‘Hypnosis for Body and Mind’ It doesn’t come as that much of a surprise to most people that we (human beings, that is) can change the way we feel by deliberately changing our behaviour and our thoughts. I mean, it’s common knowledge that if you’re lying in bed feeling miserable, you’ll feel better if you get up, have a shower, and go for a walk, for example. Likewise, most people are well aware of the expression ‘mind over matter’ – meaning we can do just about anything if we put our mind to it. But what does ‘put our mind to it’ really mean? Well, I suppose it means ‘think the right thoughts’. Many people need a little help and guidance to learn to ‘think the right thoughts’, and I spend most of my work time treating client’s suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem. Hypnotherapy is incredibly effective for these conditions.

the rate of flow through your digestive system? Research has also shown our ability to speed up the rate of healing in our body by using hypnosis. We can make broken bones heal faster, as well as heal skin conditions such as psoriasis, for example. Even more amazingly, did you know that thousands of surgical operations have been carried out using the power of the mind as the only form of anaesthetic? If you’d like some help to learn to use the power of your mind, and take control of either your physical or mental health, get in touch today for a free, no obligation consultation. However, what never ceases to amaze people (including me) is the things we can control about our physical body, if we ‘think the right thoughts’. Did you know that it is possible to control your body temperature, your blood pressure, and even 8

Love your pet… love your vet Don’t break the bank... Insure your pet! We always recommend insuring your pets – advances in veterinary medicine mean that vets can offer an incredibly high level of care to your pets, but this does not come without costs and some conditions – particularly those that require referral to a specialist, can be very expensive to treat. Accidental injuries such as broken bones, torn ligaments and wounds can happen in an instant and conditions such as cancer, medical problems and infectious diseases can crop up out of the blue and when least expected. The good news is, however, that pet insurance offers owners (and vets) peace of mind that the most appropriate treatment can be given in each case, without cost becoming a major issue. Without pet insurance in place it can sometimes be hard to afford unexpected vet bills and decisions on treatment may have to be based on finances rather than the actual best course of action or treatment for your pet. Imagine how heart-breaking this would be. Owners are also legally responsible for their own dog’s behaviour and claims against dogs are being increasingly made following bites, jumpingup incidents and accidents which happen and

can sometimes be very costly. Personal liability insurance is advisable and is included with most pest insurance. Always look for a pet insurer that offers life-long cover (ie, your pet doesn’t run out of insurance after a year or once a certain amount of money has been spent).

Some typical costs: Toy/sock removal from bowel: approx. £1,000 £2,000 Arthritis – variable but often £1,000+ Fracture repair – between £1,000 - £4,000 Cataract surgery – approx. £2,500 per eye Cancer treatment – variable depending on type but between £1,000 - £5,000

Take home message … ALWAYS insure your pets. Chris Devlin BVSc MRCVS is a Vet and Partner at Hillside Veterinary Centre in Corfe Mullen. w: www.hillsidevets.co.uk.

What happened in... ...February 1972? by Patrick D Cousins

On 3rd February 1972 the Curse of Tutankhamen claimed another victim - allegedly. As the boy king’s mask was being placed on a plane in Cairo, to be flown to Paris, the museum’s Director of Antiquities died – surely proof of a curse many said. It reminds me of another true story, of a man who proposed to his girlfriend, saying “If you won’t marry me, I’ll die.” She turned him down and sure enough, sixty years later, he died. Let that be a lesson to all who scoff. 1st: France requested the extradition of Klaus Barbie after Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld found him living in Bolivia. He was convicted in 1983 and died in prison four years later at the age of 77. 4th: The Iran Blizzard, the worst blizzard in history, began. Over the next few weeks it killed more than 4,000 people, burying villages under as much as 26 feet of snow. 8th: A state of emergency was declared throughout the UK due to the coalminers’ strike and dwindling stocks of coal.

15th: A US patent was granted to Willem J Kolff for the invention of the world’s first artificial heart. 17th: Prime Minister Ted Heath narrowly won a vote in the House of Commons on whether or not to join the ‘Common Market’, after throwing all his toys out of the pram and ‘threatening’ to resign. Why didn’t they let him? The VW Beetle became the most popular car in history on production of the 15,007,034th model. The previous record, 15,007,033, had been held by the Ford Model T. 21st: Richard Nixon became the first US president to visit Communist China.

