SUNDAY 8 MARCH 2020
UNDER 13 AND UNDER 11 BOYS
SUNDAY 8 MARCH 2020
For more than three decades the Berkhamsted Sevens has provided enjoyment and competition for numerous young players and their teams. I am very pleased to wish all competing this year a memorable event, playing alongside friends. The level of competition is always impressive and the tournament continues to be a success because the organisers give it a great deal of time and effort and match officials taking charge of matches ensure it is a great experience for those competing. I would like to thank all involved for continuing in this endeavour, and promoting rugby and the sport’s values. I was fortunate, having begun my rugby in school, to go on to captain my club, Leicester Tigers, to play for and captain England and to tour with the British and Irish Lions.
I am very aware that without the coaches who encouraged me in the early days this would not have happened, so I would like to thank all the coaches and managers of the teams competing for their support of player development and Berkhamsted for continuing to host this excellent tournament. I hope that everyone involved enjoys their rugby at this year’s sevens tournament and for many years to come.
Peter Wheeler, President RFU
Principal’s Message Welcome to Berkhamsted for our U13 Boys Competition and the U11 Festival. I hope all 64 teams enjoy a day of competitive, sporting, enjoyable Sevens – and that the weather does nothing to interrupt it. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors, supporters, and all those who have helped to organize today’s event (particularly Graham Burchnall, whose tireless work is at the centre of it). Thanks, too, to referees, first aid teams, those helping with catering, car parking and all the other elements which might go unnoticed because they work so smoothly, but all of which are vital to the day’s success. Have a great day! Richard P Backhouse, MA
Richard Backhouse, James Rodwell - Old Berkhamstedian (England & GB Sevens) and Alex Goode (Saracens) at the opening of the new pitch Chesham Road Playing Fields September 2018.

Welcome from Berkhamsted School The U13 Boys Competition is now in its 30th year and we will see 48 teams taking part today and since the Berkhamsted 7s started in 1989, 152 different schools have competed. This year, we will once again follow the guidelines set down by the RFU. The U11 Boys Festival will see 16 schools competing and I would like to thank Anthony Gillam for organising and running the day.
I would like to welcome all staff, players, referees and spectators to our annual 7-a-side event and hope that you will enjoy a day of exciting rugby.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the continued financial support from Berkhamsted School, sponsorship from local companies, and once again, special thanks must go to Aramark under the leadership of Mr Martin White, our catering company, for their immense contribution.
I would like to wish all the teams taking part the best of luck and thank you once again, for all your commitment, enthusiasm and friendship. Organising this day of rugby for the past 30 years has been an absolute privilege because I have always had such a wonderful team to help me.
We must also thank Schoolblazer for their huge contribution in sponsoring the referees kit and supplying a kit bag for every team competing and to TackleBag for providing the match balls. Our gratitude must also go to Chris Grimsdale, Nick Saunders and Julian Anthony for all their input with the sponsorship for the day.
Wishing you all a memorable day.
The School would like to thank Jen Hallesy for designing the programme and poster. Special thanks too, must go to Joanne Sammars and Sarah Brown in the Marketing Dept for all their input for the day. Lastly to Pat Hayball for all the administration work over the years.
The matches have always been played in the spirit of good sportsmanship and friendly rivalry. A special welcome this year goes to several schools who will be competing for the first time in both the U11 Festival and U13 Competition.

Berkhamsted Rugby
Rugby is the major sport played during the Michaelmas term. The senior school is able to field up to 14 rugby teams at the weekend (1st XV – 4th XV, U16 A-C, U15 A-D and U14 A-D) and boasts a strong fixture card against the likes of Harrow, Eton, Stamford, Felsted, Abingdon, RGS High Wycombe, and Dulwich. The U15 squad enters the National Schools Cup and the U18 squad the Champions Trophy, with the 1st XV squad of 2018 reaching the quarter final and going out to eventual winners Wellington. It is an exciting and successful time for Berkhamsted Rugby with the 2014 1st XV recording the first unbeaten season since 1957 and the 2015 side losing just once. The 2018 squad finished 10th in the Daily Mail rankings, the highest ever by a Berkhamsted side. Provision for training has recently been upgraded with a purposebuilt gym on the Castle campus and two full-time Strength and Conditioning coaches to oversee all training programmes. Home games are played at Chesham Road Playing Field with 2016 marking the opening of the new David Case Pavilion and changing rooms, and 2018 the completion of the pitch development. The junior rugby programme runs during the Lent term with A,B and C teams representing the school at U13 and U12 level during Saturday and Wednesday fixtures. The junior fixture card includes junior blocks against some of the best independent, grammar and state schools in the area. Berkhamsted Rugby teams regularly tour overseas with recent trips to South Africa (2010, 2018), Spain and France (2016), Argentina/Chile (2014), Biarritz (2007), Argentina (2006) and New Zealand (2001) being highly successful.
Berkhamsted Representation Berkhamsted Rugby players are regularly selected for county and representative squads and have also recently represented The Independent School Lambs at national level. This season Jack Chapples, Jack Hussey, Zahran Obozuwa, Jack Wood have all been selected. Harvey Graham is currently in the South-East England squad and trialling for the England Counties side. Toby Knight has been selected for the England U18 final training squad after an impressive season for the Saracens U18 Academy. We are delighted that Toby has been offered a professional contract with Saracens for the 2020-21 season. Berkhamsted is a partner school with the Saracens Academy and a number of boys are members of their U18 and U16 squads with Jasper Sorrell and Ollie Owen playing alongside Toby Knight in the U18s. Casper Jack, Luca Fahy, Charles Keith, Oliver Webb, Cameron Raubenheimer, Will Stanford and Joe Pannese are all in the U16s. Others are also involved with Wasps from U13-U18 level. The school helps manage their school sporting commitments with their academy training programmes. There have also been recent rugby successes amongst the Old Berkhamstedians with James Rodwell (England & GB Sevens) now the most capped Sevens player of all time. Will Fraser (Saracens) recently retiring prematurely after battling injuries but with a glittering record including the Premiership and European Cup trophies and Tom ffitch spending a season with the England Sevens academy.

