My husband Joel finally went on a dog-show-trip with me to Michigan. He was shocked to find that some hotels let

you bring dogs, without the need for a buggy to sneak them in—not that I’ve ever done that. Joel had a good time and

actually came to the show one of the days. The other two days Joel decided dog shows are not a good enough reason to wake up early and the dogs that weren’t showing probably wanted

to sleep late as well. The cold temperature outside was also a contributing factor.

Speaking of cold, it sure has been frigid here. As I write,

the temperature is 1°F. It is hard to convince the dogs to go

outside; I’ve been bribing them with cookies. Time for a show circuit in the South.

I’m looking forward to the 2011 show year. It looks to be a

busier year than the last. Hope to see you around!

Editorial Office W207N17295 Parkview Drive Jackson, WI 53037 262-674-1311 www.btcac2c.com Colophon The Coast to Coast is produced with the Adobe Creative Suite on Macintosh computers. Body text is set in Adobe Caslon Pro and Myriad Pro. Adobe Caslon is based on the type designs of William Caslon, circa 1725. These in turn had been influenced by the Dutch types of the late seventeenth century. Although old style in nature they have less stress than some of the earlier faces of the genre. The Adobe Caslon font family was based on specimen pages printed by Caslon between 1734 and 1770. Myriad was designed by Carol Twombly and Robert Slimbach in 1992. The display faces are Fling and Kursivschrift. Fling is a fanciful typeface was designed by resident Letraset designer Michael Gills and is based on the famous French Ronde script. Created entirely on screen, Fling has a precise, clinical appearance. The capitals are for initialling purposes only and support a lowercase that is rich in alternative and ligatured letterforms. Also included is a host of attractive embellishment devices. Kursivschrift is by designer German Cartographic Design and published by Linotype. The Coast to Coast is printed at Port Publications in Port Washington, WI.

President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 1:03 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Peggy Jackson, Linda Jett, Sharon Stoll, Dick Wiest, and Carolyn Gastley. Absent was Richard Nix. Both Lynda Bradley and Maureen Blackwood joined the group via conference call. Fletcher began the meeting with discussion of the new recently adopted AKC policy of charging judges fees, based on the number of dogs being judged by them. Kelly stated that the Delegates have no vote or influence in this new push for out-of-pocket fees for judges. It was thought to encourage membership and those on Show Boston lists to write opposition letters to AKC on this new practice. The increase in judge fees will only create more costs for clubs and therefore the exhibitor. Fletcher will present this topic at the Annual meeting and the information can also be posted on the website. Treasurer’s Report – Nix was not present, yet submitted his Annual report to LaJoye. Annual auditing of the finances will take place the beginning of July with the books closing June 30th. Jett offered to accept dues from members while attending the National and LaJoye is in possession of the checkbook to write any checks if necessary. Recording Secretary – Motion made by Fletcher to approve the April 20, 2010 Special Meeting Minutes as corrected, seconded by Stoll. Motion approved unanimously. AKC Delegate Report – Kelly informed the group of the Atlanta Delegate meeting taking place in 2-3 weeks. She will try and attend, yet stated no business is pending specifically relating to Boston Terriers. New Business Top Boston of the Year – All Board members recently received a proposal from Janet Horner suggesting a revision to the Boston Terrier of

the Year Competition. The proposal states: “that dogs/bitches that have won the competition and have been named Boston Terrier of the Year, should therefore be ineligible to compete in the event. This is an extra non-regular event that is conducted during the national specialty week. It should be a fun event for the members who should be able to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the evening without the overlay of an excessively competitive atmosphere. While recognizing that it is of course a competition, the competitiveness can be reduced by not having past winners of this event again compete for the title. Further, once having won the event, there is no valid reason why such a dog/bitch needs to win the event again. Finally, this event should be a onetime only event for the winner and needs to be set apart from regular competition. Each year there will be a different winner entered into the history books and each year’s Boston Terrier of the Year will therefore remain undefeated in this special competition.” There was some discussion as to whether or not the Boston Terrier of the Year committee was involved in this proposal. The Board’s contention was that this should be a Board decision. Bradley offered that other dog clubs prohibit winners from competing in subsequent years. Fletcher made a motion that the Board adopt this proposal as stated, beginning with the 2011 Specialty, with the added stipulation that the same dog owner may enter but not with the same dog/bitch if this dog or bitch has won in the past. LaJoye seconded this motion. Jackson called for a roll call vote: Fletcher – yes, Bradley – yes, LaJoye – yes, Blackwood – no, Jackson – no, Jett – yes, Stoll – yes, Gastley – yes, Wiestyes. Motion approved 7-2. Agility/OB/Rally Show Chair replacement – Gastley reminded the Board of the need for a new Performance chair to replace her for 2011. It was suggested to possibly split the chairs with two individuals comprising the role Gastley currently holds. The chair (s) will be a member (s) of the BTCA.

