Curious Mix host Jill Ditmire interviews Charlie Ballantine in a live Facebook broadcast in Irvington.

Curious Mix - Jill Ditmire on 90.1 FM By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com

INDEX

Local multi-media journalist Jill Ditmire recently discussed the concept for her new WFYI 90.1 FM arts and culture radio program Curious Mix where she is the producer/managing editor and host. “Naming the show was a collaborative effort. Six of us met to go over a list of names that we thought might work. We wanted the show to have a name that gave us the freedom to include a variety of interesting stories. We wrote down all of the suggestions, talked them over, mixed and matched a few and came up with CURIOUS MIX which appealed to all of us. I’ve been curious my entire life and a journalist most of it,” she laughed. “I go to events in a lot of neighborhoods and communities around Indianapolis

and Indiana. There are so many organizations and people doing creative, unique projects and programs that many people don’t know about. Things that are making a real difference in communities. We wanted to create a show that shared those stories. It’s a radio show so we also focus on SOUND. We record the stories on the scene, taking the listener there, giving them a reason to care about the story and hopefully learn something new. We make them as audio rich as possible, and tell the back story creating stories that could be interesting to anyone, not just a fan of the arts,” Ms. Ditmire emphasized. Many individuals make the show possible. “Several WFYI staff members contribute regular segments and I work with freelance journalists to create content. I report, write and edit a full story each week, in addition to scripting the show, and editing the audio needed for the billboard, open and forward promotions in the show as well as making sure the WFYI marketing and social media folks have the pictures, sound and information they need to promote the show. I also post our stories to NPR (National Public Radio) ONE and we are working to get more of them on the WFYI website. WFYI’s ATC Host Matt Pelsor takes all of the show elements, and the script and puts it together. Our theme music is very important, too. It weaves it all together. We were able to commission local musician and composer Brandon Meeks to create it for us. He and I spoke on the phone several times as I described the show and how I wanted people to experience it. Brandon created music that reflects the energy and vibe of the show. It’s terrific. I tell people even if they don’t like the stories, they are going to LOVE the music. I anchored the news on WFYI 90.1 from 2014 till March of this year when I started Curious Mix,” Ms. Ditmire said. Curious Mix can be heard on the radio (90.1 FM) or live on the web: (www.wfyi. org/programs/curious-mix/radio/rss) Thursday nights at 8 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. A weekly podcast of the show is also available on the www. wfyi.org website. Journalism was her calling early in life. “I did speech team, theater and some radio commercials in high school, then studied and actually worked in radio and television while at Butler University. I went into TV News after college and still do some on camera TV work as well. I’ve been writing through that entire time,” she noted. This includes being a long-time Broad Ripple Gazette contributor. “I enjoy

writing The Wine Scene column for (publisher) Alan (Hague). I try to make it interesting and make the wines I write about user-friendly. (She owned and operated the Mass Ave Wine Shoppe Cafe & Spirits from 2007 to 2014.) As an oenophile, she has toured wineries in diverse cultures. “Argentina was one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. The terrain is rugged and perfect for grape growing. I also love the south of France, and Spain and have visited Portugal several times,” she added. Ms. Ditmire was naturally drawn to writing. “I knew that I wanted to study theater or journalism after high school, but journalism seemed like it had more opportunities than becoming an actress. Our family watched the news as I grew up and I was very aware of current events from a young age. That is when I knew I wanted to get into TV news,” she said. Like other Butler University Radio-TV students, Ms. Ditmire worked on the campus radio station, WJRP, and auditioned and was chosen to work on the University’s professional FM station, WAJC, which was an NPR station. “We had a lot of people who actually worked in the Indianapolis TV and radio markets teach our classes. It was fantastic. They didn’t sugar coat it. You knew what to expect when you graduated. My major was Radio-Television and I had minors in journalism and political science. At that time, you really needed to know what was going on in the world to be a credible journalist and I really appreciated having to take those courses,” Ms. Ditmire recalled. “WAJC also was one of the first stations in town to play some classical music on laser disks (that are now DVD’s and CD’s). They were the size of long-playing records (LP’s) and sometimes got stuck in the machine while we were live on the air,” Ditmire remembered. These real-world college experiences blazed her career path in television that included anchoring and reporting news at TV stations in Lafayette, Indianapolis, Detroit and Lafayette including WTHR, WISH, WJBK, WLFI, WTTV, WRTV and the Ford Motor Company News Network. Ms. Ditmire also produced her own PBS television series on Indiana Public Television for 8 years called The Good Life, showcasing independent chefs/ restaurants and local wineries. In addition to writing about wine for the Broad Ripple Gazette, she judges wine competitions around the US and has written for a number of local and national newspapers and magazines. “The most rewarding thing about my work is I always learn something new. When someone tells me they learned something from one of our stories, that makes it all worthwhile. My late father always wanted me to be a teacher, and my mother is a retired teacher, so maybe I am able to do the same in a very small way. I hope people will find stories on Curious Mix interesting and informative, and want to learn more about the topic, and share it with others,” she surmised. Tune into WFYI 90.1 FM at 8 p.m. Thursdays, 7 a.m. Saturdays or listen at www.wfyi.org/programs/curious-mix/radio for Jill Ditmire’s Curious Mix of arts and culture in Indiana.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

