BUSF Fundraising Challenges During fiscal year 2012 a number of challenges were issued by alumni, parents, and anonymous donors. Harkening back to their days of competing for Brown as student-athletes, the alumni—as well as parents and friends—stepped up to the plate and achieved each of the following challenges, raising more than $485,000 in challenge funds for Brown Athletics.

Women’s Lacrosse - 40K in 40 Days

Berylson Football Challenge

The Brown Women’s Lacrosse program was challenged by an anonymous donor to raise $40K in 40 days (running from November 22—Dec 31). The challenge was a dollarfor-dollar matching gift challenge. Including the challenge donor funds, alumnae, parents, and friends raised $47,378 from 129 donors. Challenge met and exceeded!

The Brown football community was challenged by John Berylson ’75 to raise $100,00 for Brown Football. The challenge was a dollar-for-dollar matching gift challenge and ran from December 1, 2011—June 30, 2012. The total challenge money raised from 311 alumni, parents, and friends of Brown Football was $210,480. The challenge helped the Brown football community reach their annual use goal for the first time in more than four years.

Women’s Squash Alumnae 29% Partcipation in 29 Days

A challenge was offered by Alexander Moskwa and Elaine Elliott-Moskwa P’15 to reach 29% participation from women’s squash alumnae in the 29 days of February. The results were amazing. 51 alumnae gave during the 29 days of the challenge and the women’s squash program was able to reach 30.5% alumnae participation. A total of $8,660 was raised from alumnae and with the additional $10,000 in earned challenge funds the program finished off the month at $18,660!

Men’s Crew Parents An anonymous parent presented the current Brown Men’s Crew parents with a challenge to raise $50,000 by June 30th. If the total was reached, this generous donor committed to donating an additional $25,000 for operational and capital needs for the program. At year’s end, the current men’s crew parents raised a total of $60,894 from 35 families to reach 65% participation—well exceeding their initial goal and earning the $25,000 in challenge money.

Mundt-Mullen Track & Field Challenge

Men’s Water Polo Alumni Challenge

Fiscal year 2012 marks the second year of a three-year challenge put forth by Kevin Mundt ’76, P’11 and Fergal Mullen ’89 to the Brown Track and Field/Cross Country community in hopes of increasing alumni/ae support. The overall goal of the Mundt-Mullen Challenge is to raise $100,000 in each of the three years with $50,000 coming from alumni/ae, parents and friends of the program and $50,000 being matched by the Challengers. FY’12 was an incredibly successful year. The program reached and exceeded its $100,000 goal by raising $110,102 with an alumni/ae participation rate of 15%.

The Men’s Water Polo alumni were challenged by an anonymous supporter to reach an alumni participation rate of 25%, which equaled 70 donors in total. If the challenge was met, $25,000 would be released to the program’s endowment fund. Water Polo alumni were up for the challenge as they not only met the target, but exceeded it by getting to 36% participation! For fiscal year 2012, the Men’s Water Polo alumni had the highest participation level of any program at Brown. Nick Deaver ’14

NCAA APR RANKINGS

Smarter Than The Average Bear! Brown University ranks second nationally in 2012 NCAA Division I APR rankings. For the second-straight year, Brown University ranked second in the nation out of 335 NCAA Division I schools in Academic Progress Rate (APR). Bruno posted an overall APR of 995, with 20 teams being honored with Public Recognition Awards and 14 of those teams earning perfect 1,000-point scores. The Ivy League dominated the top four spots with Dartmouth leading the nation with 23 team honors, Harvard finishing third with 18, and Penn and Yale tying three other schools for fourth with 17. The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face penalties, such as scholarship losses, restrictions on practice and competition and postseason bans.

Three former student-athletes participated at the 2012 London Olympics this summer. Jimmy Pedro ’94 (wrestling) coached USA’s Judo team, Nikola Stojic ’97 competed in the men’s pair rowing event for Serbia, and Craig Kinley ’11 competed in the javelin for the USA. The Brown Sports Foundation would like to congratulate all three for representing their countries and Brown on such a prestigious stage.