Gastley asked those who would be present at the trial to also be on the performance committee, since five people are required to be on this committee and present at the show at all times. Without five members offering to be on the Performance committee, the trial cannot take place. A motion was made to have two Performance chairs – one for Agility and one for Obedience/Rally. Seconded by Jackson, and passed unanimously. Gastley will present this new approach in having two chairs and also ask for volunteers at the Annual meeting. National show – LaJoye stated that he is still in review of a proposal to have the National based at one location. Discussion on the logistics of travel and conflicts with the National verses Host club. LaJoye would also like an Assistant Show Chair for the Reno National who will act as an understudy, and to then take over his role in 2012. LaJoye will ask for volunteers interested in serving as the Assistant Show Chair next year, with the goal to take over the role completely 2012. He will take names provided under advisement and will discuss with the Board at a later meeting. There was some discontent with the April 17 date chosen for the 2011 National in Reno, as it conflicts with an Affiliate club’s specialty back east. Due to distance, it makes attending both nearly impossible, yet there are date restraints to be considered. Further information on the Affiliate club’s option to be discussed in the future. Performance Certificates – Gastley presented how Sue Herber sends performance certificates/awards to members and non-members of the BTCA, total-

ing approximately 396 titles. It was felt the practice of sending awards to nonmembers should be discontinued but a Congratulatory letter and application to the BTCA should be sent to the recipient instead. Motion made by Jett to only send performance awards/certificates to members of the BTCA, and to send a congratulation letter and a BTCA application to non-members, seconded by Jackson. Motion passed unanimously. Rescue Chair Reimbursement – Discussion on the payment of dues for Kim Pennington, Rescue Chair by Jackson. The Board was in agreement that $50 a month should be allotted to the Rescue Chair for expenses. Jackson reimbursed $400 to Pennington for her expenses, from telephone bills to veterinary care she paid for such as a portion of spay/ neuter, first round of shots, and heartworm testing. Motion by Jett to reimburse Jackson $400 for telephone and other expenses ($50 a month for 8 months) she paid Pennington for work with Rescue for Boston Terriers. Gastley seconded, motion carried unanimously. Jackson as the liaison will work with Pennington in finding a replacement, and also inquire how many Boston Terriers the committee has rescued. New Business – Fletcher presented a proposal on behalf of Carl Gomes relative to selection of judges for our National Shows. This new process would begin in 2014 replacing the process currently in effect. (Harry Smith is scheduled for 2012 and Ken Roux for 2013). Requirements: The judge must have completed all provisional assignments in the breed. There shall be a minimum of five years from the date of the American Kennel Club letter

granting regular status and the show date. The judge must demonstrate (if a breed judge) at least 15 years’ involvement in the breed as a breeder, handler, or exhibitor. Restrictions: No judge shall adjudicate at a National Specialty within five years of the last assignment. For example, a judge in 2010 cannot be on the ballot until 2014 to judge in 2015. The name of any Officer or Board member must not appear on the ballot to judge the National Specialty during their tenure. Method of Voting The Board shall appoint a Judges Selection committee which shall be comprised of three members. One member should be a multi-breed judge and the other two, one breeder judge and one recognized breeder/exhibitor. The Selection Committee will only be going three years out in judges selection (i.e. 2014 thru 2016). This Selection Committee will select three all-breed judges (all-breed judges that have put up Bostons in the group rings) and three breed judges; the names will be in alphabetical order; ballot prepared and mailed to all members in good standing (by the Recording Secretary). This shall be done by February 15th of the next year i.e. 2013. Membership shall be instructed to select 2 breed judges and 1 all-breed judge (no write-ins on ballot) and forward to an accounting firm selected to tabulate the results by March 31st of the same year. Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Fletcher then made a motion for the Board to accept this new Judges Selection Proposal as outlined. Seconded by Gastley. Jackson called for a rollcall vote. Fletcher – yes; Bradley – yes; Wiest – yes; LaJoye – yes; Blackwood – yes: Jackson – no; Jett – yes; Stoll – yes; Gastley – yes. Motion passed.

12/15/10 11:10:48 AM

Approved BOARD Minutes Fletcher also shared Carl Gomes’ interest in having this Judges Selection Committee comprised of Carl Gomes – Chair and multi-breed judge; Janet Harner – recognized breeder/exhibitor and Joyce Fletcher – breeder judge. This was followed by Fletcher’s motion to select these three people (Carl Gomes, Janet Harner & Joyce Fletcher), per Carl Gomes’ recommendation, as the Judges’ Selection committee. Seconded by Stoll. Motion approved unanimously. Pedigree’s Red Boston advertisement – LaJoye made a motion for him to generate a letter to Pedigree dog food company, explaining the red colored Boston used in advertisements and banners, is not an accepted color of the Boston Terrier standard and to ask its discontinued usage. Jett seconded, motion approved unanimously. Board relationship with Committee operations –. Kelly brought her thoughts that the BTCA committee chairs are selected members who need to be reinforced for the valuable work they contribute to the club. Moving forward with new members on the Board, she urged the group to have a more trusting management style and give the committees more autonomy. While under the Board’s discretion, committee members should feel supported in their decisions, as negativity will create a downward spiral of enthusiasm and participation. Jett thought to spread volunteers between no more than four committees and accept more “Indians than chiefs”. It was felt committee chairs should not be members of the Board. Liaisons also need to be utilized more for the relaying of information between committees and the Board.

