Top 10 Reasons to Visit The reasons to make your way to Montgomery are many and varied, but since we can’t possibly list them all, here are some of the very best.

It’s Alabama’s Capital City

It’s the Heart of Southern Hospitality

Tour one of the country’s loveliest, and most historic, capitol buildings, and check out the very first state archives department in the country at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

Enjoy the warm welcome and friendly smiles of Montgomery’s genuine people. Manners matter here, so get ready to hear plenty of “thank you,” “ma’am” and “please.”

It’s Home to World-Changing Events Montgomery was the cradle of the Confederacy and, a century later, the impetus of the Civil Rights Movement. Sites like the First White House of the Confederacy, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Rosa Parks Library and Museum and the Civil Rights Memorial and Center honor this rich heritage.

It’s Dishing Out Authentic Cuisine Whether you’re hungry for some Southern-fried favorites or craving more upscale culinary creations, Montgomery’s many restaurants can satisfy any appetite.

It’s Got Great Shopping & Antiques From stylish independent boutiques, eclectic gift and art offerings and antique shops to national retailers, Montgomery has an extensive array of shopping options.

It’s So Easy to Get Here Montgomery is centrally located in the Southeast, conveniently situated at the intersection of Interstates 65 and 85.

It’s Buzzing With A Brand New Riverfront Entertainment District Pick up the pace with the excitement of The Alley, the city’s new entertainment district, right across from the Montgomery Convention Center.

It’s Got You Covered The city boasts more than 7,000 hotel rooms, a host of unique meeting venues and a state-of-the-art Convention Center.

It’s Filled With Arts and Culture With arts institutions ranging from the world-renowned Alabama Shakespeare Festival to two ballet companies, the capital city encourages creative expression of all forms. And places like the Hank Williams Museum celebrate and preserve elements of our culture that are unique to Montgomery.

It’s Family Friendly The entire family will have a ball (and maybe learn a bit too!) exploring Old Alabama Town and the Montgomery Zoo or just rolling down the Alabama River aboard the Harriott II Riverboat.

When in Montgomery... Do As the Locals Do Some friendly capital city citizens share the faces, places and things they love in their hometown so you can enjoy them too.

What do you love about the Montgomery Zoo?

What’s so cool about downtown?

“I love to watch the monkeys swing and play. I like how they tease each other. But my favorite animals are the otters. They are so cute with their big, brown eyes.”

“Downtown is ‘so cool’ because life has returned 24/7. Whether you want fine dining, a park setting, entertainment, boat rides or just a place to call home, downtown Montgomery now gives residents and visitors an area that has something for everyone.”

—Megan Parker, age 9

What’s your favorite thing in Montgomery?

What’s your favorite Montgomery attraction? My favorite thing to do is spend time with my wife Terrie and son Kolby enjoying our many local attractions. We recently enjoyed the play “Nacirema Society” featuring Jasmine Guy at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. We also like sporting events including Alabama State University football games and Biscuits baseball games. The best thing about Montgomery is the diversity of our local restaurants ranging from fine Southern cuisine to seafood and my son’s favorite: hibachi-style cooking!” —Willie Durham with State Farm Insurance

“I think that all of the family activities are the best part of Montgomery. Going to watch the Biscuits play baseball and going to the Zoo are great. Having so much history in our city is fun too.”

How’s the local art scene in Montgomery?

—Tucker Little, age 13

Where’s a great spot for some “retail therapy?”

Who serves up the best breakfast in town? “Chappy’s Deli on Perry Hill Road. I love their eggs and pancakes.” —Tom Sexton, president at Pickwick Antiques 8

—Jeff Downes, Chief of Staff/Deputy Mayor for the City of Montgomery

“I like the atmosphere in Old Cloverdale. It has a unique blend of history and beautiful scenery along with one-of-akind shops. It’s a great shopping destination for both locals and visitors.” —Valerie Pittman, owner of The Look Boutique

What’s your favorite thing to do in Montgomery? “I love going to the Exchange Bar at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery and eating outside at night. It has a great atmosphere.” —Sandra Arrington, nurse at Baptist Medical Center South Hospital

“We have an amazing variety of galleries that display and sell a wide array of art—from photography and watercolors to sculptures and works from selftaught artists. There’s also a generous spirit of cooperation and encouragement that permeates the artistic community. Here, the arts seem to completely overshadow racial and cultural differences…that’s something we can build a better city and better world with.” —Local artist Mark Dauber of The Dauber Gallery downtown

Take a Taste ofHMontgomery All of our area restaurants invite you to drop by and sample their creations. But, the multitude of choices can be daunting, so check out these popular eateries sharing the secrets of their “signature dishes.”

Chris’ Hot Dogs For a bite of quintessential Montgomery and a mouthful of history, grab a few napkins and get your hands around a hot dog from Chris’ Hot Dogs on Dexter Avenue downtown. This legendary diner marked by the green-and-white-striped awning opened on May 1, 1917. It’s now being run by the second and third generations of its founding family. You can get a tasty hamburger here, but the signature dish is a Hot Dog “All the Way,” a wiener drenched in Chris’ secret sauce, sautéed onions and kraut. The sauce has always been loved by locals—country-music crooner Hank Williams used to eat at the counter and write songs—but folks around the globe seek out the tangy, spicy condiment too. The sauce has been shipped as far away as Alaska, Germany and Australia. Downtown

Nancy’s Italian Ice Indulge your sweet tooth with a cool treat from Nancy’s Italian Ice. Choose from 12 to 20 diverse flavors of ice (the most popular are strawberry-lemon and mango), as well as gelato, soft-serve ice cream, cookies and cupcakes. Have the best of both worlds with Nancy’s Italian Ice’s signature dish, the Fancy Nancy. This palate-pleasing pleasure has tiers of Italian ice layered with tiers of ice cream.

