LETTER U nless yo u we re livi n g i n a cave , n o o n e co uld e scap e I ggy Azal ea ’ s , Fan cy, last year. But, I as k you, what i s g r eat fo od and g reat mus i c wi tho u t a f rost y br ew to was h i t all d own ? Over the past couple of years, our July issue has been all about the outdoors. From fishing, hiking and camping to personal watercraft, extreme off-road and skydiving! If it’s adventure you seek in East Texas, we’ve done our best to bring it to you! But this year, I think the collective vibe in the office is just a little more laid back. With the rain clouds gone and the summer sun turning our shoulders pink, we find ourselves wanting to slow things down a bit, to simply savor the sights, sounds and smells of summer. Often, the things we enjoy most about summer don’t come on a boat or found while ziplining across the wide open sky. They come from the grills in our backyards and the tunes spilling out the roofs of our cars. I mean, every summer is blessed or cursed (depending on your taste in music) with a summer song. Unless you were living in a cave, no one could escape Iggy Azalea’s, "Fancy", last year. But, I ask you, what is great food and great music without a frosty brew to wash it all down? That’s right! This month, we bring you the "other side of summer", Beers, Bands and Barbecue! We have hunted all over East Texas to find the absolute, most mouth-watering barbecue around. We’ve listened to albums, CD demos and countless YOUtube playlists to find all the East Texas bands that are shaking things up. We’ve testtasted so many delicious beers it’s been quite the wonderful dilemma narrowing them down for you.

LETTER A good pair of sunnies just seem to fIt better. No more painful nose pieces or arms that feel like they are holding on to your face for dear life. I have never considered myself a fashionforward person and have always thought it a bit ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of sunglasses. The $10 pairs I purchased were just fine and it didn't matter if I lost them, scratched them or even sat on them. They were cheap and could easily be replaced. However, my sisters have been splurging on name brand shades for years. About 5 years ago, I was visiting my oldest sister when she noticed a tiny scratch on the lens of her brand new Fendi's. It was my lucky day, at that moment, I got my very first pair of expensive sunglasses ... for FREE! Suddenly it all became clear and I have not been able wear a cheap pair since. A good pair of "sunnies" just seem to fit better. No more painful nose pieces or arms that feel like they are holding on to your face for dear life. Not to mention, they last longer. Like anything in life, you get what you pay for. And trust me, you are far less likely to sit on a pair of Chanels!

With so many outdoor activities one can experience this summer, protecting your eyes is a must! Whether you choose to take an adventure at one of the best hiking places in Texas, enjoy the summer weather with a picnic lunch, ride bikes around your neighborhood or plan to catch a patio show with the sweet tunes of some local bands, sunglasses are a necessity! This time of year is meant to be outdoors making memories with friends and family and there are more than enough things to keep you entertained all summer long. The problem, for me now, isn't the investment of a new pair of sunglasses, it is not knowing which ones will look best on me. I know I am not the only one facing this dilemma because rarely do you see someone buying a new pair of glasses, in general, that doesn't have their "honest" friend by their side to tell them what looks good and what doesn't. This is why our editorin-chic, Veronica Terres, turned to some expert's for help in solving this #firstworldproblem! There are trends and there are classics, find out how you can have both! A

h, July in East Texas. The days get longer, allowing for more time spent with friends and family. When the sun refuses to go down early this summer, make plans to enjoy it by grabbing some local barbecue, checking out a few breweries and listening to some of the best bands from this side of the Lone Star State. After all, what better way to enjoy the summer than beer, bands and barbecue, East Texas-style. There is no shortage of breweries, local bands and barbecue joints in this area, unfortunately the list had to be narrowed down. So, we turned to a few “experts”, (also known as, a few people with a love for food, craft beer and live music) for advice on the topic, to bring you the best of the best local spots to enjoy during these long summer days. When it comes to barbecue, there is nothing better than Texas Barbecue! Can we get an AMEN? Each joint is famous for something specific, and there’s more than one in the area that has been recognized by Texas Monthly for their award-winning flavor and style. Some of these places probably know your order by heart, others you may have never even heard of and then there are those hidden gems that may appear a bit questionable from the outside! But make no mistake, all of these restaurants know their way BS CENEMAG. COM

BANDS

around a pit and serve up meat so flavorful and tender it will make you want to slap yo mama! However, we highly advise against it! If you haven’t tried some of these places, we definitely recommend that you do. And if you aren’t sure what to order, we have suggestions for you straight from the horses mouth. Who doesn’t want to know what the owner’s favorite menu item is? In addition to a description of the meats and atmosphere of the restaurants, we’ve included a quick look key that shows the price rating, awards won and whether or not live music is offered. Texas Barbecue and live music pair perfectly together. East Texas has talent and there isn’t a venue in town that doesn’t have or wished they had live music on Friday nights. We love live music and have featured many local artist in previous issues. Each musician or band is as different as the genres of music they play. But one thing they have in common is they are sure to liven up these hot July nights. These guys (and girls!) are well on their way to making many more headlines in the future, so take the time to see them up close and personal while you still can. Whether you’re into smooth jazz, rock and roll, pop-punk, or country music, there’s a band for you in this issue. All are incredibly talented and working hard to live out their dream, so even

BAR-B-Q

if you aren’t sure about their particular style of music, go see the band anyway. Don’t be afraid to venture outside of your go-to genre and expose yourself to some new tunes this summer. You might just find a new favorite band in the process. These musicians are entertainers and their performances will get you from idly sitting by to reaching for your dancing shoes. What else comes to mind when you think of bands and barbecue? Hmmm … Oh yeah, beer! Somehow, the three go hand-in-hand. There’s just something about hanging out on a patio, eating dinner and having a drink while listening to live music with friends. After all, there is nothing quite like a cold, Texas beer on a hot summer’s eve. The sip of a hand crafted, flavor filled glass as the sun kisses your cheeks before setting while enjoying the laughter of friends can take you back to a time when worries were non-existent and summer nights seemed to last forever. Several East Texas breweries strive to bring friends together, build community, and just have a good ol’ time! The flavor of each hand crafted brew is made with heart and the creativity flows freely with every new experiment! Fill your summer happy hours with their one of a kind blends.

BANDS DUSTIN BECKER

If you’ve been in East Texas long enough, you’ve probably seen Dustin Becker play music. Maybe it was at a small acoustic gig on a Wednesday night. Maybe it was backed by a horn section on a huge, outdoor stage. It could have been at your third cousin’s Bar Mitzvah at the Lake. The point is, no one works harder at bringing the audience a fantastic show than this guy. He’s got high energy when he needs to bring the crowd up, and he has the voice and timing to keep things slow and steady. Becker can pretty much play or sing anything – his voice and guitar playing are always better than he lets on. He’s a professional musician, in the truest sense of the word – but music isn’t his job, it’s a career. Whether he’s playing original barnburners, classic love songs or even breaking down a medley of mid-90s rap music, Dustin Becker connects with everyone in the room. He’s passionate about what he does, and he wants to share that passion with every audience, every time.

KOPASTETIC MUSIC Whenever you hear Kopasetic Music, you get the feeling that you might have to take your chance to see them while you can – because they might not be around too long; these guys are going places … in a hurry. Their tagline is “The Coldest Band In The Land,” and all it takes is one show to make a believer out of

anyone. They seem to be attacking the stage, but they do it effortlessly – bringing down the house because that’s simply what they came to do. These guys can all seemingly sing and play three or four instruments, well. Their groove is infectious, and it’s a common occurrence for them to start a set surrounded by tables full of

people only to take their first break promising a dance floor of screaming fans that they’ll be right back. From classic funk and soul played to an album-echo perfection, to 10-minute jams showcasing the talents of every member of the band, Kopastetic Music keeps things tight, together and an absolute blast.

