Local businesswoman Alison Page has taken over the Living magazines group of titles Berkhamsted Living, Tring Living, School Report and others – set up 17 years ago by Sandra Boothroyd-Todd. Alison, founder of the well-respected marketing consultancy Alison Page Marketing, has been a good friend of Sandra for many years. It was a chance conversation over Christmas that piqued Alison’s interest in buying and running these popular magazines. She said: ‘Sandra and her team have done a lot of work on behalf of Berkhamsted and Tring, and I’m thrilled to be taking on their mantle as I’ve always loved reading the magazines. ‘Having also known and worked with the team for many of my marketing consultancy clients over the years, I jumped at the opportunity to add a publishing arm to my business. ‘It’s a new challenge and I’m going to relish working with the many local community groups and businesses that make the magazines so welcomed when they drop through the door.’ When Sandra started Berkhamsted Living magazine in late 2001 it was only intended to be a small project. She said: ‘I hoped it would be an asset for the town and the kind of publication I would enjoy receiving myself. It grew into something much bigger than I had envisaged, especially with the launch of the Tring Living edition in 2007, and both publications have gained

Eggsactly. It’s the study of birds’ eggs. Sir David Attenborough has used the resources of Tring’s Natural History Museum to produce a documentary about new research into eggs and the remarkable structure of these miracles of nature. The Natural History Museum at the end of Akeman Street has the largest collection of eggs in the world. Using a cutting-edge 3D X-ray microscope the research team was able to study the eggs without damaging them. That made it the perfect location for Sir David to explore such questions as ‘how is an egg made?’, ‘why are they the shape they are?’ and ‘why lay an egg at all?’ The documentary entitled Attenborough’s Wonder of Eggs aired on BBC2 on 31 March. It included new research at the museum into one of the most iconic lost birds, the Great Auk, which was ﬂ ightless, tasty and easy to kill, so quickly became extinct. ● Additionally…more than 300 hummingbirds have had their feathers rufﬂ ed up in a recent spruce up. Conservationists at Tring’s Natural History Museum have been busy restoring the historic specimens which have been on display since the 1800s. The six month project involved cleaning, repairing and replacing broken beaks. Museum Conservator Chelsea McKibbin said: “We had to be quite meticulous in our cleaning.”

LITTER FRONTLINE REACHES A41 Littering drivers are responsible for a staggering eight tonnes of rubbish along the A41. In a week-long campaign in March, a 20-strong crew from the borough council collected masses of rubbish including coffee cups, bottles and take-away containers. They cleaned up along the slip-roads, junctions, verges and the central reservation from the M25 to the Buckinghamshire boundary. A Keep Britain Tidy national survey has revealed that litter in the UK could be killing over 3m shrews, voles and mice each year. Litter also harms larger animals, with the RSPCA dealing with an animal killed or injured by litter every two hours. Dacorum Borough Council asks you to report litter or fly-tipping by visiting www.dacorum.gov.uk/litter. There is now a £200 fixed penalty fine for littering from a vehicle; it pays to take your rubbish home.

EARTH DAY TARGET Oakman Inns aims to phase out single-use plastics within a year. The pub, restaurant and hotel chain has pledged to banish single-use plastics by Earth Day 2019 – 22 April. Oakman runs the Kings Arms in Berkhamsted, the Akeman in Tring and the Red Lion in Water End among others across the south of England and the Midlands. Peter Borg-Neal, Oakman Inns’ CEO, said: ‘Oakman has a reputation for leading the way and, to a certain extent, it’s now up to us to show what can be done with the support of all our stakeholders, including our suppliers.’ 8 | Tring Living

Improvements to Tring Park School for the Performing Arts are well underway, with great progress being made over the past few weeks. ‘Work progressed well over the Easter holidays and the construction team have taken advantage of the recent fi ne weather to press ahead with pouring the cement slabs that form the footprint of the new building,’ said deputy principal Anselm Barker. ‘The shell of the lower-ground floor is almost complete, and work has begun on the ground floor level as the building starts to rise up into the air. It should take three to four months to complete the basic concrete structure of each floor, so the shell of the entire building will reach its full height by the end of June. Crockers Chef ’s Table Tring opened its doors on 24 April and welcomed its ﬁ rst guests to a permanent table.