This discussion was tabled until input could be received by the new Board who will take office July 1st. Annual Meeting Agenda - The 2010 election results should be read first by McCollough, followed by Carl Gomes’ proposal. LaJoye will discuss the need for an assistant Show Chair in 2011, with the idea the person will take over the role completely for the 2012 show. Gastley will request similar volunteers for the split chair of Agility and Obedience/Rally. Fletcher will read/ request approval for the 2009 General membership minutes, in Bradley’s absence. LaJoye will state how he will compose and send a letter to Pedigree regarding their use of the red Boston in their advertisements, and the letter will be posted on the website. New members will be asked to stand and recognized. The subject on the develop.m.ent of a “members only” section on the BTCA website, without serving as a chat room or brag area, will also be proposed. Its purpose would be to discuss club business, and a moderator would need to be selected to ensure quality and integrity of the site. National Show site - LaJoye started conversation regarding a permanent National show site location, explaining the Olympia Spa and Resort in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin has all performance equip.m.ent on the grounds and is located 40 miles outside Milwaukee. The downside is the lack of a close airport and travel time to the facility. Another location to be considered is Purina Farms, who has a plan to build a hotel on the grounds fall of this year, since currently a shuttle bus must be used between hotels and the grounds. Blackwood stated the location is currently

hosting other dog breed Nationals, and the AKC Museum is close by and could be an attraction for exhibitors. The disadvantage of having a single site for the National would be the lack of travel to different parts of the country for the membership. C2C – Discussion on the status of the C2C as a newsletter or magazine. The current dilemma is mailing costs for the C2C to the membership using the monies currently collected. One idea was having the magazine pay more for itself, as input on this subject will be needed from Brook Berth, the current editor of the C2C. Jett offered that selling advertisements could possibly be an answer rather than raising membership dues. Limiting the usage of the front cover would be necessary. Blackwood cited current fees for advertising in the Boston Quarterly for comparison. The C2C could also be sent to members via e-mail. Fletcher proposed a committee comprised of Jackson, LaJoye, Nix, Berth, and Fletcher to monitor and discuss the progress of the C2C. The Board will present this at the Annual meeting - asking the membership for ideas of defraying the costs to pay for the C2C - besides increasing membership dues. Input is also needed from Berth, since she has been instrumental in bringing the magazine to such a high level of quality with the kind of positive response from the membership. The next meeting will be on July 27th. A motion was made to suspend the meeting until after the Annual Meeting. Meeting adjourned at 4:14 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:05 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Dick Wiest, Peggy Jackson, Linda Jett, Sharon Stoll, and Carolyn Gastley. The Annual Board Meeting of May 16, 2010 is reconvened to discuss unfinished business. New Member Applications – LaJoye e-mailed 46 biographies relative to potential new members. He asked the Board for questions or comments and there were none. Each Board member is to mark the ballot and mail back to LaJoye. 2008 National Breed Trophy – At the 2008 National held in Milwaukee, WI, we were approached by the Best of Breed winner that she did not receive the bronze Boston Terrier sculpture as promised for BOB. The person who pledged the trophy did not follow through. Both the 2008 Show Chair and Trophy Chair made arrangements to offer another prize. There was further discussion relative to the 2008 BOB winner receiving a similar prize and what options there were regarding the person who pledged the bronze trophy. Jackson made a motion for LaJoye to send a letter to the 2008 BOB winner stating that prizes won and retained for BOB need to be returned and at that time would then receive the equivalent of the prize given for BOB at the Atlanta National. Fletcher seconded, motion passed unanimously. Both Kelly and Jackson felt a certified letter should be sent to the 2008 trophy sponsor addressing this issue of not providing the trophy. Support of Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome research study– Kelly presented a research study compiled by the National Institute of Health from Washington, not requesting a monetary donation, but an endorsement for this study from the BTCA. This study is already

supported by the breed clubs of Pekinese, Pugs, and Bulldogs. By providing an endorsement, the BTCA is stating it feels this type of research is valuable and the results might provide answers to the current health issue. Kelly had e-mailed attachments of the study and while some Board members did not receive the e-mail, all were in support of this study. Kelly advocated that eventually a gene might be isolated from these types of studies and blood samples requested in the future. Gastley made a motion for the BTCA to endorse the “Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome” study by NIH. Seconded by Nix, motion carried unanimously. Mailing of Election Results – Discussion on the mailing of 2010 Election results to meet the thirty day requirement of informing membership, as stated in the bylaws. Typically published in the C2C, the magazine will not be ready to mail by June 19th (thirty days after the results were announced at the Annual Meeting). Also, not all members have Internet access to the club website and posting on the internet is not stipulated in the Constitution as a method of publication of election results. A decision was made by the Board not to include the individual tallies of votes on this mailing, but the numbers will be included in the Draft Annual Meeting minutes published in the C2C. Nix made a motion for Bradley to send the 2010 BTCA election results to the membership via postal mail on club letterhead, seconded by Jackson. Motion carried unanimously. The next meeting will be on July 27, 2010. A motion was made to adjourn Jett; seconded by Fletcher. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

Pat McCann seconded the motion. Majority approved the motion.