STANLEY’S FAMOUS PIT BBQ Perhaps the most well-known barbecue joint in East Texas, Stanley’s in Tyler certainly deserves the recognition. Their popular ribs have a slightly crunchy, sweet crust rubbed with an eleven-spiced mixture on the outside, which holds in the smoked, soft, meaty inside. Their sliced brisket is also a big hit with it’s smokey flavor and crunchy, fat-encrusted rim, dusted with salt and coarse black pepper. Another favorite is their smoked turkey breast, which is peppery and tender. Although the site where Stanley’s sits today has been renovated and renamed, it has forever been a barbecue restaurant. J.D. Stanley bought the business in the 1950s and renamed it to become the famous Stanley’s that it is now. Jen and Nick Pencis took over Stanley’s in 2006 after the death of J.D. but kept his recipes and methods alive. In 2013 the owners revamped the place with a full-service bar and weekly live music. Besides barbecue, they offer breakfast, soul food and vegetarian-friendly cuisine.

SPIN CYCLE

IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW BIKE? WITH SO MANY OPTIONS OUT THERE, YOU SHOULD LET BSCENE TAKE YOU THROUGH THE SPIN CYCLE!

SNOW IN JULY BS CENEMAG. COM

JULY 2015

38 No. 19

SPIN CYCLE Article By: Addi Simmons

T

oday’s bicycles are not the same as you remember from your childhood. New innovations allow for smoother and faster bikes that are easy to take on hilly trails, enable both exercise and relaxation, help you carry groceries, or even help pedal. With so many to choose from, how do you determine which one is best for you? Take a look at some of the more popular types of bikes on the market, and dog-ear this article because these can be found at your local bicycle shop.

FOLDING Folding bikes are ideal for people who live in a small apartment, don’t have a lot of storage room or want to travel with their bike easily. These bikes also come with a wide range of adjustments, making them the best option for a very short or tall frame. The folding mechanisms vary, so one bike may fold differently than another. Although folding bikes are great for commuting, the wheels are typically smaller than most bicycles. The bike is a little less efficient and occasionally harder to handle. However, most folding bike owners feel that the benefits of having one outweigh the disadvantages.

RECUMBENT Recumbent bikes are often more comfortable than most bikes because the seats are large and have a back to help the cyclist relax while riding. As a way of accommodating paraplegics, many manufacturers have started to make recumbent bikes that use handcycles. However, recumbents are not recommended if you live in an area that is hilly, due to the fact that the bike can be difficult to pedal uphill. They’re more ideal for relaxing rides around neighborhoods. Due to the lowness, these bikes make it more difficult for drivers to see you, so it's best to steer clear of high-traffic areas.

MOUNTAIN Designed for riding off-road, mountain bikes are perfect for unpaved trails. These bikes have some type of shock absorbers or suspensions to allow for smoother riding mobility on rough trails, and to help withstand large jumps or drops. They also have flat or upright handlebars and a low gear range, making it easier to pedal up steep trails. Mountain bikes not only feature lower gears, allowing for ease in climbing steep hills, but the straight, wide handlebars offer better steering control that allow you to keep your fingers close to the break levers. Mountain bikes come in two basic varieties: hardtail and full-suspension. Hardtail bikes have a front suspension fork and a firm main frame but no rear shocks. Full-suspension bikes are a lot pricier, but offer both front and rear suspension shocks, making them ideal for aggressive riding and traversing specialized trails. Because of their heavy frame, they don’t go as fast as road bikes, but are equipped to handle any rough terrain.

HYBRID Love hitting the trails but need a bike that’s more practical for commuting? Instead of shelling out dough for two separate bikes, try a hybrid. A cross between a mountain bike and a road bike, these bikes offer a blend of comfort, speed and durability. Ideal for commuting to work or riding trails at the park, hybrids are an excellent choice for someone who is constantly on the go. They have an upright handlebar position and often come with suspension forks to allow for an even smoother ride. Hybrids are the perfect compromise for general use and are best if you need a bike that can multitask.

CRUISER Cruiser bikes are designed for casual riding. Most are single speed or three speed and have the old-fashioned coaster brake, which allows the rider to pedal backwards to stop. These bikes are perfect for those who want to stroll around the neighborhood or ride down the street for a cup of coffee. Cruisers have a classic style, appealing to old and young alike, and feature curved, upright handlebars, wire tires and a padded seat comfortable enough for long rides. Cruiser bikes work best on flat terrain and should be used for short commutes or casual riding only.

ROAD Road bikes are designed for high-speed travel on paved surfaces, which make them ideal for commuting. They feature narrow tires and a lightweight frame. This enables them to speed along roadways quickly, but means they do not transition well to rugged, unpaved roads or trails. Road bikes typically have one of two handlebar styles. The drop-bar handlebars allow for the hands to rest in many different positions, which makes longer rides easier and more enjoyable. They also provide a more aerodynamic position, that allows for faster travel without expending too much energy. However, because it creates a streamlined position, it might put more strain on your back. The flat-bar handlebars allow for an upright position, which makes it the better option for shortdistance commuting or recreational riding.

UTILITY Best for short-distance commutes, running errands or shopping, utility bikes, also known as cargo bikes, are designed to carry or transport various items. They have a sturdy, elongated frame, with a hefty storage rack located over the rear tire. Many different accessories are compatible with these bikes and can be hooked onto the rear rack whether its a basket, child seat or a pack to hold gear. They have an upright seating position, which allows for a good view of the road. For additional strength and stability, utility bikes have extra stokes and wider tires.

ELECTRICASSIST Electric-assist bikes are perfect for those who want to ride a bike to work, but don’t want to show up sweaty and out of breath. They feature battery-powered motors, which help make traveling long distances and climbing hills a little easier. Built-insensors monitor how much pressure is applied to the pedals and adjust battery power accordingly. However, electric-assist bikes are a bit heavier than most bikes, making them harder to ride when the motor is turned off. Photo Courtesy Of: Schwinn

If you’re looking for a specific bike from this list, or already have one that needs to be repaired, the staff at Elite Bicycles in Tyler can help! They’re able to fix anything from a $15,000 race bike to a $50 Huffy, while offering exceptional service. The guys at Elite work on each bike as carefully as if it were their own, and offer free assessments so that you can figure out exactly what your bike needs to have fixed. If you’re just getting into mountain biking, the Elite website (elitebicyclestyler.com) has listed out trails in the Tyler

area, and a general idea of what to expect and how to prepare before your ride. They also have weekly bike rides in groups. Twolegged and four-legged, fury friends are welcome at Cedar Creek with delicious bar foods available! Have a night on the town, a laid back happy hour, or a private event in the Cedar Creek Tap room! Their calendar is filled with Pint Nights, Tastings throughout East Texas Central Market, and Beer Fests. Cedar Creek was awarded a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival which features more than 550 craft breweries from across the nation! This award winning brewery is located

about an hour southeast of Dallas in Seven Points, near Cedar Creek Lake. Drink your handcrafted beer out of a Cedar Creek can on a hot summer day! Their goal is to use every local resource possible, therefore, Cedar Creek beers are served canned rather than bottled to have a positive impact for tomorrow. They are easily recyclable, lake-friendly and light-weight! In addition to partnering to support local animal shelters in need, Cedar Creek hires locals that care about the community. Their beer is brewed by real people with willpower, good taste, strong backbones, loyalty and passion for what they do!