We offer Health Coverage for:

Town with Nora Spitznogle Hello fireflies, I hope that July is treating you well so far. I’ve been seeing lots of music and taking advantage of the warm weather to ride my bike, walk, and even scooter around the neighborhood. Working in the yard, not so much - sorry neighbors! Enjoy whatever it is you love to do in the summer.

Jon McLaughlin Thursday, July 12 The Vogue 6259 N. College Ave 21+, $25 advance, $30 day of show, doors 7 pm, show 8 pm

Random Ripplings Saundra Mitchell, editor of All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages, was recently at Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, 5619 Illinois Street [MM19 on map], for a book signing.

I just love Jon McLaughlin. Not only is he a fabulous musician, but he clearly has a generous spirit. While he tours nationally and has supported tours with industry giants (Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson, Adele) and co-written and sung with other very big acts (Demi Lovato, Sara Bareilles) he shares his talent with his home state. Jon’s music is full of hooks and heartfelt lyrics and passionate piano playing–the sort of things that get stuck in your head (in a great way). Cyrus Youngman and the Kingfishers and Wax Nostalgic are the opening acts. Jon is donating 100% of the ticket proceeds to the anti-human trafficking group, Purchased. The Indiana-based nonprofit is now in their tenth year of fighting sex trafficking, educating the public, and providing a mentorship program for Indiana victims.

Cowboy Show 2018 Monday, July 16 Broad Ripple Park, Dance Studio 1550 Broad Ripple Ave - all-ages (suggested 3 - 8 years old), $3 (with discounts for two or more participants), 1-2 pm Cowpoke Paul sings the songs and tells the stories of the history of the Western United States. With a set out of Dodge City, Paul brings the American Cowboy to Broad Ripple. The link to purchase tickets is really long. I suggest doing an internet search for “cowboy show 2018 broad ripple park” and that will get you there quicker than trying to type in the link.

HBR Summer Movie Series - While You Were Sleeping (1995) Thursday, July 19 Hotel Broad Ripple 6520 Westfield Blvd - all ages - film is rated PG-13, free, 9 - 11 pm

