It is wonderful to once again welcome back the FEIBP Congress after a two-year hiatus. The 62nd edition of the Congress is set for September 21-24 at the Hotel Grandior Prague and it will be exciting to get a take on the buzz around the European brush and paint products community. The up-anddown business roller coaster continues as inflation soared through the summer and logistics challenges persist for certain regions. It will be interesting to hear how the European manufacturers are managing through those challenges in addition to the opportunities that they will be focused on for the future. Personally, I will be most excited to learn about the products vying for the FEIBP Innovation Award. With a family of five, no more than five or six months will go by without a new brush or paint application product arriving in our house. My reaction is always the same, “Hey, you should have told me you needed a twisted-in-wire brush … I could have reached out to one of our advertisers for their recommendation.”

The response is usually something like, “Can you not nerd out on me here? I just need something to clean out my metal straws.”

Fair enough. But quite often the brush products that come in our door offer a fresh take on a current application that is at least new to me and features a new approach to make some chore a little easier to handle. Regular consumers take those innovations for granted and innovation awards are a great way to showcase advances and also promote the vital nature of brushware products in everyday life. An offshoot of that sentiment is the enjoyment of the arts and yes, brushes play many roles in the creation of art. For this issue, we are happy to feature the Best Watercolor Brushes for 2022 as recommended by some of our top artist brush manufacturers. Brushware always endeavors to highlight the broad range of brush applications and the annual artist brush special is our way to expand on that coverage. I feel that a brush magazine should show off the industry products and we hope to continue with this series as we look to shine the spotlight on specific segments of paintbrushes, industrial brushes, cosmetic brushes, dental brushes, brooms, cleaning brushes and much more in future issues.

TV Interview On Inflation and Supply Chain Impact For Gordon Brush

For more than 80 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.

ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes of the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity.

BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS -FINE FILAMENTS

The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex®(nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox®(nylon 610) . Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio

HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS -TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS

DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair.

WAY

EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS –ABRASIVE FILAMENTS

Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need.

When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.

In order to ensure that the Code of Practice and Accreditation Schemes give buyers of cleaning and hygiene products the guarantees they need, the CHSA invests in a rigorous auditing process, led by an independent inspector. An experienced quality assurance professional, the CHSA inspector has worked with the British Standards Institute (BSI) and the European Standards Committee.

The CHSA’s Accreditation Schemes for Manufacturers of paper-based and woven products, plastic-based products, cotton-based products, cleaning and hygiene chemicals and general manufacturers, and the Accredited Distributor Scheme gives buyers the certainty that “what’s on the box is what’s in the box.” Buyers simply need to look for the Accreditation Scheme logos: Our Standards, Your Guarantee. Many end-users already know the benefits offered by the accreditation schemes. They demand their manufacturers and distributors provide CHSA-accredited products and adhere to the ethical principles that underpin the schemes and the CHSA’s tough Code of Practice.

Start by exploring and assessing which functionality would provide the most value to your organization. ERP systems support your order-to-delivery cycle, which is essential to successfully fulfilling your sales order demand, improving delivery performance and reducing lead times. ERP functionality also supports the procure-to-pay cycle, which is key to purchasing the right materials to arrive at the right place at the right time to support manufacturing and most efficiently manage inventory levels. Almost every client can improve upon the plan to produce cycle, which can achieve three objectives simultaneously – improved customer service, increased efficiencies and accelerated working capital.

As easy as it might be to get caught up in fads and trends, take a step back when assessing where to focus efforts. Understand your customer requirements and business requirements. Which functionality will provide the greatest benefit to your business? Which software functionality will best position you for growth?

UsingAndersonERP Plus Related Technologies to Automate, Digitize and Thrive

By Lisa

As manufacturers focus on the expanded use of ERP and related technologies, they can create unique value for customers and in their own supply chain. Taking it a step further, to thrive during these inflationary times, it is important to automate, digitize, reduce repetitive labor requirements, increase efficiencies and standardize so that more can be achieved with less. Create value by better utilizing your already-existing ERP asset and engaging your people in solutions and progress.

Beyond base ERP, there are many technologies that support the customer such as customer relationship management (CRM), sales forecasting and e-commerce. Additionally, there are software options to automate and digitize for increased efficiencies and improved quality standards such as the use of barcoding, RFID (radio frequency identification), robotics, autonomous vehicles, digital twins and automated storage and retrieval systems. Critically important are software options to aid in analyzing and predicting data such as business intelligence (BI), artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics.