Both the Brown Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs were recognized with the ITA All-Academic Team Award for having a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above. Each team also had seven student-athletes earn Scholar-Athlete status. On June 1, Brown University and new athletic director Jack Hayes ushered in a new era for Brown Men’s Basketball with the announcement of Mike Martin ’04 as the new head coach. A four-year starter at Brown, Martin was part of the winningest class in Bears’ basketball history and is now responsible for building the program back up. “I’m honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to be the head coach at Brown, a school at which I have so many fond memories,” said Martin. “I am anxious to start working to improve our program. I believe strongly in all we have to offer at Brown and am eager to connect

with all the current players, Brown alumni, fans, and supporters.” Martin’s coaching career began at Brown in 2005 as an assistant on Glen Miller’s staff. He then followed Miller to Penn in 2006, where he has worked until returning to his alma mater. “Mike Martin will bring tremendous energy, enthusiasm, and leadership to the Brown Basketball program,” said Hayes. “His experience in the Ivy League as both a successful student-athlete and coach has prepared him for this opportunity. MEN’S SOCCER/WRESTLING

Brown University Sports Foundation

A Chance To Follow My Dream by T.J. Popolizio ’12

A former Men’s Soccer and Wrestling student-athlete reflects on his four years at Brown University. Growing up, I always wanted to see how far athletics could take me. Wrestling was something engrained into my family dynamic and soccer was embedded into the culture of my hometown. As I began the college application process, I thought I would have to choose one sport or the other, and I went with soccer. However, by my senior year I had only been contacted by a few schools and my dream of playing soccer at a high level was dwindling. It was at this point that Dave Amato and John Clark began to recruit me to wrestle at Brown. The thought of attending such a prestigious university had hardly crossed my mind and I was taken aback by the reality of the situation—I was going to be an Ivy League athlete. Even more poignantly, Mike Noonan offered me a chance to walk on the soccer team if I agreed to wrestle. The best of both worlds I always thought. I made a promise to myself freshmen year that if I made the soccer team, I would stay committed to both programs. I was able to walk on to the Brown Soccer program, and maintain my commitment to the wrestling program for the last four years, something I am truly proud of, and something I couldn’t have done without so much support. The reality of college athletics is not

it was that dream. It was being part of something special. Competing against Cornell and Lehigh wrestling. 5,000 silent UConn fans and 200 wild Brown ones, as we pulled a stunning upset in the 2011 NCAA tournament. Making two sets of friends that I will never forget. The Fairfield miracle, coming back from a 2-0 deficit in ten minutes. Saving the wrestling program. Going from a walk-on to All-Ivy. Winning an Ivy title, and appearing in back-to-back Sweet Sixteens. Brown Athletics gave me a chance to follow my dream. These have been four of the most incredible years of my life, as well as four of the most challenging— filled with more memories and emotions than I know what to do with. It has been the most incredible feeling to come into an environment where success was always doubted and to reach many of my goals with the people I have learned to care for. It has been the most amazing experience. And for that, I’d like to thank my family, coaches, the athletic staff, and my friends and teammates for helping me have such an amazing experience. My team’s success has opened many doors going forward and I will be using a final year of eligibility next year at Indiana playing soccer and starting my MBA, but my heart is always Bruno. I will never forget those of you who never gave up on me as an athlete and person. Thank you for it all. T.J. Popolizio ’12 was a four-year member of both Men’s Soccer and Wrestling.

always glorious. The last four years have mostly been long days and lost weekends. It has been a constant struggle to live up to the promise I made to myself freshman year and at many times I questioned whether I could do it. I can remember threea-day practices and the academic struggles they caused. I remember a professor my freshman year telling me it was not possible. I remember picking up the phone with intentions of quitting. It was never easy and in those difficult transition periods— when one season was ending and another just beginning, my body wearied from weeks of training and matches— my dream seemed farfetched, childish, impossible even. Yet, at day’s end when I dropped back into bed, I would embrace the tiredness and the soreness, knowing that they were small acknowledgments of my dream’s fulfillment. However, sometimes

Thompson Named Co-Ivy League Player of the Year Junior shortstop hit .477 this season.

