Becky & Colin planned an exotic vibe for their wedding, bursting with colour and wall-to-wall quirkiness at Priory House, Long Bennington.
W
e met through work and a shared love of theatre. Colin proposed on the third anniversary of our first date after Becky returned from six months working away. He’d secretly bought a ring in York five months earlier after Becky admired it in passing. The most important thing for us was having a venue that was ours for the day, had something distinctive about it and wasn’t corporate. The price you pay for that is having more responsibility and work. Our ceremony was in the venue conservatory with palm trees! They’d never used that room for the ceremony before but it was great for us because it
looked out onto the garden - it’s always worth asking about a change to routine if you want it! We were played in by our friend Hannah on the organ (Faure’s Pavanne); had readings from Colin’s children and our friend Beth Shouler (Roald Dahl and Phillip Pullman respectively); we wrote our own vows. We picked female friends and our mothers as witnesses to make sure our mothers’ names were on the wedding certificate. Everyone was given confetti and both of us, along with our wedding party, danced out into the garden to Etta James’ “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”.