Committee Reports – July 1, 2009 thru June 30, 2010 – McCollough asked if there were any questions regarding the committee reports. There were no questions from the floor. New Business Selection of Judges Process – Carl Gomes presented to the membership a new process for selection of judges for our National Specialty which was approved by the Board at their Annual Board Meeting on May 16, 2010. This new procedure will supersede the current procedure beginning 2014. (Harry Smith is scheduled for 2012 and Ken Roux in 2013). Requirements: The judge must have completed all provisional assignments in the breed. tThere shall be a minimum of five years from the date of the American Kennel Club letter granting regular status and the show date. The judge must demonstrate (if a breed judge) at least 15 years involvement in the breed as a breeder, handler, or exhibitor. Restrictions: No judges shall adjudicate at a National Specialty within five years of the last assignment. For example – a judge in 2010 cannot be on the ballot until 2014 to judge in 2015. The name of any officer or any board member must not appear on the ballot to judge the National Specialty during their tenure. Method of Voting – the Board shall appoint a Judges Selection committee which shall be comprised of three members. One member should be a multi-breed judge and the other two , one breeder judge and one recognized breeder/exhibitor. The Selection Committee will select three all-breed judges (all-breed judges that have put up Bostons in the group rings) and three breed judges; the names will be in alphabetical order; ballot prepared and mailed to all members in good standing (mailed by the Recording Secretary). This shall be done by February 15th of the next year i.e. 2013. Membership shall be instructed to select two (2) breed judges and one (1) all-breed judge (no write-ins on ballot) and forwarded to an accounting firm selected to tabulate the results by

March 31st of the same year/ Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Selection of judges for the National will be for three years at a time. Judges Selection Committee - Carl Gomes further shared with the membership that the Board approved his recommendation (at the Board Meeting held on May 16, 2010) that this committee be comprised of Carl Gomes (Chair), Joyce Fletcher and Janet Harner. The membership is encouraged to submit suggestions for proposed judges to the Judges Selection Committee. Show Chair 2011 - Dane LaJoye reported that he will remain as Show Chair for 2011 only and asked for a volunteer to work with Dane as Assistant Show Chair for 2011 who would be willing to take over as Show Chair for the next two years (2012 and 2013). The members were asked to contact the Board if they wish to volunteer for this position. Performance Chair - Carolyn Gastley announced that she is retiring as performance chair and that in future years, the BTCA Board has agreed that we will have an Agility chair and Obedience/Rally Chair. Carolyn explained she has put together a job description for this position. She further explained that for agility, we have to have five BTCA members who are willing to work the agility trial. Coast to Coast Publication – Marby Kelly recognized Brook Berth for doing an outstanding job with the C2C publication. She further explained that in order for the BTCA to continue to produce this quality publication, we need

members to consider some options such as raising dues, selling ads, delivering the C2C via e-mail. These comments prompted a very lengthy discussion and debate on whether the C2C is a newsletter or magazine; is charging for ads the right thing to do and how much; where would ads be placed; cost of publication; what about foreign members, etc. At one point, a motion was made by Deana Jones to raise BTCA dues to cover the cost of sending mailing the C2C lst class and the Board would make the final decision; Ellen Kennedy seconded this motion. There was a call for a show of hands vote. The motion failed by a count of 30 yes and 54 no. There was also a motion to postpone any action on this topic until the next meeting; this motion was seconded and then defeated. An extensive discussion then followed relative to selling and placing ads in the C2C. A motion was made by Chad Howard that the BTCA sell ads for the C2C except for the front cover; seconded by Marie Stolitca. This motion carrier by a vote of 64 yes with 19 no. Jane Cole made a motion that the following special place-

ment ads will have to pay a higher price and these would include inside front cover, inside back cover, ½ page back cover and any special placement ads. Don VanAvery seconded. Motion carrier 53 to 12. Alison Allison made a motion that the Board C2C Committee create the prices for the ads; seconded by Joyce Fletcher. Motion carried unanimously. Breed Standard Change – Carl Gomes made a motion that there should be a change in the Color Section only of the breed standard which would be as follows: “Disqualifications: Eyes blue in color or any trace of blue; Dudley nose; Docked tail; Solid black, solid brindle or solid seal without required markings; Add: And all other colors are a disqualification; delete: Gray and Live colors.. Motion was seconded by Fred Comstock. Motion carrier unanimously. The Board will act on this motion as quickly as possible. Meeting adjourned at 11:07 p.m. EST. Respectfully submitted, Joyce Fletcher VP - BTCA