FEATURED BREWS SCRUFFY’S SMOKE ALT Honoring the bold, Scruffy McGee, this smoky legend is paired best with BBQ, burgers, steaks and anything you throw on the grill! ELLIOTT’S PHONED HOME One of Cedar Creek’s favorite Pale Ales, Elliott’s Phone Home brew gives a Calypso blend of lemon, pear and grapefruit. This combines perfectly with a touch of the bittering hop, Apollo. The aroma of fresh grapefruit will fill the summer’s night air! *This brew pairs best with pizza, pasta, and desserts. Avoid spicy foods with this creature! THE LAWN RANGER is a session ale with a solid malt character. This is the perfect brew for a summer’s night when you want to have more than a couple! The use of Rye and Oats, while not typical ingredients for a cream ale, allow them to keep the alcohol low and still provide body to the beer! *Pairs perfectly with sweet, hot, or spicy foods including many Asian dishes, Mexican food, chili, mango, or jalapeno salsa. GONE – A – RYE This brew is a complex blend with hints of pear, peach, citrus and pine. The bitterness is balanced by the sweetness of the malt and spiciness of the rye. *Pairs best with salty foods, grilled and sauced meats and strong cheese. Desserts: salted caramel ice-cream, cheesecake…or both!

BANDS

DAZED Dazed are from another era. These young men look and sound like they just stepped out of a time machine from 1977, all skinny-legs and faded Black Sabbath t-shirts. There is funk and fuzz and plenty of hair to go around, and what they may lack in age they make up for in passion and professionalism. The sound is dirty, but the boys somehow remain clean-cut. These kids were born in the 90s but their taste in classic rock is unparalleled. At a Dazed show you’re going to hear deep cuts from the 60s, 70s and 80s – as well as plenty of originals that sound right at home in that era. Really, they fit in any era, because there is always a need for guns-blazing rock and roll. With influences as varied as Robert Johnson and Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dazed is great for music fans of any age. And, they have a singing drummer … who doesn’t love a singing drummer!?

BLACKTOP MOJO

Dueling guitars? Driving, pounding drums? Relentless, efficient bass? Soaring vocals? Sounds like a straightforward, uncompromising rock band to us. Blacktop Mojo plays hard rock music of a variety that can bring together fans who normally would not listen to something so severe or melodic. They are able to strike an excellent chord – so to speak – that too many bands aspire to and very few can pull off: they are heavy, but in service to the music – not just because they think it’s cool to be louder than the other guys. There is a real balance to their music, brought on by the fact that each member has a hand in writing the songs. And because of that balance, they’re able to fit in at most any venue and have shared the stage with everyone from Aaron Lewis to Whiskey Myers. You can hear a bit of the southern swagger in their driving, chugging tracks… but make no mistake, these guys rock. Cont'd on pg. 32

DUBYA’S SMOKEHOUSE BBQ

The original Dubya’s smokehouse in Gilmer is located inside a little, red tin building. They also have locations in Diana and Hawkins – all of which serve equally tasty barbecue. One of their trademark menu items is the “Flying Pig,” which is a chopped turkey and pulled pork sandwich. It’s a top-seller and favorite among the regulars who venture to try it. They also offer free pinto beans for dine-in customers. Dubya’s has many different homemade sauce options. Although their traditional red sauce is still the customer go-to, one that is quickly becoming popular is a sweet mustard-based sauce called “Sweet and Yellow.” They even create their own rubs for the meat that is smoked in well-seasoned, used barbecue pits, like the 2,500-pound hickory smoker from Austin.

DETAILS: DUBYA’S

MOST POPULAR MENU ITEM: It’s a toss up between the chopped beef sandwich and the “Flying Pig”. WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT: The variety and quality of the sides, the abundance of pork items available and the different sauce options.

BOB’S BARBECUE Located next to a church in Henderson, Bob’s is one of the best barbecue joints on this side of the bible belt. The restaurant opened in 1980 and is owned by Billie and Bob Allen. Their sons also work for the business, making Bob’s barbecue family owned and operated. The meat is cooked by a hickory smoked, indirect-heat pit method. The restaurant is best known for their spicy boudin, ribs and popular brisket. Outside, there are picnic tables under a pavilion for eating outdoors when the weather is nice. Besides its meat, the restaurant is also famous for its desserts, especially the peach cobbler and pecan pie. Many East Texans are loyal fans of Bob’s, including frequent visitor and Henderson Mayor, Pat Brack.

BANDS STEFAN COTTER & THE RASTABILLY’S

STEFAN COTTER & THE RASTABILLY’S Spoken plainly, Stefan Cotter & The Rastabilly’s are overqualified – and it works out perfectly for anyone with the pleasure of hearing their music. These guys are supremely talented musicians playing a lot of deceptively simple music at an expert level. It makes for a surprising experience. Think: Anthony Bourdain making you a grilled cheese sandwich with gourmet ingredients. These East Texas boys veer between old West Texas swing, Southern rock, reggae and punk – sometimes in the same song.. Cotter’s vocals are sweet. The music is a little salty. And you’re going to love them.

YOUNG ONES

YOUNG ONES

Hearing the name of the Young Ones gives you brief sense of what you’re in for with their music: energetic and individualistic. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill bunch of teenagers whining about being grounded. These are serious musicians whose love of songwriting nuance and the search for the perfect pop hook lends them a depth not often seen in music that’s this straightforwardly catchy. You can call it indie rock or pop punk or whatever you want to, really, these guys don’t mind. They are much more concerned with the quality of their sound, the synchronization of their harmonies and exactly how long it takes to get the venue literally jumping up and down. The Young Ones play youthful music maturely. They are seemingly a little too old and a little too young for the sounds that come from their stage – and that puts them right in the perfect spot.

FABER & FRIENDS BAND

FABER & FRIENDS BAND

Photo Courtesy Of: Faber & Friends Band

George A. Faber, II is a supremely talented musician whose gifts have transported him and his music everywhere from piano recitals to the Lincoln Center and the Great Wall of China. Faber plays keyboard and bass, mostly (though he’s on the organ at Green Acres on Sundays), and serves as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Tyler ISD. All that to say, Faber and Friends is a rotating collection of some of the very finest musicians in East Texas. They play smooth versions of jazz, funk wand other standards and are truly an impressive sight to behold – because every show is different. With one lineup, the band may feature a set list heavy with gospel. Another night might bring the free spirit and improvisation built on classic jazz. Whatever the venue, you can be guaranteed that Faber and Friends will show you something you’ve never seen before and turn your ears on to something brand new – even if it’s a song you’ve heard 100 times before.

RIBMASTER’S

OWNER’S COMMENT: “You won’t get better ribs anywhere else and we offer a free sample of them just to prove it.” -David Spivey, Owner

In 2004 David Spivey opened a trailer in Teaselville, TX selling ribs with a special rub. The barbecue became so popular that David decided to close down the tiny trailer and open up not one, but three restaurants in East Texas, all of which have been wildly successful. Originally, David was a paint contractor who enjoyed grilling in his spare time. When his contracting business began to change, David decided to take a chance on Ribmaster’s. The ribs and turkey are fan-favorites, but customers also enjoy Ribmaster’s famous sides like baked beans, corn-on-the-cob, potato salad and green beans. If you’re at the Tyler location, check out “The Four Minute Wonder,” a pulled pork sandwich topped with David’s homemade white barbecue sauce, onions and jalapeños. All of the meat is fresh-cut and all of the food is cooked on-site. Some would argue that Ribmaster’s has some of the best ribs in East Texas (hence the name). Find out for yourself by stopping in at one of their three locations in either Whitehouse, Bullard, or Tyler.

