On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Applebee’s in Broad Ripple (1072 Broad Ripple Avenue; 317-2554839) is hosting Dining to Donate to benefit First Book of Greater Indianapolis, which provides new books to underprivileged children by raising funds to provide book grants to qualified programs and schools in the metropolitan Indianapolis area. From 11 a.m. to midnight, Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of any meal purchased with the First Book Dining to Donate voucher. The Dining to Donate voucher is available on First Book of Greater Indianapolis’ Facebook page, facebook.com/FirstBookOfGreaterIndianapolis, and website, www.firstbook.org/ greaterindy. (317) 514-7373 having a great meal and fun time at Applebee’s, folks can help reduce childhood illiteracy in Indy. Just $20 puts eight books into the hands of kids and $50 provides a full year of bedtime stories to a family in need. We hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to put new books in the hands of underprivileged children in Indianapolis.” In 2013, First Book of Greater Indianapolis distributed 79,890 books to approximately 50,000 needy children in the metropolitan Indianapolis area. First Book of Greater Indianapolis received funds from the Junior League of Indianapolis, the Target Corporation, the Willard Bridgewater Children’s Fund of the Johnson County Community Foundation and individual donors. The grants are used to purchase brand new, high quality books which the programs and schools distribute directly to the children they serve. In addition to book grants, First Book of Greater Indianapolis secured two truckloads of books to distribute free-of-charge to qualified schools and programs. To be eligible to register for First Book, groups must be either a Title I school or classroom or a program/school/classroom where at least 70 percent of the children served are from low-income families. First Book of Greater Indianapolis is raising funds to award grants to programs and schools in the Indianapolis metropolitan area so they may acquire books children can take home and keep. Registered programs and schools are eligible to acquire books through the First Book National Book Bank distributions and the First Book Marketplace. By making new, highquality books available on an ongoing basis, First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education.