I didn’t see a lot of movies as a kid - in fact I can name all three: Wizard of Oz, Oliver, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I was so enamored with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that I named my new kitten that. After my parents heard me calling for Chitty Chitty, they suggested that I change her name. And that’s how Checkers got her new moniker. I was very careful to keep the CH sound in case she didn’t recognize her new name. In retrospect I’m guessing that my parents were trying to get me to change exactly that sound. Anyway, all of the older movies are new to me and some of the newer ones are too. The tables and chairs at the hotel fill up quickly so I suggest bringing your own lawn chairs and picnic blanket. They serve beer, wine, and delicious and shareable cheese, meats, vegetable and other delights. Please don’t bring your own booze - it’s against the liquor laws and not at all polite.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. Electric scooters arrive in the Ripple The shared electric scooters have arrived in the Ripple. Lime scooters are everywhere including on the sidewalks and on the Monon Trail. I have only seen the Lime electric scooters. I spoke recently with Jason Wilde of Lime (and his communications consultant, Laura Beck). The scooters have been in the City for just two weeks. To find a Lime scooter in the Ripple, open their app and look especially for the Lime hubs. From their press release: “The Lime-S scooters cost $1 to unlock and 15 cents per minute of riding. Lime-S scooters already have rolled out earlier this year in San Diego, San Francisco, D.C., Denver, Honolulu, Austin, Miami, San Jose, Oakland, Charlotte, and most recently, Santa Monica and South Lake Tahoe. Forty percent of Lime rides across the country start or stop at public transit stations, showcasing how people are using Lime as their first and last-mile transportation option. “Indianapolis will be the first market in the Midwest with Lime scooters because of the City’s culture of innovation and connectivity,” said Jason Wilde, Lime Regional General Manager. Currently available in more than 70 markets, Lime is the leading U.S. micro-mobility company in the nation. Since first launching in June 2017, riders have logged more than 4 million trips on its electric scooters, electricassist bikes, and classic manual pedal bikes. photo by Bill Malcolm All of Lime’s bikes and scooters are GPS and 3G-enabled, making it simple for riders to find, unlock and pick up a nearby vehicle using their smartphone. When the ride is finished, riders simply end the ride with the Lime mobile app and responsibly park by the street curb, or at a bike rack. Lime plans to share extensive data in route and usage patterns with the City and is committed to hiring locally. Lime also is the only company that produces rider education videos geared towards informing riders about safety and how/where to park responsibly. For more info on Lime electric scooters, view the Lime-S video here (a How-To video) and the Lime-S page here. Coming soon will be Lime Bikes, if all goes well. They are in talks with the City on the details, according to Wilde. Lime Bikes are like the Pacers Bike Share except there are no docking stations. Like the scooters, you leave them wherever. However it is not legal to navigate motorized vehicles on sidewalks or the Monon trail. As of press time, the other scooter company (Bird) had not responded.

Last Call For Outdoor Pool - Closing August 5 Don’t forget to show your support for the beleaguered Broad Ripple Park pool by swimming there before they close on August 5. Several swimmers told me this might be the last summer.

Also join my Facebook page, Friends of Broad Ripple Park Pool. Most importantly, let IndyParks know you oppose closing the outdoor pool (currently part of the Broad Ripple Park Master Plan debate). Get out of the Ripple: Fabulous Philly Philadelphia makes for a perfect long weekend. Steeped in American history, the city is very walkable. I took American to PHL, the former US Airways hub. American has the most non-stops. Once at the airport, hop on the SEPTA regional rail to the Jefferson Station. It is just $8 and takes 20 minutes (and is free if you are coming from the Amtrak Station). The Alexander Inn at 12th and Spruce is your affordable choice. It features free wifi with no password, breakfast served on weekends until noon, and is steps to everything you will want to go to. Book your room at www.alexanderinn.com. First time visitors and American history buffs will want to make a bee line to the Independence National Historical Park, home of the Liberty Bell. You can also tour Independence Hall. Nearby is the National Museum of American Jewish History (101 S. Independence Mall East) which has a new exhibit, “Leonard Bernstein-The Power of Music”. It’s a very informative tale of the famous New York composer. It is an absolute must and worth the $15 admission fee. You will find them at the corner of 5th and Market. Also be sure and visit the iconic City Hall which features Ben Franklin himself on the roof. When nighttime falls, head over to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts or Walnut Street Theater to catch a show. Mama Mia was at Walnut Street when I visited. The Reading Market Terminal just 8 blocks north of the hotel has every kind of food you could want. It’s like Chicago’s French Market on steroids. Try the Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwich. I went for healthy and had a fresh carrot juice. Get your morning coffee and patisserie at J’Aime French Bakery, 212 S. 12th. The cafe americano is to die for. Mercato at 12th and Spruce features dining on the sidewalk. The Parc Bistro at Locust and 18th has great French food. In short, you can’t beat a long weekend in historic yet modern Philadelphia. Clue: C equals K Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, two-step, way to solve. On the hard puzzle, we see that the 9 in the left section of the middle row would eliminate the spaces above and below the 8 in the upper left section. The 9 in the top middle section would eliminate the spaces to the left of the 6. This leaves three possible locations for the eventual 9, below the 5 or 6 (in green). We can determine where an eventual 9 would go in the lower left section to help. The 9 in the left middle section eliminates the space above the 6 in the lower left section. The 9 in the lower right section eliminates the 3 spaces in the middle of the lower left section, leaving only two possible locations for a 9 - to the right of the 6 or two spaces to the right of the 8 (in red). Regardless of which place it will end up, it will eliminate the spaces under the 6 in the upper left section, leaving only the space below the 5 for the 9!