Unc’s Barbecue opened in 2010 by John McFarlin, who had the dream of opening a barbecue joint, and his nephew, Thomas Stauts, who had a passion for barbecuing. The restaurant originally began in a concession trailer, where John and Thomas cooked and catered for all kinds of events. Soon, customers began asking the dynamic duo to open up a brick-and-mortar restaurant that they could frequent on a regular basis. In 2012, the first restaurant opened in White Oak, but unfortunately was lost to a fire. However, this did not dissuade John and Thomas from re-opening the restaurant in a new building at a new location. Unc’s barbecue is now a family owned and operated business thriving in Longview with the support of their loyal fans. Unc’s offers many different varieties of smoked meats. One of the most popular options is the pork rib with hickory smoked crust, soft interior, and Unc’s special barbecue sauce. The Junkyard Dog is also a typical go-to for customers. It has Fritos, meat, cheese and beans all combined together and served with your choice of two sides. For dessert, you can choose between assorted pies and homemade teacakes. The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere, which makes this barbecue joint all the more enjoyable.

Kona Ice: Tyler, TX

It is the perfect place to feed your snow cone habit all summer long. Kona Ice offers gourmet shaved ice in a multitude of flavors and the best part is – they’re mobile! That means Kona Ice is available to rent out for parties, events or fundraisers. Often times, snow cone stands are opened and run independently, but Kona Ice is franchise-based and has locations all over the state and nation! So once you become addicted to their snow cones (which won’t take long), you’ll be able to get your fix even while

on vacation! Their ice is finely shaved into delicate layers which creates a final product that is not too compact or too soft, but has the perfect consistency to fully absorb the flavor you choose. Even if you’re just stopping by in the middle of a hot workday, Kona Ice’s premium snow cones and fun beach music will allow for a quick tropical escape from reality. From time to time they can be found at Lindsey Park during soccer games or at school events.

The origin of the Snow Cone (or Snow Ball, depending on where you’re from) began back in the 1850s. the Industrial Revolution allowed ice to be manufactured and transported throughout parts of the united states. much of the ice was moved in giant blocks on the backs of wagons. Children would often run up to the wagon and request a small amount of scraped ice. mothers began making flavorings in anticipation of their child returing with the ice. The Original flavor, most often made, was egg custard as the only ingredients required were eggs, vanilla and sugar. Red Barn Snow Balls: Tyler, TX

Located in the Red Barn Square next to Cheddars off of S. Broadway, this little snow cone shack offers over 100 flavors to choose from, including popular flavors from Tiger's Blood and Banana to Polar Punch and Fuzzy Navel. They also offer sugar-free

options and frosty cows, which have ice cream inside. It’s cash only, so plan ahead. They are open daily from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sizes range from an 8-ounce small to a 20-ounce extra-large and prices fall anywhere between $1.50 to $3.50.

Shivers Shaved Ice & Snack Shack: Tyler, TX

Located right off of Fifth Street, this snow cone shack is a great place to stop in between summer classes if you’re a student at Tyler Junior College. The ice is ground up very fine so that the texture is smooth and soft like real snow. Shivers Shaved Ice & Snack Shack also offer kid-friendly, fun flavors like Barbie Pink Splash, Photo By: Bryan Stewart

Monster Mash, Batman, Hulk, Superman and Harry Potter. Snow Cones range from $1.50 for a kids size to $3.25 for an extra-large. They’re cash only so come prepared. Shivers is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Bahama Mamas: Canton, TX

Don’t be surprised if you’re in Canton and see a Bahama Mamas sticker or T-shirt. This snow cone shop is a favorite amongst the people of Canton. Not only do they offer deliciously thin shaved ice, they also sell homemade ice cream. They even reward kids for doing well in school, like offering a medium snow cone for “A” honor roll

students. Drive-thru or walk up, it’s hard to miss the brightly-colored, palm tree-decorated Bahama Mamas' sign. Cash only, so don’t forget to stop by the ATM beforehand! They’re located at 281 TX-243 from mid-April to mid-September and are open on Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., as well as Tuesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Tahiti-Blue Sno-Ball Factory: Longview, TX Located in Longview with over 150 flavors to choose from, The Tahiti-Blue Sno-Ball Factory is the perfect place to cool off this summer. They offer a popular Tahitian Cream flavoring that is homemade and tastes great when added to snow cones that desire a little more creaminess. If you’d rather grab a coffee while the kids get a cone, they serve Starbucks as well. The Tahiti-Blue

Sno-Ball Factory has a drive-thru, but also offers outdoor seating under a covered patio so that you can enjoy your snow cone on-location. They accept cash as well as cards. You can find them at 1706 Pine Tree Rd across from the old Pine Tree Middle School. They’re open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Hula Shack: Chandler, TX

The mobile Hula Shack in Chandler offers freshly shaved Hawaiian ice and a variety of mouthwatering snow cone flavors. Some of their most popular flavors include Tiger’s Blood, Blue Coconut and Wedding Cake. They also offer Eagle Brand cream, which is condensed milk that mixes well with the ice to create a snow cone flavor that is creamy and delectable. The ice is shaved from their own homemade blocks into a fine powdery snow, which creates a soft, smooth texture. Because the Hula Shack is mobile, they are available to rent for events, parties

or fundraisers. Although they close for the season on October 31st, they can still be rented throughout the year. They conveniently accept both cards and cash. Prices per cone range from $1.00 to $3.50. They can typically be found at the Old Main Street Farmer’s Market in downtown Chandler unless they’re catering an event in East Texas. They are open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Brian & Scott’s Snoball Longview, TX

Although the lines tend to be long at Brian & Scott’s, there’s a good reason why. Their snow cones are incredibly good. Maybe it’s due to the abundance of flavors they have to choose from or perhaps it’s how they shave their ice that makes their cones so tasty! The ice in the snow cone mimics real snow in texture and is doused in syrup. Because the snow is soft and not crunchy, the syrup absorbs all of the flavor as opposed to sinking to the bottom of the cup. Brian & Scott’s Snoball is located at 122 Johnston St. in the Chaparral Shopping Center in Longview, and are open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Dudebros: Whitehouse, TX

If you live in Whitehouse, then you are probably already aware of this snow cone spot. It’s incredibly popular and although you will almost certainly have to wait in line to get your cone, it’s worth the time spent. The ice is shaved very fine to create a dense yet soft texture that will melt in your mouth. They offer the classics such as Coconut, Strawberry, Banana, etc., and less typical flavors such as Sea Breeze and Apple Pie. They are located off of Troup Hwy in front of Whitehouse Junior High and right beside Dillon’s Store & Deli. Currently, they only accept cash, so prepare ahead of time. They are open Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Twisted Ladder: Tyler, TX

The Twisted Ladder is located in an ideal spot, across from Tyler State Park. After a day of swimming, boating and fishing, pick up a snow cone! The ice is shaved so that it’s thick and fluffy. That way, the ice retains all the flavor that the syrup has to offer. The Twisted Ladder also serves gourmet hotdogs in case you want to grab a bite of food before your dessert. They are open Monday through Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are also open on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and can be found at 14894 FM 14 in Tyler.

From routine vision care, pediatrics, glaucoma treatment and management, Optical Shops with the latest in fashion eyewear and sunglasses to All-Laser LASIK and Cataract Surgery with Advanced Lifestyle Lenses, we offer solutions for all of your vision care needs.

