INDEX
“The Northside Montessori School held a retirement party on Sunday, May 20 for our former owners, Judy Edwards and Pat Young. They opened our doors at 1224 E. 52nd Street in September of 1986. They remained the owners for 30 years! They have recently retired and we had an appreciation Open House for all the families that have been touched by being a part of Northside Montessori. There were past students and families that came to show their gratitude for all that Ms. Edwards and Ms. Pat have done. There was even a student from their very first year as a school, 1986! said Tara Franke, who is their Head of School. According to their website, (northsidemontessorischool.com/about-us), Ms. Edwards and Ms. Young founded the school to provide an exciting learning environment for children 3-12 years old. The staff works continually to maintain the quality of the program and facility. In this effort, they have the support of very dedicated teachers and parents. Their devoted staff has over 85 years of combined experience. They have a passion for the Montessori philosophy and strive to nurture and support all the children, thus allowing them to have a natural love of learning and a never ending curiosity. NMS offers a traditional ten-month school curriculum and a summer day camp. The school curriculum consists of practical life, sensorial, math, language, cultural, science, art, music and a foreign language at all levels. Summer camp consists of themes chosen by the staff, some academics, reading activities, and a great deal of fun! Summer camp is for past students, present students and students enrolled for the next school year. The Jazz Kitchen recently hosted the latest Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam. It was a sold out event. Local author Dan Wakefield (Going All The Way) led the discussion about the life of Cole Porter ( from Peru, Indiana) with author and Cole Porter researcher Cathy Day (also from Peru), and musician Sophie Fraught. Day is the author of The Circus in Winter and is working on a new book. The musical portion was all Cole Porter hits performed by saxophonist Sophie Faught, singer Julie Houston, and guitarist Joel Tucker. Dan talked about his days at School 80 (across from the Broad Ripple Kroger) and shared a story of seeing Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger at the Vogue Theater back in the 40s. Georgia Gianakos Buchanan awards Press Club honor
Woman’s Press Club of Indiana, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women, is proud to name Georgia Gianakos Buchanan its 2018 Communicator of Achievement. The award is given for excellence in communications and service to the community. It was presented June 2 at the WPCI Awards luncheon at Hollyhock Hill Restaurant in Indianapolis. It is the highest award given by NFPW. As the Indiana affiliate nominee, Buchanan will compete for the national award with nominees from other affiliates at the national convention Sept. 6-8 in Bethlehem, PA. Buchanan, a native of Indianapolis, was born to Greek immigrant parents in 1926. She graduated from Butler University with a major in journalism and soon became the television, radio, and movie editor of the Indianapolis News. This was followed by a stint with Mutual Broadcasting in Washington, DC, before returning to her home city in the mid-1960s as the sometimes-single mother of a specialneeds son. Her efforts to ensure that her son had the best opportunities available at a time when there were not many led to a second career in fundraising and event planning for non-profit organizations in the 1980s and ‘90s. She has served on 15 boards, chaired or co-chaired more than 30 fundraisers, and raised more than $1 million as an advocate for the arts, mental health, and challenged children. She has been president of Indiana Special Olympics and the Mental Health Board. She also is the author of three books: Paved with Gold, a novel; 428-1/2: My Journey Beyond the Railroad Tracks, a memoir, and How to Live Beyond 90 without Falling Down, a humorous advice book in which she shares her life’s lessons for readers of all ages. Soon to be 92, she resides in Indianapolis with her son, Bryan Hadin.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

When I saw that Jif and the Choosy Mothers were playing I was inspired to dig through my tubs of band tee shirts and find my Jif shirt. I wore the heck out of that thing in the late 80s. I have many happy memories of seeing them at the Vogue, Patio, and Midsummer Fest. I’m looking forward to seeing them again. I’ll be the one wearing the slightly stained Jif and the Choosy Mothers top.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Charlotte Beatty was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. She lived a few blocks from the Jackson Five and attended Gary Roosevelt with Jermaine Jackson. Charlotte recently painted her first 3 canvasses. I would describe them as pure spiritual art. This poem is for her.

Art Center schedules summer exhibition and BBQ Join the Indianapolis Art Center on June 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate the Summer Exhibition Series with a community BBQ party, music, outdoor games, activities and more. Proceeds from this fundraising event provide critical support to the Indianapolis Art Center’s classes, exhibitions, outreach and other community programs. “Art From the Heartland” features work from some of the Midwest’s most innovative and prolific artists. The exhibition serves as the Art Center’s survey on the state of contemporary art in the Midwest, highlighting artists from Indiana and surrounding states. This year’s exhibition was juried by Indy Moca’s Gallery Director Mike Barclay, who selected 80 pieces out of a pool of over 650. Also opening that night, artwork from the Indianapolis Art Center’s SMART Program. The SMART program (Supportive Mentoring through ART) is a unique partnership between the Indianapolis Art Center, Starfish Initiative and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana. It is a year-long structured art program for youth between the ages of 12-18 from under-served areas of Indianapolis with an interest and/or talent in the visual arts. Youth and mentors together attend a series of specialized art classes in a variety of mediums at the Art Center.

