Chapter Nine

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH

Farmer shakes jail Broad Ripple Village saw great advancement in the business field at the turn of the century. In 1887, the Kingan Meat Packing Company built several ice houses on the river bank just east of the Monon tracks. [NOTE: This is about where McDonald’s is today.] The company chose this site because the ice froze hard here at the widest part of White River. The houses were approximately 40’ by 200’, had no windows, and were connected to White River by ramps on which the ice from the river was carried. The ice houses were a source of employment for the men of Broad Ripple who cut the ice on White River in the winter and stored it in the houses for use in the summer to preserve the meat at the Kingan Plant. The ice was usually cut when it was about 9” thick. Area boys would then drag the cut ice up to the store houses on the river bank. The blocks were packed in sawdust to keep them separated. In the spring, the ice blocks were hauled by flat cars to the Kingan Plant in downtown Indianapolis. The business was operated by a man named Brady until February 2, 1902, when the ice houses burned down. In the late 1880’s or early 1890’s, a jail was built in the community on the northeast corner of Winthrop and Broad Ripple avenues [NOTE: This is where Qdoba is today]. This small 5’ by 12’ by 7’ one-room brick and wood structure, complete with barred windows, was built to house weekend rowdies who came to Broad Ripple. John Morganson, the first town marshal, kept the offenders behind bars during the weekend until they could be tried in court on Monday. The last two Broad Ripple marshals prior to the town’s annexation were Thomas Medsker and Robert DeVault. The great flood of April 1913 swept away the jail roof and weakened the foundations. Even though the roof was repaired soon after, it was not to remain for long. Bob Burford, a 6’ 7” farm hand, indignant about being jailed for

drunkenness and disturbing the peace, began to shake the jail’s rafters until the roof broke loose from its mounting boards. In 1932, after time and decay had destroyed the remains of the Broad Ripple jail, the lot where it stood was cleared. In 1903, Hershel Brenemann opened the Brenemann House, a chicken dinner restaurant, at 6240 North Bellefontaine (Guilford Avenue). In 1920, it was sold and the building was razed. The land was then converted into a parking lot and later was purchased by the Kroger Grocery Company. [NOTE: The parking lot was actually the car lot for Hoster-Roberts Ford. Kroger bought the land around 1954 for the store.]. Elmer Hitchcock opened a photoengraving concern on Broad Ripple Avenue in 1908. It was sold 12 years later to make room for Zivien’s, Broad Ripple’s first department store [NOTE: This is where Warfleigh Barber & Supply is today]. Just prior to the 1910’s, the Buddenbaum Lumber Company was built where the Broad Ripple Lumber Company now stands [NOTE: Today this is Cholita Taqueria and all of the businesses to the rear, along Winthrop]. Broad Ripple was serviced by two telephone exchanges. One was located on the present site of the Broad Ripple Library [NOTE: Today this building is SmallBox.] and was first operated by the five Stegger sisters. The second telephone exchange was located in Dr. Robert Light’s grocery store, on Broad Ripple Avenue. Mrs. Imo McKensie was the first switchboard operator. The two companies merged in 1917. The home of Dr. Robert Light was located where the Roselyn Bakery now stands [NOTE: razed for the parking garage], and his office was on the site of the present Shell gas station at the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue [NOTE: razed for the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market]. The home of Dr. Joseph B. Bates, another physician, was located on the site of the present-day Carter Building, on the southwest corner of Guilford and Westfield Boulevard. Arnholter’s harness shop was located on the southeast corner of Guilford and Westfield Boulevard, where Rudy’s Liquor Store is today [NOTE: This was the longtime home to The Corner Wine Bar.]. A barber shop and the office of Dr. Hesler were located south of the harness shop. A streetcar depot stood on the corner of Broad Ripple and Guilford, where the Pittsburgh Paint Store now stands [NOTE: This is Brothers Bar and Grill today.]. In 1914, after the depot was abandoned, George’s Restaurant was built in its place. Other businesses also competed for a part of the Broad Ripple trade. Among these was Kassebaum’s grocery, hardware, and drygoods store at 924 East Westfield [NOTE: Where the Bungalow is today.]. Additional businesses were Stewart’s Furniture Store, LaRue Heady Grocery, and Jules Medias’ Meat Market. In later years the meat market was closed and Jules Medias opened a men’s clothing store [NOTE: Where Cold Stone Creamery is today.]. This completes Chapter 9 of the booklet. Chapter 10 will appear in a future issue.

