Letter from the Editor Dear Key Clubbers, With the fall season rolling in quickly, there are many upcoming service projects and fundraising ideas up for your club’s grab. I am excited to let you know that this is dues season, and that your club should be rounding up members in order to get early bird or be a club in good standing. Check out information on dues on page 3. With Halloween coming up this month, there are many themed projects and ideas to have in your key clubs. October is a great month to raise money for Unicef. Unicef not only helps feed kids, they are The Eliminate Project’s organization. With Unicef so closely tied to our District Project,

It is important that we support all branches of Unicef. What better way than to participate in Trick or Treating for Unicef! Check it out on the Halloween against Hunger page in this edition. With the seasons changing and the cool autumn air coming in, now is the time to recruit members and make sure that your Key Club will have a good year. With that in mind, enjoy the October edition of the Forty-Two Times. With love and service, Your LtG Brooke Reichert

MEMBERSHIP DUES

Dues are an important part on keeping Key Club International running properly. Since Division 42 Oregon is part of the Pacific Northwest District, members must pay PNW dues. The dues are $12 per member and cover many important things. District dues help pay for District Convention, insurance, Lieutenant Governor expenses, and the behind the scenes costs of Key Club International. Each member must pay dues in order to be considered an official member. If a member of the club cannot afford dues, make sure to get in contact with your advisor. Most often times, Kiwanis clubs will pay dues for members who cannot afford them. In order to be a club in good standing, your club must have 15 paid members by the deadlines. November 1st: Early Bird December 1st: Regular

Making your Meetings Move Halloween Edition

It is very important to make you meetings as fun and interactive as you can. In order to get people involved with Key Club and to get them staying in Key Club, make sure that your meetings are exciting and energetic. One way to do this is to hold activities at meetings and to have guest speakers. Ask involved members of the community to come and talk about the importance of service at your meetings. Since it is October, a month of huge tradition and activities, take advantage of Halloween to come up with some fun activities for your group. Guess that candy! Can you name the candy brand just from its slogan? Divide your club members into small teams and see how many of these they can guess in four minutes. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand Taste the rainbow Makes mouths happy Two for me, none for you Hungry? Why wait? Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don’t. ICEBREAKERS Icebreakers are a great way to get members involved and more active. Icebreakers allow members to meet each or become better friends and let the club environment become more relaxed and easy. Try some of the icebreakers below! Pterodactyl

Shakers!

Everyone stands in a big circle. Players go around in a circle one at a time shrieking “Pterodactyl” to the person next to them. If the person shrieks back, the direction changes. It otherwise just continues around the circle. Challenge is: nobody can show their teeth or they are out. Players must hold their lip over their teeth, even while speaking and shrieking, Laughter and fun ensues with this one!

These are a good stretch to get members moving and awake. Everyone will first stand up. Everyone will shake their arms and legs 8 times each, one at a time. Members will count to 8 while shaking their arm 8 times. This will repeat with each limb. The next times, count for 4 each and then to 2 each. Lastly, do one each quickly and add a hop at the end. Repeat this quickly to get blood pumping and to wake everyone up!

Killer Looks Like in Pterodactyl, everyone stands in a large circle. Everyone will look down when the group leader says “look down”. When the group leader says “look up!” everyone will quickly look up at somebody in the circle. If the person is not looking back, the looker is safe. If two people look at each other, they are out of the game. It is extra fun if players add in dramatic flair when they get out!

Catch me if you can! Players make pairs of two. The pairs turn back to back and change something about each of their appearances. When ready, both people in each pair turn around and try to catch what the other person changed!

HALLOWEEN AGAINST HUNGER Trick or Treat for Unicef

Trick or Treat for Unicef is a great way to take advantage of the holidays to do a little service and make a difference to others. Trick or Treat is a competition amongst different clubs and activities in my school, to see who can get the most pounds of food. I encourage you to do the same! Our school always ends up getting tons of food and the whole school gets competitive and has fun. Members simply go door to door exclaiming “Trick or Treat: So Kids Can Eat!”, and collecting nonperishable foods for the hungry. Key Clubs can also order

Unicef boxes off of Keyclub.org in order to collect change for Unicef. Consider having a bottle drive for spare change for Unicef! Hold a Halloween Haunted House! Astoria Key Club is teaming up with the Thespian Club to hold one on October 26th. Don’t afraid to get creative!