Cracking Art-Newfields new exhibit opens Newfields (aka Indianapolis Museum of Art) invites everyone to explore their new campus-wide summer experience, Summer Wonderland: Spectacular Creatures, with an exclusive walking tour led by curator of the exhibition, Dr. Preston Bautista. The sculptures are the creations of Cracking Art—a collective of artists based in Italy—who create these works from recyclable plastic to speak to the increasing artificiality of society and to raise awareness of environmental issues such as, global warming, the overuse of fossil

fuels and the importance of recycling. Explore nearly 500 of Cracking Art’s colorful creatures as they have settled into Newfields for the summer. See snails climbing the walls in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion, elephants roaming inside Lilly House, giant alligators sunning on garden pathways, bears picking apples in the Gene and Rosemary Tanner Orchard, sparrows soaring in the Beer Garden and penguins cooling off inside the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Get out of the Ripple-Chicago by train Take the Amtrak train to Chicago from Indy. Leave at 6 a.m. everyday. Return from Chicago at 5:45 p.m. Tickets from $25 or so. Much less stressful than driving on I-65 (which is full of construction and congested with a lot of truck traffic). Plus no downtown Chicago parking costs. Both the Hoosier State and Cardinal trains (which operate on the route) have a café car. The seats are better than first class on the airlines. Free WiFi allows you to work or surf the web. Chicago’s Union Station includes two first class lounges—The Metropolitan Club and The Legacy Club. You will find Indy’s Union Station Terminal at 350 S. Illinois. Once in Chicago, enjoy the summer festivals in Chicago and the great beaches. The proximity to Lake Michigan keeps it cooler than Indy. I like the Hotel Versey (644 W. Diversey Parkway near the Diversey Station on the Brown Line on the CTA). It’s in the Lakeview East neighborhood close to Wrigley Field and other attractions. Tickets for the train at www.Amtrak.com. Pool closes August 5 Don’t forget to get over the Broad Ripple Park Pool which is open every day except Monday for your swimming and tanning pleasure. As I have noted, the future of the pool is at risk and is nowhere in the IndyPark Broad Ripple Park draft master plan. Join our new Facebook page, Friends of Broad Ripple Pool on Facebook. Let IndyParks know you support continuation of an outdoor pool at Broad Ripple Park. Enjoy the pool. It closes August 5. photo by Bill Malcolm

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the top row that contains 2-4-6-8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 4. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces below the 8. The 5 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space between the 2-8. The only place left is tot he left of the 6. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Malbec and Chardonnay. Great wine grapes any time of the year, even in the hot, humid days of Indiana summer. The El Esteco Malbec comes from one of the most beautiful and eco-minded vineyards in Argentina. High altitude and desert-like soil makes the grapes struggle to find water which in turn creates deep, lush, dark fruit. This rich red offers up tons of concentrated black fruit flavors, chewy tannins and a full dry finish. JJ Vincent Bourgogne Blanc is 100% Chardonnay from the southern part of Burgundy, France. The grapes are first fermented in stainless steel to prompt the fresh apple, pear flavors, then finished in oak, adding a soft creamy touch of vanilla oak. Terrific value too. Both wines are summer food friendly. But how do they taste with bugs? Curious palates can find out on June 28th when The DaVinci Pursuit hosts a laid back conversation between local artists and scientists who are insect experts. “Bugs, Booze and Bites” serves up some “cricket protein” eats along with non-buggy bites. Wash it down with wine, Upland Dragonfly IPA or New Day Craft mead and cider. www.thedavincipursuit.com

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining
by Elizabeth Morse
Summery Salmon! Seems like almost everyone loves salmon. A healthy fish and easy to find and prepare. I’m sharing two recipes today. Whether you are entertaining for lunch or dinner, you’ll find these options are crowd-pleasing hits.
Salmon Salad 5 oz. fresh spinach (4) 6 oz. salmon filets 2 cups fresh strawberries, cored and sliced 1/2 cup toasted almond slices Dressing: 1/4 cup lemon juice 1 cup orange juice juice of one lime 1 egg 1 egg white 3/4 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons honey 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil Preheat oven to 375. Line a baking dish with aluminum foil, then coat with a bit of oil or non-stick spray. Add the fish in a single layer (if the fish has skin, place skin side down) and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. The fish should flake easily with a fork. While the salmon bakes, combine all of the ingredients for the dressing in a blender or food processor and process until well-blended. Refrigerate until serving. To serve add spinach, sliced berries, toasted almonds and 1/2 of the dressing into a large bowl and toss. Divide the salad among four dinner plates and top with a slice of salmon. Drizzle another tablespoon of dressing over the fish on each plate and enjoy.

A sign is up announcing that The Donut Experiment is coming to Glendale Town Center, in the old Snapdragon location [JJ32 on map].
Salmon with Fruit Salsa 4 (6 oz) salmon filets Marinade: 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium) 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 1/4 teaspoons brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons molasses 1 clove minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Fruit Salsa: 1/2 cup diced pineapple 1/2 cup diced apple 1 kiwi, peeled and diced 1 mango, peeled and diced (frozen is ok if thawed and drained first, about 1 cup) 1/4 cup green bell pepper, diced 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped 4 teaspoons brown sugar Combine all ingredients for marinade in a gallon-size plastic bag. Add salmon, seal the bag and marinate, refrigerated for 1-3 hours. While the fish is marinating, combine ingredients for the fruit salsa in a non-metal bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Preheat oven to 375. Line a baking dish with aluminum foil, then coat with a bit of oil or non-stick spray. Add the fish in a single layer (if the fish has skin, place skin side down). Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. The fish should flake easily with a fork. Transfer a piece of fish each to four dinner plates. Top generously with fruit salsa and serve. Pro Tip: Serve this with a side salad or over a bed of rice to complete your meal. Wine Tip: Consider a Chardonnay with the Salmon Salad and a German Riesling with the Salmon and Fruit Salsa!