I loved sparklers as a kid. The fireworks kind. I loved watching a metal rod transform into a glittering wand of light. I loved the sizzling sound it made as I twirled it around and “wrote” in the sky. I even liked the sulfur smell after it burned out. I love sparklers as an adult. The bubbly wine kind. All champagne IS sparkling wine but not all sparkling wine is champagne. The French say ONLY sparkling wines made in the Champagne region can be labeled as such. Sparkling wine tastes great with food, even simple eats like mac and cheese or popcorn and chips. Price shouldn’t hold you back either. It’s made around the world and called prosecco, frizzante, cava, and spumante. It comes in a rose style too. Barefoot Bubbly Brut Rose is fruity and dry with notes of wild strawberry. It’s easy to find and a bargain to buy. Casal Garcia comes from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. It’s harder to find but delivers notes of currant and cherry with a crisp, dry fizzy finish. The J Sparkling Rose is worth the splurge for its full bodied, creamy notes of cranberry, blackberry and plenty of tiny bubbles.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter From the Garden to Your Table This is the most bountiful time of the year! If you haven’t attended the Farmer’s Market lately…you are missing the bounty of Indiana. Each market in the area has its own unique personality and vendors. You can almost find a market every noon or evening of the week to run by and pick up fresh produce or baked goods. I don’t have a complete list because markets often spring up at local churches and now even hospitals, but check out these markets: Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market BRHS parking lot

1st & 3rd Thursdays Now - Sept.: 4:00-6:30pm

Irvington Farmer’s Market

Second Sunday of each month Now-Oct.: Noon - 3pm

There are more markets in surrounding areas like Greenwood, Fishers, Zionsville, Noblesville, and Saxony. Each market has special vendors and seasonal offerings in addition to weekly entertainment. Let me just tell you what you are missing if you can’t take advantage of these markets. You can find all kinds of fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown locally. The meats vary from organic lamb, chickens, beef, pork, and bison. You can find cheeses, breads, pies, jams, honey, and baked goods. Flowers and plants are bountiful. Sunflowers are particularly eye catching! You find specialties like local crafts, scents, oils, dips, dog gourmets, coffees & teas, and pastas. Breakfast sandwiches, tamales, crepes, pizza, ice creams, and all good eats are available too. My favorites are the flavored oils and vinegars, the fresh herbs, the mixed bouquets of field grown local flowers, and the wonderful sweet corn and tart apples. It is the weekly trips to the market that I miss on a cold January day when the world is asleep under snow. To taste the fresh Indiana berries and produce just can’t be beat. Our markets are a little bit of heaven each week. You might even find crafts, cooking classes, a strumming minstrel. The people watching is the great, and the dog watching is the best. Bring a tote and load up. See your neighbors and talk to the vendors. This is truly farm to your table. The markets are even a great place to take children. Give them a few dollars and ask them to shop. It is amazing what catches their fancy. If they buy it, they will more likely eat it! The markets are also a great place to bring guest from out of town. These small markets are like a preview to Indiana State Fair…also a wonderful place to enjoy the agriculture and the produce of our state. What a delightful way to share the bounty and pleasures of Indiana. I hope to see you at one of the markets in the coming weeks. Eagle Scout project benefits BR American Legion Post The American Legion Post in Broad Ripple has a new dedicated box that the community can leave unserviceable flags thanks to Boy Scout Sean Faulk with Troop 56. The American Legion Post has always accepted worn out flags to be properly retired but nowhere to leave the flags when no one is at the post. In the past the flags have been left at either Johnny’s Market or on the doorstep of the post. Sean has attended meetings at the post for Order of the Arrow meetings and noticed that something was missing. As part of Sean’s Eagle Scout Project he proposed to the membership of the American Legion Post to install a box as a place for worn out flags to be left. Sean’s project also included cleaning the exterior of the garage when the box was installed. To raise money for the project Sean held a pancake breakfast at Fire Station #32 in Broad Ripple on Saturday April 28th (see Broad Ripple Gazette Volume 15 Number 10). The fundraiser breakfast went so well that Sean was able to complete his project for the legion and make the surrounding building look a lot better for the eyes of the community. The box is wrapped in a vinyl wrap instead of paint. The design for the flag retirement box was worked out between Sean and Chuck Schafer. Chuck Schafer and the team at Schafer design donated their time and their materials to make this flag retirement box a huge success. Sean was also able to be involved with the design and installation of the wrap.