85th Annual Fairview Fish Fry, Thursday & Friday, June 6 & 7, 2019, Fairview Presbyterian Church, 46th & Capitol 5:00 – 8:00 pm Eighty-four years ago Fairview Presbyterian Church needed a new roof. The men decided they could get a rail car load of shingles, get a group of men together and put on the roof at cost. But how were they to pay for the shingles? That’s when the women decided to host a fish fry. Those fish fries have continued through the decades and have helped out in many ways. It is a feeder into our church; many new members got their first exposure to Fairview out on the lawn at a fish fry. Food, Fun, Faith and Friends, a great combination on an evening in June or anytime. It feeds the community; not only as a long-standing community event but proceeds are donated to community organizations who serve our neighbors. Recent recipients include: Dayspring, Julian Center, MLK Multi-service center, Second Helpings, Wheeler Mission, Coburn Place, Gennesaret Free Clinic, School 43, and A Caring Place Adult Daycare. We have found other ways to fix our roof and now we want to help our community partners. This year we plan to support organizations working to promote mental wellness in our community. Indiana’s oldest church fish fry will adhere to old traditions; still the best hot fish in town and we will serve the Calkins family secret salad dressing and lots of homemade desserts and delicious side dishes. An adult meal is just $10 and includes fish or chicken—plus two sides and tea or lemonade. Of course, one can choose additional a la carte sides and canned soda or bottled water. And don’t forget the amazing a la carte desserts packaged up ready for you to eat on site or take home! Kids meals (for children 5-10) are $5 and include one side and tea or lemonade. Children under 5 eat for free! Please join us, and let our family feed your family on June 6th and 7th!

Jiffy Lube of Indiana to Be Honored for Exceptional Commitment to the Arts

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America, announced today that Jiffy Lube of Indiana will be honored this fall with Americans for the Arts’ national Arts and Business Partnership Award. Presented annually, the Arts and Business Partnership Awards—formerly called the BCA 10: Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts in America awards—honor 10 U.S. companies, a business leader, and an arts and business partnership for their exceptional commitment to the arts through grants, local partnerships, volunteer programs, matching gifts, sponsorships, and board membership. The awards will be presented by Americans for the Arts on October 3, 2019, at a black-tie gala at the Central Park Boathouse in New York City. Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s mural initiative, “Every Part Matters,” has created original, artist-designed murals on the exterior walls of nine oil change locations in central Indiana, and is on track to add five more murals in 2019 plus several in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area over the next two years. In addition, the company’s support of original music and other arts initiatives makes Jiffy Lube of Indiana a local leader in forging innovative partnerships that both enrich the arts scene and enhance their business. For more information about Jiffy Lube of Indiana and the Arts and Business Partnership Awards, please contact Jillian Thomas at jillian@dittoepr.com.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle

Hello darlings! I’m excited about porch music season. Here is a little roundup of regularly scheduled outdoor music and Josh Kaufman’s album release shows. I hope to see you out and about. I’ll be the one wearing the attractive orthopedic boot. I broke a bone in my ankle and don’t intend on letting it slow me down. As a friend reminded me, at least it’s not during State Fair season!

Josh Kaufman NDOXO Vol 1 album release concerts Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave - 21+, 7:30 & 9:30 each day, $25-35

Random Ripplings It was a rainy start for the first Broad Ripple Third Thursday Art Walk held on May 16th. Indianapolis’s own Josh Kaufman, winner of The Voice season six has released a new album, NDOXO Vol 1, and is celebrating with two nights of shows at the Jazz Kitchen. The album that channels his beautiful vocal work into a gracefully catchy blend of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and classic pop. I credit Josh with getting me to watch The Voice. I was a doubter, regularly telling people that more talented musicians had played at CATH and slept on my sofa than were on the shows. As it turns out The Voice features musicians that have been paying their dues and playing gigs and sacrificing to continually play - just like Josh has done. Since he won The Voice he’s headlined the Indy Jazz Fest, made his Broadway debut as the lead role in the Tony Award-winning play, Pippin. He sat in with one of my favorite bands, The Roots, on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and lots of other great things. Josh is playing two shows each night, 7:30 and 9:30. Tickets available through the website and by calling The Jazz Kitchen (317.253.4900).

