In recent years at BSB we have enjoyed extraordinary success in the annual COBIS (Council of British International Schools) Poetry Competition This prestigious competition is open to students from any COBIS school and each year sees hundreds of entries from all over the world. Under the guidance and mentorship of English teacher, polymath and poet in residence, Alison Clarke, our students have really distinguished themselves. In 2017, when the theme was My Country: How I See It, we had two winners: Zachary in the 11-14 age group category, and Jessica in the 15-19 senior section. Last year, Francesco Muci’s poem in response to the theme The Last Page, once again won the 15-19 category for BSB. Such a sustained level of success in this competition is unprecedented for any school and highlights the talent, imagination and flair of so many of our students. This year’s theme is Today’s Actions Shape Tomorrow’s World. As usual, the English Department have launched a preliminary internal competition to help us select the top six poems to be our 2020 COBIS entries. The student response, as ever, has been inspired and inspiring. Fingers crossed for more poetic successes in 2020! Tapestry • 49
