participants: Men: Thomas Brown, Mike Davitt, Billy Krause, Stephen McMillin, Mike Nicholson, Matthew Segar, Eric Sokolosky, Bryce Suchomel, Christian Treat. Women: Kelly Purcell, Kaitlyn Sweeney. Highlights: The 11 Bucknell swimmers combined for 13 top-eight finishes. Five different men posted multiple top-eight showings: Brown (100 back, 200 back), Nicholson (200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM), Segar (100 free, 200 free), Sokolosky (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, 200 free), Treat (200 IM, 100 breast). Segar claimed the only Bison victory, winning the 200 free.

Results: • Erik Heinemann (200 fly) - 2:04.60 (100th of 134) • Mike Nicholson (400 IM) - 4:32.19 (t-75th of 109) • Emily Norton (200 breast) - 2:44.35 (114th of 118) • Matthew Segar (200 free) - 1:54.49 (116th of 124)