23rd: Elvis and Priscilla Presley separated. They had married on 1 May 1967 at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. 24th: Twenty eight men on board a Russian submarine were killed when fire broke out while it was submerged. Twelve survivors were trapped inside the vessel for three weeks as it was towed from the Arctic Ocean to the Kola Peninsula. 25th: Members of the National Union of Mineworkers voted to end their strike in return for a twenty per cent pay increase.

The average cost of a house was £7,300 Petrol was about 35p a gallon

My New Year’s resolution for 2014 was to keep my New Year’s resolution! This was to remain as healthy as I have been. I hope that you are succeeding too. To help you with this we have two great practitioners who you may not be familiar with, Marjo Algate and Mark Arnold. Marjo practises here at the clinic as an Iridologist. By looking carefully into the eyes a lot can be told about the person’s health in their past, present and any potential vulnerable areas of health to be aware of. Depending on what is diagnosed, herbal medicine is made up by our Naturopath Sarah Burt. Marjo has a strong medical background, and is also a practicing mid-wife at St. Mary’s Maternity Hospital in Poole. Marjo is available on Saturdays as well as by appointment during the week. Mark is an acupuncturist who is interested in all areas of health. He himself was a patient here many years ago and is pleased to have joined the clinic as a practitioner. He treats people with both 5 Element Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) styles of acupuncture, giving the patient the most thorough treatment. Mark is here every Friday. He deals with all areas of health including pain syndromes, arthritis, IBS, headaches, migraines, insomnia, skin conditions, menopausal symptoms etc.

News from Westminster Annette Brooke MP Mid Dorset and North Poole Consituency First may I wish all readers a Happy New Year! I would also like to commiserate with anybody who has suffered from the adverse weather and flood conditions. Over the years I have been contacted many times about flooding and drainage issues in Corfe Mullen and so I have been concerned about a number of the ‘wet spots’ that I know about with the heavy rainfall we have experienced. Personally I am even more convinced that the extreme weather patterns that we are seeing are as a result of long term climate change arising from our lifestyles. I genuinely fear for the future of our grandchildren and children all over the world unless we make changes now.

I am pleased that we will enter the New Year with more confidence and optimism as far as the economy is concerned and hope that we will see any benefits from growth shared across our whole population. I worry greatly about the impact that some of the cuts in welfare benefits have had on very vulnerable people. Whilst thanking all those involved with their operation we have to be concerned about the rise in the number of food banks. Clearly, they are providing a much needed service and I am grateful that this service is available in Corfe Mullen.

16

Just before Christmas I accompanied my young granddaughter to Poole Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. She had fallen down a whole flight of stairs and bumped her head. Fortunately, she was fine but we were advised by somebody responding to our call to the 111 line that she should be checked. It was about 7pm and I saw first hand just how crowded the Unit was and just as described in the news for A and E units across the country. Although, I had great concerns about the NHS reorganisation instigated by this Government, I can’t think that is responsible for this enormous rise in attendees at A and E Units. I do feel that we need to find a better way of dealing with minor injuries and conditions. Having experienced 2 serious falls in the last 6 years I value hospital services enormously!

I have had a very busy return to Parliament, meeting with Ministers to discuss: our local hospitals, tackling bullying in schools and outside of schools, and the implementation of Department of Education Advice on school entry for summer born children. I have also spoken in several debates on planning and housing and chaired a number of meetings. I attended a particularly interesting dinner held by UNICEF to discuss their forthcoming campaigns. I have been a Parliamentary Champion for this organisation for some time and have already been asking questions about the forthcoming ‘modern’ slavery bill which will aim to tackle the shocking crimes associated with the trafficking of children and adults. If you do have any issues you wish to raise with me, do contact me on 01202 693555 or by e mail brookea@parliament. uk<mailto:brookea@parliament.uk>

Don’t miss your 2013/14 ISA allowance. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR OPPORTUNITIES IN THESE TAXING TIMES Corfe Mullen based financial advisor Scott Symes feels that in these austere times, tax give-aways are pretty hard to find. Your annual Individual Savings Account allowance is one bright spot – an increasingly valuable tax break and investment opportunity that should not be overlooked.

equity markets and also a useful short or medium term account for cash. You can invest a maximum of £5,720 in a cash ISA – half your annual allowance – but in this environment of ultra-low interest rates it is perhaps no surprise to learn that the average cash ISA rate is at its lowest level since their introduction in April 1999.