A discussion was held for the role of the Rescue chair and how the Affiliate clubs are essentially the means by which rescue is handled. A national organization does not handle actual rescues, but possibly could act as a point of contact (similar to breeder referral) that would provide Affiliate Club names and/or their rescue person in the appropriate region of the U.S. for information for coordination. The Rescue Chair will now act as the Rescue Referral and will also be listed as such with the AKC. In regards to the monies that have been set aside for Rescue, the various club contacts could solicit the BTCA for emergency grants of funding for treatment and/or surgery of rescue Boston Terriers. Comstock offered how guidelines would need to be set and the Board would review each instance on a case by case basis. Comstock made a motion that the Rescue chair would advise the Affiliate club’s rescue person to contact the Board with requests for veterinary treatment, and the Board would review each instance on a case by case basis. Seconded by Jett. Motion passed unanimously. LaJoye made a motion to have Cindy Pagurski fill the role of Rescue Referral, seconded by Berth; motion passed unanimously. Fletcher suggested two new committees to be created: the Electronic

Board

Board (Kim Pennington resigned) Ola Jeanne McCollough

Jamie Allen

Communications Committee and a Policies & Procedures Committee. The first committee would deal directly with communications with the club such as a Members Only section on the website, chat board, or Yahoo group list; and investigate the pros and cons for the club and what are the club’s potential liabilities if any. Fletcher thought Georgann Mathis and Fred Comstock should head up this committee and Allen also volunteered to a part as well. Fletcher made a motion to create and Electronics Communications Committee comprised of co-chairs Mathis and Comstock, with Allen functioning as liaison. Seconded by Bradley. Motion passed unanimously. The second committee would be the creation of a Policies/Procedures Committee with Comstock and Fletcher as co-chairs reporting directly to the Board. The purpose of this committee would be to review BTCA minutes as far back as possible and any other references to select which should be listed in a policy book with a reference quoted. This committee is not creating policy but gathering past data for a continued reference point for the BTCA. This would eventually be posted on the website and updated similar to what the AKC has done. Motion made by Fletcher to create

the Policies/Procedures Committee comprised of co-chairs Comstock and Fletcher and reporting directly to the Board; seconded by Blackwood; motion approved unanimously. Dues Increase – According to the Constitution and Bylaws, Nix felt that the dues increase needs to be set by the Board of Directors, not mandated by the membership. He feels that the C2C is more of a magazine than a newsletter and the club is spending too much money on this project. Kelly reminded the Board of the membership’s feedback regarding the C2C- they love the publication and want to keep it as is. So much so, when the financial challenges were shared, the membership offered to increase dues as an avenue to help offset costs. Allen agreed with this assessment, and Comstock supported the idea that the members expressed a willingness to increase dues and the Board has an obligation to the membership and should listen to their wishes. It was stated that the $10 increase next July 2011, will make the club dues comparable to most other National clubs. Nix made a motion to have the dues stay the same, but to approve an increase for those International members. The motion was not seconded and failed. Berth made a motion for the BTCA to

Approved BOARD Minutes increase membership dues $10 as of July 2011 and a $20 increase/surcharge (to assist with postage) on those individual members who live outside the U.S. LaJoye seconded. Motion passed with Nix in dissent. Membership Roster – One membership Roster needs to be maintained, and according the Bylaws, the Recording Secretary is responsible for its upkeep. Nix offered that at the end of September when most dues are received with address changes, he will send Bradley his Roster to compare and update. Allen offered to assist with the transition. Bradley will also forward Affiliate club membership lists to Fletcher, who will then send to the new Affiliate club chair. Show Report 2010 – LaJoye reported that overall the show was successful, and was the second largest total entry the club has ever hosted. Nix reported the total earnings were $42,814.34 minus expenses of $27,642.47, which provides for a profit of $14,863.67. LaJoye reminded the Board that the large number of entries compensated for the relatively high cost of expenses, and this might be something to watch in future years. Futurity, Top Boston, and good locations are thought to have contributed to its large success. New Members – LaJoye has sent the Board ballots for pending membership applications and is waiting for Board’s responses for approval. All proposed have submitted checks which have been forwarded to Nix, and have signed the Code of Ethics. Futurity Challenge Fund – Blackwood presented a request from the Futurity committee, for the BTCA to purchase

a CD in order for it to gain interest, since it is stated that the winner of the Futurity splits its interest as a prize. Another alternative is to open a separate Challenge Fund Savings account, so it can be added to when receiving donations, rather than have the locked CD account. Nix expressed reluctance in opening another account for so little return, yet it was stated in the rules of Futurity to include the interest made would be a portion of the award. Since the stated rules need to be followed, LaJoye made a motion to have Nix speak with Wanda Goodson to see if using a CD or Savings account will have tax consequences before deciding on opening another account. Seconded by Jett, motion passed unanimously. Nix left the meeting at 10:00 p.m. (EST). New Business 2011 Sweeps Judge – LaJoye announced that he does not have a Sweeps judge selected for next years National, and asked for suggestion. Fletcher made a motion to invite Deana Jones to be the Sweepstakes Judge for the BTCA 2011 National, Comstock seconded. Allen was not comfortable with only having this selection. Roll call vote was requested: Fletcher – yes, Bradley – no, LaJoye – yes, Blackwood – no, Allen – no, Berth – no, Jett – no, Comstock – yes. Motion defeated 3-5. LaJoye made a motion to have Peggy Golden be the Sweepstakes judge for the BTCA National in 2011. Seconded by Fletcher, passed unanimously. Motion by LaJoye to have Dottie Truman act as an alternate if Golden