In today’s inflationary and supply chain disrupted business environment, manufacturers need to automate and digitize to “do more with less” and thrive during these volatile times. One important way to achieve this goal is to further leverage your ERP system where it will make a difference. No matter which ERP system you use or how archaic, there will be opportunities to use additional functionality. In 30 years of working with manufacturers, I haven’t had one example of a client that couldn’t benefit by expanding the use of ERP. Beyond customer, profit and cash flow benefits, ERP systems can help you automate the repetitive and mundane. The people benefit. Turning jobs from repetitive and injuryprone to exception-based with opportunities for learning and development can engage people’s interest. With the shortage of talent as the number one issue for top executives, it is worth investing in the expanded use of ERP.

supply CHAIN Manufacturers utilize less than 20% of the full functionality of their ERP systems. But the key question is, why does it matter?

For example, an ERP system assessment for a building products manufacturer revealed they might benefit from advanced functionality such as available to promise (ATP) and advanced replenishment planning methods. But the bigger discovery was that they could benefit greatly by further leveraging their planning systems to increase OTIF (on-time-in-full) and add value to their service. By focusing on this simple objective, the sales team was able to grow the business during times of significant volatility and uncertainty.

Zizkov Television Tower Getting a lay of the land never hurts. Ensure you get a good vantage point by visiting Zizkov Television Tower. At 216 meters (709 feet), three levels create a high-altitude urban viewing experience incorporating drinks and food. It’s up to the visitor where they want to start or how high they want to go. The observatory sits at 93 meters and is open from 9:00 a.m. until midnight. At 66 meters, 66 Bistro provides a level-up dining opportunity. For the thrill seeker, traveling 27 meters above to OBLACA restaurant offers unrivaled views of Prague. Attendees who want to visit should know that OBLACA is closed Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 5:00 p.m. If heights aren’t appealing, stopping by Zizkov is still advisable. Miminoo is a garden-level restaurant where visitors can take in the feat of architecture without leaving solid ground. While the view from Miminoo isn’t physically elevated, there’s an opportunity to elevate culturally by seeing the work of Czech sculptor David Cerny. Scaling the columns of Zizkova, Miminka (babies in English) is a series of 11.5 feet and 8.5 feet tall fiberglass sculptures of babies crawling on the structure. The sculptures were introduced in 2000 and permanently affixed several years later.

Prague Castle and Surrounding Area

An afternoon or an hour around Prague Castle offers the opportunity to be steeped in Prague’s history throughout the centuries. Partners of the Congress attendees will enjoy a tour of Prague Castle as part of their itinerary on Thursday, September 22. The castle is believed to have been built in 880, and as a recognized UNESCO site, it is also the world’s largest castle complex at 70,000 m2. Touring Prague Castle transports visitors through time, starting with the remains of 10th-century Romanesque buildings and observing the modifications to the Gothic style in the 14th century and beyond.

Attendees should be aware that the security line checkpoints for access to Prague Castle can be long, so it’s essential to plan accordingly. The official recommendation from our Prague source indicates that if you plan a trip to Prague Castle, approaching from the west offers more sightseeing opportunities before arriving at the Jeleni Prikop entrance to the castle or, rather, Stag Moat. Deer had been seen living in the ravine up to the 18th century. The minor natural feature creates a ceremonious entrance to Prague Castle.

Prague is comprised of 10 municipal districts and 112 cadastral areas. Brushware Magazine asked counterparts in Prague what makes the area around the Congress this year exciting for attendees who may want to wander. We’ve acquired the inside scoop on nearby palate experiences that shouldn’t be missed, day trips that will stick with the adventurer for a lifetime, and afternoon hangs that make unwinding easy.

The 216 meter tall Prague TV Tower Zizkov is one of the most impressive sights of Prague. The “babies” by artist David Černý have populated the pillars of the Prague TV tower since 2000. Photo by Thomas Demarczyk.

The approach to Prague Castle or the immediate vicinity holds several treasures of the city that make it an area worth wandering in for a bit. A walk down Novy Svet will keep feet moving and eyes wandering with details popping from the residential homes that showcase unique design features and artistic embellishments for the idle passersby. Historically the street doesn’t represent wealth and opulence and through years it was mainly inhabited by artists and tradespeople in the employ of the nearby castle over time. During the communism era, artists created in this area despite the oppression and their work can still be seen. Kavarna Novy Set is a small café on the street with a recommended cup of coffee from our source, perfect fuel for the walk.

