Explore the analog black and white darkroom. Students learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. All 35mm film, paper, and darkroom supplies are included, as well as access to the darkroom during the weeks of your class. If you do not have access to a camera, email kwilliams@burlingtoncityarts.org to borrow the studio’s camera (limited supplies).

Digital Photography

Learn the basics of making a great photograph from initial exposure to editing and printing in this comprehensive class. The class starts with an overview of camera controls and functions, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO ratings, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques, and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom are also covered, and students leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on our archival Epson printer. This class also includes assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content, and concepts explored in your photographs. Students should bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive. Open studio use is also included during the weeks of this class. No experience necessary.

Demystify Adobe Photoshop and create the digital images you envision! This class starts with the basics of the Photoshop toolbox and will cover exposure and color corrections, working with layers and masks to edit selectively, removing and adding content within images, appropriately sizing files for print or the web, and printing on BCA’s Epson inkjet printer. Bring a selection of digital image files or scanned negative files on a Mac-compatible flash or hard drive to the first class. No experience necessary. Digital Lab open studio hours are included during the weeks of your class.

Mixed Level Darkroom Photography

Prerequisite: Darkroom experience, including developing black and white prints, is required.

Refine your black and white darkroom skills and receive feedback on your work in this supportive, project-based class designed for students with some darkroom experience. Guided sessions to help you improve your printing and film processing techniques and discussion of the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual aspects of your work will be included. Alternative photographic processes will also be explored to expand your art form. Photo paper, 35mm film, and darkroom supplies are provided, as well as access to Darkroom open studio hours during the weeks of your class. Students should bring their own manual 35mm or medium format film camera plus a roll of exposed film to the first class. Custom Fabric Printing With Forbital Factory

Bring home a custom fabric that you design and print locally! This exciting workshop is a collaboration between BCA and South End neighbors Forbital Factory. Start out with a tour of Forbital Factory’s 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art apparel manufacturing facility. Then, down the street at BCA’s Digital Lab, learn how to make your favorite images or personal artwork print-ready, turning them into repeating patterns using Photoshop. We’ll send digital files back to Forbital Factory to be printed on fabric. Printing will be done after the workshop, and fabric pickup will be coordinated with students at a later date. Students will receive one yard of custom-printed, twill fabric.

Prerequisite: BCA Digital Photography class or proficiency using manual exposure controls on a digital camera.

Are you comfortable using a digital camera but would like to explore the technical and creative aspects of photography more deeply? This class focuses on expanding, editing, and refining your digital photographs to create the portfolio of work you envision. Organize and edit techniques in Adobe Lightroom and print on our Epson inkjet printer. This class is designed to address individual student interests while exploring ideas in contemporary photography. Students will also dig into the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual aspects of their work through supportive critique sessions. Open studio use is included during the weeks of this class. Bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a selection of digital files on a Mac-compatible external flash or hard drive to the first class.