A well-known local cake-maker can now add the title ‘inventor’ to her CV.

After huge success in Potten End, owner and founder Luke Garnsworthy and head chef Scott Barnard have moved their ﬁ ne dining restaurant to larger premises at 74 High St, Tring. ‘The site came up at a great time for us,’ says Luke. ‘Tring is a beautiful town with great community vibes, and I think our dining concept will thrive here. We have an even larger chef ’s table and the space to open a separate bar as well.’ Crockers Chef ’s Table seats up to 15 people for each service, where all the diners sit together and watch Scott, a ﬁ nalist on Masterchef: The Professionals in 2015, complete each dish. There’s a midweek lunch menu, a three-course menu, a tasting menu and a vegetarian tasting menu.

Sherry Hostler, from Tring-based Sherry Hostler Cake Artistry, regularly battled with the problem of how to make the sugarpaste on her cakes appear smooth. Traditionally it’s done using your hands, after running them under cold water, or by wrapping it in cling-fi lm – but neither method is without its fl aws. Sherry said: ‘For years I used those two methods and I always used to think ‘why on earth doesn’t someone invent a smoother for this?’ One day, as I was grappling with hot-hand syndrome yet again, bemoaning the fact that there was no smoother for shaped cakes, I thought ‘hey… why don’t I actually invent one!’’ So Sherry created the Cake Smoothie, which is made in the UK from platinum-cured silicone and looks like a soft, fl exible scraper.

Feeding time at Whipsnade Zoo is a more elegant event with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s launch there of the River Cottage Kitchen and Deli. The food campaigner and celebrity chef has transformed what was the Lookout Café next to the white rhino enclosure. Now it is very stylish, decorated using recycled materials and boasting a fantastic view across the Chilterns. It sits just above the famous white lion, which has itself just had a facelift. At the launch, Hugh said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to share what we believe in. COURT THEATRE LIVES ON

Sing-a-long ﬁlms, live music and fancy dress are all part of the fun in the run up to this year’s Tring carnival.

Saturday is carnival day (12-5pm) and the theme is ‘Tring Beside the Sea’ so think pony rides, ice creams and candy ﬂoss. Acts include the Acrochaps who will be performing seaside themed acrobatics and the Bubbleologists are a bubble-making mermaid show. Other attractions include crazy golf, dog show, dancing groups, fairground rides, German Shepherd agility display, food and drink stalls plus Tring Brewery’s beer tent. This year Tring Together’s stall has a seaside picture postcard photo opportunity! The parade starts from Bishop Wood School at 11.30am, with a procession of local schools in seaside themes, organisations and vintage cars through the High Street, making their way to Pound Meadow.

MODEL RAILWAY EXPO A model railway club is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special exhibition. Tring and District Model Railway Club was founded in June 1978 by a group of local modellers and on June 23 it will be holding a special display put together by the club, its members and friends at Aston Clinton Primary School from 10.30am-3.30pm. The Wildlife Trust which manages Tring Park is launching its 30 Days Wild campaign to encourage people to do something wild everyday throughout June.

Hemel’s MP is backing a campaign to build a new hospital for West Herts.

The scheme is backed by James McVey from rock band The Vamps.

Mike Penning who is tabling a Parliamentary Motion said: ‘We need a new, modern, purpose-built, acute hospital to serve the people of Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Watford. It is a big mistake to focus all efforts on Watford.

James said: ‘Now – that could be going camping somewhere if you’ve never been camping, it could be doing an off-road trail, climbing a massive hill that you’ve always wanted to do but never done – but it could also be something as simple as recycling if you’ve never recycled before or buying a reusable water bottle.’

‘Let’s start again, on a greenﬁeld site, with room to allow for expansion, plenty of free - and level - car parking. It’s a no brainer. BLITZ Take a step back in time and discover how you can get the 40s look

vents with a 40s theme are all the rage at the moment, and over the summer there will be plenty of opportunities to ﬂaunt your 40s look at vintage fairs and themed weekends.

