Broad Ripple River Walk - closer to reality By Mario Morone

INDEX

Bruce Buchanan, co-chair of the Broad Ripple RiverWalk Task Force, described preliminary stages of a river-walk promenade being planned for Broad Ripple Avenue along White River. “The goal is to build a safe connection between Broad Ripple Park and the Village for pedestrians and bicyclists. This is a project that started to evolve sometime in the 1980s, with starts and stops, but our group has good momentum. Brad Warnecke and I are co-chairing a steering committee of twenty volunteers, all with great interest in bringing this feature to Broad Ripple,” he explained. “We are calling it a promenade, something with an aesthetic similar to the Cultural Trail downtown. It will run along the north side of Broad Ripple Avenue using the existing elevation. Currently there are bike lanes on both sides of the road. Shifting the bike lanes to the north side improves safety and offers promenade travelers a wonderful view of the White River oxbow, which is one of our county’s great natural wonders. Numerous community groups, non-profit and governmental agencies are engaged with us,” Buchanan added. In 2014, Weaver’s Lawn and Garden Shop property on Broad Ripple Avenue and White River went on the market. A cadre of professionals studied a way to integrate that area into the Indianapolis Park system. When that effort stalled, they began an effort to preserve and develop that stretch of land for public use and enjoyment. They are: financial planner Bradley Warnecke, Flanner and Buchanan owner Bruce Buchanan, Eclipse Real Estate President Bryan Chandler and Apple Press President & CEO Thomas Healy. Their collective vision is now being made a reality.

“The plan can be implemented in phases with the first phase focused on constructing the promenade and enhancing Broad Ripple Avenue as a boulevard from Compton to Broad Ripple Park. We are talking with all stakeholders in the Village, so we coordinate with other projects such as the Red Line and the master planning in store for Broad Ripple Park. Our Task Force believes this will get done as we have already received donations for initial expenses to develop the plan,” Buchanan concluded. Future information on the project will be announced as it becomes available.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Emmet Cohen Trio Sunday, May 20 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave - 21+, doors open 5:00, show 6:30, $20

Jazz pianist and composer, Emmet Cohen, will bring his “nimble touch, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary,” as described by DownBeat magazine. He is often praised as one of his generation’s pivotal artistic figures. Not only is he a wonderful musician, but he presents jazz performance lectures through the YoungArts Foundation and Lincoln Center’s “Jazz for Young People” program. He is Hammond B-3 organist-in-residence at Harlem’s Smoke jazz club. A Suzuki piano student at age three, Cohen holds jazz piano degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (M.M.) and the University of Miami (B.M.). He was previously a finalist in the American Pianists Awards in both 2011 and 2015, and he was also a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in 2011. Impressive stuff for a man in his 20s! As always, you can enjoy a delicious meal and libations as you listen to the fabulous music.

A draft of the new paster plan for Broad Ripple Park shooing the new through road.

BR Park planning meeting #3 held at BRHS The third public meeting for public input for the Broad Ripple Park master plan was held at Broad Ripple High School on May 3rd, there were approximately 90 in attendance. The planning process was explained. There will be four public meetings. The first two for public input, the third to show the proposed plan and gather more feedback, and the fourth to show the final proposal. The meeting was pretty quiet until the end when attendees spoke back about subjects like cutting mature trees and protecting wildlife. It is now clear that an outdoor pool is not part of the proposal for this phase of the park. It was also announced that the recycling area would be removed and the boat ramp may move to Ravenswood (there was an assurance that this would not interfere with the annual fireworks). A major change to the park would be the addition of a through road with distributed parking. This road could be gated off about a third of the way in from both ends to allow for a farmers market on the middle section of the road. Several areas are planned to increase the public interaction with the White River. The final public meeting will be held at 6pm on May 23rd at BRHS in the cafeteria.

Clue: O equals Z

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the left section of the bottom row that contains 2-4-5-6-7. The 1 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the space to the right of the 7. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 4. The only place left is between the 2-5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The “500 days” of May are here. If you can’t make it to the Brickyard you can still celebrate the spirit of community and tradition by holding a “porch party” in your neighborhood. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has joined the movement that started in 2016 as part of Indiana’s Bicentennial Celebration. That year, Hoosiers were encouraged to celebrate friendship as it was in 1816 which meant visiting your next door neighbors. In this age of Facebook and Instagram and TWITTER too many people either forget or don’t know what it’s like to just sit and talk with a person IN PERSON. IMS and local arts organizations want to help residents make an old tradition a modern movement where neighbors know their neighbors and feel more respectful and responsible to create a caring, inclusive community. And YES, this 21st Century version DOES include social media. The Harrison Center FACEBOOK page and ims.com/500forward both have plenty of details on the art of porching and ways to share photos and win prizes. You can also follow Porch Party Indy on social media through the hashtags #PorchPartyIndy #500Forward #ThisIsMay @HarrisonCtrArts. My Warfleigh neighbors and I have been porching (and decking, gardening, couching and kitchening) on a regular basis since I first moved into the neighborhood twenty years ago. And most of those occasions include wine. The latest “porch pour” discovered is a lush rustic Spanish red. The 2013 Luis Canas Crianza is made mostly from tempranillo grapes aged for one year in oak barrels. A lovely nose of plum, blueberry, blackberry and almond gives way to similar smooth, easy drinking flavors. It’s affordable and available at Broad Ripple area wine stores which offers yet another opportunity to meet your neighbors.