Alongside pensions, ISAs are the most taxefficient way to save and invest for the future and should be a fundamental building block towards long-term financial wellbeing. Of course, the favourable treatment of ISAs may not be maintained and is subject to changes in legislation, but recent government announcements have hinted at its recognition of the important part ISAs can play in solving Britain’s savings crisis.

As a consequence of this and a greater degree of confidence on the part of investors, sales of stocks & shares ISAs have increased. You can invest your full annual allowance in a stocks & shares ISA and many investors, prepared to accept more risk than the cash alternative, are recognising that this may be the way to take better advantage of this tax break. You can also transfer existing cash ISAs into a stocks & shares ISA, although it is important to remember that you cannot transfer them in the opposite direction.

The annual ISA limit for this tax year is £11,520. This means a couple will be able to put away £23,040 before the end of the 2013/14 tax year with no further tax to pay on dividends or interest income and no capital gains tax liability at all. The important thing to remember about the tax reliefs that come with ISAs is that if you do not use them, you lose them. If you miss the end of tax year deadline, that’s it until next year. Unlike a pension, there is no tax relief on the money invested into an ISA, but the tax advantages achieved over time are similar. The main difference is that ISAs are far more accessible – you can make withdrawals at any time and these may be taken regularly to provide an income; whereas with a personal pension you have to wait until you are 55 before you can get your hands on your savings.

We all like to think that we work hard for our money and pay our taxes, but you don’t owe the HM Revenue & Customs any more than you need to. With straightforward planning you can make sure you pay as little tax as you need; and making the most of your ISA allowance is a good place to start. To receive a complimentary guide covering Wealth Management, Retirement Planning or Inheritance Tax Planning, contact Scott Symes, on 01202 951227 or 07885 899742, by email scott.symes@sjpp.co.uk or visit www. scottsymeswm.co.uk.

A Junior ISA for children under the age of 16 is a great way to save for your children’s future. The current 2013/14 allowance is £3,720 per child. All of this highlights the importance of making the most of your current valuable tax break. ISAs offer a tax-efficient and convenient gateway to the

Corfe Mullen Utd. FC Match Reports Dorset Senior League. 14.12.2013. Kingston Lacy 1 - 7 Corfe Mullen Utd. Corfe continue to climb up the Dorset Senior League with their third win on the trot against a poor Kingston Lacy side now playing their home games at Merley Sports Ground, which has a superb playing surface that Corfe exploited to the full by playing some great possession football. Our dedicated band of travelling supporters saw a Chris Inman cross nd Leigh Spencer, who tapped in. Pete Thompson won a free kick, then took it himself and curled the ball around the wall to score at the far post. A rare mistake by Ricky Sykes saw his back pass intercepted and Lacy pulled a goal back against the run of play. A quality Pete Thompson cross made the goal keeper ap the ball into Greg Arnlold’s path, he smashed it home. Half time 1-3. More of the same in the second half. Ashley Ayley returned from a spell at Poole Borough to strengthen our team. A Chris Inman free kick found Leigh Spencer, who headed the ball back across to Steve Morris who headed home, 1-4. A quality inswinging corner by Chris Inman found Leigh Spencer yet again, who headed his second, 1-5. A Greg Arnold 40 yard drive (left foot hammer) beat a ailing goalkeeper, 1-6. A Leigh Spencer