But how do you go about channelling your 40s ﬂair? We asked Emma Treleaven, exhibitions assistant at Bletchley Park Trust. Emma is also a fashion historian with a particular interest in the styles of the decade. She regularly dresses in vintage style and has helped staff at Bletchley Park, home of the wartime coders, to keep their costumes authentic for the various period events held at the park (see panel for details). The wartime era provides the context of this feature.

Make do and mend For a start, suggests Emma, go through your own wardrobe for clothes that can be adapted. ‘You need a straight skirt, nothing with too much fabric. ‘Then ﬁnd a simple collared shirt, and some knitwear. Colour work – a Fairisle patterned jumper for instance – is perfect. ‘This all ties in with the make-do-and-mend ethos of the war. GE straight is what you need – short, ﬁ tted and cropped are late 40s/50s styles!’ Button up the shirt, tuck it into the pencil skirt, add a pair of brogues and you’re good to go! Naomi Glasser, owner of Berkhamsted’s Luminous & Vogue, suggests: ‘Go as a Land Girl. It’s the easy way to go – a short-sleeved shirt, trousers tucked into boots – and you can have a scarf knotted on your head, so you don’t need to worry about elaborate hair!’ While Land Girls wore earthy colours, Emma says you don’t need to be afraid of colour in 40s styles. ‘Most people think the 40s were drab, but I think that’s because all the photos are black and white! But there were all sorts of colours – no neons though – and patriotic red, white and blue were very popular.’ If you’re leaning towards a military uniform, it’s dark blue or khaki skirts with shirts and matching ties, along with ﬂat shoes. For men there are websites such as Soldier of Fortune (www.sofmilitary.co.uk) that sell reproduction uniforms.

Pin curls were really popular too, but you will need to sleep in them and then brush them out the next day. Victory Curls weren’t as popular as you might imagine – they took a lot of work. ‘For make-up, steer clear of cats’ eyes – they are from the 50s. Instead go for fresh-faced and glamorous with the emphasis on lips and eyebrows,’ Emma advises. A little eye shadow and mascara, plus some matte lipstick are the order of the day. Finishing touches should include stockings or tights with seams up the back. Emma recommends cheap Primark ones – or if you want to be really authentic, look out for styles from vintage repro lingerie company What Katy Did, which produces real 100% nylon stockings made on the original 40s machines. ■

HOME &COLONIAL Antiques & Inspiration

On Civvy Street, men wore straight, full trousers, collars, wide ties, trilby and braces. Knitwear was also popular, as were trench coats and wool overcoats. Men should be clean-shaven or wearing a moustache. If you’re shopping for 40s vintage ‘you can very successfully fake it using 70s and early 80s clothes as they had the same silhouettes,’ says Emma.

Hair and make-up The devil’s in the detail, so getting your hair and makeup right can really help to create that authentic look. Head scarves were used a lot to protect the hair. Emma explains: ‘They only washed hair once a week and then it was set, so they used scarves to protect the style.’ Scarves work best with casual clothes. @ LivingMagazines

Method ● Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line the base of a 23cm round spring form cake tin with baking parchment. ● Beat the butter and sugar with the lemon zest until pale and ﬂuffy. Add the eggs one at a time. Then fold in the ﬂour, almonds and baking powder, and the milk and keep mixing until smooth. ● Scrape half the cake batter into the tin and level the surface. ● Scatter over the raspberries and carefully spread over the remaining mix and level the top. ● Bake for 40-50mins until cooked and golden. ● Make the drizzle by quickly mixing the juice and sugars and spoon over the surface of the cake whilst it is still warm. Leave the cake to cool in the tin.