World Class LASIK For patients who struggle with glasses and contact lenses, LASIK can offer an excellent solution with more freedom and better vision. While LASIK has been available for almost two decades, there have been many advancements in this technology. For years, LASIK was performed using a metal blade, or microkeratome. This “traditional” technique is considered outdated by many, as there are extremely precise lasers that have been approved by the FDA to replace the metal blade, offering patients not only peace of mind, but increased accuracy and safety. Heaton Eye Associates uses the latest and most advanced lasers to restore clear vision in a matter of minutes. This outpatient procedure is performed in the dedicated on-site laser vision correction suite at the Tyler office. Heaton Eye Associates specializes in All-Laser LASIK, which has been FDA approved to correct a broad range of vision imperfections, including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

In fact, most people who meet the general age and eye health requirements are good candidates for All-Laser LASIK. This remarkable blade-free procedure is fully customized for each patient’s individual needs, providing exceptional visual outcomes. “Patients often tell us that they’ve been told they’re not candidates for LASIK. Because there have been so many advances in LASIK technology over the years, we encourage patients to be evaluated for LASIK if they are interested, even if they’ve been turned down in the past. Many patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that their vision can be greatly improved with today’s All-Laser LASIK technology,” says Todd Nickel, D.O., a LASIK and Cataract surgeon at Heaton Eye Associates. With the warm summer months here, and outdoor activities to enjoy, patients commonly ask us how quickly they can resume normal activities. Most patients are able to drive and work as soon as the day following their procedure.

“The extensive care and energy that our team puts into maintaining our leadership position on information and technology in the rapidly evolving science of ophthalmology reflects our ongoing commitment to meeting all of our patients’ vision care needs.”

Complications are very rare, and side effects are typically minor. Patients are able to begin enjoying their normal activities with their new vision with very little down time!

Options for Patients Over 40 As we age, changes occur in our vision. Patients begin to notice that their glasses aren’t working as well as they used to or they’re finding themselves in bifocals, trifocals or reading glasses. A comprehensive examination with an ophthalmologist will help determine the course of treatment that is best suitable for their vision and lifestyle. Approximately 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts, and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by the age of 80. While cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures in the U.S., there is still a lot of confusion surrounding this procedure. A common misconception is that a cataract is a “film” that forms over the surface of the eye. In reality, a cataract is actually caused by the natural aging process that occurs inside of the eye. It’s a gradual clouding of the eye’s clear, natural lens that, over time, makes the vision dull, cloudy and less sharp – even with glasses. When is it time for cataract surgery? According to cataract surgeon Adam Dossey, M.D. of Heaton Eye Associates, “The time for cataract surgery is when the loss of vision is enough to affect your ability to perform activities of daily living in your accustomed manner.” With modern advancements in cataract surgery, there is no longer the need to suffer with blurry vision and lifestyle limitations. As with All-Laser LASIK, cataract surgery has evolved tremendously over the past several years.

– Charles Heaton, M.D. “We often see patients who visit us for a LASIK evaluation, hoping to rid themselves of glasses and contacts, and they’re initially disappointed to learn they have cataracts,” said Thad Hardin, M.D., one of Heaton Eye Associates’ LASIK and cataract surgeons, “until we fully educate them on the exciting options available to them with today’s cataract surgery.” Cataract surgery today is an outpatient procedure, much like LASIK, and is performed in our Medicare Approved, AAAHC Certified Ambulatory Surgery Center. Anesthesia is used to ensure that patients are relaxed and comfortable as the surgeon removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens implant. Recovery after cataract surgery is rapid, and patients typically are able to resume many of their normal activities the next day. The most exciting advances in cataract surgery include the use of “Lifestyle Lens Implants.” These lenses provide patients with the option of achieving clear vision with less dependence on glasses and contact lenses following their procedure. Even patients who’ve worn glasses their entire lives may now have an opportunity to see clearly at a distance and near with a Lifestyle Lens, allowing them to regain the vision of their youth.

Budget-Friendly Optical For those patients who are not interested in vision correction surgery at this time, high quality glasses are instrumental in providing good vision. Each of our four locations features a full-service optical shop. Excellent vision care should be affordable to all patients, so we feature quality frames and lenses along with a wide selection of sunglasses to fit any budget. We offer complete pairs (frames and lenses) starting at $99, and carry designer brands such as Gucci, Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Tiffany and Company, Coach, Kate Spade and many more! Our friendly opticians are licensed professionals specially trained to help our patients select the frames and lenses that work best with their lifestyle and budget.

HICKORY HILL BBQ Hickory Hill in Tyler has been cooking up barbecue for over 60 years. Originally, it was called “Big Warren’s Barbecue.” The current owner, Kerry Shaw, used to visit the restaurant with his grandpa when he was a kid. Years later, he ended up buying it from Warren and turning it into Hickory Hill BBQ. Although the name has changed, the restaurant walls remain the same, as does the smoker that is used to cook the meat, which was built by Big Warren himself. Kerry even markets his barbecue as, “the way it used to be.” Kerry has been cooking barbecue all his life. He and his wife Kelly decided to purchase the barbecue joint in 2009 and have been serving the people of East Texas since. He uses five different types of natural wood to smoke the meat, giving it a bold, sweet flavor. They sell burgers, ribs, sausage and even tacos. Their desserts, like the Lemon Crest Pie, are popular as well. To this day, Hickory Hill keeps it quaint and simple. Inside, there’s enough seating for about eight people and they open at 11 a.m. until the meat’s gone from Thursday through Sunday. Kerry says that they’re trying to become the best barbecue joint in the world. Sure they might have a ways to go, but they certainly show potential!

ADAM’S RIB The original Adam’s Rib was opened in Lakeport by Janie and Gary Adams. The second location opened on January 30th, 2014 in Longview. Although Janie and Gary have since passed away, their barbecue tradition has carried on thanks to current owners Laura and Rickey Cox. Their meats are wildly popular, but their fried pies from “The Original Fried Pie Shop” are just as much a fan-favorite. The pies are world famous and made fresh daily. Adam’s Rib also offers a

multitude of various sides like tomato salad, pasta salad, mac-n-cheese, banana pudding and garlic mashed potatoes, as well as many other options. The restaurant itself is located in a somewhat small, metal building. The inside is covered in old-fashioned country decor. That, along with friendly staff, allow for a welcoming environment to enjoy your smoked barbecue.

BANDS THE ELEGANT FEW

THE ELEGANT FEW The Elegant Few are a party-band. They aren’t a “party band,” in the sense that they only play parties or events (though we’ve seen them absolutely kill it on both occasions). No, they are a band that is literally having a party onstage, every night. They sing, they rap, they play horns and keyboards and guitars and probably the spoons if you ask nicely enough. They have James Brown levels of hustle, and simply will not accept anything less than every single person in the place on their feet and moving with their music. Their production is spot on, the set lists are efficient and potent, and their playing is sharp as a knife. If you go to an Elegant Few show, mathematically speaking, there is a zero percent chance you won’t have fun. It’s science. Photo Courtesy Of: The Elegant Few

DELANO GUEVARA Simply put, Delano Guevara is one of the most talented guitar players you will ever have the chance to hear play. If you ever see him on a poster, go ahead and change your plans if needed – because you are going to want to see this. When left to his own devices, he plays searing rhythm and blues that makes everyone in the place stop what they are doing, put down whatever is in their hands and turn to pay attention. He can be found playing around East Texas as part of The Trio, Something Blue, Dustin and Delano and probably several dozen other bands and musical collectives. Sometimes he’s up front playing a sharp and wandering lead, and sometimes he’s tucked around the side in perfect rhythm. But no matter what, Delano is playing something that will make you stand up and watch, knowing you’re seeing a virtuoso in his element.

