MATERIAL DIALOGUE CAMILLA WORDIE + BRODIE SIM

MATERIAL DIALOGUE ‘material dialogue’ is a cross-disciplinary collaborative project between textiles and sculpture. the aim is to build up a conversation between surface and space, whilst challenging ideas of function and aesthetics.

our definition of SCULPTURE: -occupation of space-

our definition of TEXTILES: -study of surface-

1 RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHS

RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHS to spark the conversation in our collaboration we set up a blog in which we could post and respond to each other’s photographs considering material, surface and space. for the exhibition we selected 8 photographs that best represented this conversation and that acted as research studies for the production of our material tiles. 2 MATERIAL TILES

MATERIAL TILES as a result of our visual conversation, we arrived at the idea of testing surface and material through making tiles. we designed a uniform casting box 20 x 20 cm (the same size as this book) and each began to create tiles that would transcend materiality through a casting process.

3 MARSHMALLOWS + MILK

MARSHMALLOWS + MILK the decision to make marshmallows came from the want to re-create the texture and shape of the tiles. we also like the feeling of white on white. we cut them into squares to resonate the shape of the tiles and powdered them with icing sugar to give an impression of the piles. by using something edible it allowed an engagement with the viewer in a way that was relevant to the work. milk is white too.

4 EXHIBITION

EXHIBITION we used the space to exhibit our collaboration in a way that blurred the boundaries between space (sculpture) and surface (textiles), between function and aesthetics. it documented our conversation and presented the ‘material dialogue’ through photographic material, physical material and edible material.