Forget cats and dogs – there’s a new pet in town and it may be coming to a home near you

ou’ve probably never even considered having an alpaca as a pet – and why would you? But there are plenty of people who do, and you’d be surprised how easy the animals are to look after. Closely related to the llama, alpacas come from the Andean high plains of west-central South America, and live at altitudes of around 4,000m. They’ve adapted surprisingly well to life at lower altitudes in the UK. Generally hardy, healthy and relatively easy to keep, they have become popular as pets. They are, however, herd animals and thrive in the company of other alpacas. So you will need

space: as a rule of thumb, an acre of rough grazing pasture supports four or five alpacas. They rarely jump, so net fencing just over a metre high is enough - never use barbed wire. Alpacas live outside most of the time but will need some form of shelter in cold and wet weather. A bonus for alpaca owners is the soft, luxurious fleece. This is one of the main reasons local alpacaowner Pam Sangster keeps them. ‘I knit my own clothes from the fleece of my small herd,’ she says. ‘There’s nothing to compare to the soft, luxurious feel of the clothing.’ If you want to find out more, go to the British Alpaca Society website – www.bas-uk.com. www.livingmags.info

How does bringing a new baby into the family affect your four-legged friend? Local animal behaviour expert Hanne Grice has spent the past few months studying the subject for her MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Training. ‘I’ve spent years working with dogs and cats, and over the years I’ve seen how the arrival of a new baby can affect a pet’s behaviour,’ Hanne says. ‘This is particularly striking in the case of dogs, because they often go from being ‘dog babies’ to being cast out of the family to a certain extent.’ Hanne has conducted extensive research. ‘There is little data about this subject, so I’ve carried out my own questionnaire and am currently collating the results,’ she explains. ‘I’m looking at people who have a dog and then have a baby, and the effects it has, and whether people seek help and advice before the baby arrives, or whether problems arise afterwards. ‘Often, behaviour that was always there – jumping up or eating things or stealing things – can become a problem with the arrival of a baby. Reduced levels of interaction with the dog can also have an enormous impact. @ LivingMagazines

he walk involves a few stiles, all dog-friendly, and a few ﬁelds with livestock. Paths are generally well-marked but may be muddy. The walk passes two Diamond Jubilee memorials, a windmill (2) and an Iron Age hill fort.

With the permission of the landlord you could park at the Full Moon pub (1), along the verge outside, in the small car-park opposite the cricket pavilion (3) where there is a dog bin or along the verge outside Cholesbury Village Hall (4). Walk towards Cholesbury Village Hall (4), noting the two Diamond Jubilee memorials on the Common between the Full Moon and cricket pavilion (3). To the lefthand side of the Village Hall is a gate: go through, following a wide track to the next two gates, keeping the parish church on your left and making for a wooded area straight ahead. There are often horses in these ﬁelds, so keep your dog on a lead. Go through the gate into the wooded area which is Cholesbury Camp (5), a 10-acre Iron Age hill fort within an oval-shaped ditch. Cross the ditch and go straight over on to a well-marked path through more trees. Follow the path through the trees until you reach a gate into a paddock where there are usually 32 | Tring Living

several horses grazing, keep your dog on a lead here until you reach Drayton Wood (6). In Drayton Wood keep left just inside the wood, with fields clearly visible beyond. At first the path is quite open, but the trees close in and the path narrows as it twists around them. The path comes out of the wood to a track crossing left to right (7). Go left down the slope towards a house on the right, into Little Twye Road, and follow it as far as a group of houses on the right where there is a marked path on your left across fields towards Parrott’s Lane (8), which can be muddy. When you reach Parrott’s Lane cross to the very narrow path (9) to the right of Harvest House. This reaches a wooden stile with a dog opening, emerging into a field which often has sheep in it. Head to your right along a well-marked path close to the fence, then through a stile with a dog gate in the hedge (10). Keep right downhill, left of some houses, to a metal gate in another hedge. To your right is the delightfully named Broomstick Lane; straight ahead a wooden fence crosses the main path. Keep right, and before the wooden fence go through another wooden gate in a hedge on to a path in a nursery plantation. www.livingmags.info

This path bends to the left and uphill, eventually reaching the Cholesbury-Buckland Common road opposite Chiltern Motors garage (11). Cross the road and down the track marked Chiltern Heritage Trail. The path slopes down to an intersection of paths at the start of a wooded area (12). Turn left on the path that follows the edge of a ﬁeld. It passes through a metal gate in a hedge into another ﬁeld where there may be livestock. Keep the fence on your left to an intersection of paths and metal gates; go straight on (13) through the metal gate. Follow this path towards some trees, passing through a metal gate and a stile to Ray’s Hill. Cross the road (14) left on to the footpath signposted Chiltern Heritage Trail towards a house. @ LivingMagazines

