Ask Your

EBCA Board Members We asked your EBCA Board:

“If you could choose any career, other than what you have, what would you do?” We all have dream jobs/careers. What you dreamed of doing/being as a kid may be a very different thing than where life has taken you, or even where you would go provided the opportunity. We asked your EBCA Board members “If you could choose any career, other than what you have, what would you do?” Some of their responses may surprise, or at least enlighten you. “I would be a Nurse,” stated EBCA President, Gemma Houser. “I love helping people, and making a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis would be so rewarding.” Newly appointed EBCA Vice President, Jennifer Pinney, who also recently started a new job with Bosco Construction, stated that, if it was any career, she would open a salon.

Secretary Hailey Ayres went bold, stating she would be President of the United States. She would arguably do a much better job of it than some other individual who shall remain nameless. Treasurer and Golf Committee Co-chair, John Ehlert, would build on his passion. “I would scale-up my home brewing hobby and distribute fine quality beer throughout the region,” he said.

Board Member Kathleen Taylor shared her love of travel, saying “I would be a world-wide Travel Blogger”.

Board Member and Golf Committee Co-chair, Amaya Fine, went in an artistic direction. “In another life, I would love to be a ballerina,” she shared. Lisa Winn, who serves as the perennial Exhibitors Committee Chair for the Claims Conference of Northern California, shared her love for that type of endeavor. “I would be an Events Coordinator,” she said with a grin. No doubt. “Being a Motivational Speaker would be exciting,” said Lynna Harrison. “In my next life, I want to be a NYC Rockette Dancer,” she added.

New Board member, Eric Gacutan, said “I would become a Gym Owner”.

And, Bryan Harrison shared his love of music, discussed that industry a bit. “In a perfect world, I would love to be a full-time musician. To get paid well for doing what you love is the ultimate goal, right?” Given the careers all these dedicated board members currently enjoy, it’s fun to see where some of their passions lie. Who knows, maybe some of these dream jobs could one day morph into new careers.

Massengil Provides Tools for Dealing With Difficult People at June Luncheon Jane Massengil, LCSW, led a useful and informative class-style presentation at the June luncheon The June 14, 2017 luncheon meeting of the East Bay Claims Association offered attendees a great opportunity to learn some tools for personal space in dealing with difficult people. Licensed Registered Social Worker, Jane Massengil, LRSW, created a great open forum for the crowd to engage, and share their experiences. She was told that, in Claims work, the insured is unhappy and looking for someone to blame for their loss. Claimants can be difficult, and often have unreasonable expectations with regard to the handling of their claim. All of this adjusters and the support providers deal with on a daily basis. Ms. Massengil caught on to the fact that the position most of the folks in the audience are in regularly really could benefit from the information and tools she came to share. When we know we have to make an unpleasant telephone call, for example, “we want to run for the hills,” she stated. She explained she had four older brothers and understands running away. She then proceeded to offer up a tool to anyone could use to help draw a level of personal protect. Jane instructed the audience to “place the image of a flower in front of you an allow it to draw the attention energy being thrown at you,”. She also suggested to “pretend you are wrapped in Saran Wrap and no one can hurt you. We all want to feel good at the end of the day.” Drawing from the book Taming Your Gremlins, Massengil stated “We don’t love conflict. We love peace.” Whether working with contentious claimants, fellow workers/ bosses, or even personal relationships, she led the group through what amounted to a relaxation, or even meditiation, process, whereby each participant could find their own separation and truth outside of any issues the person with whom they might be faced may have. “Peace/inner contentment is something we all have within us,” she said. She shared what she called “the tool of Awareness”. Leading the group through an informal meditation of sorts, Ms. Massengil demonstrated with the interactivity how much dealing with others can have as much to do with how we are within ourselves. Jane Massengil’s presentation served more as a session that was very well received, with numerous people expressing their pleasure with the information presented.

June guest speaker: Life Coach, Jane Massengil (above left); and EBCA Program Chair Debra Hall-Jalen.

EBCA Pres, Gemma Houser, conducts the June door prize drawing.

Welcome back Gail D’Atri, with Alliant, above center, who returned to an EBCA meeting for the first time in several years. L-R: EBCA Treasurer, John Ehlert; Kevin Morgan, Gail, Ed Melgoza; Lisa Schwichenberg (partially hidden from view) and Liza Wisecarver, Brightleaf Textile Rest; Lisa Schwichtenberg, EBCA Secretary Hailey Ayres. Belfor; and Ed Melgoza, of Wingard Construction.

June 21, 2017 – Sacramento, CA DH Construction, out of Sacramento, has been selected by the U.S. Small Business Administration (Sacramento District Office) as the 2017 “Contractor of the Year”. The final decision was made in Washington DC, after two qualifying rounds were processed locally to narrow the field from the largest number of nominees ever received in the history of the awards. Criteria for selection included contributions to the community in addi-

tion to professional success. Founding Partner Ralph Dinwiddie received his California General Contractor’s license in 1978. He established DH Construction in 1992, choosing to specialize in insurance claim-related reconstruction after experiencing the strong emotional impact often connected to this type of project. “Destruction of their home has caused grown men to openly weep in his arms,” he said. Realizing he could achieve powerful positive outcomes,

Wall fire residents may be eligible for reimbursement for evacuation costs Department of Insurance helping consumers at Local Assistance Center BUTTE, Calif. - The California Department of Insurance announced July 12, 2017 that thousands of Butte County residents affected by the Wall fire may be eligible for reimbursement through their homeowner and renter insurance for additional living expenses incurred due to the mandatory evacuation orders with no deductible requirement. Many homeowners are unaware that their insurance policies may cover additional living expenses incurred as a result of damage caused by fire or mandatory evacuation, allowing consumers to focus their attention on recovery. The coverage typically includes food and housing costs, furniture rental, relocation and storage, and extra transportation expenses. Policy provisions, including deductibles, vary by company. Consumers should check with their insurer regarding any limitations that may apply to the coverage.

"It can be financially and emotionally draining for the individuals and families forced to evacuate during a fire," said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. "We want homeowners to know what their insurance policy may cover to help ease the financial burden a mandatory evacuation may cause." Consumer service staff are working with evacuees and fire victims at the local assistance center answering questions on coverage, offering tips as consumers begin to think about returning to their property, and providing information about potential scams that can occur after a disaster. "Department staff will remain at the local assistance center and be available by phone to assist victims of the Wall fire," added Jones. ###