through ball found Steve Morris on a well timed forward run, who rounded the goalkeeper calmly and nished the game off, 1-7. This took our home and away aggregate score against Kingston Lacy to 17-3. Can we play them every week? Although this was a ‘goalfest’, we must mention superb performances from our defenders and goalkeeper, who had their lively forwards covered almost all game. Man of the match: Leigh Spencer. 100 Club winners for our December draw. £25 Mikey Hawe’s lovely new wife Angela. £12 my lovely mum Gill Hunt. £7 Craig Moore’s lovely mum Maria. Girl power this month. Tickets are still available for the rest of the season! As there have been no games played yet this year, due to the terrible weather, it gives me a chance to thank our valuable sponsors for their support. Many of you will know Dave Andrews, our fantastic local car mechanic service. What you may not know is that he supports many charities and has been very kind and generous with his support of Corfe Mullen Utd. Thanks to him, our substitutes are no longer left in the cold during games. We now have superb warm suits for them all to wear.

He has also supplied us all with training tops. As we rise through the leagues, the facilities we have to supply get more expensive! We have had to supply dug-outs for both teams so a sizeable donation by Ross Huey at Dorset Farm Butchers enabled us to place a large deposit for a set from NBB School Shelters, who made and delivered them without charging the full price – saving us thousands of pounds! Very generous gestures of which we are most grateful.

Life Begins Are you REALLY ready for romance?

It’s that time of the year when we just can’t avoid the subject of romance, from the heart shaped decorations fluttering in shop windows to those indulgent dinner-for-two recipes that appear in your local paper. This annual overdose of hearts and flowers can provoke a range of different reactions, depending on your age, situation or mindset. If you’re a teenager expecting your first Valentine card, the 14th February can be a time of excitement. Alternatively if you’re a singleton marooned at home with a ready meal for one, the day can be a depressing experience. Couples in long-term relationships may have more mixed feelings about St Valentine’s Day. Depending on whether you are a ‘glass half full’ or a ‘glass half empty’ kind of person, you will either see the 14th February as the perfect opportunity to show you care, or as an occasion that highlights the lack of romance in your relationship for the remaining 364 days of the year. 26

Of course, there are a lucky few who don’t need St Valentine’s Day to kick-start their romantic feelings: take David and Lauren Blair, who earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for renewing their wedding vows over 100 times, or Ravi Viswanathan, who paid over £25,000 at auction for a bottle of vintage champagne to celebrate his 10th wedding anniversary. If you must, even take American farmer Dick Kleis, who flew his wife over farmland in a plane to show her a birthday message he’d written out – you guessed it – in cow dung. With Mills and Boon romantic novels published in 26 different languages and sold in 109 countries world-wide, it would seem that we can’t get enough of romance, but while it’s great to fantasise about other people’s love-inspired exploits, we’re sometimes less comfortable about experiencing

by Kate McLelland them ourselves, in real life. When football fan James Miller stripped down to his underwear and did a Cupid-style streak across the pitch, firing roses from a bow and arrow in tribute to his girlfriend, it didn’t have the effect he anticipated: she was so embarrassed that she dumped him. I know how James must have felt when his romantic gesture misfired. Last year on February 14th my partner of fifteen years rang me from work to say he’d booked a table at a new restaurant I’d spotted in town. “It’ll be like a proper date,” he promised. Although it was exciting to dress up and go out on the spur of the moment, the whole thing ran out of steam pretty quickly: within half an hour we were discussing how to fix a leaky tap in the bathroom. Our night out may not have been the height of romance, but on reflection it summed up the comfortable place we have reached in our relationship. It’s sad that St Valentine’s Day has lost its excitement for many of us, but I still believe it’s worth celebrating. Of course, there are those who condemn the 14th February for its overt commercialism, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to show that you care. Remember farmer Dick Kleis and make the best of the resources you have to hand … however, Dear Reader, if you want your relationship to last, I would advise you not to take his example too literally.

ASK THE AGENT... Jason Spiers, the owner of Richards Estate Agents in Corfe Mullen, has been an agent for over 20 years. Let us know any questions you may have about moving and he’ll answer them for you. Hi Jason A previous owner of my flat significantly altered the layout, and it no longer corresponds to the original plan in the lease. Is this a problem? Dean Kirkley Hi Dean, In a word, yes. The lease itself is a key legal document. The sort of inconsistencies and anomalies that might have been overlooked years ago, are no longer acceptable. You are aware of the inconsistency, so can rectify the situation. Nothing is more frustrating than discovering it after you have found a buyer! Unfortunately, this happens quite regularly – often when the alterations were made by a previous owner without a new lease plan drawn up.

