Ten of SSU’s sports are in the CCAA, water polo is in the WWPA, and men’s and women’s tennis are in the PacWest. Sonoma State athletics got its start in 1964 with the school’s first men’s basketball team. Through the years, the Seawolves have had much success including national championships in 1990 (women’s soccer), 2002 (men’s soccer) and 2009 (men’s golf).
MISSION STATEMENT
The goal of the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide a positive, equitable, and diverse environment for the student-athletes and staff. All athletic staff members are responsible for fostering these priorities via role modeling and mentoring student-athletes while upholding a competitive spirit that stresses amateurism, ethical conduct, good sportsmanship, and rules compliance. Priorities for all student-athletes include: academic excellence, competitive success, and community outreach.

In 2005-06, Fuscaldo led the Seawolves to their first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a 16-4 conference record. For his efforts, Fuscaldo was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year by his peers. The squad also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the previous nine years. Individually, the ‘05-’06 Seawolves featured an All-American, two All-West Region players, four All-Conference stars, and the CCAA Player of the Year.

Pat Fuscaldo returns for his 23rd season as head coach of the Sonoma State University men’s basketball team in 2016-17. In his previous 22 years at the helm, Fuscaldo has a record of 295-295 overall and 227-215 in league play. In 2007-08, Fuscaldo became the winningest basketball coach in Sonoma State history and he is currently the dean of Men’s Basketball coaches in the CCAA.

Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 19 seasons at the helm, including three 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a school-record 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has accomplished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle.

The “Seawolf” is a mythical creature and title of a book (“The Sea Wolf”) by famed author and adventurer Jack London. While the SSU mascot bears no resemblance to the antagonist in the book, it celebrates London, who made his home and wrote many of his books living in the north bay town of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County.

A total of 93 student-athletes earned All-Academic honors during the 2015-16 season. To earn this award, you must have a grade point average of 3.4 or higher. The department’s combined GPA of 3.097 was the highest in school history.

TICKET TO SUCCESS Ticket to Success is a program run by the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics which brings students from local elementary schools to basketball and soccer games. During their visit, students will have an opportunity to tour the campus, meet the head coach and student-athletes, and hear about the importance of pursuing college. In addition Sonoma State teams will travel to individual elementary school campuses to conduct clinics for the students. This continuing relationship with elementary school students will help support early college awareness. Children exposed to higher education at a young age have a much greater chance of attending college. Through the medium of sports, we challenge students to see themselves going to college. The student-athletes act as role models sharing their own personal experience as a college student while the coaches talk about the importance of hard work, perseverance, and goals.
