The Bryn Mawr School Celebrating Fifty Years of Black Alumnae: 1968-2018
For the first, so there could be many.
This started as an idea. For our senior project, we decided to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the first black student graduating from Bryn Mawr, Erselle Datcher. In a way, it felt like fate. What were the chances that we would be in the graduating Class of 2018? What were the chances of us coming to Bryn Mawr and becoming not only a part of the school’s legacy but a part of her legacy as well? So, this is for Erselle Datcher. This is for every black Bryn Mawr girl, past, present, and future. We wanted something that embodied not only Erselle Datcher but every Black Bryn Mawr girl. We thought of a yearbook that included the picture of every black student during their senior year. But, before we could even compile the yearbook itself, we had to figure out who was going to be in it. We went through every yearbook from 1968 to 2018 and wrote down the name of every black student that reached their senior year. It was not as easy as it may sound. There was cross-referencing, facebook searching, and researching of the black diaspora to try and make an accurate and complete list of names. Because of human error, there may be mistakes, especially pertaining to something as personal as identity. We hope that whoever is reading this enjoys what we put together.
