The unofficial election results are in and it looks like the Town of Buckeye has ridden off into the sunset and the City of Buckeye has taken its place. City coffers will also be a bit fuller as both land sale questions look to pass easily. As of this writing, most of our local school districts are all losing after the first counts. There are still many ballots yet to be counted, including provisional ballots and those mail-ins dropped off at the polls. Arlington has an 11.5% YES margin in passing their bond request, but are behind 3% to keep their current funding levels intact. Palo Verde fared badly, and is currently behind 25% to keep their funding levels the same. Liberty is holding their breath as their bond request is currently behind by 17 votes. The Buckeye Union High School District’s bond request is failing by 4.5%. Buckeye Elementary District is also currently behind in trying to keep their funding levels constant for the next 5 years, with the no vote holding a slim 45 vote margin over the YES vote. As in years past, there are still many ballots to be counted, and the districts are awaiting the final tally. Historically, school elections are won at the polling places, with more YES votes than no votes. Maricopa County Elections officials state that voters have until 5pm on Friday to verify their provisional ballots. Vote counts will be updated as needed at http://recorder.maricopa.gov/electionresults/eresults.aspx.

EXCITING NEWS Verlyne Meck to Publisher New Book Buckeye Voters Agree, It’s a City Now, No Longer a ‘Town’ Bob Bushner Buckeye, Ariz. (Nov. 5, 2013) – Sixty percent of voters agreed Tuesday that Buckeye should now be known as a “city” rather than a “town.” According to unofficial early election results, 2,608 voters accepted the recommendation by Buckeye officials that by changing its designation, Buckeye would have a better chance in its economic development efforts and creating new jobs for its residents. Some 1,739 electors didn’t agree with that recommendation. However, Mayor Jackie Meck, a native who has called Buckeye home for more than seven decades, was a proponent of the measure and was pleased with the election results. “This is great news for Buckeye and its residents,” Meck said Tuesday night. “This name change will provide an opportunity to further promote Buckeye as a location for business and industry. “Our goal is to provide new jobs so that our residents can work here and enjoy this quality of life with their families and friends.” Vice Mayor Brian McAchran agreed. “I want to thank our residents for this vote of confidence,” McAchran said. “Being known as a city will enhance our economic development efforts and will assist us as our community grows.” The change to the City of Buckeye, named one of the fastest growing suburbs a few years ago by Forbes Magazine and has been recognized as the ninth-fastest growing community in the nation, can help raise the profile of the community, supporters of the move believe.