For the first time since 1996, a member of Brown Softball was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Year this spring. Stephanie Thompson ’13 posted some amazing offensive numbers—.477 AVG, 27 runs, 10 doubles, 9 home runs, 27 RBI—on her way to sharing the league’s top honor with Harvard’s Jane Alexander. “I was shocked because my whole life this type of award generally goes to a person on the team that won the conference title, so I didn’t even think of it as being a possibility,” said Thompson. “I was honored that they thought of me to share it.” Thompson’s performance in 2012 wasn’t just one of the best in the Ivy League, but in the nation as well. She ranked second in all of Division I in batting average (after leading the nation last year), she was the third toughest hitter to strikeout, and her on-base percentage of .571 was fifth-best. Thompson —who ranks in the top five all-time at Brown in home runs, batting average, runs, hits, doubles, and RBI—will lead a talented group of returners next year for Bruno. “I think it’s going to be a big year for us. We were knocking on the door all of last year and lost so many close games. We have a ton of talent returning and new coaches coming in…so I think we can come out strong. This group of girls works really hard and I can see that continuing next year.” A neuroscience concentrator, Thompson is spending her summer intern-

JACK HAYES

Brown University Sports Foundation

In early April, Jack Hayes was named Brown’s new Director of Athletics. A MANWITH A

PLAN BBM: You are a couple months into the job, how are things going? Jack Hayes: The job has been everything I expected it to be. I am very excited to be a part of the Brown University community and to be leading the athletic program. I am looking forward to meeting the studentathletes as they return to campus and I am excited to get the athletic year underway. BBM: What are some of the immediate challenges people brought to you? JH: Many of the discussions that have taken place in the past two years regarding athletics have been about the funding for a 37-sport program. We must work diligently to generate the resources necessary to support an athletics program of this size. This is an immediate challenge and is of great importance.

BBM: What was it about Brown that convinced you to leave Hofstra after 8 years? JH: I saw the Brown job as having

tremendous potential because of the University’s reputation and tradition. I felt my experiences at a variety of institutions would be applicable to what this job would entail. I had not been involved in another job search the entire time I was at Hofstra and never thought about leaving until there was an opening at Brown.

raised considerably with its transition from the America East to the CAA. Within several years of making the move, a number of its teams were winning games in the NCAA Tournament and many programs were able to schedule games against nationallycompetitive opponents. It was an excellent move for Hofstra.

BBM: Hofstra moved from the America East BBM: Brown won’t be changing leagues, so to the Colonial Athletic Association before you how do we lift our program competitively? arrived. How did changing conferences affect JH: We must address everything—how the athletic department? we recruit, what our facilities look like, JH: Hofstra’s level of competitiveness was how we go about filling vacancies, how we Hayes sharing a laugh with head football coach Phil Estes.

BBM: Can a department with 37 sports be competitive in each sport? Does priority have to play a role at some point? JH: We can be successful in all of them, but how success is defined may be different for some sports than for others. Prioritizing programs is the most realistic way to achieve department–wide success. I look forward to working with the coaches to identify ways in which we can advance each of our 37 sports. This business is about building on strengths and finding ways to get better.

He enters the job during a crucial point in Brown Athletics’ history. With the right vision and guidance, Bruno is poised to make a charge in the Ivy League and shake-up the perennial “big three.” The Brown Bear Magazine talked with Hayes about the challenges he faces in turning that potential into a reality.

communicate with alumni, how we interact with the local community. We must be familiar with the things our competitors are doing. We have sports that have demonstrated that Brown can be successful. We all can learn a great deal from the coaches of those programs. BBM: You have already hired Mike Martin ’04 to coach Men’s Basketball and Katie Flynn for the Softball opening. What makes them the best coaches for Brown? JH: Katie Flynn has been a Division I head coach for 18 years. She has compiled an overall record of 473-452 while coaching at three institutions. She led James Madison to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. She has also served on the NCAA Softball Championship Committee. She has the background, experience, and national recruiting ties we were looking for. Mike Martin was part of the winningest class at Brown. He knows Brown as a studentathlete, as a coach, and as a competitor. He played an instrumental role in helping to return Penn’s program to the top echelon of the Ivy League. He will be a tremendous representative of Brown University and an excellent mentor to our student-athletes.

Hayes with his predecessor Michael Goldberger. BBM: What do you expect from the coaches on your staff? JH: I expect all of our coaches to represent the University in a first class manner, to attract quality student-athletes that can help us be successful, and I expect them to address what the deficiencies are from the standpoint of letting me know how we can fix them and not use them a reason for why we don’t win. BBM: How important is the win-loss record? JH: Brown student-athletes come here having had very successful careers—both academically and athletically—at the high school level. They arrive with high expectations and they expect to win. They expect to have a very positive experience here and they will ultimately be the best spokespeople for our program after they graduate. It is our responsibility to provide them with the resources to be successful. We need to make sure that their experiences are positive and winning is an important part of that experience.

