A teenager from Derbyshire has taken part in this year’s Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need. Sixteen-year old Harvey joined Matt Baker in a one-to-one ramble around the Peak District, which was broadcast in a special programme ‘The Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need’ on Sunday 1 November.

Over the last 5 years, Harvey has had to come to terms with the loss of his older brother Ed, who died in 2015. Harvey and Ed shared a passion for farming and the great outdoors. To help deal with the loss of his brother at such a young age, Harvey found the support he needed at Treetops Hospice Care in Derbyshire.

Treetops provides counselling and emotional support for children, young people, adults and families who are dealing with a life-limiting illness or bereavement. The charity supports young people like Harvey with their emotional wellbeing, giving them the tools they need to be open about their feelings and helping them live with the loss of their loved one into the future. Despite the challenges he has faced, Harvey still has a passion for farming and enjoys spending the holidays helping out on his greatuncle’s farm.

Ahead of the ramble, he said: “I can’t wait to get going with my ramble. I really enjoy being in the outdoors, and spending time with Matt Baker and the Countryfile team will be a great experience. I’m so happy to be taking part in something I know will go on to support others who, like me, have had to deal with bereavement and the loss of someone close.” Harvey’s mum, Amanda, added:

“As a family, we’re so grateful for all the support Treetops Hospice Care has provided to us and Harvey. We’re thrilled Harvey will be joining Matt on this ramble, and we are all so proud of him and what he will achieve.”

Treetops Hospice Care currently receives a grant of £30,000 from BBC Children in Need to provide counselling sessions for children and young people who have lost someone close to them. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the charity has received an additional grant of £4,500 from BBC Children in Need to provide care packages for bereaved children and young people.

About Treetops Hospice Care

It’s been very hard without our patients here on site and an emotional time; we miss them.

Treetops, based in Risley, Derbyshire, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions and those who’ve been bereaved. The hospice is doing all it can to continue to support those in most need during the COVID-19 pandemic, including by providing ongoing support for over 70 patients with terminal illnesses who are shielding at home.

The hospice provides patients with ‘Cake and Care’ packages of treats and activities, as well as making regular wellbeing calls. It has also moved some of its services online, including a carers’ support group, a virtual café and chair-based exercise groups.

Clare Downing, Wellbeing Space team member at Treetops Hospice Care, explained: “Virtual sessions for our patients are very important because they give them one-to-one contact. They can see other people on the screen who they used to meet with, so it gives that familiarity, but most importantly it means they’re not so secluded and isolated.

“Mentally and physically, it’s the way forward until things change. We have some quite elderly patients who have been so determined to access the virtual classes that they’ve taught themselves how to use Zoom and developed new skills, which is brilliant. It shows their resilience and that they want to keep in contact with us. “It’s been very hard without our patients here on site and an emotional time; we miss them.”

The hospice welcomes donations to the Treetops COVID-19 Appeal to ensure the future of the hospice and its services.