Keep to the right of the house. When you come to the ﬁrst intersection of paths crossing the one you’re on, carry straight on and at the next path intersection take the left narrow path up a fairly steep slope (15) between trees. This eventually emerges on Cholesbury Lane, opposite Horseblock Lane (16). Turn left back towards the Full Moon and cross the road carefully, on to a path parallel with Cholesbury Lane, or walk along the right-hand side of the road if muddy. You will now see your destination, the Full Moon, which is a dog-friendly pub both inside and out in the garden on a ﬁne day. Note that sandwiches only are served on Mondays. It’s essential to protect your Skin and your hair in the the sun. Here’s our guide on how to stay safe

very day, 42 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the UK – that’s almost 16,000 every year – and the ﬁgure is rising, according to Cancer Research UK. However, almost 86% of those cases are deemed preventable, which means there’s a lot we can do to help ourselves. Unfortunately, with vitamin D a complicating factor, the sun-safe advice has become confusing. We need to get enough sunlight without sun cream to replenish our vitamin D resources, but we must always use sunscreen.

How to strike the balance?

The truth is, a few minutes everyday without sun cream during the UK summer is enough – less if you’re fair skinned, more if you’re darker. The rest of the time, it’s better to protect yourself. With that in mind, we spoke to Dr Dev Shah, consultant dermatologist at One Stop Doctors based in Hemel Hempstead, for an authoritative guide to protecting your skin properly in the sun. 36 | Tring Living

What is melanoma and what causes it?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that arises from the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) found within the upper layers of the skin. Melanocytes are quite fragile cells and are there to protect us from sunlight and prevent UV light causing damage to our cells. If too much UV light is encountered, the melanocytes cannot cope and they are themselves damaged, and develop DNA mutations. Once cells develop irreparable DNA damage, they grow abnormally or in a cancerous way. They can bud off and spread to various organs such as the lungs or brain and ultimately lead to death. The main risk factors for developing melanoma are: ● A very fair skin with light eyes or red hair ● Sunbed use (sunbeds are completely banned in Brazil and Australia) or blistering episodes of sunburn as a child ● High numbers of moles - usually more than 100 on your whole body (count the number of moles on one arm. If you have more than 11, you are likely to have more than 100 on your body) ● A genetic predisposition or family history. www.livingmags.info

HEALTH SUN SAFETY Sun cream: what quality and how often to apply it? We recognise that being outdoors in sunlight has various health benefits (exercise/lower blood pressure), so we want people to keep enjoying the outdoors but to be sensible. When we talk about protecting yourself from the sun, sunscreen is one part of this process. We also recommend wearing long-sleeved and appropriate clothing, using a hat and avoiding the most intense sunlight between 11am and 2pm. When using a sunscreen it’s important to choose a cream with an SPF of 30 or more with a five-star UVA rating, or a symbol with UVA written within a circle. Sunscreen comes in many different forms. If you want to look less shiny there are non-glossy matt creams, while for a more moisturising suncream you should go for oils. The main mistake people make is the frequency of application. Terms such as ‘24hr protection’ and ‘all day long protection’ are misleading. If you’re in direct sunlight, you should be reapplying your sunscreen every one to two hours. If you’re exercising and sweating or swimming you should be reapplying it every half an hour. Aim to cover your whole body so that the skin feels ‘tacky’; if you don’t put enough on don’t worry too much - if you’re applying it frequently you’ll eventually cover all of your skin. When using a sunscreen you must consider it as a ‘sieve’. In other words it’s not a ‘block’, it’s more a filter that still allows light through to the skin. Using

a sunscreen doesn’t mean you can stay out in direct sunlight for an infinite amount of time.