Hayes visits with a current football player at the 21st Annual BFA Golf Classic in August.

BBM: There are a number of facility upgrades happening right now. How important are those for Brown’s long-term success?

JH: The opening of the Nelson Fitness Center, Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, David J. Zucconi ’55 Varsity Strength & Conditioning Center, Garonzik Fitness Area, and Ittleson Quadrangle has created excitement and momentum. We are close to completing field renovations at Stevenson Field and the Field Hockey Field. As future projects are discussed, I am hopeful that the impact of projects such as the Nelson Fitness Center will be recognized by the many constituents of Brown because facility enhancements are an integral part of longterm athletic success. Our first momentumbuilding facility has been completed and that’s why I am excited about the future facility initiatives. BBM: What’s your vision for Brown Athletics? JH: First, I need to meet as many people as I can and learn as much as possible about the culture of Brown University and the Athletic Department. We must expect to win and expect to be successful. We need to be aware that everything we do sends a message. So it is important to send the message that we will compete for Ivy League championships, and we will represent Brown University in a firstclass manner, academically and athletically.

MEN’S CREW

Celebrating Success by Alex Fleming ’12

Impressive showings at the Eastern Sprints and IRA Championships awarded Brown Men’s Crew with the opportunity to race at Henley Royal Regatta. Late in June, Brown Men’s Crew embarked on a campaign to take on some of the worlds best at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in the UK. Competing at Henley allowed us to take our racing to the international stage, and also allowed our younger rowers/members to gain some valuable experience that will greatly benefit their racing ability in the years to come. We only send boats to race on the Thames when we achieve at a high level, and this year’s gold medal at the Eastern Sprints and two silver medals at the IRA National Championships were phenomenal results. Henley is an opportunity to celebrate that success and achieve even more. Brown entered in the Prince Albert Cup for college fours, the Temple Challenge Cup for college eights, and the Grand Challenge Cup – an open event that is most often only raced by elite college eights and national team boats. The head current and head wind was incredibly strong this year, leading to slower finish times and requiring a much greater level of endurance from racers than normal. After having success in the first round, our four was unfortunately defeated by the University of London’s top four, who ended up winning the event. After sending some fellow American crews home early and taking down both Nereus Rowing Club and the Russian Team from St. Petersburg University, the Junior Varsity faced the University of Washington National Championship Freshman boat in the grand final. The Huskies proved to be too strong as they moved off the start Family, friends, and current rowers together at Henley.

and fought off pushes from Brown through the middle of the race allowing them to take control of the race and secure the victory. The JV, made up mostly of younger athletes, has shown great promise for the future and it is great to know that they will be leading the team next season. The Varsity boat raced well and made it to the Grand Final where we faced a Californian Rowing Club boat comprised of Olympic trialists who didn’t make the cut. On paper they had us beat in weight and strength, so we knew we would have to put it all on the line if we wanted to take them down. After California took a length lead off the start, Brown held strong and walked back in, decreasing the margin to just two seats. We almost had them at a breaking point when the current kicked in for the last part of the race, allowing California to get the boost they needed to stay in front and finish with just over a length lead. Aside from racing, there were many other opportunities the team was able to enjoy. Athletes interested in going to grad school and competing in the esteemed Boat Race were able to tour Cambridge and Oxford Universities and gain a much better insight into the programs that are offered. Misha Joukowsky ’87 was generous enough to host an event at the Leander Club where all Brown rowers, coaches, alumni, family and friends were able to gather together to appreciate those who make opportunities like this possible. While the final results were not exactly what we had hoped for, they did not diminish the incredible experience we had and it was a great way for the Brown Crew family to celebrate a season that was successful in so many ways. Alex Fleming ’12 was a four-year member of Brown Men’s Crew and a captain both his junior and senior years.

ATHLETIC ALUMNI

1909 Baseball

Wendell Raymond 1909 was inducted into the Middlesex School Athletic Hall of Fame this past Spring. A member of the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame, Raymond is regarded as one of the great college catchers of all time.

