Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 14th edition of the European Union Film Festival (EUFF).

As life in Hong Kong and Macao has gradually returned to normality, cinemas may finally operate without restrictions. Cinephiles can fully enjoy the appeal of European films on large screens again.

The European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, in close collaboration with the Member States and Switzerland, is pleased to bring to Hong Kong cinemas a new selection of 17 award-winning films from Europe from 9 to 19 March. The Consulates General chose them carefully, to present their countries’cinematic talent. As always, we have selected a wide variety of genres, which include comedy, animation, thrillers and drama.

The EUFF is an ideal way of sharing Europe's culture, history, and heritage with the public of Hong Kong. The European Union and Hong Kong share a passion for cinema. This affinity offers a great opportunity to discover each other’s way of reflecting on human nature and values.

Sadly, 2023 marks the second year of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. As last year, the EUFF will open with a Ukrainian film to demonstrate support and solidarity with Ukraine and its brave people.

The film, Luxembourg, Luxembourg, is a comedy featuring twin brothers from Ukraine searching for their father, who they have heard will soon pass away in Luxembourg. Although many Ukrainian families are currently facing death and separation from relatives and friends, this film is not actually about the war. It is a film which shows a different side of Ukraine, about the Ukrainian people striving for a normal life with laughter and love.

In addition to the EUFF, the EU Office promotes cinema through FilmIt, a filmmaking competition organised with the Native English Speaker Section of the Education Bureau. In 2022, over 65 schools and 445 students took part in this competition. I am pleased that a montage of the short films produced by the students will be projected at the beginning of each screening.

Once again, I want to extend my gratitude to the Consulates General of the EU Member States and Switzerland for their cooperation, and to our longstanding partner Broadway Cinematheque for making the EUFF possible. I also wish to thank the Education Bureau for their hard work in collaborating on FilmIt with us.

歡迎來到第14屆歐洲電影節！

隨著香港及澳門居民生活逐漸回復正常，戲院現時已 沒有入座率限制，影迷能再次在大銀幕盡情觀賞歐洲 電影。

歐洲聯盟駐香港及澳門辦事處很欣喜能和各歐盟成 員國和瑞士合作，由3月9日至 19日，為香港觀眾帶來 17部歐洲得獎新作。這些由各國領事館精心挑選的電 影作品，均展現出各國的高水平電影製作。一如以往， 這些電影的種類相當廣泛，包括喜劇、動畫、驚慄、劇 情片等等。

歐洲電影節是個珍貴的機會向香港觀眾展示歐洲文 化、歷史及傳統，顯示出歐盟與香港對電影藝術的同 樣熱愛，並藉此探討兩地如何展現人性和價值觀。可悲 的是，今年踏入俄羅斯侵略烏克蘭的第二年，跟去年一 樣，歐洲電影節會以烏克蘭電影開幕，希望向烏克蘭及 其勇敢的人民表達堅實的支持和團結一致的態度。

開幕電影《尋找他爸的故事》是一部喜劇，描寫一對來 自烏克蘭的孖生兄弟，得知在盧森堡的生父處於瀕死 邊緣，展開一次尋找父親的旅程。儘管很多烏克蘭家 庭與親友現正面臨生離死別，電影卻無關戰爭，反而展 示了烏克蘭的另一面向，就是人民如何努力地爭取正 常生活，當中充滿歡欣和愛。

除了歐洲電影節外，今年歐洲聯盟駐香港及澳門辦 事處亦透過與教育局旗下的「英語教師計劃」合辦的 FilmIt 短片創作比賽活動推廣電影。2022年，來自超

過65間學校的445名學生參與了是次短片比賽。我十 分高興能夠於每場電影開始前，向觀眾先放映他們所 製作的短片精選片段。

謹此再次感謝各歐盟成員國及瑞士的領事館，與我們 合力舉辦歐洲電影節，亦感謝我們的長年合作伙伴百 老匯電影中心鼎力支持。同時，亦感謝教育局和我們合 作舉辦 FilmIt 活動的不懈努力。

There are many beautiful places to die. Luxembourg is not one of them. But beautiful or not, Luxembourg makes dying very expensive. When twin brothers hear that their long-absent father is sick in Luxembourg, they set out on a journey to see him one last time. Will the man they find be the badass father they remember? A declaration of love from the director to his father, the film tries to answer the question – why are we so drawn to those who constantly run away from us?

Middle-aged Mirjana works at a thread factory. On the eve of her 20th work anniversary, when she is to receive an award at a modest celebration, her interactions with her loved ones illustrate parts of her life: the one behind her, the one she is living and the one that is yet to come. A Blue Flower is a film about a woman, a mother, and a daughter, a film that evokes emotional associations and urges us to take a long, hard look at ourselves.

12-year-old gymnast, Tinja, is desperate to please her imageobsessed mother, whose popular blog "Lovely Everyday Life" presents their family's idyllic existence as manicured suburban perfection. When one person succeeds, another has doubts! Freelance journalist Juan Romero encounters inconsistencies in a cover story by awardwinning reporter Lars Bogenius. Loosely based on the iconic Italian ballerina Carla Fracci's autobiography, the film starts from the story of Carla as a child in the post-war period, then as an adolescent and young woman in the Milan of the 1950s and 1960s, recounting her rise to success and the difficult choice to become a mother at a crucial moment in her career. Instinct, passion and challenge – these elements characterise the life of one of the greatest dancers in Italy.

Game show host Eveline wants a more meaningful life. Yousef wants sunglasses as cool as his classmates. Eveline and Yousef could not be more different from each other, except for their braces. Yet their paths cross when Yousef, encouraged by his friends, steals Eveline's brand new video camera to trade for sunglasses. When she reports the crime, Eveline declares under pressure that she has been threatened with a knife. What appears to be a mere white lie causes a chain reaction of consequences. After all, the stamp "with knife" is not easily erased.

This remake of the 1940 film with the same name tells the story of a theatre company, its men and women in love, mistakes and misunderstandings. Chico loves Tatão, who is courted by Artur. Graça loves Chico, but doesn't know he loves Tatão. Santana writes a play for the Grandelinhas that will serve as a guide to Chico's passion and convince Tatão that he is a rich count. The play is then staged and they all end up in prison.

For as long as they can remember, the Solé family have spent every summer picking the peaches from their orchard in Alcarràs, a small village in Spain. But this year's crop will be their last. The owner of the land is deceased, and his grandson and heir wants them to abandon the farming business so he can uproot the trees and install solar panels. So as the children and the adults get together for the harvest, the family finds themselves at odds as to how they should go on, and risk losing more than their home.

Wanda is a Polish caretaker who has left her own small children in Poland to look after Josef, the stroke-ridden patriarch of the wealthy Wegmeister-Gloor dynasty. Wanda is adept in navigating the tricky family dynamics between the two grown offspring and the elegant if controlling matriarch Elsa, along with the sporadic intervention of animals stuffed or alive. But an unexpected turn of events turns everything upside down. While the film exposes present-day realities of class injustice, thanks to the empathetic lens, it is never less than a very human comedy.
