MicroVote - voting technology on Guilford By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com MicroVote CEO and owner Mandy Miller recently spoke on the record about her election equipment and support company. “We sell and service electronic voting machines. We are currently in 50 of the 92 counties in Indiana and in 47 of the 95 counties in Tennessee and starting to expand into Kentucky,” Ms. Miller mentioned. She explained how clients determine what voting technology they use. “The counties actually purchase the equipment, so they own their own machines. They decide on which ones to use. They have the opportunity to be self-sufficient or we offer end-to-end service from designing the ballots all the way through to tabulation on election night.” Her career path at MicroVote has been uncontested. “I started in 1996 as a customer service representative. Computer software training was my background and I taught our customers our software platform. In 2001, I was promoted to director of operations and then in 2015, I became the chief operating officer. In 2018, I was offered MicroVote the opportunity to purchase the business from the 6366 Guilford Ave [E4] previous owner, Jim Ries. www.microvote.com A local company, Carson Manufacturing, has manufactured the voting machines MicroVote (317) 257-4900 has distributed since their beginning in 1982. Carson also manufactures police sirens and circuit boards. Ms. Miller noted the rewards of her work. “It’s very difficult to find a job that you like going to everyday. I’ve always looked forward to working here every day. It’s always been a very flexible work environment and you get to be very involved in all the aspects of the business.” We cross-train our employees in

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH

Park attracts tourists Boating on White River became popular in the 1890’s. Canoeing was a great attraction, and as a result of this great interest the Green City, Aquatic, and Broad Ripple boat clubs were formed. River steamers were also a major attraction during this period. The Sunshine, which was probably the best known steamer, was shipped to Broad Ripple from Eagle Lake near Warsaw, Indiana, in 1897. Frank Norvial was the captain from 1897-1905. The Sunshine was first owned by Denny Sullivan who also owned the Green City canoe and rowboat houses located where the Weaver Garden Shop now stands [Note: Weaver’s Lawn and Garden was across the street from Flanner Buchanan. It closed in 2018]. The Union Traction Company bought the boat along with Broad Ripple Park in 1911. This 30-50 passenger boat usually traveled about 4 1/2 - 5 miles north on White River from Broad Ripple Park. On the weekends, the Sunshine made a shorter trip to the Haverstick farms, two miles up the river. Several disasters marked the Sunshine’s life. In 1904, the Sunshine sank after hitting an underwater ice mass. The boat was raised and restored, only to sink again on August 7, 1905. This

disaster was believed to have been caused by the collapse of the overloaded top deck. The boat was returning from the Haverstick farms when a sudden shift of the crowd on the top deck resulted in the breakage of the paddle wheel chain, causing the boat to list to one side. Captain H. S. Crockett warned the passengers of the boat’s leaning, but to no avail. At this time the pilot, “Dutch” Metzger, headed the ship for the west bank of White River. A second list occurred when a girl waving a handkerchief went by in a canoe. All of the men aboard the Sunshine rushed to that side of the boat to

see her, and while only a few feet from the shore, the Sunshine sank. The Moonriver, a later excursion boat, had a specialty of serving smoked hickory ribs that were barbecued in special pits at each end of the upper deck. The boat continued its cruises until 1938. The Perseverance was another White River steamer at this time. Built by John Fitch, the Perseverance performed the unique act of unexpectedly diving over the Broad Ripple dam without a single loss of life. This completes Chapter 11, part 3 of the booklet. Chapter 12 will appear in a future issue. - AH

