Part Nine For those readers just discovering this series on the canal now in its 9th part, I will explain why the canal is important and why the Gazette is doing this series. The dam that created the Central Canal was built on the White River in 1836 and the Town of Broad Ripple grew up around it. It is why we are here today. For years the canal has supplied the City of Indianapolis with 60% of its fresh water which is processed for our clean water supply.

While we were talking again about the head end of the canal up in Broad Ripple, I mentioned the crumbling Westfield Boulevard bridge that crosses the canal. “Oh! So there’s a bridge, the Westfield bridge over the canal, that looks like it is going to fall into the canal.” I started. “Who’s in charge of that bridge? Who would fix that bridge?” Ed Malone, Director of Water Production for Citizens, replied, “DPW. Department of Public Works. And they just did an underwater survey at that bridge. They’ve done it now a couple times in the last couple of years, where they’ve actually had divers go into the canal and monitor or investigate the conditions of that bridge. But, that is a DPW structure. Meaning Department of Public Works for the City of Indianapolis.” “What about the...when the banks were redone in Broad Ripple a number of years ago and the bridge was reworked, the old Monon bridge,” I asked. “This may have nothing to do with the water company. Big Boulders were put in. Big rocks were put in as a retaining wall and they look original from something, I’m not sure what.” “You talking about here?” asked Ed [pointing at picture of the Monon bridge over the canal]. That’s not us. That was Greenways. If I remember correctly. All of that the Broad Ripple Village Association and Greenways did along the towpath along the...I call it the north bank, I don’t know what you...it’s north or west bank cause it’s kinda running on a angle there, was done by Greenways. Now we have done some remediation in that area

Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist for this issue is Thomas Frazier. “I love Indianapolis, especially at night. In my work I try to capture the vibrancy and vitality of the diners, drive-ins and dive bars after dark. I began this project in the summer of 2015 and continue to find more and more great images that I want to paint. I grew up in Ireland and am particularly drawn to the Americana neon signs on all these great Indianapolis establishments.” “I am a Butler Graduate and currently spend my days looking after my two young daughters. Painting is a great therapeutic relief after somewhat hectic days! I am educated as an engineer but my interest has always been in art. My work is available at The Bungalow in Broad Ripple and the Illinois Food Emporium at 56th and Illinois Street. Feel free to email me at ThomasFrazerArt@gmail.com” To celebrate the 11th year of the Broad Ripple Gazette we started featuring a year of local artists by allowing them to interpret our banner, while incorporating the words “The Broad Ripple Gazette”. I have pictures. All kinds of conduit there.” “That’s not us,” said Ed again. “We did not pour the hardscape. In other words, we...” “Or put the utilities in the bank probably...,” I added. “No, that’s correct,” said Ed. “We actually discourage the hardscape and the reason we discourage the hardscape is exactly that. The hardscape creates runoff that then has to get somewhere and it was washing it out. So, when you do hardscape you’ve got to make sure you know where the water’s going. We’ve actually remediated that area I think you’re going to show us [in a picture].” “Yeah, I think that has been redone,” I said. “I was just curious as to what all of the pipes and electrical conduits are in there. Seems like a bad idea, that close to the bank.” “Yeah, those aren’t ours,” said Ed. “What happened there was because of the hardscape, it increased the erosion, naturally caused the runoff to come down this way and then it eroded, these utilities were right at the edge of the sidewalk and it washed them out. So we had to come back in and restabilize that area. That’s what you see them doing there, in fact.”

The Patachou Foundation’s Speaker’s Forum Will Feature Jordyn Lexton of Drive Change

On February 18 at 7:00pm, The Patachou Foundation will hold its third Speaker’s Forum Series at Park Tudor School. The featured speaker is former Rikers Island teacher Jordyn Lexton, who has created Drive Change in Brooklyn, NY to rehabilitate young adults facing the detrimental impact of the criminal justice system. Lexton will be introduced at the event by Mayor Joe Hogsett, who plans to appoint a full-time staff member dedicated to food security in Indianapolis. Founded in 2013, The Patachou Foundation feeds at-risk and food insecure children within the Indianapolis community. While feeding, The Patachou Foundation also seeks to increase children’s awareness, knowledge and enthusiasm about what they are eating. Thus far, The Foundation has prepared and served more than 16,500 meals to food insecure children and has taught 700 student hours with a focus on healthy food choices. The Patachou Foundation is also supported by Public Greens, the only for-profit restaurant in the country to give 100% of their profits to a hunger based not-for-profit: The Patachou Foundation. Like The Patachou Foundation, Lexton believes that food has always been a powerful equalizer. Both organizations seek to make an impact on the community through the power of good food and human connection. Drive Change builds and operates food trucks as a tool to give opportunity for young adults coming out of the justice system to live fully-employed, crime-free lives. By employing the food truck industry as an innovative re-entry model, she is able to reduce the negative stigma of incarceration, support young people and provide access to opportunity. Three tickets are available for the event on Eventbrite.com: Individual Speakers Forum tickets are $50; a $200 ticket includes a pre-event cocktail reception with Jordyn Lexton and general admission; a $250 ticket includes a private dinner at Napolese Pizzeria with Jordyn Lexton and general