Ham and High

La Jolla

Sinclair’s

Located in Hampstead, Montgomery’s new sustainable community off Taylor Road in East Montgomery, this restaurant’s menu focuses on seasonal, fresh, local cuisine with slight Southern influences. Ham and High offers only the freshest meat and produce sourced from local farmers and artisans or on-site at Hampstead Farms. In keeping with this “farm to table” philosophy, Ham and High’s signature dish is its Charcuterie Board, a daily selection of housecured, aged or smoked meats including a variety of sausages, salami, paté and other items paired with accompaniments like pickled vegetables and homemade sauces and relishes.

Find upscale, fine dining and stellar service at La Jolla, located in the Shoppes at EastChase. Executive chef Todd Batey has made it his mission to offer the best food in the city, and the restaurant’s signature dish goes a long way towards realizing that goal. The Braised Short Ribs are slow-roasted for six hours for melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and then served over potato gnocchi and topped with a veal demi-glaze and fried onions. It’s all finished with a wedge of Stilton blue cheese.

This neighborhood favorite is welcoming, warm and as full of charm as it is flavor. Its moderately priced menu offers soups, crisp salads, heaping helpings of pasta, juicy steaks and more, but the signature dish at Sinclair’s is the Tomato Seafood Stack. Succulent shrimp, tender scallops and lump crab meat are paired with fresh tomatoes baked in a perfectly seasoned parmesan crust and finished with a delicate white wine cream sauce. Enjoy this delight at one of two Sinclair’s locations in the city: in the heart of Old Cloverdale or in East Montgomery on Vaughn Road.

Mr. G’s

Blue Heron

Dreamland BBQ

Mr. G’s is known for the friendly service and consistent presence of its owner, Montgomery County Commissioner, Dimitri Polizos. He can often be found making his way around the dining room, smiling and greeting customers, and even helping them decide what to order. While the menu is large and tempts you with offerings like lasagna, Greek salad, moussaka and pizza, Mr. G’s signature dish, the chicken souvlaki, cannot be overlooked.

Gourmet Southern specialties dominate the menu at this charming, family friendly eatery in the Waters neighborhood, but its Bueno Burger, a fresh beef patty from Meyer Ranch in Alabama topped with a fried egg, chorizo, caramelized onions, pickled onion slivers, lettuce and tomato, is the winner of the signature dish title. Pair the dish with a drink choice from the restaurant’s selection of moderately priced wines and beers.

End your quest for the perfect ‘cue at Dreamland BBQ downtown, famous for its succulent ribs and delicious sauce. Feel free to “pig out” on some pork, but save a little room for dessert since Dreamland’s signature dish is its Banana Pudding, made fresh daily with all the right stuff—vanilla wafers, ripe bananas, fluffy whipped cream and creamy pudding—plus a secret ingredient that puts it over the top. Dreamland also offers the largest draft beer selection in central Alabama and has outside dining. Downtown

The Tipping Point Also in Hampstead in East Montgomery, The Tipping Point has something for everyone. This casual restaurant, coffee shop and bar has a playful and affordable menu inspired by some of America’s coolest cities. It also offers Intelligentsia coffee and teas, and a great selection of specialty beers and wines-by-the-glass, plus weekly live music and events. Order The Tipping Point’s signature dish, the Chicago Dog, an all-beef dog loaded with American cheese, kraut, peppers and mustard.

History Walk Back in Time When the strife of the Civil War was boiling to a breaking point, Montgomery was in the middle of the fray as the first capital of the Confederate States of America. Fast-forward about 100 years, and a courageous capital city citizen named Rosa Parks motivated the mobilization of the Civil Rights Movement. Before the war, after the Movement and in all the years between, Montgomery has been the site of countless historic moments and events.

Built in 1851, Alabama’s State Capitol Building is one of the only state capitols designated a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest capitol buildings in the country. Catch some live music, mix and mingle, watch the big game or just kick back with a cold one at any one of the city’s many nightlife options.

Drink It All In

Don’t miss three of Montgomery’s most happening spots: The Exchange Bar at

the Renaissance Hotel & Spa, AlleyBar in The Alley Entertainment District downtown and La Jolla in East Montgomery. Relax in the spacious covered outdoor area and sip a tasty Bellringer at the Exchange Bar. In the 1800s, Freeney’s Bell Tavern occupied the corner where the Renaissance now sits. Today, a replica of Freeney’s Bell hangs at the Exchange Bar and chimes daily at 5p.m. signaling the end of the workday. At AlleyBar, the action heats up when you get cold. Don a faux fur coat (in a situation-appropriate “alley cat” print) and enter the city’s only frozen shot room, where your drink is served in a shot glass made of ice. At La Jolla, ask for the French Martini, a sophisticated blend of vodka, raspberry liquor and pineapple juice topped with champagne.