1981

Men’s Swimming & Diving/ Water Polo

Russ Hertzberg ’81 moved up to his proper age group in the 2012 FINA World Masters Water Polo Championship, and played the physical/speed/attack style for the Kaos 50+ team. The team placed 6th. A highlight was taking the top Italian team into OT in the medal round qualification game. It proved to be too much to ask to beat the Italians in a one-goal game in Italy, with Italian refs. Hertzberg is on a schedule of road scrimmages in Calif., NYC, and Ukraine, with some swims and player/coaching when home in southwest Florida. He reminds water polo alum to get or stay fully prepared for the first Collegiate Alumni Water Polo Championship by USA Water Polo on Feb. 22-24, 2013, in Naples, Fla.

1985

Women’s Swimming & Diving Laura Reynolds ’85 coached her 50+ women’s water polo team to a gold medal at the 2012 FINA World Games held in Riccione, Italy in early June. She also played goalie for the team and was voted Most Valuable Player. Reynolds was the captain of the 1985 Brown Women’s Swim Team which will be inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame this November.

1986

Women’s Basketball

Ellen McClain ’86, Executive Vice President and COO of the New York Racing Association, was named one of 25 Influential Black Women in Business for 2012 by The Network Journal. “The experience of being on a team shaped me as a person and business leader,” McClain said. “I learned that I did not need to be a

Brown Bear Magazine

high-scoring star to have a meaningful role on the team. I learned to win with grace and lose with dignity. I learned how to be a leader and a role model.”

1990

Men’s Basketball

Congratulations to Bernard Muir ’90 who was named Director of Athletics at Stanford University in late July. Muir has worked in athletic administration for almost 25 years, most recently serving as the director of athletics at the University of Delaware. “I’m thrilled to be joining the Stanford community,” said Muir on the University’s website. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our family.”

1991

Field Hockey

Sarah Lamont Kocmond ’91, Project Manager at S’well Bottle, closed a deal to partner with USA Field Hockey as an official supplier. Ever grateful for a connection from Head Coach Jill Reeve, Sarah led the design and manufacture of a special bottle that was given to the Team just before departing for the Olympics. She admits, “being a former National Team hopeful, making it all the way to A team camp and tryouts, I know how hard these women worked to get to this level. Being able to work with the team is really a dream come true for me. It’s like a little part of me will be on the sidelines at the Olympics.”

2001

2003 Sailing

Congratulations to Alex Mehran ’03 who finished the Singlehanded TransPac race in 8 days, 12 hours, 21 minutes, and 5 seconds. He smashed the previous record—set in 1996—by nearly two-and-a-half days! “It feels great to take on a big goal and risk, put so much work in and have it pan out the way you wanted,” said Mehran. “Sailing has hundreds of different avenues to go down and [Brown sailors] should search for the one they find the most fulfillment in. I had very little idea what offshore short handed racing was while at Brown and now I have spent a good deal of my life after Brown pursuing it.”

2010

Men’s Ice Hockey

Aaron Volpatti ’10 re-signed a one-year contract with the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks in June. Volpatti’s 2011-12 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, but he recorded a goal, 37 penalty minutes, and 61 hits in 23 games.

2011 Footbal

Kyle Newhall-Caballero ’11 signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders on May 22nd. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Newhall-Caballero was a two-time All-Ivy League selection during his collegiate career for the Bears.

Men’s Crew

Luke McGee ’01 coached the United States’ under-23 Men’s Eight that won the World Championship earlier this summer. His crew just beat out Germany for gold.

Football

Former Brown quarterback Kyle Rowley ’01 set an Arena Football League record when he threw 12 touchdown passes in late June. A member of the Spokane Shock, Rowley’s record-breaking performance came in a 9063 victory against the San Jose SaberCats. Rowley was 30-for-37 for 392 yards.

