Former Association Officer Dies

Dr. John Asaro

JOHN P. ASARO, D.D.S., M.A., secretary-treasurer of the Dental Society of the State of New York (now, NYSDA) from 2003 to 2007, died May 24 at the Silverado Excondido Memory Care Community in California, where he had lived since 2015. The immediate cause of his death was COVID-19.

A periodontist, Dr. Asaro practiced in the Town of Tonawanda, Erie County, for over 30 years. In that time, he was active at all three levels of organized dentistry, as president of the Eighth District Dental Society, member of the Dental Society Board of Governors, chair of the Society Council on Insurance and delegate to the ADA House for 15 years. Dr. Asaro was an active member also of the American Academy of Periodontology, holding a variety of positions, including trustee.

His academic credentials included clinical assistant professor in the postdoctoral periodontics clinical advanced education program and predoctoral periodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

In 2014, he was honored by NYSDA as recipient of the Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Asaro was notable as well for his extracurricular activities. He was an avid fly fisherman, an official for the U.S. Cycling Federation, a motorcyclist, the owner of six Jack Russell Terriers, which he entered in dog agility trials across the Northeast, and an accomplished chef.

Dr. Asaro was a graduate of Georgetown University and SUNY Buffalo. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Eileen; daughter, Tricia, and son, Christopher; and two grandchildren. NYSDA Endorses OnPay as Preferred Payroll Provider

It’s an Honor

Chad P. Gehani

ADA President and past NYSDA President Chad P. Gehani added to his long list of honors and accomplishments in May when he was named an honorary member of the Hispanic Dental Association. Dr. Gehani was recognized for his support of HDA over the past years. He was previously honored by the New York Chapter of HDA.

Academy Honors New York State Dentist

MARC W. HERMAN, D.D.S., general practitioner from Woodbury, Nassau County, was awarded the Kathleen Uebel Leadership Award by The American Academy of Dental Practice (AADP). It is AADP’s highest honor.

Dr. Herman is a past president of AADP. He has filled many other roles within the organization, including on the Membership Committee, Board of Directors, secretary, treasurer, program chair, and as a member of the AADP Applied Strategic Planning Committee.

In June, Dr. Herman was named Attending of the Year by the residents at North Shore University Hospital-Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Hofstra School of Medicine, Department of Dental Medicine. A 40-year volunteer attending, he serves as chief, Division of Practice Administration; chief, Division of Orofacial Pain (TMJ); chief, Division of General Dentistry; chief, Division of Medical Ethics; and chief, Division of Sports Medicine/Dental Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Herman has practiced dentistry in the same location in Woodbury for 40 years. His practice specializes in restorative, implant and cosmetic dentistry. He currently teaches “How to Inhibit and Understand and Mitigate the COVID-19 Virus” and “Aerosols in the Dental Office.”