does not accept the Sweepstakes invitation, seconded by Allen. Motion passed unanimously. 2011 Assistant Show Chair – LaJoye informed the Board that he has an individual who is willing to be his Assistant Show Chair next year. Short discussion by the Board and then LaJoye made a motion to have Carol Upthegrove from Florida act as the Assistant Show chair for 2011 with the possibility of taking over the role of Show Chair for 2012. Seconded by Jett, passed unanimously. 2011 National Update – A site survey will take place at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV on September 15-16, 2010 by LaJoye. Motion made by Comstock to reimburse LaJoye for airfare, as the hotel will compensate the room and he will pay for his own meals. Seconded by Blackwood, motion approved unanimously. And Agility chair still has not been found, and LaJoye offered that a person can be hired to perform this function at the show if needed. But there still needs to be five people who need to commit to being present at the trial in its entirety. There is also a suggestion of holding two runs at the show. 2012 National Location – To date, there have been no interested responses regarding a club offering to host the 2012 National. Previously discussed, holding the National in a central location might be an option to investigate. One suggestion again was the Olympia Spa and Resort in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, which has all performance equip.m.ent on the grounds and is located 40 miles outside continued on page 31

Vice President – Fletcher requested a correction to the May 16, 2010 minutes under Performance Certificates, as it was understood and noted Sue Herber mailed awards to non-members. It was felt this practice should be discontinued and only a Congratulatory letter and application to the BTCA should be sent to the recipient instead. For clarification, Herber contacted the Board via letter and stated she never mailed performance awards to non-members but only an application and congratulations letter on behalf of the BTCA. The Board was in agreement to note this correction. Moving forward, the Board will make improved efforts to clarify statements made by others by speaking to or receiving information directly from those parties involved. Recording Secretary – Motion made by Fletcher to approve the July 27, 2010 meeting minutes as written, seconded by Comstock. Motion approved unanimously. Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye informed the Board that with Berth’s assistance, the BTCA banner was ordered and will be mailed to Carl Gomes for the October event in New York. When finished, the banner will be mailed back to LaJoye for storage and can be requested for use if needed. Treasurer’s Report – Nix reported as of August 31, 2010 : BT of the Year - $ -11.61, Futurity -

$1,645.06, General Funds - $54,453.44, Health - $20,910.24, Perpetual Trophy - $5,931.98, Rescue - $5,897.25 = for a total of $88,826.36 in the BTCA account. LaJoye offered that he has been in contact with the hotel in Atlanta who needs to send a check to the BTCA for approximately $1600. The check should arrive within 1-2 weeks and was for the deposit originally submitted by the club. AKC Delegate Report – Kelly reported she attended the September Delegate meeting in New Jersey. Her main impression from the meeting was the AKC stressing their dire need to encourage the increase in registrations, as the funds from both litter and puppy registrations support and maintain the many various AKC programs. Emphasis was placed on educating members to increase these crucial registrations to maintain the current level of breed support and programs the organization currently offers. Kelly also mentioned the push for a group realignment is growing again within AKC. Fletcher asked Kelly to inquire regarding a new rule effective July 1st, which would allow a Bred-by class entry to be shown by someone other than the owner. To date, Fletcher has received conflicting information regarding this rule. Kelly also shared she received a special acknowledgement for her 25 years of service as an AKC Delegate. Unfinished Business Progress Report for 2011 National Specialty Dane performed a site survey at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV September 15-16, 2010, and reported the amazing facility will be more than able to host the club and has a very capable and dog friendly staff. The hotel is waiving it’s pet deposit and RV parking will be affordable and accessible. The host club will have two specialty shows on Monday and Tuesday mornings, and the BTCA is having two agility runs as well. There will be a seminar by Ken Roux on Tuesday eve

ning. Providing handouts with illustrations and using live dogs to point out characteristics, Roux will discuss the breed standard in regards to evaluating puppies. Roux will not charge the club for his 1 _ - 2 hour presentation and the club will charge the membership a nominal fee to attend. Past attendees to the seminar had very positive feedback. Other activities planned are a “50’s Sock Hop” dance and possibly the same theme for exhibitors during the Monday show. Wednesday will include Carl Gomes’ popular Judges Education seminar, Sweepstakes, Futurity, the Top Boston Competition in the evening and a BTCA hosted dance party. Thursday, Regular Classes will be held and the Annual Meeting in the evening. Friday will have the Best of Breed competition with the Banquet scheduled later that night. In addition, there will be a special surprise guest at the Banquet who will be performing for the attendees. LaJoye would like to hold a free Microchip clinic, using the Grand Prize of twenty five microchips and scanner he won at the AKC Parent Club Conference earlier this year. The only order of business pending regarding the National is LaJoye needs to confirm the Performance judges. There will be two photographers for conformation and performance, and Kelly will be the show secretary. New Business Nominations/ Appointment of Nominating Committee – A nominating committee needed to be selected and McCollough suggested Fletcher be the chair, and for her to select two other members to assist with