RAMOTH GILEAD (THE REALLY BAD)

DELANO GUEVARA

RAMOTH GILEAD (THE REALLY BAD) Ramoth Gilead has a spirit to his music that brings to mind the troubadours of old. He’s traveled the whole of the United States playing music for as many people as he could, anywhere he could. You can hear the road-weariness in his voice and in his playing. He is a quiet man, but his music carries weight that belies the volume. Gilead’s clean melodies and lean guitar and harmonica playing match his stirring lyrics perfectly. Ramoth Gilead doesn’t have a backing band, a production team or a light show ... but what he does possess is a sense of himself, his music and the passion to carry forth his message to anyone who will listen – just like he always has.

BANDS BLACKTOP GYPSY

BLACKTOP GYPSY Andie Kay Joyner and Heather Stalling write some of the very best country music coming out of East Texas – or anywhere, for that matter – as blacktopGYPSY. Accomplished songwriters and musicians, (Stalling on fiddle, Joyner on guitar, both on vocals), these two ladies have the experience, chops and know-how to write and perform music that is soulful, heartbreaking and toe-tapping – sometimes all at once. As implied by their name, these ladies have traveled near and far on the back of their talent as musicians, and have lived the lives they needed to build the catalogue of songs they wanted. The influences are varied and diverse, but with a fiddler and country vocalist, the underlying rhythms and tones of classic country tend to dominate their sound. Surrounded by so many bubblegum pop-country ingénues, blacktopGYPSY imparts the gravity and experience of some of the very best country musicians in history – having walked down their own roads to end up on whatever stage the next show may bring. Photo Courtesy Of: blacktop GYPSY

LUCAS FOR SHERIFF

LUCAS FOR SHERIFF

Are Lucas for Sheriff country? Are they bluegrass? What about “Texas” music? The answer is yes... and no. Their music is soulful, full of feeling and definitely twinged with the strong, lonesome strum of classic country. It’s emotional, both lifting up and pulling the listener down – but always in a pleasant way. The songs tell stories with lyrics (the harmonies are a great touch, adding depth), and with their music. There’s rock in there, too... and after having your heart strings expertly plucked you might find yourself on the dance floor. With a dash of electronic, ambient guitar and plenty of down home reverb, Lucas For Sheriff doesn’t sound like anyone else but every song somehow seems refreshingly familiar. Photo By: Jamie Maldonado Photography

THE TUXEDO CATS

THE TUXEDO CATS

Todd Rinlee can play the guitar... I mean, the guy can play. Rinlee’s blues-inflected guitar is at the core of The Tuxedo Cats. With a keyboard, guitar, bass and drums, these guys can play pretty much anything – and they do. From George Strait covers to classic rock and “any jazz they can get away with,” The Tuxedo Cats versatility might be what you notice first. They can sound just like the radio version of a 1974 classic, or they can turn up the amps and have an entire place jumping along with them. The passion for what they do is evident in the live shows – even when the venue requires a low decibel level. Great performers and consummate professionals, The Tuxedo Cats are engaging and always a blast.

MAN ABOUT

TOWN WITH DR. AUBREY D. SHARPE PHOTOS BY: BRYAN STEWART

Tuscan Slice Is a To-Do-Againer I t was just six days before the kick-off of the 2015 record breaking Tyler Area Chamber Membership Event. Excitement was runnin’ rampant. The goal was to top Tyler’s national record of memberships sold in 2 ½ days. To do so would require 16 chairmen, 80 captains and over 400 volunteers working feverishly every day including the week before.

"The Man” was a captain for Lonny Uzzell’s “Green Team.” We had just trained our five captains and nearly 30 team members in the process of selling memberships and needed to take a breather before focusing on the last grueling days till kickoff. So, what did we do? Nine of us hooked up at Tuscan Slice on

the corner of Old Jacksonville Hwy and Loop 323. Owner, Jonathan Evola and regional director of their four locations, Leo Morales, had our private room, just off the bar, perfectly prepared with drinks being poured as our teams trickled in.

Listen, if you’ve not tried this unique place out yet, you must real soon. The Evola brothers and staff have reworked the building into a “Rustic Sheik” old world style Italian Villa. They have effectively used earth tones, stonework from Italy, cozy lighting and the most unique woodfired cooking approach imaginable. They built two wood-fired ovens for pizza and bread and a wood-fired grill with an adjustable table

grate for managing the heat. Hey, they cook nearly everything over real burning wood. The redesigned main dining room, which is open to the kitchen, caters to the kids. You bet, the kiddos make their own pizza right at the kitchen counter. They roll it … sauce it … cheese it … eat it! For $6.99 they make and eat their own pizza and get a drink and an ice cream cup. How’s that! Mom and dad can eat some of the best food in town in peace while watching the kiddos have one hoot of a time. The Evola brothers take pride in providing a place that is more than a spot to have a meal, but also a place to make a memory. These guys B SC EN EM A G.COM

ON THE MENU are big on family and faith. The Evola’s say, “our guests are not just customers, but we consider them part of our family.” Now, the food is “one of Tyler’s best kept secrets.” It’s old-world, homemade Italian cuisine with classic dishes, steaks, chops, fresh seafood and Neapolitan-style pizza baked in authentic Italian wood-burning ovens (Gluten Free is available). Their motto is “fresh made wood-fired Italian food served in a family setting.” At Tuscan Slice, you drink, dine, and enjoy. Did I say drink? The place has a fullservice bar with stools, booths, and hightop tables. Like sports? They have four large screen TVs. Like warm and cozy in the winter? They have a great corner fireplace. Listen to "The Man" you may eat in, take out, or have your party catered by Tuscan Slice. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m.9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and Sunday, 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. The Tuscan Slice team rolled out the red carpet for Lonny’s Green Team. We tried numerous family style items: four great salads, four starters and four or five over the top entrées. Nothing was mediocre. Every item was delightful and the starters and entrées were all permeated with that wonderful wood-fired flavor. The hit of the night was their silver bullet “steak vesuvio”, which is a 12 oz. beef tenderloin grilled to perfection with grilled Italian sausage links, fresh cut garlic roasted potatoes, bell peppers and onions with their special Pomodoro sauce. "The Man” will do this one again! Our wonderful wait staff, Fredricka, had us sample the well balanced Italian wine list, which ranges from $28-$66 per bottle or by the glass, $6.00-$9.00. Every palate can be pleased. The food was so good we ate till we could eat no more … and then the homemade desserts came out from Creme Brulee to Tiramisu and more. My, My! We stayed till late and then meandered home knowing we would come back to celebrate the victory of beating our own membership record … which we did! So, if you’re out and about, look for us, we’ll be about town.

Desk to Dinner Function in fashion is never forgettable, so purchasing key pieces that complement each other is fitting. In menswear this season, investing in a light-washed denim and adding a very in-the-now, textured-cotton tie, not only makes a statement, but kicks things up a notch for a more dynamic work -wear look by day. To complete it, dawn a dark brown studded belt and denim-hued shoes … it’s a step in the right direction. From evening into night, un-tuck that shirt, take off the tie and let the simplified look take you to happy hour for cocktail. You can also mix things up a bit by purchasing other key pieces, which will enable the entire wardrobe to go further into the season. Consider a brown belt with complementary-colored shoes. If you can’t wear denim to work, consider denim-look slacks. And if you wore blue yesterday, think pink today!