many areas so they can be involved in many parts of the business. We have very dedicated and loyal employees. We do not see a lot of turnover. Everybody gets the opportunity to do lots of things, so they stay engaged in the business. Every time there is a project, we collaborate on it. After 23 years of working at MicroVote, I’m very proud to now be the owner.” With their employees being cross-trained in various aspects of MicroVote processes, they not only gain valuable knowledge in helping their customers, but also learn a broader understanding of the company’s operations. MicroVote’s role in elections is multi-faceted. “We help our clients on everything from creating ballots, conducting poll worker training, public tests, election day support, to distributing electronic Poll Pads used to check in voters. We begin working on elections months ahead of time. For the (May 7th) primary election, we began this process in February, getting ballots ready and getting the approval of the county. The next step is testing. A public test is required in each county prior to each election, the public is invited to attend. You are not only testing the voting machines but also the election night tabulation system. Then WalkIn Absentee voting begins, which leads you up to Election Day. There is a lot of preparation that goes on prior to Election Day, months of preparation,” she explained. “We are also a distributor for the KNOWiNK Poll Pad. That is an Apple iPad that is used to check in voters during absentee voting and Election Day. By using the Poll Pad and the Infinity Voting machine we can electronically check the voter in, allow them to vote, and offer a voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT). The state of Indiana is going to be using the VVPAT (Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) in a pilot program this November and every one of our 50 customers will use it across the state in the 2020 election. It really only adds one additional step to the voting process and will ease the minds of those who do not trust electronic voting machines,” Ms. Miller noted. According to MicroVote’s website, www.microvote.com/ products, the VVPAT is a printer used in conjunction with a DRE (Direct Record Electronic) voting system. It is an add-on feature that can be used with the photo by Mario Morone MicroVote Infinity Voting Panel. MicroVote Infinity Voting Panel (VP-1) It provides a paper record of the voter’s selections. It is a paper solution with some significant benefits other systems may not have. “Our complete end-to-end system helps the election staff tabulate and certify their election results. It also helps to make it a very seamless process, making it easy, quick and more efficient for the voter,” Ms. Miller noted. She concluded, “Everything we do is to ensure that your election day runs smooth and that everyone has a positive election experience from the poll workers and voters to the election staff,” which is a point few voters could debate. MicroVote’s knowledge of related-elective technology and development keeps security, accuracy and privacy at the forefront. That is a motto that CEO Mandy Miller and her staff will continue to successfully run on.

Broad Ripple Garden Club dedicating a Blue Star Memorial

Broad Ripple Garden Club is proud to announce it will be dedicating a Blue Star Memorial on August 7, 2019 at 2:00 at the John W. Hensel Government Center in Carmel, Indiana. Our garden club has dreamed of dedicating a Blue Star Memorial for a couple of years, and through hard work and determination, we are so proud of this upcoming event. In the past two years, Broad Ripple Garden Club members have donated monies to make this Blue Star Memorial become a reality. The National Garden Club of Indiana also provides grants to local clubs to help with the cost of the memorial; we are happy to be a recipient of such a grant. The National Garden Club Guidelines for the Blue Star Memorial state, “At the close of World War II, National Garden Clubs, like all public-spirited groups, were seeking a suitable means of honoring our servicemen and women. Garden Club members visualized a living memorial, preferring to help beautify and preserve the country these men and women had fought for. Blue Star Memorials have been in existence since 1945, and while it originally began to honor World War II veterans, it enlarged its mission in 1951 to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.” Mary Baker, Broad Ripple Garden Club Blue Star Memorial Chairman, and Broad Ripple Garden Club President, Phyllis Grzeskowiak, are pleased to be working with Doug Callahan, Clay Township Trustee, and the City of Carmel on this project. Trustee Doug Callahan and the City of Carmel have been invaluable to our project, we are so grateful to have them working with us to make this dedication memorable. Please join us on August 7, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the John W. Hensel Government Center, 10701 N. College Avenue, as we celebrate our servicemen and women.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Indiana State Fair Aug. 2 - 18

I love every bit of the Indiana State Fair, especially that there is music around every corner. You can always find bluegrassy traditional folk music in the Pioneer Village Building. It’s a great place to sit on a church pew and take a break. Pioneer Village is my favorite corner of the Fairgrounds. Tell them all I said hello! The shows on the aptly named Free Stage are always big fun also. Most shows start at 7:30 pm, unless otherwise noted. The Free Stage is located on the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds, near the 4-H Exhibit Halls. • Friday, August 2: Ace Frehley, co-founding member of KISS • Sunday, August 4: Chase Rice • Monday, August 5: Air Supply • Tuesday, August 6: Indiana Wind Symphony • Wednesday, August 7: SWITCHFOOT • Thursday, August 8: KC & The Sunshine Band • Friday, August 9: Pop 2000 Tour, hosted by Lance Bass, featuring O-Town, Aaron Carter, & Ryan Cabrera • Saturday, August 10: David Nail • Sunday, August 11 (6 pm): Matthew West & Francesca Battistelli

Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

We offer Health Coverage for:

Balance Balance in life is important. I never gave the concept of ‘balance’ much consideration until bipolar disorder emerged within me in 1998. I was catapulted to the sky and driven into the ground (repeatedly). So I now seek ‘balance’ and embrace the concept. Below is a poem about staying centered through the outer reaches of thought and through the immediate palpable moment:

contemplating the infinite while living in the now one hand in the sky on hand on the plow

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 6 in the left section on the top row in the medium puzzle containing 1-2-3-5-9. The 6 in the center section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 9. The 3 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 3. The 6 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space above the 3. The only place left is above the 5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

RED HOT WINE

It was 88 outdoors and 94 in my car on the drive home one night last week. Add the humidity and it felt like it was 104. Yet despite the heat in the air and the sweat on my brow, I still wanted a red wine. Strange? Perhaps to those who only drink red when it’s cold and white when it’s hot. I drink both year round. I love white wine on a cold snowy day and this night I was going to enjoy a dry rich red. What to choose? I figured a red from a warm dry climate where people drink it year round would be a good choice. Argentina came to mind as I remembered a visit to the Mendoza region a decade ago. The trip included several days exploring the vineyards and tasting the wines of the Catena Family who excel in the production of Malbec. The grape originated in France but thrives in Argentina where the soil and sun bring out its spicy dark black fruit flavors. Catena offers a number of labels and its ALAMOS Malbec is one of the most reliable and affordable in the market. Jammy flavors of mulberry, blueberry and ginger are lush and lively and offer just enough tooth purpling tannin for a smooth but not grippy finish. This wine drinks well with just about any kind of food too once again making it a wine for all seasons.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Are you a neighborhood hero? After reading an article in IBJ by Jennifer Ping titled, In the words of Fred Rogers, won’t you be my neighbor?, I was inspired to reflect on the man that so many children grew up watching. Now gone, Fred Rogers was a television personality, musician, puppeteer, writer, producer, and Presbyterian minister. Do you remember he was the creator, composer, producer, writer, and host of the preschool television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood? His life was dedicated to a simple message to love and accept your neighbor. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 40 honorary degrees, and a Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame and was recognized in two congressional resolutions. He was ranked number 35 of the TV Guide’s Fifty Greatest TV Stars of All Time. The Smithsonian Institution displays one of his trademark sweaters as a “Treasure of American History”. Is has been more than a decade since Fred Rogers died—2003. To create neighbors in Broad Ripple, Meridian Kessler, SoBro, Glendale, and Warfleigh, we again need to hear his message loud and strong in this decade. Here are some Fred Rogers quotes you might like to share in your neighborhood and with you family: “All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors—in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver. “The underlying message of the Neighborhood is that if somebody cares about you, it’s possible that you’ll care about others. ‘You are special, and so is your neighbor’ - that part is essential: that you’re not the only special person in the world. The person you happen to be with at the moment is loved, too. “When we look for what’s best in the person we happen to be with at the moment, we’re doing what God does, so in appreciating our neighbor, we’re participating in something truly sacred. “The more we can be in a relationship with those who might seem strange to us, the more we can feel like we’re neighbors and all members of the human family.” We can learn so much from Mr. Rogers still. We don’t have to earn all kinds of awards and honors to influence neighborliness and good citizenship. So, you ask, what do I need to do?: • Talk to your neighbors. Learn their names. • Watch out for your neighborhood as if it is your own property. “It’s not my job” should not be in your vocabulary. In reality, we are connected. • Be kind. Check on a neighbor often. • Share your bounty whether it is time, garden produce, or talent. • Serve a neighbor. Don’t hesitate to help someone start their car, mow their lawn if the mower is broken, shovel the snow, or pick up their newspaper and put it on their porch. • Stand up for your neighborhood. Protect it by telling people who don’t share the same values what your neighborhood practices. That’s what Fred did. • Teach good neighborhood manners to the younger generation, like don’t take things that are not yours, which even includes flowers, or, don’t walk on people’s property. • Practice respect for all the people and property on your block. • Participate in your neighborhood association. This not only helps solve problems respectfully but is also builds neighborhood pride.

There are so many acts we can do to make Broad Ripple a shining neighborhood— residents, and business. It is up to each of us to engage and act. In the words of Fred Rogers, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com.