the process. Fletcher offered Peg Golden of Arizona and Margaret Noble of New York serve on the committee with her. The Board took suggestions for the two alternates to serve if needed, only one member on the committee can be a Board member, and agreed with both Jason Luciano from Massachusetts and Melany Anaya from California. 2012 National Location – Allen reported to the Board outcomes of her contacts with several eligible Affiliate clubs within the selected U.S. Region, when she inquired as to their interest of hosting the 2012 BTCA National. One of Allen’s concerns was many of those she spoke with were not BTCA members and recommended all liaisons should have membership. Some contact information was not correct, making communications difficult at times. Allen notes that a few of the clubs were smaller in size in regards to membership, did not feel capable of hosting a National, were not unified in spirit, or felt they would need more time to raise the funding required. When asked by Kelly which club she would recommend based on her interviews, Allen stated that she felt the Greater Houston Boston Terrier club would be the best able to host the BTCA National. The club is in a favorable location, has a strong bank account, larger membership, and has experience hosting in the past. Allen will discuss this appointment to host with the Houston club and LaJoye to forward the Host Club Responsibilities document packet to Marcia Terry. Allen to also investigate hotels which could accommodate this event and report feedback at the January meeting. Previously, the hotel used

for the 2005 National worked well and Allen knows of several others that have hosted dog shows successfully. AKC Parent Club Conference LaJoye attended the AKC Parent club conference August 20th in Raleigh, N.C. whose message was the same as presented at the AKC Delegate meeting, to encourage the increase of registrations to assist with funding programs. LaJoye shared that he attended a valuable workshop on holding a National show and a seminar with other Parent club officers, who reported similar challenges and goals within their clubs. Better communication between membership and Board officers was among the most commons areas of desired improvement, along with many clubs stating membership numbers are down and/or they either lost money or broke even on their National. Overall, LaJoye felt the BTCA stood better than many clubs in regards to issues and obstacles being faced today. Quarterly Meetings Policy - LaJoye reiterated to the Board, the voted upon and approved policy to hold Board meetings on a quarterly basis (once every three months) with the exception of any special topic that needs discussion, wherein a Special meeting could then be held. Therefore, the next meeting should be towards the end of January 2011 and every effort should be made to adhere to this agreed upon schedule. New Members – LaJoye has sent ballots to the Board for 16 pending membership applications and is waiting for the Board’s responses for approval. All sponsors supporting the proposed applicants are BTCA members and

Approved BOARD Minutes have signed the Code of Ethics, which LaJoye has on file. Allen questioned the current membership process in regards to the standards used to determine membership eligibility, so the process is fair and impartial. She advocated the develop.m.ent of a policy on what the qualifications for membership might be. It was answered that the completion of an application, signing of Code of Ethics, and garnering of two sponsors is the basic method by which decisions for membership are made by the Board. Trust needs to be shown towards the reliability of the sponsors and since voting is performed by secret ballot according to the Bylaws, totally removing impartiality might be impossible. Kelly offered how in the beginnings of the club expansion, people were encouraged to join the BTCA from all over the U.S., and for the Board to pass ultimate judgment is not in keeping with the spirit of the club as it was conceived. Dane offered

that potential members also sign a Code of Ethics, and if not adhered to, can be removed from membership. It was also shared that deciding on what measures to use to determine membership eligibility could be difficult. Allen offered to create policy/standards to use for membership applications and submit to Comstock for comments. Other – Fletcher spoke with Sue Herber, who may have to pay approximately $200 for a printout she requires to comprise the list of those eligible for performance certificates and awards. Fletcher wanted to ask the Board to reimburse her for this expense, yet LaJoye stated he spoke to Janet Harner about six months ago, and she receives this report for free. At the time, it was understood that Harner would share information contained on the list with Herber. Fletcher to contact Harner to inquire if she is still receiving the list from AKC,

listing performance standings, and then will contact Herber. Further action on reimbursement for Herber tabled until after more information is gathered. Nix left the meeting at 9:42 p.m. (EST). The next scheduled meeting will be a Special Board meeting on October 19, 2010 to discuss the Futurity Challenge Fund with regards to opening a separate CD or Savings account and the handling of its finances. The results of the Breed Standard change ballot will also be discussed. The next regular scheduled meeting will take place Tuesday, January 25, 2011. A motion was made by Stoll to adjourn, seconded by Bradley. Meeting adjourned at 9:52 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

continued from page 27

Milwaukee. The alternate location of Purina Farms, was felt is not ready to host the National as it still needs to build a hotel on the grounds. Allen warned that having one central location should skew the AKC point scale for major wins and inquired which Region would be next eligible to host. LaJoye to confirm that the states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana are eligible and Allen to contact Affiliate clubs to ask of their interest to host the National. Lifetime Membership – Fletcher proposed that Bob and Elle Candland be recommended for Lifetime Membership at the next annual meeting. This can take with the recommendation

of the Board and 20 years of membership. This couple still travels to show and breed occasionally. Fletcher made a motion for the Candland’s to be recommended for Lifetime membership at next years Annual Meeting. Seconded by Comstock, motion passed unanimously. Challenge Trophy Replacement – Fletcher made a motion to replace the Challenge Trophy for Winner’s Dog won by Sarah Kennedy, with another trophy in memory of Hazel Steele. Seconded by Comstock. Motion passed unanimously. Banner for BTCA – LaJoye informed the Board that the BTCA does not own a club banner which could be displayed

at Meet the Breed events (Carl Gomes could use it in October in New York) and at the National. The estimated cost would be approximately $400-500, yet Berth offered to create the banner for the cost of the materials. Comstock made a motion to have the club purchase a banner for no more than $500. Bradley seconded, motion passed unanimously. The next scheduled meeting will take place Tuesday, September 21, 2010. A motion was made by Jett to adjourn, seconded by LaJoye. Meeting adjourned at 10:47 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