THE RIGHT

FRAME

OF MIND Article By: Editor-in-Chic, Veronica Terres Photos By: Lindsey Todd Morgan

I

’m probably going to age myself, here, but I remember the days when very few people could rock a pair of sunglasses like the oneand-only Elton John or make a pair of RayBan® Wayfarers famous like Tom Cruise did in his “Risky Business” days. Today, however, anyone can be a superstar in whatever pair of sunglasses fits their fancy and their face — all they have to do is take some time to check out the latest options today’s designers have to offer in the evergrowing sunglasses fashion market. For those looking to invest in a new pair this summer, the good news is … really, anything goes. From vintage cat-eyes, classic wayfarers and large round-framed sunnies to tortoise shell, leather-temples or bright red, hot pink and royal blue hued options—all that really matters to be on trend is which shades suit you.

FOR HER CHANEL • These authentic, stingray leather Chanel sunglasses are truly a unique investment pair. The exotically adorned frames are part of the brand’s Prestige Collection. • Looking to make an immediate statement that instantly makes you think … hot pink? Chanel delivers by offering shades in all colors of the rainbow including bright red and blue.

Optician, Mike Martin Jr. of Ragsdale & Martin Optical, Inc. in Tyler, Texas took time to give BSCENE readers some insight in today’s shady affairs emphasizing that there really is no “right” way in picking the next perfect pair except to choose what you like and need. “There’s not a great rule,” he explained. “We are all unique. Some people who have a round face can wear a pair of round glasses and look awesome. We [at Ragsdale & Martin] just go by what will look good on the individual.”

PRADA •Prada steps up the vintage-cateye trend with this purr-fect pair of tortoise shell sunnies that have contrasting color temples. You’ll definitely be the cat’s meow. • If you’ve been shy about dawning a pair of retro, largeround frames, there’s no time like the present to try the playful, yet sophisticated, silhouette.

BS CENEMAG. COM

And, if that is the case, then prospective sunglass buyers should take time with a professional like Martin who can help them sift through the many choices in colors, shapes, styles, textures, functions, materials and prices that are out there. In today’s sunglass world, the sky truly is the limit. Martin also explained that in the last ten years eyewear has become much more of an accessory, and optically, the options are just getting better and better. While he can’t select your pair for you, he did take time to let readers in on some of the various in-the-now, as well as, always-classic options currently available through his doors and out and about on city streets. JULY 2015

No. 71

FOR HIM Martin explained that round shapes are a big hit, but in general, designers are making the man feel more like a celebrity or sports mogul through a variety of options like these:

OLIVER PEOPLES Looking for a more classic, sophisticated, effortless, yet on-trend style? Then opt for this neutral, pair “Executive” by Oliver Peoples.

PRADA Yes, men can wear Prada, too! Nothing says edgy, sophisticated and fashion-forward like a man in a pair of gunmetal Prada sunglasses.

TOM FORD Your man will be just like James Bond if you opt for Tom Ford’s “Snowdon” pair that 007 will dawn in the next film, “Spectre” out this fall. Select color 52N and you and Daniel Craig will have something in common.

OAKLEY Oakley takes their sunny eyewear up a notch by kicking up the sophistication. These black metal-framed glasses will let you work hard, play hard and look good doing it!

Now that we’ve focused on what looks good, some practicality in function may be of more importance than its form. If that’s the case, there are various technologies available for you to consider.

No. 72

B SC EN EM A G.COM

LENS TREATMENTS • If shadows and glare are a problem, especially while driving, opt for a pair with the latest advancements in polarization. Polarized lenses help eliminate bright light from reflective surfaces, which is one reason that makes them popular for sports lovers. • Back in the 80s, my mom thought it would be a great idea to add a little bit of rose-color tint to my pink, coke-bottle glasses to help with sunny days. My mom meant well, but looking back at my childhood photos with those glasses perched on my face is laugh-out-loud funny, not to mention, a bit painful. Moms, please spare your children this pain. There are many advancements in adaptive lenses or photochromic lenses that can adjust from clear to dark, like Transitions® Adaptive Lenses. Photochromic sunglasses as explained by The Vision Council (the entity that represents the manufacturers and suppliers of the optical industry), adapt to different brightness levels and maximize visibility in low light or foggy conditions. Their website explains that yellow, red and gray tints decrease distortion, whereas copper-tinted shades heighten contrast. Another option is to simply purchase a separate pair of sunglasses and have the prescription lenses added to them.

CUSTOM SHADES • For the avid hunter, fisher, biker or overall outdoorsman/woman, there are various options available to meet your needs too. Martin explained that he receives quite a few orders from ladies who play both tennis and golf and need a pair to work for both. He also receives frequent requests for custom, shooting sunglasses. The Vision Council’s website provides further information on choosing sunglasses to fit your needs. The site also breaks down the information into adults, teens and kids categories. • Last but not least, let’s not forget, that ultimately, sunglasses are meant to be more than a fashion accessory. The Vision Council explains that sunglasses are a critical health necessity to protect us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. They explain that UV rays can damage your eyes similar to the way they can damage your skin. The council points out, “UV damage is cumulative, meaning that damage done to the eyes adds up over time, and once the damage has been done it cannot be reversed. For this reason, it is never too early or too late to start protecting your eyes from damaging amounts of UV radiation. You can decrease your UV exposure by wearing sunglasses any time you are outdoors, year-round.” Since UV radiation is present no matter what the season, investing in a pair of sunnies for protection as well as function is all the more critical—if you’d just like your pair to be fashionable too—then who can argue with that frame of mind?

Time For A Picnic Article By: Kim Lewis

O

ne of the reasons I love exterior home design so much is this simple: I love being outside!

With fireworks, the celebration of July 4th and summer in full swing, this is the perfect month to break out the ol' picnic basket! Think about it … when was the last time your family packed up and ventured to a local East Texas park? Recently, I’ve found myself lounging on Sundays in Austin, at either Zilker Park or the local Barton Springs. Taking in the fresh air, watching dogs play and being surrounded by families soaking in the sun is a great way to rest after a busy workweek. While the parks are a great escape, you don’t have to venture too far to gather in true picnic-style. Your own backyard can be the perfect setting to throw out the blanket. So, let’s look at what should be inside your picnic basket! (My whimsy way of saying, let’s get your backyard ready for hungry guests.)

The Blanket THIS IS YOUR PALLET TO SERVE AND ENTERTAIN GUESTS FROM. No matter the size of your yard, you always have room for a picnic. For some homes, you might have space to create a built-in BBQ grill area … while other spaces work well with a butler stand, bar cart or a simple serape blanket in the grass! If you are considering constructing that dream built-in BBQ space, I suggest integrating the same or a complimentary stone that goes with the façade of your home. It’s important to make this addition look like it was always there, not added on later. For the countertop, Cosentino just came out with a new brand called Dekton, which is an ultra-compact engineered countertop, similar to Silestone. The difference is that the material is highly UV and scratch resistant, fireproof and resilient to abrasion and stains, making it one of the best products in the industry for outdoor countertops. Check out this thoughtfully integrated outdoor serving area at: pearsondesigngroup.com

