FELPHAM EMERGENCY RESILIENCE GROUP (FERG): COVID RESPONSE

As we move into 2023, I thought it appropriate to reflect on the fantastic community response of our volunteers since March 2020.

Stepping up; offering help and support; being a friendly voice at the end of the phone or a cheery smile on the doorstep, FERG’s fantastic band of volunteers have delivered more than 8,000 prescriptions and answered many calls for assistance. An astonishing figure!

FERG has now stood down its formal COVID response. Having said that, urgent and covid related calls for assistance will not be ignored and where able we are still ready to respond if called upon.

I, and Councillor Gloria Moss, want to express our deepest and most sincere thanks to all those who offer their help.

Their caring and compassionate approach, responding at any time in any conditions, has been amazing.

Thank you all so much.

Dave Smart, Chair Felpham Parish Council.

Who are we?

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF FERG AND WHAT WE DO:

• Residents who care about our people and community. Volunteers who are willing to help when a major situation arises that has the potential to cause injury or harm to numerous residents or property.

What do we do it?

• Support the principal responding agencies, including the emergency services, local councils, and other agencies.

• Provide local knowledge, identifying those in greatest need, and acting as a vital link between residents and the emergency services.

• Provide support.

Some examples of how we help.

• Door knocking, giving emergency advice, advising and supporting evacuation, responding in severe weather, providing or coordinating transport, helping and manning closed roads (with Police), providing welfare and support, assisting with medical needs…. the list could go on.

• Formed and funded under the umbrella of the Parish Council, but independent in our operation, we have a range of equipment which supports our role. Much of our training is carried out “in house” and covers a variety of needs, including safety, incident response, risk assessments and first aid. Some training is provided by our colleagues from the West Sussex County Council Resilience Team, and we work closely with them in much of what we do.

For more information about the group or if you wish to join us please contact the Clerk of the Council.

We look forward to continuing our work for Felpham residents throughout 2023.
