Eden District Council

Go Totally Locally this Christmas! Welcome to the Winter 2014 edition of All About Eden, our residents magazine which aims to let you know what your Council is doing in our communities. In previous editions, I mentioned the financial pressures placed on councils and the need to do things differently. I am pleased to tell you that we have been able to raise advertising revenue to pay for this magazine. I wish to thank our advertisers for their support. By the time you read this, Penrith Town Council will be well on the way to being set up. Penrith residents’ should have information on the services the new Council will offer, a precept will have been announced and arrangements for elections in May 2015 will be well in hand. Why not go Totally Locally for your Christmas shopping this year? Before you browse the web or make a journey to a larger neighbouring town, please consider what the specialist shops in Eden’s four market towns have to offer. Many people have told me that they have found an elusive or unusual gift for the person “who has everything or is very difficult to buy for.” We all know such people.

Eden District Council is offering free parking in our towns on the weekends in the run up to Christmas, check the local press for details. Our local shops offer friendly helpful service and advice on suitable gifts. So please take a look at your independent shops when you venture out for your Christmas shopping. There will also be a number of special events around the District including on 6 December for Small Business Saturday, when we will be working with local business organisations to attract shoppers to our towns. Finally, please spare a thought for our many residents who live alone or are some distance from their families. Community spirit and support is very strong in Eden. If you have elderly neighbours, do look out for them, but remember that many elderly people are fiercely independent so if you notice any changes, do make some gentle enquiries. A Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year to all our residents.

Penrit

h Invest in You Invest in Your Town – r Future

Independent shops and businesses in Penrith were the first in Eden District to sign up to the Totally Locally Campaign, this aims to encourage more people to shop in their local street, town or District.

Alan Reading Director of J&J Graham’s and Penrith’s Totally Locally Co-ordinator

The Totally Locally premise is that if each adult in Penrith switched just £5 of their weekly spend to an independent shop or business rather than a supermarket or online it would generate an additional £3.2 million for the area’s economy and support local jobs and facilities. Totally Locally is a social enterprise. Its bespoke campaign promotes great independent shops and businesses; it encourages people to think more about where they live and to support the businesses on their doorstep to help make their area more prosperous. Totally Locally is free to use for any town that wants it. Totally Locally was launched in Penrith by a group of independent shops and businesses on 22 March 2014. Alan Reading of J&J Graham’s is the co-ordinator of Totally Locally Penrith, he said: “There is a great deal of goodwill and support from the people of Penrith and District for the ideas behind Totally Locally Penrith. Since the launch in March 2014 we have enjoyed success with a Treasure Trail, two ‘Fiver Fests’ and given away hundreds of Totally Locally shopping bags during Penrith-on-a –Plate in July. “We have been featured in local press articles, on BBC Radio Cumbria and enjoy a substantial following on our Facebook page. It is also nice to see Appleby-in-Westmorland getting their campaign going and we wish them every success. We are currently discussing introducing a Loyalty Card Scheme with an unusual twist! “You will need to keep an eye on our Facebook page for details of what we are doing on this subject. As independent local businesses we would like to say thanks to the people of Penrith and surrounding area for their on-going interest and support.”

A Totally Locally Winter Warmer Recipe Tickle your taste buds and try this tasty Winter Warmer Recipe using Penrith Pepper Pot Sausage by Brougham Hall Foods and Brewers Droop Sausages by The Secret Garden Fine Meat Company. All Totally Locally ingredients from the Eden Valley. Alan Potter, the chef at J&J Graham’s in Penrith has created this special recipe for you to try at home using quality local produce available from shops and businesses participating in Totally Locally Penrith. Alan said: “I have created this dish by adapting a traditional French Cassoulet recipe into English for use with our quality local produce. As a chef we hardly need to go outside the county at all to get the quality ingredients we need to produce great tasty dishes. “In terms of striving for top quality and taste, the less food travels the better. Sourcing 8

produce from Eden’s and Cumbria’s clean and unspoilt environment is just fantastic there really is no comparison. “For example, the Brewers Droop Sausages produced by The Secret Garden Fine Meat Company. They feed their rare breed, free range pigs on a by-product from the Eden Brewery, at Brougham Hall (hence the product’s name). This diet is supplemented by J&J Graham’s supplying leftover bread which is also fed to the pigs. This creates a supremely tasty and Totally Locally sausage for this one pot wonder, Winter Warmer recipe. I hope you enjoy it.”

Food for thought!

Win a Food Waste Digester Food waste digesters are a great way of dealing with your leftover and unwanted food at home rather than throwing it in the bin and right now they are available to Eden householders for a fraction of the cost. There are two digesters available so you can choose the right one to suit your lifestyle. Both sit outside in the garden similar to compost bins, but these accept all of your cooked food waste including bones, meat, fish, bread, rice, pasta as well as uncooked food waste. The Green Johanna is designed to sit in a shady part of the garden and accepts all cooked and uncooked food waste as well as garden waste. This digester produces rich compost which can be used in the garden. This is available for £20 rather than the RRP of £108.90. The Green Cone (pictured) is the right choice for those who are less green fingered. It is designed to sit in a sunny position of a well-drained garden. Unlike the Johanna, the cone needs to be dug into the garden. This digester also accepts all cooked and uncooked food waste which is dropped into the underground digestion chamber. This is available for £15 rather than their RRP of £79.50. 12