For a FREE no obligation quote, Call Malcolm on 01202 527005 or 07779 540308 www.dry-carpet-cleaning.co.uk Email: dorset@bone-dry.co.uk

Cash buyers may still proceed even though the lease plan is defective. The problems arise if the buyer needs a mortgage. Solicitors act in the lender’s best interests as well as the buyer’s and they will probably require the updated lease plan. A minor legal irritant for the owner of a flat in an ordinary building can become a serious issue in a listed building, where it is a criminal offence to make significant alterations without the proper consents. If you are selling a leasehold flat make sure that the layout and configuration correspond to the lease plan – if not, consult your solicitor about having the plan updated. In a listed property, as well as updating the plan, you’ll need to get retrospective building consent. As long as the alterations to the flat aren’t completely outrageous it’s possible but it will take time. Apply for this before putting your property on the market rather than discovering halfway through a sale and possibly losing your buyer! Hope that helps.

Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. Do I have the right to work flexibly, when I return from maternity leave? No, you do not have an automatic right to return to work and work in a more flexible way. What you have is a right to request to work more flexibly. If your request is in respect of the child you have given birth to and you have or expect to have responsibility for the child’s upbringing and are making the application in order to care for that child; then provided you are also employed, have 26 weeks’ continuous employment at the date of your request and have not made another request to work flexibly within the preceding 12 months, you will be Dee Woodcock eligible. My father died recently leaving shares worth £20,000. Do I need to get a Grant of Probate in order to sell them? Obtaining a Grant of Probate is the responsibility of the Executors of your Late Father’s Estate. The Executors can appoint a firm of solicitors to handle probate administration and to take on the responsibility for these assets. A Grant will be required when the person who died leaves over £5,000, stocks and shares, insurance policies, property or land in their own name or as tenants in common. However a Grant may

You can then make a formal request to change the hours you work, the times you are required to work and/or to work from a different location, i.e. home. You should submit your written application to your employer setting out the work pattern that you would like, specifying your entitlement to make it, together with any effect that you anticipate the proposed work pattern would have on your employer’s business and how such effects might be accommodated or addressed in practice. Within 28 days of receiving your request, your employer must arrange a meeting with you to discuss the application and within 14 days of the meeting your employer must write to you to either agree to the new work pattern, or provide you with grounds of rejection and set out the appeal procedure. Charles Haslett Physiotherapy At Physio-Solutions my ethos is to help people with various mobility problems stemming from a soft tissue / muscular origin to return to their chosen sport or work routine as soon as possible. I can also advise on practical exercise therapy for rehabilitation purposes or in order to improve fitness levels. Treatments after assessment may consist of weight-bearing or non weight-bearing exercises, 1-2-1 exercise programmes, graded exercise progression (post-op), massage techniques as appropriate (Sports/Remedial/Swedish) , ultrasound (electrotherapy) which is useful in breaking down scar tissue.

My interest in sporting injuries resulted from my own experiences as a highly competitive runner both on road and country. I am familiar with Corfe Mullen and the surrounding area, having grown- up here and attended both Corfe Mullen (Lockyer’s) school and Lytchett Minster School. (Many years ago☺ In recent years I have been practicing Physiotherapy in the Bournemouth and Westbourne area but have recently moved “back to my roots” and look forward to serving the local community.

I have many years experience in using practical physical approaches to restore function and Please feel free wellbeing to people involved in a variety of sports, to call me for a for example, horse-riding , tennis, golf, football, consultation. rugby, hockey, athletics, distance running, skiing, the martial arts and gymnastics. Tues 18th to Sat 22nd February 2014

The idea behind NightOwls events started after a visit to a nightclub where they seemed to cater for the older teenager, the over 25’s. They just seemed to want a good boogie, with music they have heard before, and with people over 25. So far, there have been two discos, and the 15th February will be the 3rd, and hopefully as successful as the others. We kick off at 8pm, fully licensed bar, and will carry on till midnight.