Do all clothes protect you from the sun or are some better than others? If you hold your clothes up to the sun and you can see light coming through, they are definitely not protective. Thicker clothing is far better than thin clothing. All clothing will offer some level of protection, but this will be variable so sunscreen should still be applied. You can buy clothing with an SPF factor and this is often the best type of clothing to fully protect your skin. Children especially need full-body suits with hats that have an SPF 50 rating when in intense direct sunlight, or swimming, in order to protect their skin as they are unlikely to achieve full protection with sunscreen alone.

In general we would recommend wearing longsleeved loose clothing and trying to avoid the most intense periods of sunlight between the hours of 11am and 2pm.

Is there a safe way to tan?

In a word, no. Unfortunately tanning means sun damage, which may increase your risk of developing further skin cancer. It is also important to note that tanning and sun exposure is the leading cause of premature ageing of the skin. @ LivingMagazines

HEALTH SUN SAFETY The safest way to get a darker complexion and skin tone is to use a spray-on tan. When you’ve achieved the colour you want with a spray-on tan, you should still use a high factor sunblock in direct sunlight.

What changes should you be aware of in your skin, and what should you do if you’re at all worried?

First, we recommend that people at least look at their skin regularly. It’s important that people know what their bodies look like at baseline. Look at your back and buttocks, checking every nook and cranny so you know what you’re starting off with – or get your partner to help. This way, if you develop new moles (or if moles are changing) you’ll know because you knew what they looked like before.

We also recommend that people take photographs of their bodies at baseline. Then they can refer back to these photos every three to four months, specifically looking out for new or changing moles.

There are some great apps that can help you keep track of changes in your skin – but be aware of apps that claim to diagnose melanoma as we feel there is not enough evidence of safety surrounding these. Instead, try one of the apps where you can document and encrypt images of your body to take to your doctor or dermatologist to show them changes in your skin. They can then understand the changes, should there be any. ■

Protect your hair & scalp Hair Hair becomes dry and brittle in the sunshine, and if it’s bleached or dyed the problem is compounded. But you don’t want to slop a load of greasy stuff on your hair when you’ve spent ages styling it: ● Wear a hat. Each year, the National Gardens Scheme sees a host of privately owned gardens open to the public to raise money for charity. And it’s not restricted to large, landscaped affairs – cottage gardens and unpretentious plots participate too

here’s nothing more inspiring, for anyone with an interest in gardening, than taking a walk around other people’s gardens. And the beauty of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) is that it gives us the chance to look at what can be done in ‘ordinary’ gardens. While there are some impressively large plots that the public can visit, it’s also a chance to see smaller, privately-owned gardens that don’t usually open to the public, giving us some great ideas about what to do with our own gardens. The NGS not only gives garden enthusiasts a chance to have a nosy around otherwise private gardens, it also does a great job raising funds for a number of

very worthy charities. Last year, its 90th anniversary, it donated £3m to charities including MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and the National Autistic Society to name just a few. You might think your home is sparkling – but how clean is it really? Clare Swatman spoke to local experts to get the low-down on how to make your home spotless

es, we know you like to keep your house clean(ish). But kids with muddy shoes, dogs with muddy paws, and life’s general wear and tear mean that it’s hard to keep on top of it. But even if your loo gleams or your ﬂoor looks as though you could eat your dinner off it, is it really as squeaky clean as it could be? We asked local experts for their views. We hope you’re not easily shocked.

In the Kitchen The kitchen is a place you need to keep spick and span for reasons of hygiene – especially if you regularly prepare meat and ﬁsh.

Floors

Be honest, how often do you clean your ﬂoors? Once a day? Once a month? You need to make sure you mop them at least once a week. Use warm or cold water rather than boiling to make sure the antibac agent in your cleaning product is still effective.

Bins

Just think of all the ﬂuid that gathers at the bottom of your bin – ugh! It’s not just at the bottom, either, but round the rim too, which means it’s very easy to transfer bacteria to your hands. Clean thoroughly with antibacterial cleaner every week, inside and out.

Tea towels/cloths

These are a breeding ground for bacteria, which will then transfer to your dishes. Change them every day. Cloths you use to wipe the @ LivingMagazines

Sponges

Bacteria thrive on heat and moisture, so sponges are the perfect breeding ground. Disinfect and leave it to dry after every use to kill the bacteria, and replace them once a week minimum.