When it’s time to get off the street, standout structures in the area worth a visit include Strahov Monastery, Loreto, and Charles Bridge museums. Strahov monastery houses an incredible collection of medieval manuscripts, maps and globes. The painted vaulted ceilings of the library have seen multiple raids over centuries, but the accumulation of knowledge withstood, was maintained and numbers in the thousands today. Loreto is a Baroque church that houses liturgical objects and votive gifts from the 16th to the 18th century, with rotating exhibitions featured through out the Walkingyear.toor from the Prague Castle area, Charles Bridge is the oldest stone bridge in the city, and a celebrated route over Prague’s river, The Vltava. Pass along the Royal Route, following kings’ steps over centuries. Stop by the Charles Bridge Museum housed in the Crusader’s original hospital and Church of the Holy Spirit.

Wenceslas Square originated in the 14th century and has been the site of significant events throughout Prague’s history. The National Museum is on the square and offers a guided experience of the Czech people and their country from the 8th century onward. Old Town Square was built in the 13th century and provides more wide-open space to take in the surroundings while ambling idly. Palladium Shopping Center is near both public squares and provides a high-end shopping experience. Electronics, clothing and health and beauty products are some of what can be found here in case something is missing from the trip.

Squares,

to reconvene after the long intermission. A full itinerary over three days will keep attendees busy, but the Congress’ location offers a chance to get out and see the city for themselves without straining. Be mindful while out and about, either solo or in a group. According to our source, locations like the Absinthe Museum should be overlooked and recognized as tourist traps; these museums lack substance and value. Time is better spent getting over to Prague Castle district or the National Museum to soak in the city and country’s history. Avoid Ve Smeckach near the National Museum and Wenceslas Square; the street is mainly clubs and brothels where little good happens. Get outside effortlessly and visit Reigrovy Sady for a walk in the sun and stop in the beer garden. Cross the Charles Bridge to another century and visit sacred grounds to witness breathtaking collections of historical objects and art. Dive into the Prague party experience on Dlouha Street, or go down to Zizkov Television tower to see the city from a seat of relative quiet compared to the ground level.

For the night warrior, Prague has no shortage of opportunities to have a late evening out. Starting on Dlouah Street is a safe bet as it has the most bars. It is also conveniently located a few blocks from where the congress is being held — top recommendations in the area; Mojito Cafe, Aloha, Hangar and James Dean.

WATERCOLORBESTBRUSHES

Choosing the right brush for watercolor can be challenging, but we asked the top Brushware artist brush manufacturers to present their best options. Here is your list of the best watercolor brushes for 2022.

Watercolor painting has long been considered one of the top mediums for creative art. The semi-transparent look of watercolor allows the paper to give a painting a natural luminosity. As a fast-drying medium, the artist must work quickly as they blend colors while managing the water balance. That sense of urgency can create spontaneous and beautiful results. However, that balance and the overall delicacy of the medium requires the artist to wield a top-quality brush. For watercolor brushes, the most important characteristic is how well it holds water. Traditionally, natural sable hair brushes have been considered the top choice, but synthetic brushes are making inroads. The key strength that artists cite for sable is the water holding strength, but synthetics offer a vegan-friendly alternative at a more affordable price.

Watercolor paint brushes come in a variety of shapes, sizes and hair types. Pure Red Sable brushes are some of the best and most versatile for water coloring. As with most kinds of art supplies, watercolor paintbrushes ultimately come down to personal preference. The choice rests on the watercolor techniques you like to use, how much you’re willing to spend, and how certain brushes feel in your hand. Round brushes are the most versatile and widely used brush for watercolor painting. Their shape makes them suitable for small details and delicate lines, but also for broader strokes and washes. Watercolor brushes are optimized to work well with the fluidity and delicacy of watercolor paints and techniques. A good watercolor brush should not shed more than a couple of hairs and should balance well in the hand; the handle should not feel too fat. The brush should be durable, and the handle should not come loose at the ferrule. Lastly, there be minimally warping or swelling of the wood over long periods of soaking. The brush must also have a quality called “snap,” which allows the brush to respond and rebound quickly as the amount of downward pressure applied to it on the surface of the paper is varied. Snap refers to the action of the damp brush hairs snapping upright after they are pulled down and sideways to the handle. This is most important, for this resiliency allows the artist to create a variety of paint widths within the same stroke of the brush, sometimes referred to as “action.” A brush with no snap bends and does not rebound at all. This is not a good watercolor brush to use — it has no action.