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Spat breaks out over Flood Wall plan deal after Butler Tarkington protests The newly revised flood wall plan endorsed by the City has pleased the Warfleigh neighborhood group but not those in Butler Tarkington and Rocky Ripple. The Save the Warfleigh group supports the revised Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction Project (“project”) which seeks to remove from the flood plain approximately 2,100 homes and businesses. Removing from the flood plain the approximately 4,000 people who live in these homes protects them from the very real and present threat of severe flooding according to the group. It also protects them from the financial burden of annual premiums for flood insurance, which, for some are in the range of $8,000 - $10,000 per year. The Butler-Tarkington neighborhood apparently does not support the City’s decision and recently distributed a call to once again delay the project. They claim that the Westfield Boulevard alignment creates damage to the Town of Rocky Ripple in a major flood event and effectively prevents Rocky Ripple from future flood protection.

On January 14th Bettie Finch, along with son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sharon Stanford, made their annual trek from Resolute Cove, Alaska, where they have lived for 46 years, to Broad Ripple. They had to have their “tenderloin fix” at Plump’s Last Shot. Thomas at the age of 15 while attending Whiteland High School in 1964 constructed a short wave radio so that he could hear Butler Basketball. He is a huge fan. That radio earned him the Strategic Air Command Science Award presented by U.S.A.F. Maj. Gen. Curtis LeMay. The couple brought Jonathan and Bobby Plump a can of their own home smoked Coho Silver Salmon and though he wasn’t there Bobby did talk to them on the phone which they said was one of the highlights of their trip. They will be back January 16th, 2017, to celebrate Bettie’s birthday and get their tenderloin.

Wine Winners

The only way to know if you like a wine is to taste it. That’s why free samplings at local stores or tasting events that offer a variety of styles and wineries are good ways to find out what you like before you buy a bottle. Another good source is a wine competition. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is the largest judging of American wines in the world. This year judges tasted over 7000 bottles! The results are a great way to find “consumer friendly” wines in a variety of varietals and price ranges. These bottles were sampled by dozens of people against similar wines. Judges award top prizes in each varietal and price range, and from those terrific wines they select the “best of the best” including:

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the middle row which contains 1-2-4-6-8-9. The 5 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 8-9. The 5 in the center section eliminates the space to the right of the 4. The only place left is above the 2. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

While I wouldn’t call myself “The World’s Greatest Cook”, I feel that I can hold my own in the kitchen. However, as many of you may relate, I get stuck in my rut of the same five or six dinners from time to time. Recently I have added several new recipes to my repertoire by using just one new ingredient: Spaghetti squash! Not only is this winter vegetable very versatile in its uses, it is also quite nutritious to its counterpart of traditional pasta. Calories: Spaghetti squash is significantly lower in calories than regular pasta. One cup serving of cooked spaghetti squash has 42 calories, while one cup of cooked pasta has 221 calories. A whopping 180 calories difference per cup! And in my opinion after adding a low fat sauce/veggies/and or lean protein you will not notice the difference (I actually prefer the taste) and have yourself a low-cal and extremely nutritious meal. Carbohydrates: Unlike many, I am not a “carb hater”. We all need them and active people even more so. However, most of us get enough or more likely too much of them, so if you are looking to cut back, spaghetti squash has only 10 grams of carbs per cup as opposed to 42 grams of pasta. Nutrients: Pasta has an edge over spaghetti squash in the protein department with 8 grams as opposed to 1 gram. However, they both have about 2.5 grams of fiber, which is vital for regular digestion. Spaghetti squash has an impressive 143 grams of water per cup which can help in daily water intake. It also contains about 457 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A and 52 percent of vitamin C, which can help prevent free radical damage to cells. Spaghetti squash is also rich in the B vitamins, folate, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc. This vegetable clearly has a lot going for it! I think what keeps many from trying this versatile squash is in its preparation. But I ASSURE you that if I can do it anyone can. Its honestly so easy that I love making it more than just about anything else. To make spaghetti squash, halve a squash lengthwise. Scrape out the seeds, place face down on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Once the squash is cool enough to handle, run a fork through the flesh to create spaghetti strands. They will literally fall right out of the shell! For something even more creative, try playing around with recipes that use the actual shell as a bowl. Here is one of my favorites from ifoodreal.com. Not only is it delicious, it is vegetarian and gluten free. Ingredients: 1 small spaghetti squash 4 tsp salsa 1 chopped avocado 2 large eggs Ketchup or hot sauce optional Prepare spaghetti squash as listed above for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 425. Using a fork separate the strands and leave them in the shells add in the salsa and avocado and press lightly to make the inside as even as possible. Then break one egg into each shell and bake it for 15-20 minutes depending on runniness preferences. Eat this meal straight out of the shell… DELICIOUS! Calories: 269, Fat: 16g, Carbs, 25g, Fiber 6g, Protein 9g If you make this recipe I would love for you to email me with your review and even a picture  There are literally hundreds of recipes that you can find online to add variety to your palette. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Beating Back Winter’s Blahs With the onset of winter, I plan my time differently. The long, dark evenings and nights prevent my desire to garden or walk in the neighborhood. Restlessness, melancholy, and depression stand behind each door waiting for me to open it. I continually challenge myself to keep those “bad boys” at bay. You may ask how, and it may be different for you, but I my answer is to keep my hands busy with lots of activities in the house. I don’t want to spend money or go out at night. Instead, I focus on enjoying my home. This is particularly good as I’ve fit so much into it in the other seasons. Each year I make a list of tasks to be done: weeding out and organizing rooms, drawers, closets, collections, and books. I make myself a schedule and plan for where discards will be go. Letting go of things is a goal, not because of aging but because of clutter. My mantra is that if I get rid of something, I can bring a new treasure into my surroundings. I know that is counter-productive, but it works for me. “Busy hands are happy hands” has always been my motto. Doing a crossword puzzle starts my day. As soon as November comes, the jigsaw puzzle table goes up. A puzzle is constantly in the works. My favorites are 1,000 piece puzzles but every once in a while, I will take a break and do a 350 or 500 piece puzzle. I don’t glue them together at the end but give the task of tearing a puzzle apart to the person who puts the last piece in place. I have found that if I have a puzzle out, anyone in the room usually tries to find a piece and add to the picture. Knitting, crocheting, crafting, reading, and mending all become part of my long winter days and evenings. Playing board games join the mix when we have company. From Yahtzee or Scrabble to Dominoes (Mexican Train), I can usually match a game to our visitors. I try to shut off the TV unless a sport game claims the evening. I hope you can find your winter’s pleasure. You don’t have to sit in front of the TV screen or wonder what the rest of the world is doing. By the way, the State Fair entry book is posted online in One of Brandt’s paintings entered in the Fair. January. Check the categories and make a plan to enter the Fair in 2016. Write a letter. Try a new hobby. Sort through old photos and make an album. Take a class. Invite a neighbor for coffee or tea. You don’t have to be trapped in your four walls. Look at your home as a creative playground. Enjoy it and keep warm. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Ellen Schwartz and Ghega Scolari own Clara K. and Cartabella at 825 Westfield Boulevard.