In the Bathroom

pets I wouldn’t have a business,”’ says David Green, who runs Berkhamsted Carpet Cleaning. ‘Most of my regular customers have carpets and sofas cleaned every 12 to 24 months depending whether or not they have children.’ And it’s not just about the germs. ‘Carpet pile that contains a lot of dirt and grit will get damaged by the constant grinding at the fibres when it’s walked on,’ David adds. ‘A hot-water deep extraction clean will wash out anything not reached by the vacuum cleaner. It’s also a good idea to have a shoes-off policy.

Bathrooms aren’t the cleanest places in the world. But as long as you don’t clean your loo with your toothbrush you should be OK, right?

‘With wool and cotton... it’s a good idea to apply an effective stain protection such as Scotchguard.’

Towels

Curtains attract dust and smells. You can wash them at home but it’s best to get them cleaned professionally every six months to keep them clean and fresh.

Diane Gisbourne, who runs the Quality Ironing and Dry Cleaning Service covering Berkhamsted, Tring and Hemel Hempstead, says: ‘Remember, towels don’t just remove water. When you dry yourself they also remove dead skin cells which collect in the towel fibres. When they’re wet they’re the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and germs. ‘Towels need time to dry to prevent bacteria breeding, which causes mould and mildew, so make sure you hang them up after every use, and wash them after every five uses.’

Loo

The loo needs a thorough clean once a week, and a wipe with bleach and antibacterial spray every couple of days. The brush will need cleaning regularly too – pour bleach into your toilet bowl and stand it in there for an hour.

In the Living room

Sofas and carpets

There’s no hard and fast rule about how often sofas and carpets should be cleaned, but the more the better to keep nasties and bacteria at bay. ‘I often hear myself saying “if it wasn’t for children and 48 | Tring Living

In the Bedroom Sheets

You might not want to think about it, but your bed sheets will be full of sweat, bacteria and human skin cells – a perfect breeding ground for dust mites and their faeces. Ugh. Change them once a week, minimum, and wash at 60°C. When you get up in the morning, pull your covers back and give the mattress time to air, and open the window to release moisture.

Pillows and duvets are full of dust mites, skin cells and bacteria, however clean they look. ‘Duvets and pillows should be washed at least every two to three months,’ says Diane Gisbourne. ‘If your pillows aren’t regularly cleaned almost a third of their weight can be in dust mites, dead skin cells and bug droppings – yuck! ‘Air them regularly and have them professionally cleaned every few months. They can be washed in a washing machine but remember they’re much heavier when wet. ‘Drying duvets and pillows in the sunlight will kill micro-organisms. Restaurant 23 Only open a year, Restaurant 23 on Tring High Street already feels part of the town. It specialises in fish but also offers plenty for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. We were greeted by a smart and friendly member of staff and taken to our table upstairs in one of three intimate, cosy rooms. It had the feel of a private dining room, with a fireplace and comfy upholstered chairs. The carpeted floors and low background music promoted good conversation across the table. I was impressed straightaway when we were offered a carafe of tap water. The menu reinforced that first impression: there was the standard menu as well as specials, and we decided to try something from each. I went for the pea soup, followed by the megrim sole and chocolate ganache, while my wife opted for the grilled Cornish mackerel, the ‘due’ of pork and the ganache again. The mackerel was delicious and totally bonefree (as the waiter had promised); the flesh was soft and it wasn’t at all oily. The mango on the side was a nice touch. My soup was a gorgeous deep green and full of flavour, and the accompanying bread was divine.

Sheila’s pork was beautifully presented and served with perfectly cooked al dente asparagus. My sole, with a delicious parmesan crust, came with spinach and fondant potato. The rich chocolate ganache was perfectly complemented by a sharp orange and Campari sorbet – very moreish! We drank an excellent New Zealand sauvignon blanc that went well with the food and was very reasonably priced. Sheila has already booked again, and I plan to take friends there next month – we really were impressed. R23 makes an excellent addition to the choice of eateries in both Berkhamsted and Tring.
