Congratulations to Mrs. Kelsy King, a recent graduate of Brunswick Community College’s Gateway to Employment & Academic Readiness (GEAR) Program. After encouragement from her family, which Kelsy describes as “very large and supportive,” Kelsy decided to earn her high school equivalency diploma at BCC. She enrolled in the GEAR program in March of 2021. She quickly passed all the exams except math, a subject area with which many students struggle. After several unsuccessful attempts at the math test, Kelsy almost gave up. But with the support of her family and the dedication and expertise of the HSE math instructors and staff of the GEAR program, Kelsy was able to pass her math exam and graduate in September of this year. Earning her high school equivalency made an immediate impact on Kelsy’s future. Since earning her diploma, she has obtained a position working for Brunswick County Schools.