Brown’s Academic-Athletic Conundrum: An Historical Perspective (Part II) By Peter Mackie ’59

W

ith the signing of the Ivy Group agreement in 1954, the eight Ivy presidents finally banded together in an attempt to control intercollegiate athletics and insulate their institutions from the excesses of “bigtime” athletics. Presidents now had the power to enforce the lofty cardinal principles of a League they had created: “athletic authorities should control athletics; the players must be truly representative of the student body and not composed of a group of specially recruited athletes” and “emphasis upon intercollegiate competition must be kept in harmony with the essential purposes of the institution”. With no athletic scholarships, de-emphasis was the watchword of the day. For some members, this meant a scaling back, especially in football. For Brown however it became a matter of trying to ramp up in order to compete with its better-positioned most time-honored “natural” rivals. There had been various sport-specific associations, but this allsports alignment with the country’s academic powerhouses was simply too tempting to resist, regardless of the challenges. Part of the hope was that presidents would be spared future embarrassments such as occurred from the 1929 Carnegie Report which had cited Brown on several counts of improper athletic practices. However, shortly after the 1952 Ivy agreement was signed, President Wriston was blindsided by the revelation that 14 football players had received illegal financial payments. All were promptly suspended. After round-robin Ivy play began in 1956, Brown steadily found itself seriously overmatched. The problem of course was systemic and largely beyond the control of President Barnaby Keeney, who had replaced Wriston in 1955. Brown’s athletic self-image was that of a marginal player in the Ivy pecking order, struggling like Sisyphus to push the rock up Mount Ivy. The 1956 freshman handbook “Bear Facts” presented the following description of Brown athletics: “Brown, the smallest school in the Ivy League, manages to hold its own...against Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, and the other Ivy colleges. The Bruins have never been consistent title contenders, but in the past half century have fielded teams which have gained wide recognition.” It did not take long after Ivy play began for a controversy around the place of sports in academia to engulf the Brown campus. In March of 1959, English Instructor Wade Thompson stirred up a hornet’s nest

The 1959 debate on athletics filled Sayles Hall. by placing an ad in the Daily Herald asking the Brown community to sign a petition to abolish football. Thompson opposed all intercollegiate sports, but singled out football as being anti-intellectual and too sanctified. It was a lightning rod issue which polarized the campus, gained national attention, and ended with a debate between Athletic Director Paul Mackesey ’32 and Thompson in a packed Sayles Hall. Mackesey argued that Ivy athletics are a means to an end, not an end in themselves, and that athletes perform better academically than their counterparts. Frank Lanning’s 1950’s cartoon captures the philosophy of the new Ivy League.

BEAR TRACKS Thompson, whose initiative had been a ruse to stir up discussion, hoped that Brown students would continue the debate on the value of sports at Brown. Pembrokers reaffirmed their tradition of not becoming Brown cheerleaders, football captain Don Warburton ’59 ended his pledge to protect Thompson, and Keeney weighed in by disagreeing with Thompson’s position, saying “that as long as students want to play football, they should.” The tempest ended as quickly as it began. In the 1960’s, spirited debate over whether Brown belonged in the Ivy League filled the pages of the Alumni Monthly. As Brown celebrated its Bicentennial in 1964, veteran Providence Journal sportswriter John Hanlon reviewed the University’s athletic program. He described Brown’s public image as “an athletic loser.” President Keeney, himself a former track athlete at North Carolina, said that “sports should not be overdone, nor should they be subordinated.” He objected to losing teams, but acknowledged that he would be “suspicious if Brown had two undefeated football teams in a row.” As the first Brown president in the Ivy League era, he described it as “a rough league...it is hard to get good, qualified student-athletes,” noting “the competition for them is stiff.” Keeney concluded that he was “happy with the league...I just wish the other schools were smaller.” Keeney embraced the amateur spirit of the Ivies, stating that “sports are for fun. Nothing more. Just fun.” As campus life intensified in the turbulent late ’60’s and early ’70’s, Brown Presidents had to contend with disgruntled alumni. President Ray Heffner, during this dismal athletic period, told alumni that Brown was “going to take a good hard look at its athletic programs, especially football and basketball.” His successor in 1970, Donald Hornig, offered the following balm: “Anything we tackle, we ought to do well.” Things did in fact improve in the 1970’s, partly because Brown women shed their low-key, non-competitive model and became early leaders in Ivy competition. As the Ivy League reached its 25 year milestone in 1979, major changes were afoot and Ivy athletics were coming under increased scrutiny and regulation. An Academic Index (AI) was created, whereby a mathematical formula dictated the admissions fate of potential student-athletes. Based on class rank and standardized test scores, the AI made admissions more formulaic, reduced admission directors’ latitude in using subjective judgment, and forced coaches to recruit within narrow bands pegged to the all-college average. League concern about over-involvement in their sport has resulted in all studentathletes having required annual “Rest Periods” of 49 days. At Brown initiatives have attempted to cajole athletes out of their academic comfort zones, taking courses not generally embraced by their teammates. External pressures also reshaped existing practices. After the Justice Department took the League to court in the early 1990’s, the Ivies signed a consent decree agreeing not to compare and align financial aid packages. This created a free market, putting Brown at a competitive disadvantage against the wealthier schools, which increased their packages dramatically. Clearly, the contemporary reality is farremoved from your grandfather’s Ivy League. On campus, discussion about the place of athletics has again taken center stage, with the release of President Simmons’ Response to the Report of the Athletics Review Committee in October. Administrative uneasiness with athletics is evident throughout. Simmons stated: “It is not clear at this time that academic authorities are in fact sufficiently in control of athletics at Brown.” She went on to note: “the administration in athletics...needs the support and help of academic