Cartabella Cards & Clara K. By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Cartabella Cards & Invitations and Clara K. (A Little Gift Shop) share a modest shop located at 825 Westfield Boulevard in Broad Ripple. Respective owners, Ghega Scolari and Ellen Schwartz, sell a variety of greeting cards, wedding invitations, stationary, artisan jewelry, natural products, silk scarves, hand crafted leather purses and more. They recently described their professional backgrounds and how their long-time friendship included operating a retail business together. Ghega Scolari has a unique background that has helped add a unique edge to her personalized invitation business. “I was a textile designer in Lake Como in the northern part of Italy before I moved to Florence where I worked as a graphic illustrator and textile designer for 11 years, creating scarves and ties,” she explains. Mrs. Scolari moved to Indianapolis when her husband, who worked for Eli Lilly in Florence, was transferred here. When she first came to Indianapolis and her kids were still young, her creative drive motivated her to

design Christmas cards at home. After much encouragement from friends and family, she started her own business, Cartabella, through which she now designs wedding invitations, announcements, programs, place cards and thank you notes in both Italian and English. Ellen Schwartz’s background also brings her a unique perspective on the retail business. After growing up in New York, she followed her middle school sweetheart, now husband, to Indiana University. After college, she was a K-12 teacher and taught junior high and high school students in Chicago for some time until her husband was recruited back to Indiana for work. Despite her lack of retail training, she has many forms of inspiration for her shop. “I get my ideas from things that I have and love or have been given as gifts. We’ve added items to the shop slowly, getting ideas and inspiration from customers’ suggestions, trends, traveling, etc. Some of my lines include French Kande, Ayala Bar, Michal Golan, Spencer Peterman, Houston Llew, Natori, S’well, Lokai and many more,” said Mrs. Schwartz. She tries out different products in the shop and adjusts her inventory based on what her clients like the most. When shopping at Cartabella and Clara K., it is clear that Ghega Scolari and Ellen Schwartz are not only business partners, but also long-time friends. They met about 16 years ago and their friendship quickly grew into a strong bond. So when Ghega suggested that she and Ellen share a shop together, Ellen knew it would be a fun and exciting experience for both of them. “January will be our second year working together. We feel that it is through our relationship that our customers have such an enjoyable experience shopping in our shop,” Mrs. Scolari noted. More information is available at: www.facebook.com/clarakcartabella and on Instagram at: @clarak_cartab. Inquiries can be answered at: ghega2@mac.com and ellenindy60@gmail.com. Their hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. They are closed Sunday and Monday. You can discover that one of a kind artisanal gift for Valentine’s Day or any occasion when you visit Cartabella and Clara K. on the canal in Broad Ripple.