www.brushwaremag.com | 27

Watercolor painting is delicate and unforgiving in nature, which is why using the best watercolor brushes can help you work within the medium and help you deliver exceptional, beautiful results. A good watercolor brush should do at least one fundamental thing: hold water well. Watercolor brushes made of synthetic hair do a fine job, but those with natural hairs have much better liquid-holding capacity. Watercolor brushes have soft bristles that can be easily moved around the page. This is due to their fibrous anatomies, which excel at picking up and retaining water for lengths of time. They also tend to feel more like extensions of the artist’s hand since they’re more sensitive to shifts in pressure.

The ferrule is generally metal and connects the brush to the handle, while also serving as a barrier to protect the handle from any water held in the brush belly.

The Handle Hardwood handles are always preferred by watercolor artists, but the key to a good handle is finding an option that is durable and feels comfortable in the artists hand.

The tip of brush is where the bristles actually apply the paint to the paper. There are many options for the shape of the tip ranging from a fine point to fanned, with the options providing various effects.

Belly Above the tip is the belly, where the brush head holds the water and paint. The amount of water it will hold directly affects the artist’s stroke.

Conventional wisdom has always said that Natural Hair brushes give the artist the best results – but times have changed and so has conventional wisdom. The right synthetics in the right shapes can open up a whole new world of possibilities for the artist. Combine the perfect synthetic with fine craftsmanship and you have a brush that surpasses the original. That’s exactly what F.M. Brush has done with the Faux Squirrel Collection. Master Brush Makers use only synthetic that best matches natural hair in color, quality, strength and flag. Each brush is handcrafted to exacting specifications the same specifications used on natural hair brushes.

• KOLINEX brushes come to a needle-sharp point due to the highly tapered filaments and show a great shape retention even under extensive use

KOLINEX vs. Natural Kolinsky / Sable KOLINEX brushes are 100% vegan

• Due to the perfect imitation of the “belly shape” and the high density of the brush body, KOLINEX brushes have a nearly identically superb paint holding capacity as natural Kolinsky / sable hair brushes

• KOLINEX brushes are easy to clean and have a very good chemical resistance

• KOLINEX brushes are available in every possible size and shape

Zahn’s 2022 recommendation is the Meisterklasse Kolinex series, The vegan, ecological and powerful alternative to natural Kolinsky and sable hair. The Meisterklasse Kolinex hair filament is made of high-quality PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) with superior lifetime and resistance. The individual filaments are highly tapered in order to receive a perfectly pointed brush shape. Additionally, the filaments are slightly crimped in order to imitate the natural inhomogeneity of Kolinsky hair. Single brush sizes and shapes are made of individually composed blends of different hair diameters (e.g. 0.07mm, 0.10mm, 0.12mm) in order to obtain a maximum density of the brush body.

• KOLINEX brushes have a longer lifetime because of high-quality PBT filament

www.brushwaremag.com | 31

• KOLINEX brushes work with all kind of painting media

The Meisterklasse Kolinex series imitates the typical “belly shape” of a Kolinsky hair brush through the optimal composition of different lengths and crimping positions of the individual filaments.

Founded in 1907 and located in Bechhofen, Germany, with 110 employees, Zahn Unique Brushes manufactures high-quality synthetic brushes for private label distribution. So, while artists may not know the name, there’s a strong chance they’ve come across a Zahn brush under one of the many brand names as the company sells approximately 5.2 million artist brushes per year (8.6 million overall brushes). The brush maker says the private label option allows the company to focus on producing top-quality brushes instead of distribution and consumer marketing.

Zahn Unique Brushes: Meisterklasse Kolinex

• The elasticity and spring of KOLINEX brushes is considerably higher

• KOLINEX brushes offer a much better costperformance ratio than natural Kolinsky / sable hair brushes

The July ISM® Report On Business® issued a PMI reading of 52.8 percent for US manufacturers which was down from the June figure of 53.0 percent. This continued an overall downward trend for the US manufacturing index that dates back to October 2021. However, the reading meant the US sector stayed above the 50 percent line for the 26th straight month.