Agility STAR! Chopper qualified in both his Standard and Jumpers runs at the 2010 National, completing his Novice Standard title. He took care of loose ends with one additional trial to complete his Novice JWW title. A little more practice on those evil weaves and we’re heading for Open! Yippee!

Obedience STAR! Skootchy’s first trial was at the 2010 National where she was High Scoring Novice Dog and earned her first CD leg. She quickly wrapped up her CD in one weekend at an all breed trial with two more class placements (another first and a third!) Now it’s on to Open Obedience and Agility!

“MBISS CH Katbird’s Brilliant Constellation”

As president of the Oklahoma City Boston Terrier Club, we wish to congratulate Kathryn Graves and “MBISS CH Katbird’s Brilliant Constellation” (Connor) on your wonderful achievement in winning The Boston of the Year Award at the 2010 National Specialty this year. I co-own a Connor daughter whose name is “CH You Can Call Me Constance At RJL” (Connie). After finishing Connie’s Championship last year we bred her this Spring to our CH CP’s Kick It Up A Notch (Kicker). There were two babies born of this union. Pamela S. Bale

Boston terrier of the Year Magnificent Evening Event story and photography by Patricia Johnson

There were 19 entered for the flamboyant show. Kaitlyn Allison opened the lavish event with a song from the musical, Beauty & the Beast, “Home”. (Picture 5495) A future professional singer and Junior Boston handler at the age of fourteen. To make sure everyone had fun Gwenn Weyandt and Connie McCord were the bartenders. (Pictures of them in back of bar.) Lights camera’s flashing and spot lights shined, on each competitor as the owners showed their dog, one by one to their favorite theme song. At such an important event four different judges were selected by drawing names from these categories: Breeder Judge, Professional Handler, AKC All Breed Judge and a Boston Breeder Judge who has been breeding over 10 years. The judges were Clare Lodenstein, Carl Gomes, Sue Kennedy and Maria del Rocio Nadal. Until that night no one knew who was picked. The winner of the 2010 “Boston Terrier of the Year” was CH. Katbird’s Brillant Constellation: owner/handler/breeder: Kathryn T. Graves. The interesting thing about a week of showing “The Best of the Best” at the National Specialty Shows, also including The Metropolitan Washington Boston Terrier Club, each day a different Best of Breed Boston won. This say’s a lot about our breed. So many good dogs to choose from and many that didn’t win proved to be a winner by representing our standard. For more coverage of the National events, see and read the next Boston Quarterly.

Oklahoma City Boston Terrier Club ResulTs The Oklahoma City Boston Terrier Club, Inc. combined celebrations for the 4th of July and our beloved Bostons in a BIG way this year by holding both Independent and Designated Specialties during the Oklahoma City Summer Classic Dog Shows held June 30 through July 4th , which included 4 days of Major Boston Entries. There was food, fun and gifts for everyone. Dr. Tina Neel and her Staff prepared lovely and useful gift bags to be given exhibitors for BOTH Specialties. The Club reserved grooming space where exhibitors could get their dogs ready to show, relax, and partake of the cake, cookies and sandwich fare provided by Club Members. Lovely trophies were offered during both Specialties. Four gift baskets were raffled off that contained everything for Boston’s and their people from wine to crate pads to grooming supplies and of course, lots of Boston-themed goodies.. The Club sponsored a “Meet the Breed” Booth on Saturday, July 3rd. Everyone attending the All Breed Show that day enjoyed seeing AKC’s “American Gentlemen Among Dogs” celebrating our Country’s birthday with our Club’s “Parade of Patriotic Bostons” as members and friends promenaded around the showsite with their Bostons decked out in their finest RED, WHITE AND BLUE costumes! I want to thank everyone who made these Specialties, well… SPECIAL! Veterinarian Dr. Tina Neel for preparing our gift bags. Sweepstakes Judges Mrs. Beth Lachnitt and Ms. Jan Sigler and Regular Judges Mr. Charles Olvis and Mrs. Michele Billings who gave such careful consideration to each and every exhibitor. The people behind the Mid-Del Tinker Kennel Club and Oklahoma City Kennel Club and OKC Summer Classic for welcoming us into their awesome cluster of shows. Photographer Pete Melia for his usual outstanding photography and of course, all of the Officers and Members of the

Oklahoma City Boston Terrier Club who’s hard work and dedication made this a truly memorable weekend. THANK YOU ALL – Michelle Carter, Show Chairman