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. While this photo was taken to show off a new car, it also reveals a bit of history in the background (...as so many old photos do. Please look through your old photo albums!). Knue’s corner building is shown to the left - with Shepherd’s Drugs, Covered Wagon Antiques, and College Package Liquor Store. Keever’s yellow brick building is on the right - with Bernice’s Restaurant, Doc Keever’s office above, and not shown, but to the right of this photo is Demaree Cleaners.

ACR Appliances - the story of a corner: part five

Don and Nancy lived at 5215 N. College Avenue (on left) and AC Radio was next door (right) at 5207.

By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com Background: In 2008 through 2019 I conducted a series of interviews with Don Albershardt. Don ran ACR Appliances at 5215 College Avenue from the 1960s into the 1990s His dad, Milton, started with a small radio shop on 52nd Street around 1927/28. I will try to tell the story of this store and also of the surrounding businesses at that corner in the coming installments. It is an interesting story.

In the last installment it is the 1930s. Milton Albershardt dies just three years after opening the store at 5207 N. College Avenue. Manager Ken Poisel buys AC Radio and marries Frances.

Don recalled a story his mother told him about the building across the street from AC Radio. In the 1930s, when Doc Keever was preparing to build the two-story yellow brick building at about 5212 N. College Avenue (currently the Aristocrat Pub), it was discovered that the corner building with Huff’s Drug Store and the WilJo-Hen Apartments above had been built one cement block width onto Keever’s property. Mr. Knue had built that building in the early 1920s (according to the listings in the city directories). “Mom said she watched the men fistfight over the boundary from our second floor apartment across the street,” recalls Don. The two men eventually worked it out and amended the deeds. That “concrete block width” rider was still on the books when Don sold that building to Rick Rising-Moore in the 1980s for the eventual Aristocrat Pub. Ken Poisel is now running AC Radio at 5207 N. College Avenue. Francis and Milton’s boy, Don Albershardt, goes to Nora Grade School, then IPS School 70, then to John Strange, then back at Nora. Don goes to high school at Tech, where his dad attended. In 1951, AC Radio participated in the Philco Old Refrigerator Derby. Customers registered their old refrigerators with the store and then the customer with the oldest one won a new Philco refrigerator. Based of the photos of AC Radio owner, Ken Poisel, and the winners, there was a tie for the oldest refrigerator in Indianapolis. One of the winners was Mrs. John Hook, Bud Hook’s mother, the other winner was Mrs. Serepta Brendel. (John Hook started Hook’s Drugs around 1900 and his son, Bud, took over in 1956.) Mrs. Hook won a brand new Philco Model 1018 refrigerator. It was funny, because she was considered to be one of the wealthiest women in the city, and yet she still had such an old refrigerator!

The new building, at 5215 N. College Avenue, for ACRadio in November 1968. Notice that the sign now slides the Radio part up against the AC part. Soon the store will become ACR Appliances.

Don went to Purdue and studied Electrical Engineering. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and served from 1953 through 1955. Don came home on a 10-day pass in 1954 and married Nancy. They lived at the house to the north of AC Radio at 5215 N. College Avenue (see photo above). Ken Poisel ran the store for years, with Don as Vice President & General Manager. Eventually for health reasons, Ken turned over the day-to-day operations of the store to Don. Ken and Frances had been spending many months out of the year in St. Petersburg for some time and built a home there. Don realized that AC Radio had outgrown the 5207 N. College Avenue Carter Building. He tore down his home to the north at 5215 and built a new 60’ x 100’ building. AC Radio moved into the new building in April 1968. – e n d o f AC R p a r t f i v e –

Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

Staying low often allows for perspective. It seems that people seek the advice of the humble when their lives are running out of control. Paradoxically, the earthy ones are often quite radiant. Below is a poem about one, who to me, exemplified earthy radiance:

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 6 in the left section on the middle row in the easy puzzle containing 4-5-8. The 6 in the right section of the midddle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 5. The 6 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the left of the 8. The spaces above and below the 5 are eliminated by the 6 in the left section of the bottom row. The only place left is to the left of the 4. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Super Summer Sipper Wine and Sunshine. Two of my favorite things. So imagine my glee when my friendly FedEx man Bob had me sign for a box with a sample of Sunseeker Rose inside. The name alone made me smile. So did the Rhone shaped bottle that looked as if a sunset had melted into the glass. The bottle neck is a brilliant red orange that slowly fades to a pale pink. An artsy logo in bright white chunky lettering looks as if it is hand painted. Together, the EYE appeal was enough to make me go look for a corkscrew. Sunseeker is one of the many new labels offered by E and J Gallo Wines of California. This dry style rose is a blend of syrah, grenache, pinot noir and sangiovese. The 4-grape blend offers up a fruity nose with crisp tart flavors of red apple, red raspberry and a hint of wild strawberry. The flavor is fresh and the finish is very dry. Chill a bottle while you fire up the grill and then enjoy it with veggies, fish or chops. Sunseeker Rose is widely available and affordably priced. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia wine specialist, AWS certified wine judge, freelance broadcast journalist and 20+ year home owner in the Warfleigh neighborhood of Broad Ripple. New Bike Line coming to serve you better Service department remains open in back

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter News Flash…News Flash…News Flash Robbery happened 2:30am. Speeding tickets written. Baby arrives. Explosion in population. Graffiti found on windows. Murder in the early morning. Ground too wet to plant.

Network News, the radio, Alexa, Internet news?....NO…This is a report from my backyard! Yes, robberies are happening nightly. The marauding raccoons are knocking down every birdfeeder and making off with the birdseed. We thought we could trick them by bringing in the feeders around midnight, but alas, the pesky critters just came earlier. And now, the moms are bringing their babies. These thieves are the bane of a backyard birdfeeding humans. They also delight in stealing any pet food left outside, and they will also help themselves to some vegetables in the garden. Keeping the critters at bay will often cause a human to become quite creative. Whether rabbit, chipmunk, raccoon, opossum thieves, a person may begin with baffles and sprays and usually must resort to live traps and relocation. This year has been extremely taxing because coyotes, foxes and deer are invading urban areas. The question now is who will win, the robbers or the residence? Speeding tickets…I wish I could issues them to the squirrels and the chipmunks. The piney and fox squirrel run rampant through the trees and yard much to the delight of the dogs and cat. It is this amusement that entertains me and frustrates my pets. Upon occasion though a murder will happen. There is no justice or sentence when my cat presents me with a chipmunk. I am only too happy to bury it, thus, I can be assured that my plants and tomatoes will remain mine and not their dinner. Now the graffiti is another issue. My house often suffers from nature’s marks whether from tree berries, animal droppings, or birds slinging the suet on my window. Our cars often have an erratic paisley design on their hoods and tops. The car wash enjoys the business during spring and fall when berries, seeds, and leaves are plentiful. Cleaning the roof and windows challenges us a bit more. It becomes a chore that we have to endure to put the house back in order to make it look like humans inhabit the premises, and we have not been overrun by nature. Now the weather is another thing. We did have a terribly wet, cool spring. I call it a Red Bud spring because the cool temperatures encouraged the flowering trees to stay for a longer period. And the wet spring brought forth a first in my yard. I was blessed to stumble upon morel mushrooms lining my driveway! This was a first for finding and tasting the delicacy. We had them fried and also in a wonderful cream asparagus pasta. My hope is they will reappear next year! We all know we can’t do much about the weather, and we have to adapt to the days. It will be interesting to see how the summer unfolds, hot and dry, hot and humid, hot and hot, or hot and cool. We just get to wait and see. Finally, it is fun imaging my backyard as a nursery. I have found empty blue eggs from baby robins. I know the rabbits hollow out a soft nest in our yard. As reported, the baby raccoons are plentiful along with the squirrels. The cardinal pairs are plentiful at the feeder, and I have found robin nests and Carolina wrens nesting in the planters. My favorite is the house wren. I talk to her while I work in the garden just below her house where she is raising her chicks. A backyard is not much different than life. There are weather events, crimes, births and deaths, growth, redevelopment, sports, and news. Take time to go outside whether it is your own backyard or a public space. I like to put life into perspective….If you are an adult, how many spring/summers will you probably experience going forward, or if you have children, how many spring/summers will you have them at home? Observe, enjoy. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com.
