HEAD COACH

Joaquin Lopez will begin his third season as the head coach for the Sonoma State University women’s tennis program in 2012-13. He is in his sixth year with the women’s tennis team and from 2004 to 2010 he served as an assistant with the men’s squad, as well.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Lopez earned NCAA Division I national rankings in singles and doubles and was named the university’s top student-athlete during his senior year. He then played five years of professional tennis, earning an ATP ranking of No. 844 in the world and No. 48 in Spain. During his professional career, Lopez had several wins against ATP Top 100 players. In 1996, Lopez received his Master’s Degree in Sport Psychology in Spain. He has coached top juniors in Germany and has worked as a tennis psychologist with professional players in Spain. Lopez graduated in May 2000 from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and in 2008 he earned his license as a marriage and family psychotherapist in California. Currently, Lopez has a private practice as a psychotherapist and he teaches Transformational Tennis, his own innovative coaching approach emphasizing personal growth through sports. He resides in Sebastopol with his wife, Aimee, and two children, Ian and Vida.

JOSE HILLA

ASSISTANT COACH

Jose Hilla begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Sonoma State women’s tennis team in 2013. A native of Oviedo, Spain, Hilla is a former national champion at the collegiate level. He also has collegiate coaching experience at Santa Clara University. Following one All-American season at Fresno City College, Hilla transferred to Fresno Pacific where he was part of a Sunbird team that won three straight Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) championships, from 2009 to 2011. Hilla won two championships while at Fresno Pacific, in 2009 and 2011, and was the runner-up in 2010. During the 2010 season, he was ranked as one of the top ten players in the nation in both singles and doubles.

HIGH SCHOOL: Comes to Sonoma State from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana...was voted her team’s most improved player three years in a row. PERSONAL: Chose Sonoma State because of the opportunity to play NCAA Division II tennis...following graduation, she would like to follow in her grandparents’ footsteps and start an accounting firm...lists Maria Sharapova as her biggest influence as an athlete...plays the piano.

SARA CELMA CLASS: Junior HOMETOWN: Benicarlo, Spain LAST SCHOOL: Fresno Pacific

HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE: Transfers to Sonoma State from Fresno Pacific...had a tremendous two-year career for the Sunbirds (2009-2011)...played No. 2 singles her freshman season, helping the Sunbirds to a national title...went 24-1 and was named a Second Team All-American...as a sophomore in 2011, she was a First Team All-American after going 13-6 at No. 1 singles, despite battling numerous injuries...helped lead the Sunbirds to a national runner-up finish...graduated from Ies Ramon Cid in Benicarlo, Spain. PERSONAL: Came to Sonoma State because she wanted to play for Coach Lopez...is a fan of FC Barcelona...lists Andre Agassi as her favorite player...her favorite sports moment was watching Spain win its first World Cup in 2010.

LAST SCHOOL: Monte Vista High School 2012: Turned in another very fine season as a sophomore...led the team with 19 singles wins...went 15-7 in dual matches, primarily at No. 5 and No. 6...had a 17-11 record in doubles play...had a six-match singles winning streak in the middle of the season...won 6-0, 6-0 in her only match at No. 2 doubles...was 6-5 when playing against nationally-ranked teams. 2011: Had a very successful freshman season, winning eight of her combined singles and doubles matches...went 4-1 in singles, playing primarily at the No. 6 spot...was a perfect 4-0 in doubles with teammate Katya Welborn...had a big 8-3 doubles win over Fresno Pacific, the NAIA’s top-ranked team. HIGH SCHOOL: Came to Sonoma State from Monte Vista High School in Danville...was her team’s MVP as a senior... helped lead the Mustangs to an NCS championship...her team also was an NCS finalist another season...played varsity all four years. PERSONAL: Chose Sonoma State because of the nice campus and attractive housing...is a fan of the Golden State Warriors...loves the music of Taylor Swift...enjoys eating sushi. 2012: Played 28 singles matches for Sonoma State as a sophomore, winning 15 of them...was 6-2 in tournament play, the best mark on the team...played everywhere from No. 3 to No. 6 on the ladder...had a 5-2 record at No. 6 and was a perfect 2-0 at No. 3...turned in a 16-9 record in doubles play with partner Lauren Ha. 2011: Went 1-2 in three singles matches...got her win at No. 6 against Academy of Art...split two matches in doubles with teammate Megan White. LAST SCHOOL: Calvary Chapel Christian School 2012: Spent the entire season in the No. 1 singles spot, playing against some of the top competition in the west region...ended the season at 8-18 in singles play...went 4-4 in tournament action...picked up two wins against regionally-ranked opponents...also played No. 1 doubles with Krista Cole, going 6-25 overall. 2011: Showed a lot of promise in a very strong freshman season...went 12-10 overall in singles, mostly at the No. 3 spot...earned a 2-1 record at No. 1 singles...her season featured wins over opponents from San Jose State, UC San Diego, and Cal State L.A...posted a 4-11 mark in doubles play, primarily with teammate Anastasia Eliseeva.