While men were beginning Ivy play, Pembrokers maintained their separate, low-key approach to athletics officers and faculty to align athletic competition with our core educational goals.” Admission slots have long-since replaced undergraduate enrollment as the size-determiner of Brown’s athletic cohort. While seeking to “be competitive in a range of sports” Simmons recommended “reducing the number of slots allocated to athletic recruits” to “appropriately rebalance academic goals and athletic interests in the Brown context.” In addition, despite the phenomenal annual performance of Brown’s athletic/academic achievers, President Simmons recommended raising the AI of incoming athletes “to increase the representativeness of athletes at Brown.” Increased funding for athletics is also part of this controversial grand experiment, in an effort to make Brown more competitive. Simmons concludes that “we can now set a course for change that will result in a better experience for studentathletes at Brown.” This would be a welcome change, for since Ivy League play began in 1956, Brown has managed only 119 championships (of the 1,711 awarded). Of late, Brown’s quest for elite athletes and championships has become evermore challenging in this increasingly super-competitive League. Princeton, described by its President as the “Gold Standard when it comes to athletic achievement” (414 titles), seems to have embraced athletics without sacrificing its top national academic standing. “Education Through Athletics” is their athletic department’s motto. As President Paxson exchanges her tiger stripes for a bear suit, hopefully she will help infuse the Brown culture with a positive, winning attitude. With the University approaching its 250th anniversary, it is time to exchange the long-standing false dichotomy of academics versus athletics with a new paradigm which values athletics as an integral part of the overall educational process. Without that rapprochement, Brown can never be truly whole. Peter Mackie ’59 is the sports archivist for the Edward North Robinson 1896 Collection of Brown Athletics

His efforts as President were also tangible. The plethora of facility improvements during his tenure had an untold impact on the success of Brown Athletics, most notably: the renovation of Meehan Auditorium, the creation of the Rugby Fields on the Marvel Gym site, Meister-Kavan Field and the Berylson Family Fields, and most recently the building of the new state-of-the-art Aquatics and Fitness Center. In addition, O’Keefe focused his efforts into providing Brown’s student-athletes and coaches with the greatest experiences possible. He assisted in the endowment of 11 coaching chairs (nine head coaches and two assistant coaches) and supported the fundraising efforts for countless international and regional trips for Brown student-athletes. As the Sports Foundation and Brown Athletics enter a new era, we thank Ken O’Keefe for his assiduous efforts and leadership which made this next step not only a possibility but a realistic and achievable goal.

After serving as the President of the Brown University Sports Foundation since the winter of 2002, Kenneth O’Keefe announced his decision to step down this spring. The BUSF would like to thank Ken for his tireless volunteer efforts and for leading the Sports Foundation and Brown Athletics through an unprecedented ten years of fundraising success. A football and baseball player at Brown, O’Keefe graduated in 1976 with a degree in Economics; his three daughters—Kimberly ’02, Kristen ’04, and Kara ’09—would later follow in his footsteps. He was a long-serving volunteer for Brown before being appointed President of the BUSF, replacing Gordon Perry ’55 P’88 ’92 GP’10. In his first full fiscal year as BUSF President (FY’03) $2.48 million dollars in annual-use and $4.4 million in overall cash was raised from 3,854 donors. In comparison, in his final fiscal year (FY’12) $3.37 million in annual-use and $9.68 million in overall cash was raised from 5,862 donors. An incredible increase in support for Brown Athletics in part to O’Keefe’s leadership and vision.
