Accessories can really make an outfit, and handbags are no exception. For some, they are an important part of the look, for others, an after-thought or simply a vessel to haul life’s essentials around (unless the dress has pockets!).

I’ve never been one for having the latest ‘IT’ bag or spending the equivalent of a deposit on a small flat for a statement piece. But I do love a good quality bag, that can be practical as well as stylish. Here are my picks to show how you can get style for a steal!

Splurge – The Birkin Bag – from Sotheby’s – £17346

This icon of a handbag was first designed in 1984 when the CEO of Hermes met the actress Jane Birkin on an aeroplane. Apparently, she sketched out the style she liked on a sick bag (classy!) and thus, The Birkin was born!

To get your hands on one of these, you’ll have to be a regular Hermes customer, or find a pre-loved version, like this tan version available at Sotheby’s for the bargain price of £17346 – but the good news is shipping is complimentary!

Save – The Chelsea Bag – from TotesLuxe – £150

Splurge – Silver Leather Tote – from Brix + Bailey – £169

Metallics are a key trend this Spring/Summer 24. If you’re not sure about wearing metallic clothing, a handbag is the ideal way to update your look. This soft leather tote is by brother and sister brand, Brix + Bailey.

Save – Silver Leather Tote – by River Island – £45

I love this version from the high street – it’s real leather making it a great buy for just £45. Plus, it comes in three other shiny shades - gold (great for those with warm colouring), metallic black, and on-trend green.

Splurge – Crossbody Denim Blue bag – by Elie Beaumont – £89

This crossbody style with interchangeable straps has become a go-to for many women. it’s the practicality that wins – hands-free is a winner when shopping or dealing with kids and dogs etc. They are big enough without being too massive, and you can inject creativity and change the look to suit your outfit by mixing up the straps.