“Inflation is slowing down business. Overstock of raw materials due to prior supply chain issues and slowing orders.”

“Our markets are still holding up; however, I believe a slowdown is coming. We are cautious about going out too far with orders. Also, I believe the general market is in the beginnings of a recession.” Fabricated Metal Products

“Current order books are full, but there have been signs of a slowdown beginning in the fourth quarter.”

India, China and the UK also register above 50 percent for manufacturing PMI

Employment activity remained strongly positive in spite of the uncertainty with new order rates,” says Timothy R. Fiore, Chair of the ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.

US Manufacturing PMI Stays in Growth Territory

“Manufacturing performed well for the 26th straight month. There are signs of new order rates softening — cited in 16 percent of general comments, compared to 17 percent in June — as panelists are increasingly concerned about excessive inventories and continuing record-high lead times.

Price expansion eased dramatically in July, but instability in global energy markets continues. Sentiment remained optimistic regarding demand, with six positive growth comments for every cautious comment. Panelists are now expressing concern about a softening in the economy, as the contraction in new order rates was tied to anxiety about excess inventory in the supply chain.

ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers)

Plastics and Rubber Products

“Slight improvement projected for our business for the next quarter.”Primary Metals

“Continuing delivery and staffing issues have eaten away the bottom line.” Textile Mills moving current direction.

*Number of months

economic DASHBOARD

Transportation Equipment “Growing inflation is pushing a stronger narrative around pending recession concerns. Many customers appear to be pulling back on orders in an effort to reduce inventories.”

“Material extended lead times still affecting business, and the challenging labor market is a huge factor too. Backlog is healthy; we just cannot deliver to customers due to material issues.” Computer and Electronic Products

“New order entry has slowed down slightly; however, logistical issues have yet to improve. Long lead times for materials and labor shortages are still a major problem.”Machinery

“All markets are extremely busy but face headwinds that will eventually take a toll. Lead times and costs make large projects very challenging to budget, plan and execute. Routine work is also very difficult.” Nonmetallic Mineral Products

The ISM report says the US manufacturing sector continues expanding, but at a slightly slower rate compared to July as new order rates continue to contract, supplier deliveries improve and prices soften to acceptable levels. According to survey comments, companies continue to hire at strong rates, with few indications of layoffs, hiring freezes or headcount reduction through attrition. Panelists reported higher rates of quits, reversing June’s positive trend.

Chemical Products “Chip shortages remain; however, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China are presenting even worse supply issues.”

UNITED KINGDOM: The S&P Global/ CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI was reported at 52.1 percent for July. The new figure represented the lowest mark since June 2020 and continued a downward trend that started in June 2021. Output decreased due to weaker demand, challenges with component supplies and transportation issues. New orders fell as the rising cost of living has had an impact in addition to rising concerns about the economy. Export orders from Europe, the US and China all declined, but employment rose and backlogs of work trended downward. Business outlook remained near the 24-month low set in June.

CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.4 percent for the month of July. The slip from June’s mark of 51.7 percent is still well above the recent low of 46.0 set in April. The setback was attributed to continued COVID-19 lockdowns and shortages of electricity. Output and new order growth slowed and jobs decreased for a fourth straight month. Despite some normalcy in June, delivery times for suppliers again extended in July due to stock and labor shortages from the lockdowns. Input costs decreased and output pricing reduced slightly as demand softened. Business outlook was weaker.

GERMANY: The S&P Global/ME Germany Manufacturing PMI for Germany was reported at 49.3 percent for July to mark the first contraction in factory activity since June 2020. New orders hit a two-year low based on a reduction in investment spending, higher prices, increased stock levels for customers and ongoing supply chain challenges. Production levels declined and goods producers decreased purchasing activity for the first time since 2020 as inventories increased sharply. The decrease in demand reduced supply chain pressure which eased cost inflation and output prices.

ITALY: S&P Global reported a 48.5 percent manufacturing PMI for Italian manufacturers for the month of July — a sharp fall from the 50.9 June reading. Reduced demand and rising cost inflation led to a strong decrease in manufacturing activity for Italy. Exports decreased to their lowest level in 26 months. Employment also slowed as backlogs of work declined. Cost inflation decreased as well as output prices. Outlook remains negative.