Having a small sink, grill and undercounter refrigerator makes entertaining guests a breeze. If you have the opportunity in the architecture of the home, create a pass-through window from the kitchen to the backyard. Drinks, condiments and oven-baked dishes can all be passed through the window for quick access. An outdoor kitchen is well worth the cost if you entertain a lot, and can increase the value of your home as you add usable square footage to the buyer. When you are placing your new BBQ area (whether it’s built-in or mobile), be sure to keep it close to the back entrance for quick access to your kitchen. Consider the direction of the sunlight and which way you’ll be facing at the grill. You don’t want to be battling the western setting sun while standing over a pit of charcoals. If your outdoor kitchen space is uncovered, consider building a pergola or installing shade sails to avoid the sun while standing over a hot grill. Parasoleil has beautiful panels that can add an artistic pattern to your outdoor space, while offering significant shade. If space in the yard is limited, use a bar cart or butler stand to set out dishes and drinks. Or go old-school and layout a blanket in the grass. Now that’s what you call a real picnic. Photo Courtesy of: Pearson Design Group

The Ingredients WHAT SHOULD WE PACK IN THE BASKET? HERE’S WHERE OUR “GROCERY” STYLE LIST COMES INTO PLAY. WHAT DO YOU REALLY NEED FOR A SUCCESSFUL PICNIC AFTER ALL? PICNIC BASKET: Because you have to set the mood. A BLANKET, OF COURSE: In this case, the grass is NOT greener FUN STRAWS: For kids and adults that want to feel like kids. BREAD BOARD: Impress guests with a spread worthy of Parisian decent … What would a picnic be without wine, cheese, olives and baguettes? MASON JARS: Perfect for serving fruit salads, deserts or lemonade … in a bug free zone! GARLAND: Throw a bit of bunting on the tree you settle under for an instantly whimsical atmosphere. ENAMELWARE DISHES: Vintage style enamelware is durable, light and recommended for outdoor use. GAMES: Picnics are meant for play! GOOD TUNES: Take along a battery-operated lightweight radio.

Have fun with the place setting for your picnic. Check out the kitchen paper placemats on the market. Compostable wooden utensils are a smart choice for the environment. Flowers are the final touch … For picnics, I say go as authentic as possible to the setting and gather a handful of the closest wildflowers and ornamental grass in sight. The best part about picnic food can be summed up in one word, Fresh. The farm-to-table movement feels more personal when we are eating outside in nature.

On The Menu Photo By: Kim Lewis

WHILE THERE ARE A MILLION PICNIC RECIPES OUT THERE, I’LL LEAVE YOU WITH A FAVORITE: I suggest layering your preferred salad ingredients into a mason jar. Pour the dressing at the bottom, so it doesn’t mix too much with the fresh vegetables. In the cheese section of your local grocer, they often have small samples of fine cheeses you can try. Consider fruit infused ice cubes to give your water an extra refreshing kick! with refreshing punch ideas, like this Cranberry * Experiment Basil Spritzer

INGREDIENTS 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup basil leaves 2 cups unsweetened cranberry juice 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1 Liter chilled club soda 4 each sliced lime 1 cup fresh cranberries 1/2 cup basil leaves DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water and sugar to a boil. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add 1/2 cup basil leaves, remove pan from heat, and let steep for 20 minutes. 2. Strain syrup and let cool for at least 1 hour. In a large pitcher, combine syrup, unsweetened cranberry juice, and fresh lime juice. 3. Fill pitcher with chilled club soda, then add lime slices, fresh cranberries, and 1/2 cup basil leaves. To serve, pour spritzers over ice, top each with a splash more club soda, and garnish with basil. The beauty in creativity for me is that good design should engage all of our senses. From smells, sounds and sight, it all must relate to portray one beautiful image. The goal is to always create a space that feels comfortable and inviting to you, your family and your guests. When you can serve guests in your own backyard as casually as a picnic, you know you’ve got one happy home space worth sharing! So, what do you say … is it time for a picnic?

ith 268,820 square miles making up the great state of Texas, surely there must be something new to discover? Whether you’re a travel junkie or a homebody, taking a little time for a fun getaway is always a good idea. While the Piney Woods of East Texas is lusciously green (most of the time) and familiar, take a step out to explore the rest of this vast state we call home. Certainly, the Alamo is an iconic tourist spot and having not one, but two, Six Flags offers thrill-packed fun, but here are some places that go above and beyond your average bucket list of tourist destinations.

BIG BEN RANCH STATE PARK

BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK Big Bend National Park, one of the most noted hiking destinations in Texas, offers both novice and expert hikers miles of trails to explore. Not only are you going to meet your daily, maybe even weekly, workout quota, but you’re also going to experience many amazing views. So, get your GoPros out! The biggest state park in Texas, Big Bend, also offers mountainbiking, paddling and horseback riding trails. For those looking for an extended trip, several camping options are available.

THE CAVERNS OF SONORA Fun in the sun is great, but there are also some exciting adventures waiting below the surface. The caverns of Sonora are known worldwide for being one of the most beautiful show caves of natural beauty to be explored. You could venture 150 feet below ground in a Crystal Palace Tour or rappel fifty feet into the Devil’s Pit in the Discovery Challenge. The caverns, 15 miles southwest of Sonora, are halfway between San Antonio and Big Bend National Park, making it a perfect tourist stop on your exploratory road trip through Texas.

SPOETZL BREWERY

SPOETZL BREWERY All right you beer enthusiasts, if you haven’t already, hop in the car and head to Shiner, Texas, home of Spoetzl Brewery! Named after founder Kosmos Spoetzl, every drop of Shiner is brewed here. Since 1909, the Shiner name has grown to be recognized nationally and praised right here in Texas. From the original Bock to the Ruby Redbird, Shiner produces over 10 brews and you can learn about the process that brings such quality beer. Tours are available during the summer, for those 21 and older. For tour times and days, visit the company website.

MARFA LIGHTS The Marfa lights have come to be known as a scientific phenomena, but to some there may be a supernatural element to these mysterious, sourceless lights. While they can’t be predicted, the lights are reported to last from a few seconds up to a couple of hours, appearing as a myriad of colors. Be sure to arrive well before nightfall, when the sun goes down. You want to be in a prime viewing area, at about 10 miles east of the town of Marfa. Located about two and a half hours outside of El Paso, the town also offers a variety of artwork sprawled throughout the town for daytime visitors. For Fashionistas who follow fashion bloggers, you'll notice the stand-alone Prada store located here as a popular backdrop. LONESTAR FACT: MARFA TX HAS BEEN THE BACKDROP FOR SEVERAL MAJOR HOLLYWOOD MOTION PICTURES SUCH AS GIANT, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN AND THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

A mile and a half hike through rugged terrain will give you access to this cascading water that falls from a 60-foothigh cliff into a grotto below. Don’t forget to pack your cameras. For those who don’t want to take the trail alone or unguided, the state park offers a tour of the Falls.

PALO DURO CANYON While we may not have the Grand Canyon, we do have the second largest canyon in the country. Nestled in the heart of the Panhandle, and a part of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the canyon is another hiking hot-spot with over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. There is also a horseback riding BYOH (bring your own horse) option, where you can ride through some of the 1,500 acres made specifically for horseback riding. Campsites are available, or you can stay in one of the few cabins settled either on the canyon’s rim or floor. During the summer, visitors are encouraged to get tickets to one of the weekly showings of TEXAS, an outdoor musical drama that depicts the triumphs and struggles of early settlers.

ENCHANTED ROCK What makes Enchanted Rock such a mystical landform? You’ll have to climb the ancient dome to see what magical views are in store. This giant pink, geological wonder isn’t just for scientists to appreciate. Those who like to rock climb can get some good practice on the 1,800-plus-foot tall rock. Hiking, backpacking, camping, picnicking and stargazing are all encouraged. Enchanted Rock is located in the middle of Enchanted Rock Natural Park, just north of Fredericksburg.
