The Valley’s Best Golf at Bryce Resort

Golf is popular with the ladies at Bryce Resort.

L

ooking for the Best Golf in the Valley? Look No Further Than Bryce Resort! The golf course at Bryce Resort is one you will want to play again and again. It offers the best golf in the Shenandoah Valley, hands down! Enjoy the beautiful scenery while dodging the tricky little stream that meanders through the gently rolling, yet difficult golf course. Designated as Challenging, the par-71, 6,295 yard course is surrounded by the beauty of Great North Mountain and offers the very best rounds of golf in the Valley. 6 • Bryce Resort

This serene, Alpine-like setting belies the fact that this course will both challenge and entertain you. From the novice to the expert, swing, stroll and putt your way along the beautifully maintained greens and fairways. Since 2008, Bryce Resort has consistently been voted “the most familyfriendly resort in the mid-Atlantic”. Our course exemplifies this moniker by offering opportunities for families that many courses in the area do not – Family Golf. Introduced in the summer of 2011, Bryce initiated a program that creates the incentive for Northern Shenandoah Travel Guide

Bryce’s PGA Professional and member of the Quarter Century Club, offers a Junior Golf School to kids age 5-17. During this week-long school kids will learn all aspects of the game of golf including basic golf skills, safety and etiquette, courtesy and care of the course, sportsmanship, playing the game by “the rules of golf” and most importantly, that golf is a game to be enjoyed. Besides the kids and family programs, take the opportunity to join the Monday Night Golf League, Ladies Bryce Golf Association (open to non-Bryce members for the first time) or take advantage of great rates starting at $19 with Twilight Golf. Purchase season driving range passes, and make sure to keep up with the many special, limited-time offers you can find in the Bryce Online Store.

parents to introduce their kids to the game of golf. Kids age 12 and under can play FREE after 3:00pm daily except Saturday with an accompanying adult. In addition to this exciting program, our course received the PGA-certified U.S. Kid’s Golf designation in 2008 – a designation that exemplifies its commitment to enhancing the resort’s family friendly experience; creating opportunities for families to spend quality time together playing America’s favorite game! Fishing on Stoney Creek & Fly Fishing with Murray’s Fly Shop

I

n 2011 Bryce Resort formed a joint venture with Murray’s Fly Fishing Shop in Edinburg, VA, which introduced visitors and guests to the joys of fishing. This year 450+ rainbow trout have been stocked in our stream thereby enhancing the spring and summer experience. Purchase daily fishing passes for $10 or a season pass for $100 at the resort and cast your line into clear, sparkling water. Don’t have a fishing rod? No worries, you can rent Orvis rods and tackle. We will even sell you the flies! A Virginia fresh water fishing license is required. All fishing is catch and release. If you are a fly fishing aficionado, or think you would like to be, take advantage of our fly fishing school designed by Harry Murray and taught by Murray’s Fly Shop certified instructors following Harry’s signature “On-the-Stream” school format. The school emphasizes the fun of fly fishing while maintaining a level of

Zip through the mountains, or bungee jump (right) at Bryce Resort.

Zip Line Adventure Tour, Bungee, Climbing Wall

I

ntroduced in the summer of 2008, Bryce Resort’s enhanced mountain activities have proved to be a major success. Attracting crowds all summer long, these activities provide the entire family with enjoyment and stimulating fun. Jumping, climbing, or zipping – lots of choices for having fun! For something fast how about a zip down the mountain on the zip line? With newly relocated zip stations to enhance the experience, this fast-paced tour attracts participants of all ages – some as old as 85 and as young as 10. Meet in the Resort ski school first to get a short orientation on the ins-and-outs of zip-lining, safety procedures, and how to make the most of your adventure. Take the chair lift and then a short hike to the first station, and begin your “flight” down the mountain. Experienced zip line attendants 10 • Bryce Resort

will help you into a special harness, give you some last minute encouragement and send you down to the next station. Reaching speeds of 40mph, at heights upwards of 65-feet, this heartracing scenic tour of Basye/Bryce Mountain will give you the thrill that has been missing from your life. There are 10 stations and the entire tour takes about an hour and a half. You must be at least 10 years of age and 70lbs. Proper attire is required

including closed shoes – no sandals. Reservations for the Zip Line are required and can be made by emailing skischool@bryceresort.com. The climbing wall and bungee will give you the opportunity to test your strength and climbing skills. The best value is the first time package which includes the lesson, lift ticket, equipment, helmet and pads.

And, of course, the opportunity to see important pieces of America’s entertainment and political history, and a fully accessible tour. The Yellow Barn at Shenandoah Caverns is the Valley’s newest attraction and entertainment venue. It offers visitors a whimsical look at our agricultural heritage and rural life with historical displays that include restored antique farm wagons, equipment, carriages and vehicles. An indoor bee hive depicts the social life of honeybees and a mineral cave pays homage to the caverns. A Country Store Gift Shop and a Virginia Wine Shop are all part of the Barn experience. Exhibits ranging from a 25-foot-

A 35-foot-tall treehouse sits inside one end of the building and is home to a family of five-foot-tall squirrels. “The tree house was part of the ‘Fantasy Award’ winning float in the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade and helps define a special children’s activity area in the Barn,” said Earl C. Hargrove, Jr., owner of Shenandoah Caverns. At the other end of the barn is a 24-foot rotating stage used for entertainment. The building is available for events such as wedding receptions, banquets, corporate meetings and parties and will host periodic concerts and shows. 50 Years of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival

B

efore thousands of people flocked to the vest-pocket village of Orkney Springs, VA, and kicked back with a picnic under the stars to hear blazing bluegrass licks, great gospel tunes, classic country songs, stunning symphonic melodies and more at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival, a relative handful gathered for small orchestras in a less idyllic setting. The year was 1963. Outside of the region’s county fairs, there was a decided lack of professional music presented in the Shenandoah Valley. A small group of people found this hard to accept and so formed the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. That August, the new group presented its first concert in the gym of Massanutten Military

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival remains instrumental in presenting great music in the Valley. The Festival’s grown and thrived for nearly 50 years by keeping one simple point in mind: It’s all about the music. Present high quality music in an intimate, up-close, pastoral setting on the grounds of the Shrine Mont Camp and Conference Center, and people from all around will come. We provide the music, nature provides the show. Since the Festival’s programming expanded beyond symphonic music in the early 1980s, performers who have dozens of Grammy, Tony and Emmy awards on their mantels have performed on the humble pavilion stage. Fleck, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Sam Bush, Ricky Skaggs, Travis Tritt, Ronnie Milsap and many more have created a tradition of providing a “wow experience just a few hours from the nation’s capital. All the while, the Festival has remained true to its beginnings as a presenter of symphonic music and to its role in music education. Every summer since 1979, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra has graced the stage at Orkney Springs. Knowing that music education starts at home, the Festival also presents at least one family performer each summer and over the years has given scholarships, recognized outstanding music students in the region and, with the help of the National Endowment for the Arts, created the Valley’s first public school strings program in Shenandoah County. The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival’s rich history is a testament to the public’s love of great music that it continues to bring to the Valley each summer and to the magic of its special setting.