In 1989 the late Mr George Pitman, the former Headmaster of Berkhamsted Junior School suggested that it should celebrate its centenary by hosting a Rugby Sevens Tournament. Seven teams were invited to participate: Beechwood Park, Bedford Modern, Habersdashers’ Aske’s, St George’s Harpenden,Verulam, Oakham and St John’s Northwood. Bedford Modern were the inaugural winners of the Berkhamsted Sevens. In 1992 the Plate trophy was introduced and was won by Watford Grammar. In 1993 twelve teams competed with Berkhamsted School winning the Tournament. RGS High Wycombe then dominated the competition for the next three years; their teams were blessed with skill, pace and power. In 1997, London Oratory stopped the Wycombe domination before we saw the emergence of some extremely talented Whitgift sides. In 2001, a most generous gift from a parent enabled the tournament to expand to 32 teams. This was the year when the country experienced the infamous outbreak of foot and mouth disease which made the day a very
difficult one, but we somehow got through it. The team effort on that day was quite extraordinary. In 2002 the tournament moved to 40 teams and the family of Tom Warren (Captain of the 1st XV) kindly donated the Bowl Trophy so the visiting schools had three trophies to play for. In 2003 we welcomed the first team from Wales, Dwr-y-Felin from Neath; they have been coming ever since. Their friendship has been so very much appreciated over the years. 2004 saw the U13 Tournament increase to 48 teams and marked the introduction of the U18 Girls Tournament. This was also the year we welcomed St Joseph du Loquidy from Nantes for the first time who brought their U13 Boys and U18 girls over the channel. We had to cancel in 2005 due to frozen pitches. This was most unfortunate because St Joseph du Loquidy had a team capable of lifting the U13 Tournament Trophy.
The Judd School produced some fine teams during this era and their winning team of 2007 was a most formidable side. The Girls Tournament continued to go from strength to strength and soon became the largest tournament in the country; involving 24 teams. The first team to lift the U13 trophy from the North of England was The Manchester Grammar School in 2008. In 2010, the decision was made to increase the Tournament to 64 teams at U13 level and therefore another trophy could be awarded and the Old Berkhamstedians kindly donated the Shield trophy. Glantaf won this and were the first side from the Principality to win a final at the Berkhamsted Sevens. 2012 and 2013 saw Warwick lift the Tournament Trophy and John Fisher ended their run in 2014. In 2015, Whitgift were the winners of the Tournament Trophy. It was a marvellous moment to see the Plate, Bowl and Shield trophies being lifted by Preseli, Greenhill and Glantaf all from Wales. In 2015 we took the difficult decision to stop hosting the U18 Girls Competition as Berkhamsted Girls were no longer playing rugby.
The U13 Tournament was not held in 2016 because of the building of the David Case Pavilion. 2017 saw the introduction of the U13 Waterfall Competition as directed by the RFU with 64 teams being hosted on the day with a record number of teams from Wales. Furthermore, 2017 saw the emergence of an U11 Festival with 16 sides taking part. It was with great regret that we had to cancel in 2019 because of high winds but it was certainly the right decision. So here we are in 2020, the 30th Anniversary of the Berkhamsted Sevens. We have 48 teams at U13 level and 16 teams in the U11 Festival. Since 1989 including those competing today, approximately 19,500 boys would have taken part at U13 and U11 and over 2000 girls competed at U18 level. Over the years it has been marvellous to know that the boys and girls who have run out on the fields of Berkhamsted have gone on to play at Premiership level and on the International stage.
