Life Outside the Classroom News Gold award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

At Easter 44 participants went the Yorkshire Dales to enjoy the splendours of the Three Peaks. The remainder of the gold participants went to Snowdonia in July. Snowdonia offers enormous challenges so any group which scales Snowdon and some of the other less known peaks and ridges can justifiably be extremely proud of themselves.

Gold Award

Richard Horridge, Chiristina Rasanayagam and Georgina Eales all received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Mark Reading on the last day of Michaelmas term.

Silver Award

Congratulations to Faye Al Nakeeb, Ellie Harding, Adam Robertson, Daisy Perry and Hamish Docherty who have all received Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards this year.

Silver award

Last year saw the introduction of the system where the Upper Fourth year complete their Bronze Award as members of the CCF. After that they have the opportunity to opt out of the CCF to continue with the award scheme. There is great enthusiasm from the participants – especially evident in the arduous expedition section of the award.

The first expedition of the year took Fifth Form participants to the Shropshire for their practice expedition over Wenlock Edge and the Long Mynd. They then went to Exmoor for their qualifying expedition at the end of June. Largely warm but variable weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and energy as 10 groups walked between Minehead via Porlock and the Doone Valley to Lynmouth. The bravery and determination shown throughout was outstanding and the success of expeditions was evident on all 60 faces at the completion of their trekking and camping.
