the Irish singer Róisín Murphy when he visited her in her home in London. Their conversation ranges from domesticity (Murphy recently became a mother and Coppens thinks she should do something about her garden) to the quest for balance. Hats for the royal family, for hipsters, for distinguished ladies, and for conceptual exhibitions – sometimes he is at his wits’ end. The curator Pieter Van Bogaert explains that confusion or doubt by the fact that Coppens is not a fashion, but an accessory designer: he doesn’t produce a complete world, but a hat, a shawl, or a tie that puts the finishing touch to an outfit. Alternating text with large photographs, “Work”, too, is a handsome book to leaf through. The text offers some interesting reflections on career and success, without coming across as ponderous. The e-mail exchanges with the journalist Agnes Goyvaerts (of the Flemish daily De Morgen), in which he gives short answers to all her questions, contain some interesting titbits of information. It is not easy to sum up Homework in a single sentence. It is best described in the words of Christophe Coppens himself as a sort of catharsis, the book of his own private mid-life crisis. NL ❙ De radio en de hitlijsten zijn momenteel gek op jonge vrouwen, dus blijft ook Stockholm zijn dochters uitzenden. Na Lykke Li, Robyn en andere Nina Kinerts is Jennie Abrahamson het nieuwste Zweedse exportproduct. The sound of your beating heart verschijnt op haar eigen label, maar de vraag is hoelang het nog zal duren voor de grote platenfirma’s voor haar deur staan. Grootste troef is haar bijzonder radiovriendelijke geluid, verleidelijk verpakt in feilloos geproducete popsongs en ballades, die hoewel ze commercieel klinken een grote eigenheid uitstralen. Na een korte instrumentale intro steekt het album fris van wal met ‘Wolf hour’ en de single ‘Hard to come by’, twee aanstekelijke, speelse poptracks, à la The Cardigans. Abrahamson laat haar fluwelen stemgeluid, dat wat weg heeft van de jonge Kate Bush, rondtollen in een bont geluidspalet met strijkers en synths. Vooral de ritmes zitten goed, en haar stem ontroert. Ze kleurt er de weemoed, die ze heeft meegebracht uit het hoge, koude Noorden, opvallend warm mee in. Naar het einde van het album wordt de originele lichtheid ingeruild voor een soms iets te zwaar op de hand liggende sfeer, maar dan heeft haar talent ons al overtuigd. (TP)
NL ❙ “Thanks to the ones I love and have loved, for blooming, breaking, broken en mended hearts.” Elke De Mey is graag oprecht. Op de achterkant van haar titelloze debuut-ep. In haar miniatuurliedjes. De 24-jarige zangeres uit het Gentse treedt al een tijdje op onder het pseudoniem Love Like Birds en vond de tijd rijp voor een tussenstand. Resultaat: vijf songs, opgenomen met de hulp van Jinte Deprez (Balthazar) en Gertjan Van Hellemont (The Bony King of Nowhere) en uitgebracht in eigen beheer, zoals het haar slaapkamerfolkpop het best betaamt. Wij beschikken over nummer 376 van de 500 handgenummerde exemplaren en horen daarop een warme hese stem, die het aandurft nog echt unplugged te zijn. Met vaak alleen wat ruis en haar eigen gitaargetokkel op de achtergrond hoor je elke snik van haar dromerige stem. Behoorlijk confronterend soms. Op ‘Heavy heart’ weent ze een “salty sweater full of tears”. Op ‘Sailorboy’, dat onder een verdacht vrolijk gesternte van start gaat, inclusief tamboerijn en handgeklap, blijkt ze eens te meer afscheid te nemen van een oude geliefde. En ook elders raakt dit meeslepende debuut een gevoelige snaar met een zweem van mysterie en veel ingetogen emoties. (TP)
